ROMALDKIRK OPEN GARDENSSunday June 10th, 2.00 - 5.30pm
Once again Romaldkirk will be taking part in the National GardensScheme and raising money for its charities (10 open gardens).
Last year, although we had more than one catastrophically wet Sunday,£2.6 million was raised by the scheme!
Each year the N.G.S. has a "guest charity" for the year in addition tothose to which it donates every year. This year the Guest Charity is theAlzheimer's Society. This is a very worthwhile cause with Britain facing theproblem of an increasing aging population, so we hope lots of people will visitour gardens and help to provide financial support for the charities.
Cream Teas will be served in the Reading Room, and Lowfield Nurserywill be providing a Plant Stall. John & Sue Knights
ROMALDKIRK FAIR GARDEN STALLThis year a change for me. If you have any garden pots or
plants, or anything suitable to sell on the stall, they will be muchappreciated. Empty pots at any time soon, please.

Green Lane v Cotherstone Match by Mrs SabeyOne Tuesday afternoon I came along to support our school football
team, feeling slightly apprehensive as Green Lane are renowned for havinga strong team. Through sheer determination, skill and much improved teamwork our team scored a fantastic 6 goals, resulting in an exciting North Eastderby! The team worked noticeably better than previously, and it was due totheir hard work that Oliver was able to score one goal and Edward 5. Thecombination of Matthew (our ‘secret weapon’) in defence and Aidan inattack made the goals possible. The match ended in a 6-1 victory. A big'well done' to the whole team: Alex, Isaac, Floss, Cara, Aidan, Oliver,Matthew, Alfie and Edward. Looking forward to your next match!
Chess Report by GraceAlfie, Floss, Cara & I (aka Cotherstone Chess Team) went to
Barnard Castle Prep School for a rather disappointing chess match. First, weplayed Butterknowle, I won my match but Cara, Floss and Alfie did not.Next, we played Ingleton, when they won all their matches. After that wegot three biscuits each. Overall we won one match and got a pack of biccies!
Ingleton v Cotherstone Match by Cara & FlossWe went to Ingleton Primary to play a match. Their pitch was
really water-logged and really long! In the first half Edward scored onegoal, then in the second half Isaac, Oliver and Edward all scored. Ingletonmanaged a goal later on in the second half, so the end result was 1-4 to us!A great match, we were really pleased with the result.

COMPUTING NOTES (21)Printing Accents and Symbols
The earliest computers could print only about forty different characters, namely the capital letters A to Z, the numbers 0 to 9, and a few punctuation marks.Since then there has been a continual increase in the number of characters peoplewant to print, and the number of different languages that must be accommodated, sothat today there are many thousands of such symbols, and yet we still must controlall this from a keyboard that is little different from that of a nineteenth centurytypewriter. So it is not surprising that many different techniques have been devisedfor inputting such characters to a computer, and storing them in memory. Thenumber of different schemes adopted by different wordprocessors and operatingsystems can be quite confusing; all we can do in this article is to describe a systemthat should work on any modern computer, and show how to print just a few of thesymbols most often required in everyday typing.
Most desktop machines have a number pad at the right hand side of themain keyboard, duplicating the number keys along the top row, but laid out in asquare pattern like a calculator, while most laptops do not. Instead, a laptop'snumber pad must share a group of keys on the main keyboard. So the process ofinputting characters not provided on the main keyboard depends upon which sort ofmachine you are using..Desktop Computer. To input one of the characters in the table below, place thecursor in the required position, hold down the ALT key, and on the number padtype the three- or four-digit number given. When you release the ALT key, therequired character will appear where the cursor was resting.Laptop Computer. Firstly activate the number pad keys by pressing the NumberLock key. (It may be necessary to hold down the Fn key while you do this.) Thenusing these number pad keys, follow the same procedure as above. When finished, don't forget to press the Number Lock key again to turn it off.
It is clear that this process can become tedious if a document contains alarge number of these characters. A useful tip is to print out before you start, alongthe top of the document, all the characters you will need; then to insert a characteryou just Copy and Paste it in the correct position. When the document is complete, you can delete the top line.

YOUR PIANO IS OUT OF TUNEYour piano is out of tune. How do I know? Because it is impossible to tune
a piano, or any other keyboard instrument, so that all the notes are in tune. Thisdoes not mean simply that the whole instrument is a little above or below what isnow regarded as standard pitch. Last month's article on Musical Pitch explainedthat very few people, only those born with perfect pitch, can detect this. Muchmore noticeable, and more important, is the difference between the pitch of any twonotes, what musicians call the interval between them, and it is impossible to tunethe instrument so that these are all correct.
As you will know, when a note is played on the piano a small felt hammerhits the strings (there are usually three for each note) and sets them vibrating. Theymove too fast to see, but physicists can easily measure how many times they vibratein one second, what they call the frequency. The strings for the lowest note on thekeyboard make about 27 vibrations per second, while the top note makes about3500. Middle C, in the middle of the keyboard, has a frequency of about 256.
As you move up the keyboard from left to right you will notice that thepattern of white and black notes repeats itself every twelve notes. This is becausethe twelfth note above any note is one octave above it, an easily recognisedinterval. The two notes sound very much alike, "the same but different". Scientiststell us that this is because the upper note has exactly twice the frequency of thelower one. Now the octaves must be tuned correctly - otherwise everyone wouldcomplain the piano was out of tune. To a lesser extent the fourth note above anygiven note is easily recognised, and if the two notes are played together it is easy totell whether the interval is in tune. Ask the scientists again and they tell us that theupper note has exactly one and a quarter times the frequency of the lower one.
Now you may begin to see a discrepency. Starting with middle C, andmoving up four notes to the note E, its frequency should be 256 multiplied by one-and-a-quarter, and this comes to 320. Move up another four notes and you reach anote with frequency 320 multiplied by one-and-a-quarter, i.e. 400. Go up yetanother four notes and the frequency of the note you reach must be 400 multipliedby one-and-a-quarter, or 500. But this last note is an octave above middle C, so itsfrequency must be twice 256, which gives 512, not 500. This is just one examplefrom the multitude of inconsistencies that arise when attempting to tune all intervalscorrectly.
It is clear that some compromise must be devised, and tuners have beenwrestling with the problem for several centuries. Many books have been written onthe question and several solutions have been tried. Today the usual approach is tomake all intervals (except the octaves, of course) slightly wrong, but equallywrong, a system known as "equal temperament", rather than make some intervalscorrect and others even more noticeably wrong, as was the custom in theseventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Most of us are now so accustomed to hearingkeyboard instruments tuned to equal temperament that we ignore the slight out-of-tuneness. But a few musicians still prefer a system of unequal temperament, wherethe more frequently used intervals are in perfect tune, even though this makes someof the less often used ones badly out of tune. In recent years a few organs have beentuned unequally, although it must be said that most of these have soon beenreturned to the equal system. EDITOR

TEESDALE RECORD SOCIETY.
On a rather bracing May Bank Holiday Saturady the TeesdaleRecord Society had the first of its Summer outside meetings, thesubject for this meeting being Teesdale Industrial Archaeology. Agroup of about 15 followed the line of the old narrow gauge railwayfrom Middleton-in-Teesdale to Greenacres quarries in Lunedale. Thisline was first opened in 1895 to transport stone and limestone fromthe Greenacre quarry to Lonton sidings where it was transferred ontothe standard gauge railtrack, the cargo being used mainly for roadbuilding. The line was closed in 1922.
The first indication of the existence of the line is the oldconcrete base of the switch room located in a field by the side of theTeesdale Railway path close to Lonton. The next clue is the LontonRailway Sheds, recently converted into a dwelling, keeping the basicoutline of the old sheds. From here the line curves away from theMiddlton-in-Teesdale to Barnard Castle line to gradually climb upLunedale at a gradient of 1 in 20. Shortly after the Railway shedsthere was a branch line that goes to the Spring Top quarries justbelow Laithkirk Church. The southern entrance to the tunnel can stillbe found South of the Church. The Main line now goes under theMiddleton-in-Teesdale to Brough road at a location known locallyas Tunnel Turn and, yes, the tunnel is still there. Although blockedfrom the lower side the tunnel is clearly visible from the upper side. The tunnel gives you an idea of size. It is a narrow tunnel about 4 feetwide and also a quite low tunnel approximately 8 feet high, TheEngines used on the line were limited to 6 feet in height. The ZutielEngine was specially built to run on the line. From the tunnel the linefollows the contours of the fell as it makes it way up towardsKirkcarrion. The path of the line can be clearly seen either as a greensward on the moorland or as a narrow path skirting the east side ofKirkcarrion before making its way into the Quarry. It must have beenquite a sight to see the little engines working their way slowly upLunedale. Members and guests completed the walk by returning toMiddleton-in-Teesdale via the Pennine way.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 11th of June whenthe Society will visit the Friends' Meeting House in Cotherstone.Meet on the East Green at Cotherstone 7:00 pm. Ross Law

*****When I am with composers, I say I am a conductor. When I am withconductors I say am a composer. (Leonard Bernstein)
*****After hearing a rousing performance of Rule Britannia, King George VIsaid to Sir Malcolm Sargent, "I want you to include that in the programmewhenever I am present." "But, Your Majesty, how can we include it if I amabout to conduct a sacred work such as the St. Matthew Passion?" asked SirMalcolm. PRINCESS SALLY AND PRINCESS SELINAAs the pussies were enjoying a look around the zoo, on the other
side of the fence near the woods Mother was getting agitated, looking forher three pussies, who had been out all day. She called each by name, andcould not understand where they had got to.
Inside the zoo the keepers were getting ready to feed some of thelions in their cages. They had lots of raw meat, and the smell of food wasmaking them feel hungry. "Can we go home?" said Sophie, "I am so tired.""Yes," both pussies said, "just keep walking." So they did, but what theydid not know was that they had passed the gate twice already, and they hadnot noticed. Princess Sally was beginning to worry, but did not say any-thing. "I wonder why I cannot find the opening," she thought. So aroundthey went again, and this time Princess Selina also was worried, and said toPrincess Sally "Do you see the opening?" "No," said Princess Sally, "Ithink we will have to look very hard for a low wall if we are to get hometonight." Sophie said that she was scared, but the others said, "Don't be. Wewill look after you. Keep near the wall, for we don't want to be seen by thekeepers who are still feeding the smaller animals. We must make our way tothe far end, where I have seen a small gate we could jump over. Sh! I hearfootsteps." So they stopped in their tracks, lying low near the wall. Thefootsteps continued, so they started to creep forward again, trying to find thelittle gate. "Mother will be very worried," said Princess Sally, "but Sophieand I will find a way out." J. Scott
