Memorial AwardsROBERT J. SEXTON AWARD Gregory GallagherA 1947 graduate, Robert demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement and scholasticperformance, earning him the title of “Typical Ionian.” Robert was a member of the footballand basketball teams, the speech and debate team, and class president all four years. Theaward is a testament to his legacy and celebrates young men who exhibit this dedication andtalent.

JOHN LANCE GEOGHEGAN AWARD Brian AndersonJohn Lance Geoghegan graduated from the Prep in 1959. Following his desire to help others,Jack joined the army and was a soldier in Vietnam until his death on November 14, 1965 inbattle in the la Drang Valley. Jack was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the SilverStar. The memorial award honors exceptional dedication to the interests of others.

JAMES B. RYAN AWARD Quinn HefferonA 1969 graduate, James was a well-rounded young man, excelling in academics, athletics, andextracurricular activities. He was an active member of the track team, the science club, andhad a flair for photography. The award recognizes exemplary qualities as a student and Catholicgentleman.

BROTHER JOHN F. HAMILL MONOGRAM AWARD Gregory GallagherBrother John F. Hamill served as Headmaster before his death in 1947. He left an indeliblemark on the school with his Irish humor. The award is given to the best athlete in the graduatingclass as voted upon by his peers.

VAL J. PALMER AWARD Luke WootersA 1976 graduate, Val proved himself to be a true Catholic gentleman, demonstrating care forothers and dedication to his studies and interests. During his four years at the Prep, he was amember of the tennis team, National Honor Society, Iona Action group, and Young ChristianStudents. The award honors fairness, concern, and dedication inherent in good sportsmanship.

W. VAUGHN CRONIN AWARD Timothy McCarthyW. Vaughn Cronin, a 1949 graduate, was an exceptional athlete at the Prep, exhibitingsportsmanship, dedication and persistence. He was active in football, basketball, and track.The award celebrates outstanding service and contribution to varsity and intramural athleticsduring four years at the Prep.

Memorial AwardsEDMUND RICE AWARD Dylan GrayIn honor of the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Blessed Edmund Rice, theaward recognizes Christian Brother values instilled at the Prep. Exhibiting successful Christianleadership, the honoree has taken full advantage of the spiritual, educational, social, and athleticopportunities at Iona.

PETER L. WATERS AWARD Timothy HefferonPeter L. Waters was the track coach at Manhattan College from 1926-1943. The College offersthis award to a graduating member of the track team, recognizing excellence in schoolcitizenship and student leadership.

AMERICAN LEGION AWARD Joseph NoscheseThe American Legion is a veterans’ organization celebrating patriotism and community service.The award recognizes courage, loyalty, and service to the Prep.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AWARD Paul MadonnaFounded in 1882 by a parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus areCatholic gentlemen committed to charity, unity, patriotism, and fraternity. The award celebratescourtesy and service extended to others.

BROTHER JOSEPH DOORLEY AWARD Jack KellyBrother Joseph Doorley became the Prep’s first headmaster in 1916. The award honorscontribution to and enhancement of the Iona Prep tradition.

PAUL E. VERNI VALEDICTORY AWARD Vincent MacriA 1981 graduate of the Prep, Paul was a member of the football and swimming teams, secretaryof the National Honor Society and Student Faculty Council, Public Relations captain, andmember of Big Brothers and the Captain Corps. He was on the honor roll all four years andwas the valedictorian of his graduating class. In February of his senior year, Paul was diagnosedwith leukemia. After completing his freshman year at Georgetown University, Paul died onOctober 14, 1982. The award celebrates his memory and dedication to excellence. Presented byJohn Verni ’80, Chairman of Iona Preparatory’s Board of Directors, brother of Paul ‘81.
