The rst battle (1791), The Battle on the Banks of TheWabash resulted in the greatest loss ever suffered by the United States Army! Nine

hundred of this young nations 1200 soldiers were killed or mortally wounded at the handsof nearly 1500 warriors under the command of Little Turtle and Blue Jacket. In 1794The Battle of Fort Recovery took place on the same triangle of land. However, with theprotection of the fort, nearly 250 soldiers were able to resist a relentless two day attack by2500 warriors. Miami & Erie Canal

22 S. Water St. New Bremen, OH 45869 - www.meccainc.oThe Miami & Erie Canal was signicant in thedevelopment of Ohio as settlers found an easier way intothe wilderness and commerce found a cheaper route tomarkets. Beginning in 1825, it took 20 years to construct

the 249 miles of canal from Cincinnati to Toledo and costmore than $8 million. Irish, French and German immigrantwho labored for 30 cents a day plus a jigger of whiskey, manually moved trees, rocks and soil to create thewaterway through the wilderness. The peak year for thecanal was 1851 with over 400 boats moving freight andpassengers. As railroad use increased, commercial use ofthe canal diminished. The nal blow was the Great Floodof 1913 which destroyed portions of the waterway.

A great place to begin local exploration of the canal is theMiami & Erie Canal Visitors Center at Lock One in NewBremen. The center offers numerous exhibits and displays

and the lock has been restored to its 1910 appearancewith wooden gates and a spillway bypass. Just north of thvillage along the canal is the Keunning-Dicke Natural AreaThe 67 acre parcel, with a pond, prairie area andwoodlands, provides a great spot for primitive camping, picnicking or just enjoying nature.

In St. Marys, Memorial Park is home to the Belle of St.Marys, a replica canal boat and also features a coveredbridge, clock tower and a lovely brick walkway along thecanal trail to restored Lock 13. While in St. Marys, checkout Grand Lake St. Marys. The 13,500 acre manmade

body of water originally served as a source of waterfor the canal.

    DID YOU

KNOW?Did you know that boats on the Mia& Erie Canal typically traveled at a raof four to ve miles per hour?

    Positive Progress

In the early 1800s It took an army of men to construct Grand Lake St.Marys and now, more than 160 years later, an army of citizens is hardat work to improve the water quality of this grand body of water.

With a mostly rural, agricultural watershed, over the many decadesa major algae growth developed on the lake. Concerned citizensand groups in the area formed the Lake Restoration Commission(LRC). They are working with state and federal agencies andlegislators to nd solutions to the algae issues that have plaguedthe lake in the past. They have completed a strategic action planwhich identies solutions to the problem including sedimentremoval, chemical treatments, aeration, decreased rough sh,water level management and restored wetlands. Some of theseaction items have already been implemented or are currentlybeing tested on the lake.

The Lake Restoration Commission wants to bring the lake intoecological balance. The key to solving the lakes algae issueis to approach it as a large puzzle and to realize it will takemany pieces to complete the task. The good news is manyof those pieces are currently in play and the work continues.

    DID YOU

KNOW?Did you know that boats on the Mia& Erie Canal typically traveled at a rao our to fve miles per hour?

recognize the significance of the military events that occuredthere, and to give a final resting place to all soldiers who died inthe battles. The obelisk memorial and burial crypt underneathwere built in 1912 and dedicated on July 1, 1913.
