they call this “the House that love built…®”

while that sentiment is true, the word “built” falls short of capturing the love people have experienced here for 28 years. for one thing, “built” is in the past tense—when in fact, love is ever present here; your gifts continue to sustain it daily. for another, “built” relegates love to a structure—when it actually extends far beyond the walls and represents a way of being, both inside and out—in how we manage our resources, conduct our events, and treat our guests.

on the following pages, you’ll meet Hannah, avrey, yazmin, and cooper—four children whose stories represent the many children and families for whom we made things better last year. during 2011, our Houses welcomed 1,512 families for 11,838 nights (up 23 percent from 2010). and our outreach program funded oral health care services for an additional 24,500 children (up 85% from 2010).

no matter how you’re involved here, it doesn’t take long for your heart to “respond automatically to other people’s joys and sorrows.” and while we endure sorrows, the joys are far more prevalent.

through both joy and sorrow, what occurs—between guests and other guests, guests and staff, guests and volunteers, and guests and donors—is connection at the most profound level. the results are gratitude and hope—comforts that are truly reciprocal.

wHen cooper’s mom, laleya, took him to

his doctor’s appointment on december 5, 2011, she

could not guess that two days later they would be on

an emergency flight to portland, where he would begin

months of treatment for leukemia. with little notice,

laleya was forced to leave behind her husband, three

other children, and a close-knit community in alaska.

she arrived in portland without family or friends, facing a

medical crisis with 15-month-old cooper by herself.

But laleya soon discovered she wasn’t alone. last year,

1,512 families like hers stayed at portland’s two ronald

mcdonald Houses.

with their relatives in alaska, laleya and cooper gained

an extended family that would help them through the

months to come. families who arrive as strangers quickly

find ways to connect with staff, volunteers, and most

importantly – each other.

it was easy for laleya to share her worries and fears

with parents facing similar challenges, with whom she

could also celebrate the joys of healing. But equally,

it was small things like watching football together on

sunday afternoons, carpooling to the store, and helping

with housework that dispelled the isolation and anxiety of

those uncertain months.

wHen you’re ten-years-old and love to play the

piano, you don’t want to give it up, even if — like Hannah

— you’ve been diagnosed with germinoma of the brain.

this rare disease occurs in only one-in-14 million people

and requires extended periods of treatment. for Hannah,

this meant traveling with her parents, richard and ling,

from their home in coos Bay to oHsu. the five-hour

trip didn’t leave much time to play the piano. when they

found the ronald mcdonald House, that changed.

at her “home away from home,” Hannah could practice

the piano before she went to bed. she could play her

favorite games on the wii, just like she did at home. in the

mornings, her mom could walk with her to the classroom

at the hospital, where Hannah kept up on her schoolwork.

while Hannah studied, ling could do laundry, check

email, or tidy up their guest room.

it’s hard to measure the value of familiar routines. But

after months of displacement, Hannah and ling could

truly appreciate their comfort. every reminder of home is

enough to erase fears and settle anxiety about the future.

with the uncertainty surrounding Hannah’s rare diagnosis

and specialized treatment, the ronald mcdonald House

offered their family an oasis of stability.

yazmin wants to Be a nurse. But her senior year

in high school was interrupted when doctors diagnosed

her with a brain tumor. at a time when most teenagers

are applying to college, she was uprooted from her home

in umatilla to come to portland for treatment.

she stayed five weeks at the ronald mcdonald House

with her grandmother emma, who only speaks spanish.

yazmin had to translate conversations with her doctors

and nurses so that her grandmother could understand.

at rmHc, the two of them found bilingual resources

and met other spanish-speaking families who helped

them feel at home.

yazmin didn’t let her diagnosis distract her from her

long-term goals. the ronald mcdonald House gave

her a quiet place for schoolwork so she could keep up

with her classmates and graduate on time. she used

the house computers to work on papers for school,

and to communicate with her teachers over email about

assignments.

after completing treatment, yazmin is more determined

than ever to become a nurse so that she can support

other people. the ronald mcdonald House helped

make sure that even a brain tumor couldn’t derail her

from that goal.

leukemia treatment doesn’t follow a convenient

schedule. the healing process can take years, with

many ups and downs. avrey, from redmond, was first

diagnosed at age four. now eight, she has spent nearly

half of her life visiting the ronald mcdonald House.

for her family, the diagnosis changed their lives. “Her

treatment pretty much takes up all of our time,” explains

her mom, christal. “i’ve been unemployed for the last

four years, just doing avrey’s stuff.”

families with seriously ill children must deal with many

challenges, not all of which are medical. rmHc helps

them stretch their resources for however long it takes to

focus on what is truly important – their child’s healing.

“financially, it would be really hard for us,” says christal.

“staying in a hotel is expensive, and we have to come up

weekly, and sometimes for months at a time. we would

possibly even have to move our family up here.”

instead, the ronald mcdonald House eases the

financial burden and provides a community of support.

it has helped sustain avrey and her family through four

turbulent years.

“we’re so thankful,” says christal. “i can’t imagine

going through this without having some place to stay.”

rmHc’s outreacH program reached 85% more children in 2011 through its support of pediatric oral health care programs. what does that number truly mean? it represents thousands more children who will see a dentist this year, and who will receive treatment that they wouldn’t otherwise. it also represents thousands of parents who will feel better about finding care for their children, which they wouldn’t be able to afford on their own. one partner reflected, “if the dental clinic could talk, there would be many stories of determination, perseverance, resilience, and impact.”

tHe outreacH program focuses on expanding

access to preventative and restorative, pediatric oral

health care. last year, rmHc supported services to

approximately 24,500 children in oregon and southwest

washington by awarding grants totaling $159,886 to ten

non-profit partners that provide oral health programs in

communities across our region.

rmHc uses a portion of the proceeds from donation

boxes at mcdonald’s restaurants and matching money

from rmHc global to fund the outreach program,

impacting children’s health care at the grass-roots

level. the outreach grants support a variety of different

services, including school-based programs, mobile dental

vans, and community clinics.

eacH volunteer impacts rmHc in their own way - whether it’s inside the houses, at special events, in a leadership role, or in the community. By contributing their talent and time, volunteers make families stronger and rmHc better. 92% of guest families said that volunteers helped make their stay easier in the last year.

rmHc’s volunteers are motivated by many reasons. said one, “it makes me a better me. i’m a better person when i do it.”

volunteers have a hands-on impact in the lives of children and families at ronald mcdonald House charities. volunteering is a very personal way to become involved in rmHc’s community of support. last year, volunteers dedicated 11,824 hours, providing services valued at $260,000. a few of the ways volunteers support rmHc include:

Helping around the House in-House Hosts provide ongoing support with housekeeping and cleaning. they create a welcoming atmosphere that makes families feel at home.

Making a meal whether it’s a barbecue night, taco bar, or pancake breakfast, meal groups provide home-cooked food for families at rmHc four to seven times a week.

Service groups volunteering together is a great way to build team camaraderie. service groups of all kinds help with housekeeping, gardening, and special projects.

Events event volunteers help behind-the-scenes to make rmHc’s major fundraising events a success. volunteering is a cost-effective way to become involved in rmHc’s annual auction, golf tournament, and social event.

Speakers Bureau members of the speakers Bureau are trained to advocate on behalf of rmHc in the community by speaking or representing the charity at public events to raise awareness and support.
