STORYLINE In the last Olympic cycle, the Champions Trophy title and the Australian men’s team went hand in hand as they ran the table, winning the last four straight titles. Australia’s podium success came to a screeching halt at the London Olympics when Germany upset the favorites in the semi-final game, focing the Australians to settle for their first non-gold at a major international event in four years. Germany and the Aussies are in seraparte groups in Melbourne, but look for fireworks if the pair meet in the later rounds of the tournament. The Australians will have plenty of offensive power, epseically with the addition of Jamie Dwyer to the team. The eternal All-Star forward was a 50-50 prospect to be at the Champions Trophy as rumors of retirement and/or a longer layoff were rampant. But the the lure of a title on home turf was enough for Dwyer to suit up in Melbourne.

STORYLINE The Belgium men have been on a role in the last four years. Along with their women’s national team, they have climbed up the FIH World Ranking and rightfully earned a place among the world’s elite teams. To get to Melbourne, Belgium won the last edition of the Champions Challenge 1 after defeating India in the final game in Decemnber 2011. More recently, the Belgium men showed that they aren’t just tourists at the top level, after earning an impressive fifth-place finish at the London Olympics. Belgium plays a total team game, but if pressed to pick a star player, Tom Boon always seems to make the cut. He paced the Belgians with five goals in London. Provding Belgium with further depth is Jermone Dekeyser, who also packs a scoring punch for the young team.

STORYLINE It is anyone’s guess what German team will show up for the Champions Trophy in Melbourne. On one hand, there’s the team that swept through the London Olympics, earning the gold medal after an incredible performance. On the other side, there’s the team that finished a disappointing fifth at the last edition of the Champions Trophy. In fact, the Germans have walked away empty handed from the Champions Trophy in three of the last four tournaments, while winning two Olympic gold medals during that same time. Individually, Germany will rely on the servies of Matthias Witthaus, who is a scoring wizard from the field. On the penalty corner, Germany has the servies of Christopher Zeller to pull them through.

STORYLINE Will there be an Olympic hangover for Team England. After such a great experience in London (save the semi-final meltdown against the Dutch), the English have lofty expectations heading into the Champions Trophy in Melbourne. In 2010, England challenged for the gold medal at the Champions Trophy, but fell to the mighty Australian machine. It was one of the few times that the English found themselves in the Champions Trophy medal hunt – something that they hope to change by riding the wave from the Olympics. To do so, they will rely on the stoic leadership skills of Captain Barry Middleton along with the scoring touch of Ashely Jackson, who is a machine on the penalty corner for the British.

STORYLINE Everyone is waiting for India to show the spark that made them great back in their heyday. So far, the Indians have shown glimpses of their former glory -- like when they won the Olympic Qualification tournament in Dehli. But more often than not, they have disappointed their ravenous fan base – like when they finished in lat place at the London Games. The Indians were given one of the two precious wild card spots to join the field in Melbourne and they need to make the most of it or face tough questions back home and the prospect of returning to the Champions Challenge 1 level. The team has all the pieces in place with talent on the field and good leadership on the bench.

STORYLINE The Dutch have been the eternal bridesmaid in recent years, adding a bevy of bronze medals to their collection, while always missing out on the big final. The Netherlands has earned the bronze medal three times in the last five years at the Champions Trophy, while finishing fourth in the other two outings. In London, it looked like the Dutch had broken the bronze curse after they crushed Great Brtiain in the semi-final to earn a berth in the final game. But the gold was still out of reach for the men in orange, as they fell to Germany in the final. Indivudally, the Dutch will look to rebuild after losing Teun De Nooijer to retirement. Perhaps a younger, fresher Dutch team will come to Melbourne with no bronze curse hanging over their head.

STORYLINE Along with Belgium, New Zealand’s national team program has made perhaps the greatest strides in the last Olympic cycle than any other team. The Black Sticks are still looking for their first Champions Trophy medal, after narrowly missing their chance last year with a bronze medal loss against the Dutch. But for New Zealand, it is a major accomplishment that they are in their third straight year among the world’s top eight men’s teams. Consider before that, in 30 years of Champions Trophy history, New Zealand had only four total appaearances. It’s difficult to pick any one player out of the well-balanced line-up to single out as one to watch. With Nicholas Wilson, Simon Child and Stephen Jenness the Black Sticks are well-poised to make a run for their first medal.

STORYLINE Much like its rival India, Pakistan hockey has seen better days. Albeit in the last Olympic cycle, Pakistan’s performaces have been much more stable than India’s finishes , it still doesn’t erase the fact that the nation has gone without a medal at the Champions Trophy for nearly a deacde. The last time Pakistan won a medal was the Champions Trophy bronze in 2004. Pakistan has one of the most storied histories at the Champions Trophy. The nation is the founder of the event and has missed playing in the annual tournament only five times.
