LBGHS Monthly Meeting
October 5, 2013
San Antonio Main Public Library9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
SPEAKER: L. Alan Duaine
TOPIC: His Father's Book: With All Arms
L. Alan Duaine, eldest son of Carl Duaine and a former Air Force fighter pilot and airline pilot, acted upon theepeated suggestion of a second edition of his fathers lifetime work, With All Arms, and stumbled into one of
more fulfilling adventures of an adventurous life. An aspiring writer himself, the younger Duaine found the nwo years an exhilarating ride through the pages of the book. In the process of editing and revising for cla
digging up new photographs and illustrations, and vastly expanding the index, Duaine at last came to fppreciate the miracle that old man Duaine had achieved in the original. The son remains satisfied that econd edition, begun as filial duty, has, in fact, been one of the better privileges of his life. Duaine lives in Cor
Christi and Paris, France. He has three children and four grandchildren.

October will be an excitingtime for Tejano genealogists. We
will meet at the 34th Annual TexasHispanic Genealogical and Histo-
rical Conference in Victoria, Texas
to discuss and present the re-search that many of us have done
during this past year. We willshare the knowledge we gained
and set goals and themes to
research in the coming year. Atthe State Conference, you will
have an opportunity to displayyour family tree for others to see,
to ask questions, and to find
family.
Another highlight for themonth is Founders Day, whichwill occur on the grounds of the
lamo on Saturday, October 26.
Los Bexareos will have space forthree tables: one to show who we
are and the other two for some ofyou to showcase your family
history. I would like for some of
you to dress the part of FranciscoRuiz, Blas Herrera, Juan Seguin
and many others. If you wouldlike to make a presentation, you
may do so by preparing a story
about your family or someone inyour family. Perhaps you have a
father that served at Pearl Harbor a family member that may ha
been saved from a firing squduring the Mexican Revolution
someone with the same last nam
etc. Many of us have interesti
stories of various family memband their stories need to be toRemember, if you can dress up
period attire to represent th
that would be great.
I hope to see all of you
our monthly meeting on Octob5th and then the following week
Victoria.

Websites That Tell Our
Stories
There is more to genealogy than just gatheringnames of ancestors. Yes, it is important to do the
basics, like pedigree charts, names, dates, places, family work sheets, etc. But, let us not forget thatthere are stories that go with these names. There arehistories in the places and times they lived.Photographs and stories bring our ancestors to life. Here we intend to transport you to websites that tellour stories.

The emphasis is on, but not limited to, Hispanic lineages. Their entries will be judged on how much o
pedigree chart they were able to complete and the content of their essay.THERE WILL BE TWO ANNUAL WINNERS. Each year two winners will be selected. One female student and one m
student. They will each win a $500.00 scholarship, which will be submitted directly to the college or university they

HISPANIC SURNAMEORIGINS,MEANINGS, AND SIGNIFICANTPERSONS
ByMara Tovares-AshmanskasFor Los Bexareos Genealogical and Historical Society
Surnames did not exist prior to the twelfth century.
Surnames began to develop in an attempt to distinguish theuan who was the son of Rodrigo from Juan who was the son
of Hernando. The surname was derived either from the givenname of the father, example: Juan the son of Hernando, became
uan Hernndez; Juan the son of Rodrigo became JuanRodrguez, and Juan the son of Gonzalo became Juan Gonzlesor Gonzlez. The origin of this surname was the patronymic
the given name of the father). A surname could also bedevised from a mothers given name, and this would bereferred to as a matronymic (the given name of the mother).
A surname could be derived from a place of originhabitational or geographical origin); it could have its basis
from an occupation (occupational) such as Herrera ironsmithy; it could be a descriptive name (Moreno someone
with dark hair and dark complexion); a nickname (Romero nickname for pilgrim to Rome);
By the sixteenth century it was commonplace to have a
family surname apellido.

prominent in Mxico and in the southwestern United States asa result of the exploration and settlement of Nueva Espaa inhe early 16th century.

I have to blame this straining project on my wife, Irma and herCalifornia cousin, Mary Lu. If they had not started trying to track
own their Carter family history, I would not be searching for myncestors. It was in helping them, that I got hooked into familyesearch.
Looking for ancestors means questioning your siblings andousins, plus anyone who knew your family. Thats easier said thanone when our parents, who would have known the better tidbitsf our past, have passed on. It also means trying to remember con-ersations that took place while we were children and were probablyot meant to hear (try doing that past 55!).
The use of the computer plays heavily on digging up informa-ion that is sitting on a computer server somewhere in this world.
Thanks to internet sites like Ancestry.com and Family Search.org,much information is available if you look in the right section or file. The microfilm at the library is another way to look up information,
s well as old newspapers. A hindrance in some files are the oneshat have not been translated from the hand scribed books written inpanish, which unfortunately I was never taught. There are booksased on the research of others such as the Marriages of Iglesia de
Nuestra Seora del Refugio extracted and translated by FrancesAGUIRRE GMEZ, published by Los Bexareos Genealogical
ociety in 2004.
Not knowing the year of birth or death of someone you knowothing about can be disheartening, but the census listings canhow when they were alive, along with who else was living at thatocation for that year of the census, 1890, 1900, 1910, etc. The United
tates and Mxico both have them. The census will have an agested for each person listed and simple subtraction will give you anpproximate year of birth. The census also lists the neighbors livingext door.
One thing I found to be useful were the Mxico Christening andMarriage database files which are accessible through the previouslymentioned websites. These files usually show who was baptized
nd the parents, and sometimes the grandparents. The marriage filesometimes have the great-grandparents. Not all records from
Mxico have been converted into English; they are on film inpanish cursive script, i.e., handwritten.
My family search started with the death certificate of my father, rnest G. AGUIRRE, which listed his parents as RomnAGUIRRE
nd AdelaGARZA. They both died when my father, his sister, andis brother were not yet in school.
My search quickly took a jump across the US/Mexican border.t seems that my grandfather, Romn AGUIRRE, came across in906 (Border Crossings) and married Adela GARZA in 1907. He
was working as a bricklayer, as did at least one of his brothers. Hisamily came from the state of Nuevo Len, Mxico, but he was bornn Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mxico on 9 August 1886.
That might look as if it was easy, but it was not. Part of theearch was waylaid, so to speak, by the misspelling of names; and inne case, by the reversal of first and last names in the census.
! The 1910 census listing showed that Romn and his sister living in the same household. This tidbit led me to his parentverifying the names of their parents in the Mxico baptism recThrough this process, I found that he had fifteen siblings. I found two more siblings. RufinoAGUIRRE and Cenobia AYhad a total of seventeen children. At this point, it is unknown wor where Cenobia was born or diedonly that she was a mothevery large family. What is known from the records are the paand grandparents of Cenobia, even though dates are incomplete
! The Aguirre side of the family resided mostly in the staNuevo Len, Mxico. RufinoAGUIRRE and his family moved Monterrey, Nuevo Len between 9 March 1868 and 11 Decem1869 to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipasthen to Lampazos de NarNuevo Len between December 1869 and 18 September 1871
back to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas between 3 September 1876 anJanuary 1880. Remember that the border of Mxico and the UStates was not as it is today. People and products moved backforth as needed. The Border Crossing records for Texas start in and even those are sparse of information.
! My research took a detour when I decided to look for RoAGUIRREs siblings in an effort to find out what or where theydone with their lives. Did they stay in Mxico or did they cros
border to better things in life? The border crossing files westarting point, but the Texas death files listed only a few. One sMara de la AscencinAGUIRRE, died in 1953. There is a p
bility that some of the siblings, for whatever reason, used Ayatheir last name!
Ernest G. AGUIRRE
! My father, Ernest G. AGUIRRE, was born on 25 December He lost both parents at an early age. Helped by relatives fromsides he managed to get educated to the seventh or eighth ggetting his GED later on in life. He married RebeccaMUO29 June 1938. Ernest served in the U.S. Navy during WWIImade it back in one piece. He worked at several jobs after theincluding the butcher trade at a Red & White Grocery storCincinnati Street. Eventually he was hired in the U.S. Postal SerHe worked at the main post office near the lamo. Ernest stusing the middle initial G after having name problems another Ernest (Red) Aguirre.
RebeccaMUOZ
! My mother, RebeccaMUOZ, was born on 5 April 1915 toMUOZ and Felicitas SAENZ DE VSQUEZ. The informabout this side of the family is not as thorough as I had hoRebeccas siblings include Santiago (Jimmie), Janie, and Charlesalso had a half-sister, Carmen, who married Reyes NJERA.
! There is hope that further research will lead to more tidbiknowledge, such as the fact that my great-grandfather, MaSAENZ, was a watchmaker and is buried at the San Jos Burial cemetery, where Juan and Felicitas are also interred.

My grandfather, RomnAGUIRRE, was born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mxico on 9 August 1886. He was baptized at SagMetropolitano, Monterrey, Nuevo Len, Mxico. He emigrated to San Antonio, Texas in 1906. Romn met and married Adela Garz

Their first child, a female, was born premature; she died on 26 May 1908. RomnAGUIRRE and Adela GARZA had three hildren: Stella (b. 1909), Ernest (b. Abt. 1911), and Daniel (b. Abt. 1913). The 1910 U.S. Census listed Romns sister, AgapitaAGUIving with thempossibly to help Adela with the children.
The 1920 U.S. Census shows that the three children were living with their uncle, VicenteAGUIRRE, and his family. Romn die
7 December 1912, supposedly as a result of injuries from a fall from the Wolf & Marx building (now the Rand building in San AntTexas). Adela died on 19 February 1915 from a prolonged bout with pneumonia, leaving the children orphans.
The 1930 U.S. Census indicates that Ernest (20) and Daniel (18) were living with their uncle JosAugustine AGUIRRE (54) and his Refugia (50). Stella was found in the 1930 U.S. Census living with other relatives.
Adela GARZA Aguirre
My grandmother, Adela GARZA, was born in Texas on 19 November 1890. She was the first child ofAmadorGARZA and MicCHVEZ, who were married on 28 July 1890. Adela had a younger sister, MargueriteGARZA, who married Manuel CADENA. Ma

Adela had an older half-sister, CatharinaHENRY, from her mother s (Michaila) first marriage to NathanielHENRY.
uan MUOZ
My grandfather, Juan MUOZ, was born on 24 June 1884 in Laredo, Texas to Rafael MUOZ and Jesusa GUZMN, who were man 5 August 1865. Additional information about his parents eludes me.
Juan worked for the Davenport family for many years. My parents had trouble getting his Social Security pay due to the fire thaurned down the Laredo courthouse with all its records. He married Felicitas SAENZ DE VSQUEZ (a widow) on 19 June 1909.
Felicitas SAENZ DE VSQUEZ
! My grandmother, Felicitas SAENZ DE VQUEZ, was born on 2 November 1887. Shetaught English by German Nuns, causing hspeak with a German accent. Her father, Ma
SAENZ, was baptized on 23 January 1851leame to believe that he was born in late Dece1850 or early January 1851. His death certifincorrectly has his birth as 10 March 1870. Mamarried Marcela TREVIO in the 1870s. had at least two daughters, Eloisa (b. 11 M1880) and Pabla (b. 15 January 1883), bFelicitas was born. Felicitas had a red hair that has carried over to some first and secousins.
I have created several charts, using MicroPowerPoint, showing the Aguirre-Mu
families. I also created a chart showingconnection of my wifes family lines (CaDaniel) merging with my family (Aguirre-Muoz). I dont believe there paper sheet large enough to show it aonce, but Ill look!

Los Bexareos is fortunate to have Dennis Moreno and YolandaPatio. They are always ready to help someone with their research.People are often referred to them, because they need help in start-ing their genealogy, or they've come to that preverbal "brick wall."Sometimes the load becomes heavy with all the requests forassistance, especially now that Los Bexareos is getting moreexposure. Los Bexareos is well known throughout Texas, as well asoutside the United States. An individual was recently referred toLos Bexareos by Ancestry.com. Apparently, they had exhausted alltheir resources. That person is now a member of Los Bexareos.
There are many experienced members in the Society. LosBexareos needs others who will step-up-to-the-plate to offer theirexpertise, their knowledge, and their time to help Dennis andYolanda with the heavy load. Please contact Dennis Moreno orYolanda Patio if you think you can help out. Maybe you haveaccess to a good resource, or you're knowledgeable of a particularregion, or you personally posses information that would be helpfulto others. Whatever your area of expertise may be, just share thatwith Dennis and Yolanda so that they have more resources at theirdisposal.
Dennis and Yolanda man the Resource Center every Saturday, except for the first Saturday of the month. They are a very valuableasset to our organization. Thank you Dennis and Yolanda for allthat you do for Los Bexareos!

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 - October 15. Many socialvents take place during this time to honor and celebrate our Hispanic heritage. In
addition to these events, you will find many shows on television that you may find ofnterest.
In previous issues, I wrote about the TV shows Who Do You Think You Are on TLCand Genealogy Roadshow on PBS showing this fall. Both series have already started. Iecord the shows and watch them when I get time to relax. If you have missed the first fewpisodes, or if they are not showing in your area, you can always watch them online. JustGoogle the name of the shows.
Another series currently showing on TV is Latino Americans on PBS. It is a landmarkix-hour documentary featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos and more than 500
years of history. Here again, if you want to catch-up on missed episodes, just go towww.pbs.org/latino-americans. You can choose to read the articles and listen to thepisodes in Spanish or English.
Another site I recommend is hispanicheritagemonth.gov and www.nps.gov/latino.These sites will offer interesting reading. Scroll down on the National Park Service pageor American Latino Heritage Projects. Click on any article (or all of them) and read up onhe projects undertaken by NPS as part of their commitment in telling the Latino Americantory. Maybe someday Los Bexareos and/or some of our sister Hispanic genealogyocieties will help to contribute our stories to and collaborate with the National Park
Service for future American Latino Heritage Projects.
For the locals or those in the San Antonio viewing area, you can also find Justice forMy People: The Dr. Hctor P. Garca Story on KLRN. Final show is October 6th at 4:30 a.m.Check your listings.
You can also watch 20 episodes of The Children of the Revolution online at http://video.klrn.org/program/children-revolucion/.
Don't forget to share the above information with your family and friends.
See you at the State Conference in Victoria, Texas! I am excited to visit with as manyof you as possible!
