Coming in 2014 – Cultural and Tourism Center at Great River Landing

In 2014, the new Great River Landing will become the gateway for exploring the Mississippi River region,

connecting you with the Mississippi River’s past and present. This new waterfront project will be home to the Great

River Cultural and Tourism Center, where you can embark on a journey through the archaeological, cultural and

natural history of the Upper Mississippi River. The center will house a number of Native American artifacts dating

back more than 12,000 years.

The Great River Cultural and Tourism Center will provide travelers with easy access to many river-edge attractions,

including the Great River State Trail, the 122-acre Wittenberg Marsh and the Mississippi River’s finest scenery.

Future developments at the center will include a number of interactive and multi-media exhibits.

Great River Landing’s location on the Great River Road National Scenic Byway makes it the perfect starting point

for all your explorations of the Mississippi River and the region. For more information on the Great River Landing

project, visit greatriverlanding.com.

The scenic hills and fertile valleys of Onalaska

were home to Native American tribes for countless

centuries. During the 1800s, Onalaska was a

booming lumber town. Logs from northern Wisconsin

and Minnesota came down the Mississippi River to

be processed in Onalaska’s lumber mills. Onalaska’s

European founders, Thomas G. Rowe and John C.

Laird, took the name for the community from a poem

written by Thomas Campbell entitled “The Pleasures

of Hope.” William Carlisle settled in Onalaska

and loved it so much that he founded Onalaska,

Washington, and Onalaska, Texas.

The Onalaska Public Library is home to the Onalaska

Historical Museum. See exhibits that focus on

the area’s history from the Ice Age to modern

times. Artifacts include ancient bones, tools,

weapons and pottery. Other exhibits focus on the

area’s early settlers, the lumber industry of the

1800s and railroad history. For more information

on these historic exhibits and viewing hours, visit

Onalaska Travel Journal

Who: Family of four—Mom, Dad and two girls, ages 6 and 10

From: Milwaukee, WI

What: Three-day Onalaska Getaway

When: October 2011

We chose Onalaska because of the

combination of things to do outdoors and

the family-friendly hotels. Plus, it’s on the

Mississippi River. We’ve wanted to explore that

area of Wisconsin for a long time.

One of the biggest surprises of the trip was Greens Coulee Park. At the suggestion of the staff at

the Visitor Center, we went up there for a picnic. The views were absolutely incredible.

We like the outdoors, but having all the stores and places to eat is re

ally what made the

trip relaxing. We spent one afternoon just shopping and swimming in the pool at the hotel.

We saw a movie that night. That’s what a vacation is for us—easy and laid back.

The last day, we took a drive into La Crosse to take a Wildlife Cruise aboard the

Mississippi Explorer riverboat. We’d heard a lot of good things about it and it was really a

great experience. But before we left Onalaska, we stopped and had our pictures taken with

Sunny the Sunfish. It’ll probably go on our Christmas card this year.

The Great River State Trail was a real highlight of the trip for us. We starte

d in downtown Onalaska and rode

for about five miles north along the trail and then back aga

in. We stopped a few times—once for pictures,

another time to fix our youngest’s bike seat (she rides her own bike, none of that tag-a-long stuff for her)—

and then for snacks. It’s a sm

ooth trail that was easy for everyone. We do a lot of bicycling, so we are pretty

familiar with how far we can ride with the girls. We all decided it was the family’s fav

orite trail.

We took an afternoon drive up the Great River Road. On the way back, we stopped to

see and walk along the McGilvray B

ridges just north of Onalaska. The girls lo

ved it. It’s probably

one of the prettiest places we’ve been in Wisconsin. Then we headed away from the river into

the hills and drove along a road called the Mindoro Cut, which is probably the curviest road

in the state and, of course, the girls loved that too. We were past the peak of fall co

lor, but

it was still absolutely gorgeous.

th WetripW

TM

If you’re a family looking to get out of town for a few days, you should try Onalaska. It was perfect for our family and it was much more affordable than a lot of other places we might have gone. We couldn’t have had a more fun and relaxing trip.

BicyclingMississippi River bluffs, rolling hills and sprawling

wetlands await bicyclists in Onalaska. The Great

River State Trail and La Crosse River State Trail run

through Onalaska and connect riders with the Elroy-

Sparta Trail and the “400” Trail. The trails are part

of a line of 101 miles of continuous state bicycle

trails. The country roads surrounding Onalaska also

provide bicyclists with excellent riding opportunities.

Great River State Trail Pedal along the Mississippi River on the 24-mile

Great River State Trail. The crushed limestone trail

is perfect for any type of bicycle. You’ll traverse 18

different waterways, cross over the Black River on

a 287-foot former railroad trestle and follow Lake

Onalaska and the BNSF railway. Ride all the way to

Trempealeau or continue to the Upper Mississippi

National Wildlife Refuge.

La Crosse River State TrailThe La Crosse River State Trail follows the

winding course of the La Crosse River for 21.5

miles. Bike from Onalaska to Sparta over crystal

clear trout streams and picturesque farms. The

smooth surface can accommodate both road and

mountain bikes.

Canoeing and KayakingPaddle the beautiful waters of Onalaska. Bring your

canoe or kayak to Onalaska and enjoy federally

protected wilderness areas, abundant wetlands

and numerous launching points. Onalaska sits at

the confluence of the Black River, Mississippi River

and 7,700-acre Lake Onalaska. Paddling is the best

way to access some of Onalaska’s most beautiful

backwaters and natural areas. For the location of

boat landings and other access points for paddlers,

see the area map on page 16.

BirdwatchingOnalaska is located on

the Mississippi River

Flyway, North America’s

most important migratory

route. Each spring and fall,

visitors to Onalaska can

see tundra swans, diving

ducks, mergansers and

cormorants, as well as

white pelicans, shorebirds,

raptors and songbirds. Bald eagle viewing is

outstanding in the winter. A wildlife viewing area

located just down from the Onalaska Spillway on

the Black River provides views of two active eagle

nests. During the fall, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife

Service reports on the number of birds present on

the Mississippi River. For bird counts on Onalaska’s

Pools 7 and 8, visit www.fws.gov/midwest/

UpperMississippiRiver.

McGilvray Bridges – Van Loon Wildlife AreaJust north of Onalaska near the community of Holmen,

you will find the Van Loon Wildlife Area, home of the

McGilvray Bridges. These seven historic bridges can

be viewed on a scenic walking trail. To access the

bridges, travel north from Holmen on Highway 53. Turn

left on Old 93, then take a right on Amsterdam Prairie

Road, continuing to the parking area.

FishingLake Onalaska’s big bluegill and pumpkinseed

have earned it the title, “Sunfish Capital of the

World.” But Lake Onalaska offers great fishing for

catfish, walleye, bass and northern pike as well.

Easy access for anglers and hunters can be found

at numerous public boat launches, including the

Onalaska Spillway on the Black River. For maps of

Onalaska’s Pools 7 and 8, visit fws.gov/midwest/

UpperMississippiRiver/huntandfish.html.
