GROAT, Linda; WANG, David Architectural research method

A practical guide to research-just for architects From searching for the best glass to prevent glare to determining how clients might react to color choice for restaurant walls, research is a crucial tool that architects must master in order to effectively address the technical, aesthetic, and behavioral issues that arise in their work. This book's unique coverage of research methods is specifically targeted to help professional designers and researchers better conduct and understand research. Part I explores basic research issues and concepts, and includes chapters on relating theory to method and design to research. Part II gives a comprehensive treatment of specific strategies for investigating built forms. In all, the book covers seven types of research, including historical, qualitative, correlational, experimental, simulation and modeling, logical argumentation, and case study and mixed methods. Complete with real-life examples of how good research can be used from project inception to completion, Architectural Research Methods is an essential reference for architecture students and researchers as well as architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and building product manufacturers.

Landscape Architectural Research: Inquiry, Strategy, Design

A practical, single-source guide tosuccessful strategies for landscape architecture research As the scope of landscape architecture expands to engage with other disciplines, and streams of information directing this field continue to grow and diversify, it becomes increasingly important for landscape architects to be able to implement a range of effective research strategies when seeking, creating, and validating knowledge. Landscape Architecture Research offers a framework for advancing better design thinking solutions by supplying readers with a system of inquiry tactics that open up a wider range of research possibilities. With a logical and innovative approach that favors legitimacy of knowledge based on collective, grounded practices, rather than strict adherence to protocols drawn only from scientific models, this comprehensive, illustrated guide produces a sound argument for establishing a new paradigm for legitimizing research quality. Landscape Architecture Research presents:

• Case studies that show how the range of presented research strategies have been successfully used in practice

• New perspective on the relationship between theory, research, practice, and critique, a relationship that is specific to landscape architecture

• Detailed coverage of the ways that new knowledge is produced through research activities and practical innovations in landscape architecture

The first and only book on this topic of growing importance in landscape architecture, Landscape Architecture Research keeps professionals and students in step with the latest developments in landscape architecture, and delivers a dynamic and flexible game plan for verifying the integrity of their work.

AAVV Total Housing

Total Housing is a demonstration of the virtues of high and medium density multi-family homes, and an antidote to urban sprawl. The selection of works in Total Housing (in hard copy and on its supplementary website: www.actar.com/totalhousing/) spans a period coinciding with the height of the housing boom, and consequent bust, experienced in most “developed” economies in the first decade of the 21st century. From among the vast built production of this period, Total Housing selects 61 projects from 22 countries that exemplify outstanding innovations in construction systems, spatial organization, models of unit aggregation, and integration of the residential program into the complex of functions that make up our cities. This book is a design manual as much as a reference for future good practices. Its structure follows a simple sequential order of the number of homes included in each project, revealing that interesting design solutions are found in big and small projects alike. The book also contains detailed plans of 17 of the featured projects.

GAUSA, Manuel Open: arquitectura y ciudad contemporánea

PEVSNER, Nikolaus A History Of Building Types

Available again in paperback, this first survey of building types ever written remains an essential guide to vital and often overlooked features of the architectural and social inheritance of the West. Here Nikolaus Pevsner shares his immense erudition and keenly discerning eye with readers curious about the ways in which architecture reflects the character of society. He describes twenty types of buildings ranging from the most monumental to the least, from the most ideal to the most utilitarian. More than seven hundred illustrations illuminate the text. Both Europe and America have been covered with examples chosen largely from the nineteenth century, the crucial period for diversification. Included are national monuments, libraries, theaters, hospitals, prisons, factories, hotels, and many other public buildings; churches and private dwellings have been excluded for practical reasons. The author is concerned not only with the evolution of each type in response to social and architectural change, but also with differing attitudes toward function, materials, and style.

MATEO, Josep Lluís; SAUTER, Florian Natural Metaphor. An anthology of essays on architecture and nature

ISOZAKI, Arata Arata Isozaki

Arata Isozaki’s (b.1931) work blends an Eastern architectural style with emerging global trends, and his theories have been important in bringing Western architecture to Japan This book presents the most comprehensive selection available of his built and unbuilt projects from the beginning of his career to the present day, and is extensively illustrated with drawings, silkscreens, sketches and models from the Isozaki Office Archive. Each chapter features introductory essays by Ken Tadashi Oshima and theoretical texts by Isozaki, most of them published here for the first time

BLUNDELL-JONES, Peter Hans Scharoun

Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) was the most significant German architectural Modernist of the 1920's, staying in the country during the Third Reich to re-emerge during the 1950's. Achieving recognition with his controversial house for the Stuttgart Weissenhofsiedlung in 1927, his experiments with free planning and dynamic interior space continued throughout the wartime years. Post-war he emerged with a consolidated architectural philosophy exemplified by the Philarmonie concert hall in Berlin (1956-63) which remains the most sucessful 20th century model for this building type. This monographic overview of Scharoun's life and work explores his theoretical stance in relation to his contemporaries.

Light and Emotions: Exploring Lighting Cultures. Conversations with Lighting Designers

In addition to its practical functions, such as helping to optimize safety and security, lighting also has another principal task creating emotions. Light and color can be used to achieve the most varied and astonishing effects. These effects are dependent on the project and spatial environment, but they also depend in large measure on cultural context. This study is based on forty-seven interviews with leading lighting designers from North and South America, Europe, and Asia. For the first time, it explores in a systematic fashion what aesthetic, emotional, and atmospheric tasks a good lighting design can accomplish. The international diversity of the interviewed designers makes for surprising insights. Universal constants are pointed out, but so are the remarkable differences in reception and effect that are occasioned by different societies and cultures. It is imperative, then, for professional lighting designers and architects to familiarize themselves with these lighting cultures, and this book offers an informative and stimulating opportunity to do so.

HERTZBERGER, Herman Herman Hertzberger: Articulations

In a career spanning 40 years, Herman Hertzberger has focused on creating livable, workable spaces that not only make innovative use of otherwise banal urban landscapes, but also encourage their occupants to recreate these structures to fit their needs. This volume is a comprehensive monograph of this Dutch architect. The work provides a sampling of his buildings and projects, as well as writings and sketches from his notebooks. From schools and housing projects to offices and theatres, Hertzberger's concern for individuality, utility and sustainability in architecture have earned him an enthusiastic following especially among those interested in urban renewal. In words and pictures, this volume offers a glimpse of Hertzberger's ideals and creative process, the problems he encounters, and his solutions.

HALL, Peter; ABRAMS, Janet Else/Where: Mapping — New Cartographies of Networks and Territories

ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING charts the ascendancy of mapping as a powerful interdisciplinary strategy, one that links people and places, data and organizations, and physical and virtual environments. Traditionally written by history's victors, maps are gaining new currency in our information-saturated age as a means of making arguments and processes visible. Mapping technologies today are as diverse as the agendas driving them: social networks are mapped with dynamic digital interfaces; buildings are mapped with lasers; cities and regions are mapped by satellite. Illustrated with nearly 300 images, from archival woodcuts to Web-based maps and GPS drawings, ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING explores how cartographic techniques are being adapted to map the emerging landscapes of electronic communication. It showcases cutting-edge projects in graphic and industrial design, art, architecture, and technology by an international roster of writers, artists, and designers at the forefront of locative media practice. ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING proposes—by visual example and written analysis—that mapping is a fundamental design process that increasingly shapes the physical and conceptual dimensions of contemporary society.

ALLEN, Stan

Practice - Architecture, Technique and Representation: Revised and Expanded

Conversant in contemporary theory and architectural history, Stan Allen argues that concepts in architecture are not imported from other disciplines, but emerge through the materials and procedures of architectural practice itself. Drawing on his own experience as a working architect, he examines the ways in which the tools available to the architect affect the design and production of buildings. This second edition includes revised essays together with previously unpublished work. Allen’s seminal piece on Field Conditions is included in this reworked, revised and redesigned volume. A compelling read for student and practitioner alike.

WHEELER, Stephen M.; BEATLEY, Timothy Sustainable Urban Development Reader

RINKE, Mario Before Steel: The Introduction of Structural Iron and Its Consequences

An original and absorbing cross disciplinary look at the many-layered connections between architecture and engineering in the 19th century, this book will captivate anyone interested in how the style of the modern city evolved when iron became the primary building material used. Extensively illustrated with photos and schematics, this book takes the reader into the massive social transformation and increased industrialization of Europe through the 1800s, showing how the new, formable building materials re-defined architecture. Fundamental technology euphoria in the widespread belief in progress, as well as the development and application of new materials, opened up a great number of forms which often recalled classicism or the Romanesque. An amazing journey into the mindset of the late Industrial Revolution.

SNOEHETTA AS (ed.) Snoehetta Works

Snoehetta is a leading team of architects in Norway with offices in Oslo and New York. This first-ever publication to document their work presents and illustrates the most important current and completed projects of these architects, who have been active internationally for fifteen years, and contains texts by various authors. Projects include the Library of Alexandria (2002), the New Opera House in Oslo (2008), and the Gateway Project in Ras Al-Khaimah, Dubai. Snoehetta’s works and projects revolve around a collaboration and interchange between various disciplines. The architects attach great importance to connecting architecture with landscape architecture and interior design. In each of their projects, fundamental aspects of site, landscape, and context are freshly observed and discussed, which enables them to discover and develop a constant stream of new and varied solutions. As part of their effort to interweave multiple disciplines, the architects of Snoehetta always involve locally and internationally well-known artists in their important projects. For Snoehetta, working together with artists from the early conceptual phase of a project onward constitutes an important factor for later stages of the process.

DAN, O. S. & IGOE, T Physical computing: sensing and controlling the physical world with computers

Physical computing is all around us-from interactive displays at museums to "puff sensors" that aid the physically challenged. With a multiple book buying audience, this book doesn't require a specific background or technical experience. It is designed to help make a more interesting connection between the physical world and the computer world. The audience size is comparable to that of the Robot builder market. In addition to this audience, physical computing is also taught at several universities across the US. This book is a great source of information and knowledge for anyone interested in bridging the gap between the physical and the virtual.

Drawing by hand is making a big comeback. Tired of ubiquitous slick computer renderings that look the same the world over, architects are rediscovering the importance of this very basic, immediate medium: seeing the world and recasting it through their imagination and visual and manual skill. The resurgence of drawing is not merely a retrograde trend, but an affirmation of the continued importance of sketching as part of the design process. Architects' Sketchbooks is the first survey to present pages from the private sketchbooks of a wide international spectrum of architects, who use drawing to express their spatial ideas while revealing their unique thought processes. Sketches from some 85 architects and studios are featured, including Will Alsop, Architects Atelier Ryo Abe, Shigeru Ban, Elemental, Thom Faulders, Norman Foster, Carlos Jiménez, Alessandro Mendini and Office dA. Their works range from simple line drawings and clear perspectives to more abstract, artistic compositions, from quick freehand to measured mapping, from spontaneous squiggles on scrap paper to careful drawings on art paper. Accompanying texts by editor Will Jones include comments by the architects and profile how they use sketches to help evolve their initial inspirations and concepts into more developed ideas, revealing the artistry behind the built world.
