TO THE MEDIA The 2010 Mercer University Volleyball Media Guide is intended to provide you with general information about the Mercer volleyball team. This information should assist you in your coverage of the team throughout the season. Should you need additional information or assistance, please contact Sports Information softball contact Andy Sta-bell at (478) 301-5219 with any requests. CREDENTIAL REQUESTSThe Sports Information Office will issue credentials to working press only. All credential requests should be made in writing at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled game.

PRACTICESAs a general rule, all practices are open to the media and the public. There may be instances, however, when all or part of a practice session is closed. Please contact the Sports Infor-mation Office in advance if you plan on attending a practice session so an escort can be made avaliable.

INTERVIEW POLICyMedia interviews of players and coaches are encouraged, and every effort will be made to accommodate media requests. In-person interviews are preferred, but telephone interviews can be arranged through the Mercer Sports Information Of-fice. Under no circumstances will student-athletes’ residence numbers be supplied to the media.

INTERVIEWSAll interviews with Mercer student-athletes should be coor-dinated through the Sports Information Office. Players are generally avaliable for interviews up to 30 minutes prior to the start of practice and directly afterward. Head coach Noelle Rooke is generally available in the morning.

POST-GAME INTERVIEWSFollowing a 10-minute “cooling-off” period, coaches and players from both teams will be made available to media members outside each team’s respective dugout. The Sports Information Office will poll the media prior to the end of the game to determine any player requests.

MERCER SPORTS NETWORKMercer University Athletics has announced that it has renewed its contract with Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. to serve as the flag-ship radio network for the University’s men’s basketball games in 2010-11. The broadcaster’s sister FM stations of Peach 96.5 & 102.5 (WPCH and WZCH ) will serve as the flagship stations for all broad-casts this season.

MU will also broadcast selected Bears’ women’s basketball, baseball and softball games. Plans for the expanded coverage to include those sports are currently being formulated, but have not yet been finalized.

Mercer’s Atlantic Sun Conference games will be among the broad-casts, including the 2011 A-Sun Basketball Championships, to be played once again this year on the Mercer campus at the University Center.

Rick Cameron, “Voice of the Bears” for the past four seasons, will continue to call the play-by-play. Mercer’s senior assistant vice president for marketing communications returned to the broadcast booth in 2006 after originally doing radio play-by- play in the late 1970s.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW Mercer head volleyball coach Noelle Rooke begins her eighth season with the team Friday, as the Bears get the 2011 campaign underway at the Winthrop Classic presented by Hampton Inn. Mercer is set to challenge Davidson on Friday night (5 p.m.) before meeting host Winthrop and UNC Wilmington on Saturday.

In her previous seven years with the school, Rooke has reached many milestones, including her 200th coaching win, a record-setting 18-win season in 2008 and becoming the school’s winningest coach.

This season, Rooke embarks on the fall campaign with three seniors determined to leave their mark on the program. Charlotte Harris, Amiee Frutchey and Anna Coursey have contributed to 43 wins in Or-ange and Black, but have their sights trained on a program-first Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship.

In the annual preseason A-Sun coaches’ poll, Mercer was picked to finish seventh and Harris was one of eight players named to the preseason All-Conference team. For Rooke, surpassing expectations has become the norm and the 2011 season provides another opportunity to seek an A-Sun title.

Mercer’s 2011 squad features plenty of new faces as six newcomers join the ten returners from a year ago. Here is an in-depth breakdown of the 2011 volleyball team.

LIBERO – At the libero position, Rooke can breathe easy, as she returns one of the most decorated players in program history. Charlotte Harris, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C. begins her second season as Mercer’s primary libero. Last year, Harris earned Atlantic Sun Libero of the Year and first-team All-

Conference honors.

Harris’ selection marked the first time a Mercer player has been tabbed as an All-Conference first team member. Harris held the conference lead in digs per set from wire-to-wire, finishing the regular season with a total of 638 digs. Her league-leading dig total also marked a program-best single-season tally.

OUTSIDE HITTER – Amiee Frutchey, another seasoned veteran, high-lights the group of talented outside hitters on the 2011 roster. In

each of her first three years at Mercer, Frutchey has started at least 28 matches and posted better than 150 kills and 300 digs. Last season, the Gresham, Ore.

native tallied a career-best and team-high 274 kills while leading the team in attacks for the second-straight season.

After a breakout 2010 season, junior Jamie Duffy is poised to become one of the league’s most dangerous offensive threats. Last year, Duffy surpassed the 200 kill mark for the first time in Orange and Black and led or tied for the team lead in kills on eight occasions. If last year’s Oct. 30th match at Campbell (20 kills, 15 digs) is a sign of things to come, opponents must gameplan for a way to contain No. 6.

Adding to the depth at the outside hitter position is newcomer Codi Schepp, a 6-2 junior out of Paris Junior College. Schepp, adds size and athleticism and is expected to

competed to compete for time at the position.

RIGHTSIDE HITTER – One of Rooke’s most consistent assets in 2011 is Anna Coursey, a senior who has seen an increased role in each season with Mercer. After a 2008

freshman campaign that saw her play in 28 matches, Coursey has upped her kill total in each subsequent season, capping her junior year with 148 kills. Through Rooke’s tutelage, Coursey has developed into one of the league’s premier defen-

Backing up Coursey are a trio of sophomores anxious to gain additional playing time in 2011. Cassie Roy, Emily Rochefort and Lizzie Knapper each showed flashes of talent a year ago and are viable options for Rooke at the position.

MIDDLE BLOCKER – Facing the departure of graduated players Krista Hurley and Libby Hansch, Rooke has the task of changing personnel at the middle blocker position. Returning in 2011 are junior Char-layna Braxton and sophomore Zoe Becton. Rooke believes both Braxton and Becton have the physical traits and athletic ability to fill the void left by last year’s senior class.

Joining Braxton and Becton at the middle blocker spot are Jennifer Katona and Caroline Carlton, each newcomers to the program. Katona is a junior transfer from Pittsburgh. In two years at Pittsburgh, Kato-na appeared in 85 sets and racked up 108 kills. Carlton is coming off a four-year career at Independence High School where she set the school record for kills and racked up a bevy of individual accolades. Among Carlton’s most prominent awards are being named a Tennessee Sport Writer’s All State player twice. Carlton also collected TSSAA All State honors in 2008.

SETTER – Taking the reins at the setter position in 2011 is junior transfer Monica Sanchez. Sanchez brings her talents to Mercer after a two-year stop at Kishwaukee College, where she was the starting setter for the Kougars. In 2010, Sanchez was tabbed an NJCAA DII All-American after averaging 10.4 as-sists per set and racking up 129 aces. Sanchez’s assists per set average was fifth best in the nation while her aces per set figure ranked sixth in the country.

Madeline Dolny is a late addition to the roster who Rooke believes has potential to be a game-changer at the setter position. Dolny is a 5-8 transfer from Northern Idaho who will likely split time with Sanchez as the floor leader.

SCHEDULE - Three tournaments, eight additional non-conference matches and 13 Atlantic Sun Confer-ence contests comprise the 2011 Mercer volleyball schedule, announced by head coach Noelle Rooke on Wednesday. “The aim of our scheduling process for this season was to create a suitable non-conference schedule that would compare with our league schedule,” Rooke said. “We achieved our goal of adding RPI boost-ing challenges while also giving us an opportunity to gain momentum heading into A-Sun play.”

For the second time in as many years, the Mercer volleyball team prepares for a fall season in which its Atlantic Sun conference schedule has been changed. Last season, the conference shifted from a home-away format to a single-round of contests, giving the team 10 league matches. This season, the A-Sun experiments with a divisional system, splitting the league’s 10 teams into north and south divisions. The divide between the northern and southern factions lands in the geographic center of the conference, grouping Mercer with the southern schools while Kennesaw State joins the northern contingency. Mercer’s alignment with the southern half of the league means the Bears square off with the four Florida-based teams (Jacksonville, North Florida, Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast) twice this season. Mercer meets each of the northern division teams (Belmont, Lipscomb, ETSU, USC Upstate, Kennesaw State) just once in 2011.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW Seeding and progression of the conference tournament is to re-main unchanged, as the six-team field grants the top two teams a first-round bye. The 2011 A-Sun Championship is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 and is hosted by Lip-scomb University. Aside from 13 conference con-tests, the Bears also compete at three non-conference tour-naments, including the eighth annual Mercer Bear Brawl. The

2011 version of Mercer’s tournament brings Troy, Tennessee State and Norfolk State to the University Center for the two-day event (Sept. 2-3). Following the Bear Brawl, Mercer travels to the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Invitational and squares off against the host Yellowjackets, as well as Georgia and Samford.

The season starts with the Winthrop Classic, hosted by the Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. Mercer’s first action comes against Davidson before taking on the host Eagles and UNC Wilmington. Other non-conference clashes include home and away sets with Florida A&M, Chat-tanooga, Savannah State, and Troy. A match against Georgia State is scheduled for Sept. 13 at the University Center.

Head CoachEighth SeasonFlorida Southern, 1996

Head Coach Noelle Rooke enters her eighth season at the helm of the Mercer volleyball program. The native of Agoura, Calif., is the winningest volleyball coach in the school’s history and recently celebrated her 200th head coaching win in a 3-1 triumph at Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 7, 2009.

Since becoming just the fourth Atlantic Sun coach to reach the 200-win plateau, Rooke has tacked on 15 more victories to her career total.

Rooke’s 2010 campaign saw the Bears collect 14 wins, go 6-4 in Atlantic Sun play and achieve a bid to the conference tournament. Rooke’s appearance in the league’s championship event marked the seventh time she has made postseason play in her eight sea-sons with the program.

The 2010 season also saw Rooke help Charlotte Har-ris etch her name in the history books as the junior racked up an eye-popping 638 digs. Harris’ dig total was a program record and helped her garner All-Confer-ence first team and Libero of the Year honors.

In 2009, Rooke’s 200th win came as a part of a five-match conference winning streak that was the defining moment for the 2009 squad. Facing the loss of four key seniors, the 2009 team battled its way to eleven wins,

five of which came in the last six matches of the year.

In 2008, Rooke enjoyed her most successful season with the Bears and be-came the first volleyball coach in the school’s history to be named confer-ence coach of the year. Rooke earned the honor after guiding the Bears to an 18-10 (13-7 A-Sun) regular season record. The 2008 season featured the highest win total for the program in 14 years and top league win total in program history.

Under Rooke that season, Mercer was one of the top defensive teams in the nation, finishing the season ranked 16th in digs per set. Senior libero Claire Tucker, who was honored as an all-conference second-team player, finished the season 8th in the nation in digs per set (5.41). On the offensive front, senior setter Kelly Jansen finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in assists (3,196).

Not only was Rooke’s squad effective on the court, they also excelled in the classroom. Nine members of the 2008 squad were named to the Atlantic Sun Honor Roll. In 2007, sophomore Jen Darty broke the school single-season record for blocks per game (1.14), and block as-sists (95) while her older sister, Julie Darty finished her career as the school’s all-time career leader in kills per

game (3.18). In 2006, under Rooke, the Bears made their marks in the re-cord books. Jen Darty garnered A-Sun Freshman of the Year accolades, becoming the first Bear to earn the honor since Katie Plummer in 2001. Chelsea Gebben earned a spot in the NCAA record books, serving 22 consecutive points in a match against Savannah State. Mercer also set several records in the A-Sun, including the three-game kill (68) and assists (67) records in a match against UNC Asheville. In 2006 Bears also made an impact on the school record books, breaking six records in the season and career books.

In 2005, the Bears got off to a rocky start as they dropped 15 of their first 20 matches including five straight losses to open conference play. Rooke rallied her young team and chal-lenged them to play better down the stretch, and the Bears responded with six consecutive wins to close the regular season, including four straight in conference play. Mercer secured the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Tourney, marking their third consecutive trip.

In her first season with the Bears, Rooke’s guided her new squad to a 13-16 record and the sixth seed at the conference tournament. Rooke coached Katie Plummer as she finished her career at Mercer and became the first Bear to record over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Not only that, Rooke was responsible for moving Liz Kane to the libero position, which allowed her to rewrite the Mercer record books and go down as one of the best liberos in the program’s history.

Taking over a program and raising the bar is nothing new for Rooke. Prior to arriving at Mercer, she served as head coach for six seasons at two different schools where she experienced considerable success. In her first head coaching position, Rooke took over at South Carolina Aiken and went 64-42 in three seasons. While at USC Aiken, she coached two players who earned academic All-Ameri-ca honors.

Following her stint at USC Aiken, Rooke spent one season as an assistant coach at Rowan University before tak-ing the helm of the Profs’ program.

Once again, Rooke righted the ship and raised Rowan’s expectations. In three seasons at Rowan she went 65-27 and led the Profs to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. Her 2002 team finished with a 27-9 record and claimed the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for just the fifth time in school history, earning Rooke Coach of the Year honors.

An impressive student-athlete in her own right, Rooke was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, soccer and track in high school, earning first-team all-conference honors in all three sports her junior and senior years. She was also named MVP and team captain of the volleyball team during her senior year.

Following her stellar high school career, Rooke went on to star as a setter at Florida Southern. She was named team captain and MVP, as well as being named second-team all-conference her senior year.

Rooke earned her bachelors degree in sociology from Florida Southern in 1996, where she took her first coach-ing job as a graduate assistant. She resides in Macon and is married to former Mercer soccer standout, Max Rooke.

GREGWALKER

Assistant CoachFirst Season

Walker has an extensive coaching career that includes positions at the high school, collegiate and national levels. Most recently, Walker spent six months as an assistant coach with the Juniata men’s volleyball program. At Juniata, Walker played an intricate role in the development of 2011 AVCA first-team All-American Chris Vrooman.

Before his stint at Juniata, Walker was as both a student assistant coach and volunteer coach with the storied Penn State women’s volleyball program. From August-December 2009, Walker was the head coach of the Penn State women’s club team, helping the squad capture Penn State’s first League Championship against 10 other Division I club teams.

As a player, Walker assumed the roles of setter and libero for the Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball club team, helping the group achieve a top-20 ranking among NIRSA Division II programs.

Walker has also worked as a clinician at various camps and clinics, including Federazione Italiana Pallavolo (FIVB – Italy), USA Volleyball High Per-formance Camps and camps at the University of Oregon, Penn State, Stanford University, Villanova University and Emory University.

Over the past four years, Walker has also worked in coaching positions at both the Revolution Volleyball Club and the Highland Elite Volleyball Team (Keystone State Games).

An active member of USA Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches’ Assocation and the National Federatin of High School Sports, Walker is a 2011 graduate of Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness Studies.

DANFOLLETT

Athletic CoachFirst Season

Follet, a native of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, joins the staff after graduating from Juniata College in the spring of 2011. While at Juniata, Follett was a three-year starter and letterwinner for the Eagles and a key member of the 2009 squad that captured the Molten Division III National Championship. That same year, the team advanced to the championship of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association finals before falling to Penn State.

While competing for Juniata, Follett worked as an instructional coach at the Penn State Volleyball camp, helping develop campers’ fundamental skills while emphasizing the value of teamwork.

Prior to his time at Juniata, Follett was a highly decorated four-year player at Seneca Valley Senior High School. Follett’s list of individual accolades includes being named to the 2007 Fab-50 All-State team, a first-team All-WPIAL selection in 2007 and a second-team All-WPIAL selection in 2006. Follet also collected first-team all-section honors in three seasons with Seneca Valley.

Follett’s coaching experience began in high school, where he spend time as an assistant coach of the school’s women’s varsity team and head coach of the women’s JV team. In those capacities, Follett helped plan and organize practices, made in-game adjustments and helped organize the 2006 Seneca Volleyball Tournament.

In 2007, Follett also served as head coach of the Pittsburgh Elite U-15 Boy’s Volleyball Club, coaching the team in several tournaments including a trip to the USAV Boy’s National Tournament.

While coaching for Mercer, Follett plans to complete coursework towards a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Athletic TrainerSecond SeasonIndiana State, 2008

Paul Bohr was hired as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach in 2007. Bohr came to the Bears after spending the previous two years as an assistant strength coach at the College of Charleston.

While at C of C, Bohr designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs, along with speed pro-grams for men’s basketball, volleyball, softball, men’s soccer, golf, cross country, track & field, swimming and equestrian.

The Winter Park, Fla., native began his collegiate career as an assistant strength coach at UC Riverside in August 2004 prior to joining the UCLA athletics program in January 2005. While at UCLA, Bohr worked with the Bruins’ football program assisting with speed development while also teaching and monitoring exercise techniques and developing weight management and nutrition training for student-athletes. Bohr is a mem-ber of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Special-ist (CSCS). He is also a member of the International Sports Science Association (ISSA) and is a Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT), Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) and a Certified Sports Performance Nutritionist (SPN). He also is a certified member USA Weightlifting (USAW) as a Level 1 Club Coach.

Paul has been coaching and working with athletes since 1993, designing fitness and speed development programs. Paul worked with numerous professional athletes from teams such as the Miami Dolphins and Orlando Magic.

A 1989 graduate from UCF with a bachelor’s of business administration, Bohr later received his master’s de-gree in physical education from Cal State – Dominguez Hills.

As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation.

Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Under the leadership of promi-nent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Phar-macy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics,

the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist Col-lege of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins.

Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development of life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhanc-ing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family.

All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain ac-cess into their residence hall.

Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the gracious-ness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do.

The University offers a wealth of fascinating experi-ences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to perform-ing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organiza-tions to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.

Macon, Georgia is the host of the annual International Cherry Blossom Fes-tival, a 10-day event commemorating the beautiful Yoshino cherry trees that bring color to the Macon landscape each spring. Macon boasts more Yoshino cherry trees than even Washington, D.C. The annual festival features special performances and activities and draws thousands of people from literally all over the world.

Through the revitalization of Macon’s historic downtown area, local business owners host events like Taste of Downtown, where downtown food vendors - from gourmet to down-home cooking - display their specialties and First Friday, where businesses unite to bring suburban residents into downtown for a night of fun, food and entertainment.

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the state’s official sports museum, features exhibits, interac-tive fun areas and informa-tion about professional and amateur Georgia athletes, such as Hank Aaron and Bobby Jones.

Macon, Ga. is also home to Mercer’s Law School. The Walter F. George

School of Law, founded in 1873, is one of the oldest law schools in the

country. Named for Walter F. George, a 1901 graduate of Mercer’s law school who went on to become a justice of the Georgia State Su-

preme Court and later a U.S. Sena-tor, the law school has a rich and

distinguished history.

The Grand Opera House is a historic landmark theatre operated by Mercer University. It presents a wide variety of national touring Broadway shows, plays and concerts. Mercer University’s theatre and music departments also hold many of their productions in this beautiful theatre.

GEORGIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Located in Macon, Georgia, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is the country’s largest state sports muse-um at 43,000 square feet. Created in 1956 as the Georgia Prep Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame has been in existence for more than 50 years. It was ex-panded in 1963 to encompass prep, college, amateur and professional sports. In 1999, it moved into a per-manent new home in Macon.

The University Center houses all 17 of Mercer’s NCAA Division I ath-letics offices, training rooms and team rooms. Opened in 2004, it is a state-of-the-art facility that can hold up 3,200 spectators for basketball and volleyball.

UNIVERSITy CENTERMercer broke ground on the centerpiece of the Macon campus in the fall of 2001. The

University Center has become one of the premier venues in the nation for college bas-ketball and volleyball. The $40 million facility has become the focal point for almost all

campus activities, providing students with an area for study, a food court, and a coffee shop.

The “Street” is a tree-lined, sunlit indoor patio, providing students with an area to study, socialize, and dine on cuisine from the food court, including Chic Fil-A, Subway and Burger Studio. Bear Rock Cafe is a coffee shop and internet café for students to use either with high-speed connections throughout the floor area with the wireless internet connections, or with Bear Rock’s computers. Students can also relax and watch either of two flat screen televisions, or relax outside on the Patio overlooking the Greek Village and campus.

Both students and athletes have state of the art fitness facilities, with weight train-ing equipment and cardiovascular theater, as well as a 1/8 mile indoor track. The track overlooks the lower level, which has three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for intramural and recreation use.

Another distinguishing feature of the University Center is the 25-meter indoor swim-ming pool for use by both students and teams for lap swim and water strength and speed drills. Athletes have a separate weight room for use during team workouts with all the latest free weight and weight machine technology. Athletes and trainers also

The University Center is also home for Mercer University Athletics, with offices for all the athletics administra-tion and coaching staff. These offices allow potential student-athletes to see first hand the facility that will be their home base for their career at Mercer.

The University Center, on top of all the other amenities, is the home for Mercer basketball and volleyball. There are two full courts, one designated as the practice court, and the main floor in the center of the arena in the University Center. The main court is surrounded by 3,200 seats for basketball and volleyball, but can be ex-panded for up to 4,080 with floor seating for concerts. Three skyboxes at mid-court provide a birds-eye view of the action on the floor.

The main entrance into the Arena at the University Center is Mercer’s Heritage Hall. This is a collection recogniz-ing some of Mercer’s most important alumni, faculty and staff. There are many different displays, including the Mercer Hall of Fame which honors the accomplishments of Mercerians through the years. Displays also include

the history of Mercer Athletics and a History of Mercer itself.

WILLIAM D. UNDERWOODPresident Underwood has led Mercer during a period of dy-namic growth and development for the University. Since his ar-rival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by 18 percent to more than 8,200 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a master’s-level physician assistant program and a doctoral-level program in physical therapy and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leader-ship, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing.

Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer in 2009-10 met the criteria established by the Carnegie Foun-dation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Na-tional Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiv-ing funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance.

to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and down-town Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission pro-gram, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.”

Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Under-wood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was des-ignated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraor-dinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an

elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation.

President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he gradu-ated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Ap-peals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

JIM COLEJim Cole assumed the duties of Director of Athletics for Mercer University on July 1, 2010. Prior to that, he served as MU’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, heading up the Mercer Athletics Foundation (the fund-raising arm for Bears’ athlet-ics) concurrent with his time as a State Representative in Georgia.

A native of Augusta, Cole en-tered Mercer on an academic

scholarship in 1990 and lettered in baseball from 1990 to 1993. He was recipient of the Charles C. Morgan Outstanding Student-Athlete Award and graduated with honors from the University in 1993.

Cole was drafted as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1993 and was named the franchise’s “Organizational Player of the Year” and a finalist for the TOPPS Minor League “Player of the Year Award” in 1994.

After an injury ended his professional baseball career, he returned to Mercer in 1997 to earn his MBA while serving as a graduate assistant and pitching coach for the baseball team. In 1998 he served as pitching coach for the Madison Black Wolves minor league team in Madison, Wis. Cole then entered private business before being elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2004 (and serving in that capac-ity until 2010).

Cole served as the legislative voice under the Gold Dome for the constituents of House District 125 - which includes Jasper County and parts of Monroe, Jones and Lamar Counties. His legislative duties included membership on the Appropria-tions Economic Development Sub-Committee (to oversees important areas of the budget that deal with agriculture, community affairs, economic development and transporta-tion). In addition, Cole served on the Rules, Judiciary Non-Civil and State Planning and Community Affairs Committees.

Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Cole to serve as senior admin-istration floor leader in early 2009, having served formerly as assistant floor leader from 2007-2008.

Even after leaving the political arena to assume the role as Mercers A.D., Cole was called on to continue his commitment of service to the people of the state of Georgia. In 2010, he was elected by his former constituents in Georgia’s House and Senate to represent the 8th Congressional District on the state’s Department of Transportation Board.

Cole is an active community leader throughout the state. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. A graduate of Leadership Georgia, he is a member of Forsyth United Methodist Church.

Cole is married to the former Gaylyn Lawson of Forsyth, where they live with their two children, Caroline and Lawson.

The Mission of the Sports Medicine Department is to provide quality comprehensive healthcare to student-athletes. The health and well-being of student-athletes is the number one priority. Student-athletes have access to therapeutic services such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, nutritional counseling and preventative physical medicine.

The Mercer Sports Medicine department utilizes a state-of-the-art athletic training facility in the University Center. The athletic training room consists of a treatment, taping and rehabilitation area. The rehabilitation area is equipped with a treadmill, exercise bikes in addition to a variety of weights, resistance bands, medicine balls, and other rehabilitation equipment which can be used to facilitate injury rehabilitations.

The athletic training area also has an enclosed hydrotherapy room with an eight-person cold whirlpool and smaller extremity whirlpools. There are also offices for the staff and a physician exam room. The athletic training room also has easy access to the weight room and the University Center pool.

The facility is staffed by two full-time certified athletic trainers and six graduate assistant certified athletic trainers, a family practice physician and an orthopedic surgeon. The staff works with other group of health-care providers to bring a comprehensive care to the student-athletes and acts as a liaison with nutritionists, dentist, cardiologists, and many other specialists.

Rob Murphy came to Mercer in 2000-01 as director of the Sports Medicine Department, overseeing the healthcare related needs for the Univer-sity’s Division I sports program. During his tenure at Mercer, Murphy has overseen the sports medicine needs of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s soccer and baseball.

Murphy has established a professional relationship with Mercer Health Systems, Forsyth Street Orthopaedics and various other medical facilities in the greater Macon and Atlanta area in an effort to provide Mercer Univer-sity’s student-athletes with the most comprehensive healthcare available.

He is also active on campus promoting health and safety as a representa-tive on the University’s Alcohol Awareness Task Force and the Student-Health Advisory Committee.

Prior to coming to Mercer, Murphy attended graduate school at the Univer-sity of Georgia. While at UGA, he served as the athletic trainer for baseball and softball.

Prior to his arrival at Georgia, Murphy acquired clinical experience in Gainesville, Fla., as the Director of Athletic Training Services at the Physical Therapy Center, Inc. In addition, he served as the Head Athletic Trainer at Oak Hall School.

A native of Ocala, Fla., Murphy received his bachelors degree in exercise and sports sciences with an emphasis in athletic training from the University of Florida in 1994. As a student athletic trainer with the Gators, Murphy was named head student athletic trainer from 1993-94. He was also honored with a University Presidential Leadership Award in 1993.

The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport.

Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 250 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning.

Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following:• three top of the line power lift full racks• over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines• three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches

Paul Bohr was hired as the first full-time strength and condi-tioning coach in 2007. Bohr came to the Bears after spending the previous two years as an assistant strength coach at the College of Charleston.

While at C of C, Bohr designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs, along with speed programs for men’s basketball, volleyball, softball, men’s soccer, golf, cross country, track & field, swimming and equestrian.

The Winter Park, Fla., native began his collegiate career as an assistant strength coach at UC Riverside in August 2004 prior to joining the UCLA athletics program in January 2005. While at UCLA, Bohr worked with the Bruins’ football program assisting with speed development while also teaching and monitoring exercise techniques and developing weight management and nutrition training for student-athletes. Bohr is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Spe-cialist (CSCS). He is also a member of the International Sports Science Association (ISSA) and is a Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT), Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) and a Certified Sports Performance Nutritionist (SPN). He also is a certified member USA Weightlifting (USAW) as a Level 1 Club Coach.

Paul has been coaching and working with athletes since 1993, designing fitness and speed development programs. Paul worked with numerous professional athletes from teams such as the Miami Dolphins and Orlando Magic.

A 1989 graduate from UCF with a bachelor’s of business administration, Bohr later received his master’s degree in physical education from Cal State – Dominguez Hills.

The Mercer Athletics Foundation was created in 2007 as the fund-raising arm for Mercer Univer-sity Athletics. Since its inception, members of the foundation have contributed over $1.5 million. These funds have been used to undertake such projects as hiring a full-time strength and con-ditioning coach, enhancing recruiting budgets, providing additional scholarships and to help increase salaries to attract and retain outstanding coaches.

John W. Collier John graduated from Mercer University in 1966 where he played baseball and was captain his senior year. He received his J.D. in 1971 from the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, where he served on Law Review, and is a member of the Georgia and Florida Bar. He is a past member of Mercer Board of Trustees. John has more than 15 years of experience providing wealth management services and over 25 years of experience in the practice of law. After serving as an institutional consultant at Smith Barney, John joined Merrill Lynch in 2007. He is currently an Institutional Money Manager at Merrill Lynch.

BUILDING…• Atlantic Sun student-athletes set a new all-time record with 63.79 percent earning All-Academic honors by achieving at least a 3.0 GPA during their season of competition last year.• The A-Sun led all of Division I last year as the NCAA’s top academic women’s soccer conference; nine of 11 teams received national honors from the NSCAA for posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better, the highest percentage in the country.• ETSU baseball standout Paul Hoilman won his second-straight A-Sun Student-Athlete of the Year award becoming just the fourth person in A-Sun history to accomplish that feat. The 2010 National College Home Run Derby Champion posted a 3.95 GPA in math and was named a Lowe’s CLASS National finalist.• Belmont’s Mick Hedgepeth was named the 2010-11 NACDA Division I-AAA Scholar Athlete of the Year.• Kennesaw State’s Ben Greene earned the NCAA Elite-88 honor for having the best GPA among participants in the NCAA men’s golf national championship.

A conference record three teams reached postseason play; the A-Sun earned three postseason wins, and hosted three postseason games with ETSU reaching the semifinals of the CIT and Jacksonville notching a postseason win for the second-straight year (2010 NIT, 2011 CIT).• A record-setting three A-Sun teams advanced to postseason play in women’s basketball (Stetson/NCAA; FGCU/WNIT; USC Upstate/WBI), with FGCU playing in the postseason for the fourth-consecutive year at Division I; the Eagles posted their third national postseason victory in that span with a win in the WNIT last year.• The A-Sun earned national distinction in women’s basketball as one of only two Division I conferences to receive a grant from the NCAA to promote attendance nationally for women’s basketball - league attendance jumped more than 15%; the A-Sun also partnered with CollegeInsider.com to present the first national poll in women’s basketball for mid-major programs – a poll that showed FGCU in a top-ten ranking all year long.• A-Sun Baseball returned to a familiar lofty position on the national stage last year.
