A MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL PRODUCER On behalf of the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society Board I would like to welcome you to the 2012 Edmonton International Jazz Festival. In continuing the 30 plus year tradition of a world-class celebration of jazz, we are all in for perhaps the best festival yet! 65 sets of music presented at 9 venues by an amazing array of artists from around the world.

Perhaps the pinnacle of this year’s festival will be jazz legend Wayne Shorter, or trumpeter Chris Botti? Brazilian songstress Eliane Elias or fusion guitar god Mike Stern? What ever your tastes are there is sure to be something for you!

It is one of our missions to connect as many new people to jazz as possible so we have brought back the very successful Johnny Jazz Pass – giving bearers access to up to 39 shows over the ten days of the Festival for just $99! New this year we have added a Johnny Jazz Weekend Pass for $49. Pick the weekend that works best for you and explore up to 18 sets of music, just over $ 3 per set! These passes allow you the flexibility and the extremely affordable value to explore who you don’t know. After all, it’s not about who you know, it’s about who you DON’T KNOW that might surprise you!

An overwhelming amount of time and effort from many committed people contribute to the creation and delivery of this annual festival. On behalf of the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society board of directors, administration, crew leaders, volunteers and artists, we hope your experience with the 2012 Edmonton International Jazz Festival is a wonderful one and something that you will help spread the word about for years to come.

Kent Sangster

The JAZZWORKS CREATIVE SMALL GROUP WORKSHOP (CSGW), an educational component of the 2012 Edmonton International Jazz Festival, is a professional development workshop that has been created by the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society (EJFS) for university/college aged musicians, young jazz professionals and exceptional high school students. Under the direction of Joel Gray and Kent Sangster, this summer outreach program provides an inspired setting for collaboration, development and learning through mentorship. Selected performers from the 2012 Edmonton International Jazz Festival line-up have committed to share their knowledge and experience by leading seminars on various topics including, but not limited to: performance, composition; professionalism; and the business of music.

Participants are selected through audition and placed

in small ensembles consisting of full rhythm section and a horn section. In this one-week intensive, the aspiring musicians are given the opportunity to further develop their skills within the jazz realm with exposure to adjudications, seminars, rehearsals, and a concert performance during the Edmonton International Jazz Festival.

This experience is a once in a life-time opportunity for growth in the presence of established International, Canadian and Alberta musicians while playing alongside peers.

Wil’s musical history has two rewarding eras: his work as a singer for two highly recognized Cuban groups, Cumbre and Maraca, and for the past four years, leading his own orchestra, Wil Campa y Su Gran Union. His music is influenced by the styles of the 40s and 70s, and his own style is a mix of both generations’ rhythms, creating the Son. A story that began in the Cuban countryside has taken him all over the world. Wil has the heartfelt acceptance of the Cuban people, for his passion and eagerness to keep the Son alive. Is this yet-another revisiting of Gershwin’s classic Porgy and Bess? Not quite... Médéric Collignon, notoriously, is not one to follow the tracks of others. Known for his shouting, his deliberately trashy bouts and his flashes of genius, he has taken on this monument using Miles Davis’s version as a starting point, with some insolence. Backing him is a power trio (named Jus de Bocse in jest) which sounds like a big band. The result is disarming, and has attracted a lot of reactions. It is a kind of artificial, multicolored opera, dense and powerful. W W W.MYSPACE.COM/MEDERICOLLIGNOFFICIAL

In 1964, Miles Davis invited Wayne to tour with his band which included Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Ron Carter. In 1970, he formed Weather Report with Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vitous. With his album Alegria, an expanded vision for large ensemble, Shorter won a 2003 Grammy Award. In 2005, Shorter released the live album Beyond the Sound Barrier, which earned him an additional Grammy. Shorter marked another musical milestone in 2007 by pairing up with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, and a handful of the world’s best symphony orchestras to unveil his

Jerry has known Danny Oore and Simon Fisk for years. A little over a year ago when he began to think about the trio form for his next project it was their artistry and their sound that seemed to fit what he heard. Jerry had been toying with how to create using the structure of the trio but without it sounding like a trio. The two musicians bring something new to the trio palate, Simon: bass and cello, Danny: tenor, soprano and baritone saxophone. The result is effortless and multi layered.

Formed in 1981 by composer & pianist Kristian Blak, who has written most of the material for the group, it has included from the very beginning musicians from other countries. Over the years many musicians and artists have contributed to Yggdrasil’s projects, which include visual art, poetry, ballet, opera, concertos in grottos.
