OUR DONORS: BUSINESSES

Dear Friends,

Talking about one’s future is something that usually elicits joy. Most people have a clear picture of the things they hope to accomplish; positive, attainable goals such as graduation, a career, children, or retirement. For the kids at Adelphoi, the future is too often shaped like a question mark, or even a gray cloud. So many of our kids are trapped in the pursuit of day to day survival, the future is something that they often don’t ponder until it’s too late.

Survival shouldn’t be the only thing a youth has going for him or her. At Adelphoi, we endeavor to offer our youth so much more than just completing their treatment. Embedded in the administration of quality programming is the pursuit of a tangible, attainable future, for each and every youth in our programs.

Over the last 12 months, Adelphoi has made a point of enhancing programs that are designed to give youth a leg up on their future after Adelphoi. For example, the Adelphoi Promise is a scholarship program that offers Adelphoi youth the opportunity to attend a participating community college tuition-free. Last year, this program provided tuition assistance and transitional support to 30 youth who otherwise may have never even considered college. Adelphoi’s PRIDE Career Readiness and Vocational Program doubled in size last year, offering 3 new vocational tracks, including computer repair, automotive detailing and emergency medical response. Both programs provided opportunities for youth to gain marketable skills and education that will serve them far beyond their stay at Adelphoi.

Adelphoi’s educational facilities have expanded as well in the last year, with the construction of a 19,710 square foot school that includes 6 new classrooms, meeting rooms and a large cafetorium. The addition of this educational space allowed Adelphoi to improve its current facili-ties and to offer a new emotional support program for youth who need a high level of structure within a classroom environment.

Adelphoi’s goal is not just to provide a better environment for our youth in the present, but to equip them for what lies ahead. By providing individualized education programs, career readiness skills and vocational training, Adelphoi hopes to not only create a vision of a better future for our kids, but to give them the tools to attain that vision.

Throughout its history, Adelphoi has been fortunate

to experience growth that has included acquisition

of 23 residential structures that offer housing to

youth in crisis. Over the years, however, time and use

has taken a toll on the facilities. As part of a multi-

million dollar rehabilitation initiative, Adelphoi is

renovating these facilities into units that offer bright

open spaces, new surfaces and appliances, outdoor

recreation areas, and rooms for quiet reflection. To

date, Adelphoi has transformed 11 of its 23 houses

into homes that are more attractive, safer and offer a

better environment for treatment.

Sweeney Home benefitted from the agency-wide renovation project through the addition of new bedrooms, new dining and kitchen areas, open concept floor plan, and new flooring and paint.

I was in Colony Home for 6 months in 2010. The experi-

ences I had were life changing. The staff was amazing and

Adelphoi youth face many challenges while in place-

ment. Even more daunting, however, are the chal-

lenges that they face once they leave our programs.

Key to a youth’s success after discharge is being able

to obtain the education necessary to secure employ-

ment after graduation. To that end, Adelphoi offers

the Adelphoi Promise. The Adelphoi Promise offers

two years of education tuition-free at a participating

community college. Even more important, an Adel-

phoi administrator provides assistance to the youth

through the entire process, from application to

completion of a degree, to provide the best opportu-

nity for success for our youth.

Adelphoi Promise helped me realize that when I apply myself,

anything is possible. I turned my life around and now my future

is bright. I have great expectations for my life that I didn’t have

before the program. I would do it a million times over again. I am

forever thankful for the Promise program.

For many of the youth in Adelphoi’s programs, voca-

tional fields are their best option for achieving a

productive, independent future. Adelphoi’s PRIDE

program provides students with the knowledge that

they need to make appropriate career choices and the

vocational and job readiness skills necessary for

successful reintegration into the community. Adelphoi

also offers a vocational component that includes six

specific career tracks, including Culinary Arts, Building

and Grounds Maintenance, Small Engine Repair,

Emergency Medical Response, Computer Repair, and

Automotive Detailing. Through these programs, Adel-

phoi prepares youth to re-enter their communities with

increased self-esteem and a better knowledge of their

own abilities and aptitudes.

Youth in the Building and Grounds Maintenance track have an opportunity to harvest seedlings for transplantation in Adelphoi’s greenhouse.

I was in the Keystone House back in 2000 and I can definitely

say the experience changed my life for the better. Staff was

always there for me when I needed someone to talk to and help me
