Under fifth-year head coachJoe Callero, Cal Poly hasestablished itself as both a

Big West Conference championshipcontender and as one of the topdefensive programs in NCAADivision I basketball. During the2012-13 season alone, theMustangs set program records forBig West victories (12) and Big Westwinning percentage (.667) while CalPoly’s 18 overall wins ranked as thesecond-highest total in 19 Division Iseasons. Cal Poly finished 13-1inside the Mott Athletics Center lastseason to also set Division I programrecords for home victories, fewesthome losses and home winning per-centage (.929). A Big WestTournament semifinalist for the sec-ond successive season, the 2012-13 Mustangs played the program’sfirst postseason game in 27 years(CollegeInsider.com Tournament),produced the program’s first winagainst a ranked opponent with a70-68 triumph at No. 11 UCLA and, among 345 NCAA Division I pro-grams, finished second in fewestturnovers per game (9.4) and fourthin assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46-to-1).

Overall under Callero, Cal Polyhas matched or exceeded its wintotal from the previous season eachyear – a four-year stretch not expe-rienced at Cal Poly for 41 years. The

Mustangs have also exceeded ormatched their predicted Big Westpreseason poll ranking each yearunder Callero. Only one Big Westprogram – three-time defending reg-ular season champion Long BeachState – owns a better conferencerecord during the previous threeseasons than Cal Poly.

With a reputation for refining tal-ent, Callero – who coached NBAchampion Brian Scalabrine at USC(1998-99) – has produced five pro-fessional players during four previ-ous seasons at Cal Poly. Mostrecently, former Mustang pointguard Amaurys Fermin was named2013 Rookie of the Year in theDominican Republic nationalleague.

In support of Cal Poly’s talent, winning ways and nationally recog-nized style of play, the Mustang pro-gram has experienced a 31.4 per-cent increase in attendancebetween the 2008-09 campaign (thefinal season prior to Callero’s arrival)and last season’s average of 2,066fans per home contest. UnderCallero, Cal Poly is 36-16 inside theMott Athletics Center, 25-9 versusBig West opponents at home andenters the 2013-14 season havingwon 14 straight conference homegames.

Cal Poly finished the 2011-12season ranked among Division Ibasketball’s top-25 defensive pro-grams for a second successiveyear. Along the way, Cal Poly pro-duced an 18-win season, reachedthe Big West Tournament semifinalsfor the first time in five years and, during a 100-54 victory against Cal

State Northridge, the Mustangssank their first 11 three-pointattempts to match a 25-year-oldNCAA record.

Selected to finish fifth in the BigWest standings during the 2010-11season, Cal Poly instead matchedsingle-season program records forhighest showing in the Big West(second) and highest seeding forthe conference tournament (sec-ond). The Mustangs also cementedtheir status as a defensive power-house by finishing third amongNCAA Division I programs in oppo-nent three-point percentage andsixth in opponent points per game.

Callero’s initial 2009-10 seasonat Cal Poly yielded one of the topsingle-year turnarounds in programhistory. In orchestrating a five-winimprovement from the previousyear, Callero also directed theMustangs to their best start to anyBig West season (5-2). Predicted tofinish last in the standings, Cal Polyclinched the No. 6 seed for the BigWest Tournament and capped theyear by winning the program’s firstconference tournament game inthree seasons.

Individually, Cal Poly has pro-duced seven All-Big West selectionsunder Callero, including all-confer-ence first team awards for LorenzoKeeler (2009-10), Shawn Lewis(2010-11) and Chris Eversley(2012-13). Additionally, guard KyleOdister was selected to the BigWest All-Freshmen Team for the2009-10 season while Maliik Loveearned Big West Freshman of theYear praise for the 2010-11 season.
