2012-13 Season PreviewThe High Point University men’s basketball team will

have a new look for 2012-13 as the Panthers feature a more experienced front court than back court for the first time since Scott Cherry became head coach four seasons ago. Cherry’s previous three squads have been guard oriented, but he will have the luxury of a more well-rounded roster this year. The Panthers’ top two returning scorers and rebounders are senior forwards Corey Law and Branimir Mikulic. In addition, the Panthers have added two other forwards with some experience: fifth-year senior Allan Chaney and redshirt-freshman John Brown.

Cherry will look for others to step up and become leaders in the back court after Nick Barbour and Shay Shine finished their collegiate careers last season. Barbour is High Point’s No. 2 all-time scorer and led the NCAA in three-point percentage while Shine was an explosive guard who averaged 14.9 points in two seasons at HPU. The Panthers feature senior point guard Jairus Simms, sophomore Devante Wallace and junior Justin Cheek on the wing as well as four newcomers on the outside who will vie for playing time.

The Panthers will look for a breakthrough season after going 13-18 overall and 8-10 in the Big South last year. High Point ended the season with momentum: the Panthers went 5-3 in their last eight games. After tying for sixth in the Big South regular season, HPU beat Gardner-Webb in the first round of the Big South Tournament. The Panthers got a tough draw in the quarterfinals, facing eventual champ and No. 1-seed UNC Asheville in the quarterfinals and taking an 86-61 loss.

High Point has a balanced regular-season schedule, with 15 home games and 14 away from the Millis Center. The Pan-thers open with a home matchup against UNC Greensboro on Nov. 9 and also host William & Mary, Western Michigan and Eastern Kentucky in the non-conference season. High Point’s non-confer-ence road slate includes Appala-chian State, Indiana State, Western Michigan and Wake Forest as well as an appearance in the Dr. Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 28-29. In that tournament, HPU plays UT-Chattanooga in the first round and Austin Peay or Utah Valley State in the second round.

will play each of those teams twice during the regular season. The South Division features Charleston South-ern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian and Winthrop – High Point will play each of those teams once.

This year, the Big South Tournament is combined with both men’s and women’s tourneys at Coastal Carolina’s new HTC Center in Conway, S.C. The top two teams from each division get a first-round bye with first-round games on March 5, quarterfinals on March 7, semifinals on Saturday, March 9 and the championship game on March 10 at noon.

FRONT COURTHigh Point has its deepest front court in head coach

Scott Cherry’s four seasons, returning redshirt-senior Corey Law and senior Branimir Mikulic and gaining redshirt-senior Allan Chaney, redshirt-freshman John Brown and freshmen Cliff Cornish and Lorenzo Cugini.

Law has led the Panthers in rebounding in each of his first three seasons and has averaged 7.1 boards in 81 career games. He also averaged a career-high 9.5 points per game and shot 57.7 percent from the floor in 2011-12. Mikulic came in as a junior last year and averaged 5.6 points and 4.1 rebounds. An outside specialist, Mikulic shot 37.7 percent from three-point range.

Chaney is perhaps the most decorated basketball player ever to join the Panthers. A 6-foot-9 transfer from Virginia Tech, he was ranked No. 64 in the high school class of 2008 in ESPN’s Top 100 and was rated a four-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com coming out of New London High School in Connecticut. He went to the University of Florida and averaged 3.0 points and 2.1 rebounds in 23 games in 2008-09 before transferring to Virginia Tech. He sat out the following season due to

NCAA transfer rules before health issues sidelined him for the following two years. Now that he has been medically cleared to resume his basketball career, Chaney is work-ing toward his comeback on Nov. 9 when HPU takes on UNC Greensboro at the Millis Center.

Brown’s debut in a High Point uniform is also highly anticipated. The 2009-10 Florida 1A Player of the Year out of Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla., Brown attended Oldsmar Christian School the fol-lowing year and entered High Point as a freshman last year. After redshirting, the 6-foot-7 Brown is expected to bring an added dimension of energy and athleticism to the Panthers.

Cornish and Cugini will both provide depth and contend for playing time right away. Cornish, of Mary-land, is the biggest player on the roster and will provide a physical presence at 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds. He led his North County High School team to the region semifinals and led the county in rebounding in 2011-12. Cugini brings size at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds but will probably play more as a small forward for HPU. Known as a solid outside shooter who can play all over the court, he was part of two state championship teams at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio – the same high school Lebron James attended.

Senior Landon Harris also adds depth after getting action in 21 games last year. He walked on to the team last season after attending HPU for two years and was able to contribute meaningful minutes for the Panthers, playing 4.4 per game and averaging nearly a point and a rebound.

BACK COURTHigh Point returns three guards with significant expe-

rience and adds four newcomers for the 2012-13 season. Senior point guard Jairus Simms leads the group with

89 career games in which he has averaged 1.9 assists to just 1.1 turnovers along with 2.8 points per game. When called upon, Simms has been able to step up with games such as his 5-for-7 shooting night at Purdue last season.

Simms and HPU’s other eight guards will have to find ways to make up for the losses of Nick Barbour and Shay Shine, who last season averaged 20.4 and 15.6 points, re-spectively, finishing their collegiate careers among HPU’s all-time best players. High Point featured a great outside shooting game last season thanks to Barbour and Shine. Barbour led the nation with a .484 three-point percentage and Shine ranked third in the Big South at .397 in that category. Shine also started High Point’s last eight games at point guard and hauled in 5.4 rebounds per game. This year’s Panthers figure to still be a strong outside-shooting team with depth and options on the perimeter.

Sophomore Devante Wallace will be expected to take another step forward after a very strong finish to his first collegiate season. He started the last eight games of the season and averaged 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over that span, helping the team to a 5-3 record. In those same eight games, junior Justin Cheek averaged 5.3 points and 1.6 rebounds. The athletic wing showed the potential that was overshadowed at times by minor injuries over his first two seasons.

The Panthers have two newcomers who will vie for playing time along with Simms at the point: junior De-juan McGaughy and freshman Adam Weary. McGaughy has more experience after two seasons at Mercyhurst University-North East in which he was named a junior college All-American. McGaughy averaged 19.7 points and 5.2 assists last season. Weary joins High Point out of Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., where he helped his team to a 31-2 record and the No. 1 ranking in Tennessee according to MaxPreps last year. He was an All-State selection.

Junior Derrell Edwards brings a defensive presence that can help make up for the loss of Shine. He played for 2012 NJCAA national champ South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, and averaged 8.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in two seasons there. A combo guard, freshman Haiishen McIntyre brings dynamic scoring ability, joining High Point after av-eraging 24.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists at Harrisburg (Pa.) High School last year.

Sophomores Quincy Drye and Tré Duncan provide more depth in the back court and in practice after both earned playing time in eight games last year.

The 2012-13 season will be head coach Scott Cherry’s fourth as leader of the High Point University men’s basketball team. After a strong finish to the 2011-12 cam-paign, Cherry and his staff have energized the program with six new recruits to join 10 returners from last season.

Cherry brings a history of winning to HPU and stresses an upbeat style of play reminiscent of his coach at North Carolina, Hall of Famer Dean Smith. Cherry led High Point University to a six-win improvement in his first season, their first playoff victory in three seasons in 2010-11 and six wins in their last 10 games in 2011-12.

Cherry brought an outstanding record of success to HPU. He was a member of four Sweet 16 squads and won a national title as a player at North Carolina before he compiled a 210-107 record over 10 seasons as an as-sistant coach. In three transition seasons at HPU, Cherry’s record stands at 40-52. That includes a 31-12 margin at home.

The 11th head coach in the history of HPU, Cherry led HPU to a 15-15 overall record and 10-8 Big South mark in his first season in 2009-10, a stark improvement over the team’s 9-21 overall record and 4-14 league mark the year before his arrival. The program has received national exposure like never before, with guard Shay Shine being featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 1 and No. 2 plays on separate occassions and Nick Barbour becoming High Point’s first partici-pant in the 3-Point Championship. Barbour led the nation in three-point percentage and was a three-time All-Big South honoree.

Featuring a style similar to his playing days at UNC, Cherry’s players push the ball

up the floor, move the ball quickly and play pressure defense. The results were obvious in HPU’s first season under Cherry, as the team’s scoring offense improved from 64.4 to 72.3 points per game and HPU featured the conference’s leader in three-point per-centage in overall games (Barbour) and in conference games (Eugene Harris). In the next two seasons, the Panthers featured one of the top guard tandems in the region with Barbour and Shine.

In his career as a player and coach, Cherry’s teams have made 10 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tour-naments and three NIT trips.

Cherry joined High Point University after serving as assistant coach to Darrin Horn for two seasons – first at Western Kentucky and, when Horn became head coach at South Carolina, Cherry moved on to become top assistant with the Game-cocks. Alongside Horn at South Carolina in 2008-09, Cherry played an integral part in helping lead the Gamecocks to a 21-10 fin-ish that included a Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title and an appearance in the NIT. At Western Kentucky, Cherry as-sisted the Hilltoppers to a 29-7 mark, a Sun Belt Conference title, a No. 23 final national ranking and a historic trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 as a No. 12 seed.

Prior to joining the Western Kentucky staff, Cherry spent seven seasons at George Mason from 1999-2002 and 2003-07 work-ing alongside current Miami head coach Jim Larranaga. During Cherry’s tenure at Mason, the Patriots earned four postseason bids, including two NCAA Tournament ap-pearances, and went 140-79 (.639) overall

and an 82-40 (.672) in the Colonial Athletic Association. George Mason won the CAA regular-season title in 2005-06, earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and made it all the way to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed. On their way to the Final Four, George Mason upset Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and No. 1 seed Connecticut. The Patriots finally lost to eventual national champion Florida and finished the season with a program-best 27-8 record, including a 15-3 CAA mark. The Patriots advanced to the NIT in 2004, earning a pair of victories.

During his first stint with the Patriots from 1999-2002, Cherry helped lead the squad to three straight first- or second-place finishes in the CAA along with a 36-14 mark (.720 winning percentage) in league play. George Mason won the CAA Champion-ship to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and earned a bid to the 2002 NIT. Cherry spent the 2002-03 season at Ten-nessee Tech, helping the team to 20-wins and the Ohio Valley Conference title game.

A 1993 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in business administration, Cherry earned four letters for the Tar Heels basketball team and served as team captain as a senior. UNC went 107-33 in Cherry’s four seasons, going to the Sweet 16 every year, the Final Four in 1991 and 1993 and winning the 1993 NCAA title. Upon gradu-ation, Cherry played one season of profes-sional basketball for the AEL Basketball Club in Limassol, Cyprus.

Cherry is a native of Ballston Spa, N.Y. He and his wife, Cortney, have one son, Brody.
