Bold - Event hosted by The University of Akron

One of the unique nicknames in all of inter-collegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decid-ed the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as “Zippy” was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite’s first use of the name “Zippy” came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing “Mascot - ‘Zippy’ - Charles Huettner.” In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

What is a Zip?

For the second time in as many years, then-junior Charlie Bull qualified for the NCAA Regionals in 2013, posting a

second-consecutive top-25 finish.

fIrestone country clubThe North and West Courses at the world-renowned Firestone Country Club serve as the home courses for The University of Ak-ron men’s golf team. The North Course opened in 1969 and has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio’s top-10 courses.

Firestone Country Club, opened for play in 1929, was created by Harvey S. Firestone to serve as a recreational park for employees of the Akron-based Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which he founded. The original links of the South Course were designed by the late Bert Way.

Professional golf first visited the Akron area in 1953, when the Rubber City Open was played at Breathnach Country Club in Cuyahoga Falls. The event moved to Firestone in 1954 as a fully-sanctioned tournament and continued through 1959.

The PGA Championship was awarded to Akron in 1960, and to provide a worthy test, architect Robert Trent Jones was hired to bring the course, which was then a 6,585-yard par-72, up to true championship standards. When Jones was finished adding 50 bunkers and two new ponds, the new card listed 7,189 yards and a par 70.

The success of the PGA Championship in Akron led to a new event, the American Golf Classic, which began in 1961 and was played annually through 1976. The PGA Championship returned to the South Course in 1966 and again in 1975, making Firestone the first club to host this championship three times.

Since 1962, Firestone’s South Course has been the site for the an-nual World Series of Golf, a major event on the PGA Tour. For 14 years, the event brought together the winner of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship for a two-round, 36-hole television competition. In succeeding years, Firestone played host to many other competitions, including the CBS Golf Classic and Big Three Golf.

The World Series of Golf was expanded in 1976 and offered the world of professional golf an international championship in which all the participants had won at least one tournament in the past year. In 1984, NEC Corporation became the event’s title sponsor. The PGA’s World Golf Championships NEC Invitational debuted at Firestone Country Club in August 1999, replacing the World Series of Golf. This tournament is part of a World Golf Championship se-ries, and features the game’s foremost players. Tiger Woods won the 2001 event for the third time in as many years. The course also played host to the 2002 Senior PGA Championship.

In 2001, the West Course was renovated by renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, making Firestone Country Club the finest 54-hole golf facility in the world.

fIrestone country clubhole 9Par 4 – 431 Yards

One of the tougher holes that requires a very accurate drive between two lakes and a very accurate second shot into a narrow green guarded by three green-side bun-kers.

hole 12Par 4 – 452 Yards

Maybe the hardest hole on the entire prop-erty. A very straight drive into the prevail-ing wind on this 452 yard hole will leave a mid to long iron into a deep but very nar-row green guarded by bunkers on the right and a steep hillside on the left.

hole 17Par 3 – 218 Yards

Again, like the other par 3’s club selec-tion and a very accurate shot to this island green is required. The elevation of the tee-ing area and the predominant cross wind makes this hole very difficult.

hole 18Par 5 – 545 Yards

The tee shot is the key to this hole. Bite off as much as you can on this dogleg right and it is a pretty easy birdie. Water pro-tects the right side of the complete hole. The green is guarded by three front side bunkers and water on the right. A great fin-ishing hole.

Indoor PractIce facIlItyThe University of Akron’s indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facility features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system.

In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance.

The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train year round. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team now has an advantage over the nation’s top competition.

In addition to the indoor golf facility, the Stile Athletics Field House features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track.

Additional components of the building include spectator seating for approximately 1,200, a sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas.

In 2006, additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross country teams.

To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment.

This addition to UA athletics enables the women’s golf team and the rest of the University’s intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruiting the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 19 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season and for off-season condition-ing workouts.

the fIrestone InvItatIonalThe University of Akron’s home golf course, Firestone Country Club, plays host to the Zips’ own college tournament, The Firestone Invitational, during the fall season on the North Course.

The teams in the invitational face a stern challenge when they descend on the fabled Firestone Country Club. There’s no doubt it will provide excitement. Firestone has a rich history of testing the world’s best players, which it did for 22 years as the site of the World Series of Golf and now the present home of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational. Quietly situated on the outskirts of Akron, Ohio, Firestone Country Club has the finest 54-holes of golf of any private club in the country.

Established in 1929 by Harvey Firestone and later acquired by ClubCorp in 1981, Firestone Country Club remains a one of a kind golf facility. It is the only course in the world to have held three televised golf events in one calendar year, The American Golf Classic, The CBS Golf Classic, and The World Series of Golf. With its three championship level courses, Firestone Country Club is as unique today as it has ever been.

Schools which participated in the 2012 Firestone Invitational included MAC foes Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio, as well as Davidson, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, Samford, Saint Mary’s (Ca.), USC-Aiken and Wisconsin.

Heavy frost delayed the event, reducing the tournament to just two rounds. The Zips finished in fourth place with a score of 584 (+8) at the par-72, 7,060-yard world renowned Firestone Country Club North Course. The Zips opened the event with a round of 290 before closing play with a 294.

Individually, then-freshman Ryan Harris led Akron after carding rounds of 70 and 72 (142, -2) to finish in a tie for fifth place as the only Zip at or under par. Charlie Bull joined Harris in the top-15, closing play with a score of 145 (+1), good for a tie for 12th place.

Ball State took home the team title with a 36-hole score of 7-under 569. On the individual side, Maryland’s Sean Bosdosh came from one-shot back to win individual medalist honors with a two-round tally of 5-under 139.

the mId-amerIcan conferenceProviding leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 67th year of service to the student-athlete.

Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only ten football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in March of 2009.

The league has grown its commitment to championships by expand-ing to seven its number of neutral site post season events – football (Ford Field, Detroit), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland), softball (Firestone Stadium, Akron) and baseball (All Pro Freight Stadium, Avon, Ohio). In addition, the SPIRE facility will also serve as the site for the 2014 women’s swimming & diving championship and 2015 men’s swimming & diving championship.

In 2012, the MAC set a conference record with seven teams receiving a bowl invitation, including the first ever BCS Bowl invitation with North-ern Illinois playing in the Discover Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, following a thrilling 44-37 double overtime win over Kent State in the 2012 Mara-thon MAC Football Championship game. The seven MAC programs that were extended bowl invitations included: Toledo (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl); Ball State (Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg); Central Michigan (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl); Bowling Green (Military Bowl); Ohio (Advocare V100 Independence Bowl); Northern Illinois (Discover Orange Bowl) and Kent State (GoDaddy.com Bowl).

The 2012 season witnessed four football programs ranked in the top 25 of national polls – Northern Illinois, Kent State, Toledo and Ohio—as the BCS Standings had two MAC programs in the Top 25 at the end of the regular season with No. 15 Northern Illinois and No. 25 Kent State. The MAC also set a conference record for the most wins against FBS op-ponents with 16 victories. MAC programs were 4-4 against the Big East Conference, including wins over Rutgers, Cincinnati, UConn and South Florida, and three wins against opponents from the Big Ten Conference, including wins over Penn State, Iowa and Indiana. The dramatic 2012 football season was capped as Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher was selected as the first overall selection by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2013 NFL Draft, becoming the first football player from the MAC with such an honor.

In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the fifth year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most exten-sive in the 67-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Foot-ball Championship Game and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games.

In men’s basketball, the MAC witnessed Akron reach the FirstEnergy MAC Men’s Basketball Tournament for the seventh consecutive season, as the Zips won their third title in five years. Also, Ohio University earned an invitation to the NIT, while Western Michigan reached the College Basketball Invitational Final Four after wins over North Dakota State and Wyoming. Kent State received an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and defeated Fairfield in the opening round. Akron center Zeke Marshall and Ohio point guard D.J. Cooper were selected to play in the 2013 Reese’s Division I College All-Star Game, as Cooper gar-nered MVP game honors.

From two-time Super Bowl quarterback winning Ben Roethlisberger (Mi-

ami University), NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State Univer-sity), four NFL Pro Bowlers (OT Joe Staley, KR Josh Cribbs, TE Antonio Gates, LB James Harrison), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburgh (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics.

hIstory of the macBased in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Co-lumbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, UMass for football only beginning in 2012.

In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swim-ming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wres-tling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

mId-amerIcan conference commIs-sIonerdr. Jon a. steinbrecher

Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher enters his fifth year with the Mid-American Conference (MAC) af-ter being named the league’s eighth commis-sioner on March 16, 2009.

Steinbrecher has expanded bowl opportuni-ties for the conference and stabilized con-ference membership in football, increased national and regional television exposure,

launched the conference’s first-ever digital network, renegotiated the conference marketing rights agreement with IMG College and en-hanced neutral site conference championships in basketball, volleyball and baseball.

Steinbrecher played an integral role in the development of the new Col-lege Football Playoff and serves on the BCS Administrative Committee. Steinbrecher secured a one-year contract extension of the ESPN syndi-cated package, and developed and implemented a new MAC Coaches Orientation program. He has secured the MAC bid to host the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena and the 2014 NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship.

Steinbrecher directed a strategic planning process for the MAC, in-creased national exposure for the conference, as well as new opportuni-ties for the conference in the areas of a new regional television network deal, marketing and sponsorships and securing long-term partnerships for MAC neutral site championship events.

In the summer of 2010, the MAC entered into a three-year regional tele-vision deal with SportsTime Ohio to expand its television coverage in football and men’s and women’s basketball. This provides the MAC a regional television presence for programming throughout the year, and increases promotion and marketing opportunities for the conference.

He joined the MAC after serving six years as commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Prior to the OVC, Steinbrecher served as com-missioner of the Mid-Continent Conference (the Summit League). He is the only person to serve as commissioner in all three NCAA Division I Subdivisions (FBS, FCS, DI).

the Pnc waGon wheel challenGeOn Aug. 24, 2011, the athletics departments at The University of Ak-ron and Kent State University today announced participation in a new competition called “The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge,” which further expands an intercollegiate athletics rivalry dating back more than a half-century between the two schools.

The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge is based on a time-honored competi-tion for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Start-ing with the 2011-12 academic year, the PNC-sponsored rivalry broaden the competition to include 15 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings.

Fans can learn more about the rivalry and follow the results and stand-ings via www.PNCWagonWheelChallenge.com.

“PNC’s new athletic challenge will spark more excitement in a broad range of sports between these rival schools,” said Kevin O. Thompson, PNC regional president for Akron, Canton and Wooster. “By showcasing the talents of student-athletes, we will further engage alumni and the community to support our schools.”

In keeping with tradition, the annual winner of the football contest will gain possession of the historic wooden Wagon Wheel trophy, while the school that accumulates the most total points in all varsity matchups for that academic year will receive an overall series trophy.

“The Akron-Kent State rivalry is a regional event and this partnership will help expand it to more sports and likewise more fans,” Akron direc-tor of athletics Tom Wistrcill said. “We’re excited to have PNC serve as sponsor of what is one of the more unique rivalries in college athletics. As members of the Mid-American Conference, the results of our compe-titions against one another are already very important, but the Wagon Wheel Challenge will increase the level of bragging rights around the community.”

According to legend, the “Wagon Wheel” trophy traces its beginnings to the spring of 1870 when Akron industrialist John R. Buchtel set out for the town of Kent in search of a site to establish a college. In the muddy Ohio fields, however, his wagon became bogged down in the area where Kent State University is currently located. When horses pulled the wagon, a wheel came loose and became buried until it was discovered in 1902 during the construction of a pipeline along the Western Reserve Trail.

The wheel eventually fell into the possession of Dr. Raymond Manches-ter, who as the Kent State Dean of Men in 1945, suggested the local his-toric artifact be offered as the trophy to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game.

“College athletics is built on strong rivalries, and we’re fortunate to have one of the closest in the country with Akron,” Kent State director of ath-letics Joel Nielsen said. “We’re very appreciative of PNC’s support of the Wagon Wheel Challenge – this model has worked very well with other schools and it can only help grow this rivalry and make it even stronger.”

IMG College, the sponsorship and multi-media rights holder for both Akron and Kent State athletics negotiated the PNC Wagon Wheel Chal-lenge.

PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge - Rules and qualifying Sports• Each of the fifteen (15) sports will be worth one (1) point. For a school

to be the winner of The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, it must accumu-late at least eight (8) points.

• The point is awarded to the team that wins the season series in the head-to-head competition.

• If the teams play head-to-head once in a given season (e.g. football), then the school that wins will receive the point.

• All regular season games count toward the season series tally (in-cluding if non-conference games are played) with the school that wins more games (e.g., winning two of three in softball) receiving the point. If teams split the regular season matchups (e.g., in basketball), then each team receives a one-half (½) point for that sport.

• For men’s and women’s cross country, golf and indoor/outdoor track and field, one point is awarded to whichever school finishes higher in the MAC Championship for each of those sports. (For these sports, no other competitions – in-season or post-season – will count toward the series).

• MAC and/or NCAA Tournament games can count toward deter-mining the season series winner (e.g., the schools split the two regular season meetings in basketball and then meet in the MAC Tournament, whichever school wins that game is awarded the point).

• In the event of a 15-sports season tie, the school that won the trophy the previous year will retain possession.

Head coach David Trainor continues to build the Zips towards success as he enters his third season at the helm of the Akron men’s golf program.

In his first two seasons leading the Zips, Trainor has helped the program reach new heights. In each of the past two campaigns, he has guided Charlie Bull to two NCAA Regional appearances and two PING All-Re-gion selections. Bull is the first player to achieve both benchmarks since the Zips moved to Division I competition in 1980. Bull finished in the top-25 in both regional events, in addition to winning his first collegiate event during the 2012-13 campaign.

Trainor’s second season as head coach saw the Zips place inside the top-10 in seven of 11 events, including a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships. UA had 16 individual top-25 fin-ishes, led by Bull’s one win and 10 top-25 efforts. Akron earned its fifth-straight Golf Coaches Association of the America (GCAA) All-Academic Team honor. Senior Cameron Simmons earned Academic All-MAC hon-ors while Bull earned his second-consecutive First-Team All-MAC des-ignation.

As a team, the Zips finished the 2011-12 slate in the top-10 in 10 of 12 events after posting an overall scoring average of 75.48. The Zips were the only MAC squad named an All-Academic Team by the GCAA and saw Scott Landreth and Simmons selected as 2012 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, also by the GCAA.

Trainor was named the 19th head coach of the Zips men’s golf program on June 13, 2011.

Trainor, spent the previous seven seasons on the University of Kentucky staff, including two as the associate head coach and five as an assistant coach.

In his seven seasons at UK, Trainor helped the Wildcats to two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship (seventh – 2005; fifth – 2006), the 2005 Southeastern Conference Championship and nine overall tour-nament titles. Additionally, he helped student-athletes earn three All-American honors and three Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, as well as five All-SEC and 20 Academic All-SEC honors.

Trainor, a native of Berwyn, Pa., was a four-year varsity letterwinner at the College of Charleston, where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in business administration. While at Charleston, Trainor received the Coaches Award in 1997 for his leadership and dedication to the men’s golf team. He was also a three-time Club Champion at Aronimink Golf Club, which is ranked in the Top-100 courses by Golf Digest.
