Ubuntu Education Fund 2013 Annual Report— 1 5 Y E A R A N N I V E R S A R Y

After 4 years, 86% of Ubuntu’s clients are on track toward stable

health and stable income. The handcrafted titles in each photograph reflect the link between

our children’s narratives, staff members' work, and quantifiable impact. Each word was physically made and placed in the

photograph. They highlight the real and immediate connection that the community has with Ubuntu.

Page 3: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

We met in a Port Elizabeth tavern just four years after Nelson Mandela assumed the presidency. We sat for hours as we discovered that we shared much more than a passion for soccer. For the next six months, we lived together and worked side by side in Banks’s school. We watched as non-profits flooded in. We saw excited children receive new computers that teachers would then lock away, organizations distribute soup to students whose hunger returned when the groups moved on, and countless projects vanish when grant cycles ended. When we founded Ubuntu Education Fund in 1999 with a few hun-dred dollars from a University of Pennsylvania campus raffle, we were determined to be different. We wanted to provide orphaned and vulner-able children with what all children deserve—everything—and to make a long-term commitment to Port Elizabeth’s townships. In the beginning, we were like every other nonprofit, fixated on narrow definitions of success and scale. But over time, we realized that our libraries, computer centers, and community-outreach campaigns were generating impressive outputs rather than positive outcomes. The Ubuntu Model evolved from the lesson we learned: one-time inter-ventions rarely promote lasting change. To transform township children’s lives, we focus on the depth, rather than the breadth, of our impact. We provide cradle-to-career services, ensuring that our children have every-thing that our parents tried to give us. We have built a proven model, marked by South African innovation, that can empower any community to determine its own future. It’s what we’ve done for 15 years, and it’s what we’ll do for another 15.

Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey,

Jacob Lief, Founder and CEO

Malizole Banks Gwaxula, Founder and Senior Advisor

DEAR FRIENDS,

Page 4: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

The Ubuntu Model is a grassroots solution that is

providing global dividends. Our comprehensive approach is moving clients out of poverty and fundamentally

changing the lives of 2,000 children from cradle to career. It encompasses coordi-

nated, life-saving household stability, health, and educational interventions.

Page 6: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

Household instability undermines children’s ability to take advantage of even the most effective educational

and health interventions. In 2013, Ubuntu

conducted 1,741 home assessments, provided 1,792 child protection

services, and offered 1,213 psychosocial services.

4

Page 7: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

In a community marred by apartheid’s crippling legacy, unemployment, poverty, and

social breakdown, we know that a child is the most valuable asset in a home.

Her safety is a return on your investment.

5

Page 8: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

A virus prevented is a lifetime of treatment averted. 100% of

HIV-positive mothers in Ubuntu’s care have given birth to healthy,

HIV-negative babies.

6

Page 9: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

Our medical team has the unique ability to monitor our children’s

well-being at the Ubuntu Clinic, just steps away from our classrooms.

From ultrasounds to immunizations to routine check-ups, Ubuntu provides

life-saving health services. In 2013, we conducted 8,244 clinical services and

5,387 HIV and TB tests, while maintaining a 97% drug adherence rate.

7

Page 10: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

The first 1,000 days of a child’s life determines her future. This year, we

doubled the size of our early childhood development program, which

lays the foundation that our toddlers need to thrive. Over 90% of

our students exceeded standardized developmental milestones.

8

Page 11: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

Ubuntu students are twice as likely to graduate from high school as

their peers. The impact of providing 2,000 children with intensive

academic support changes a community forever. We help students attain

the qualifications they need to realize their potential.

9

Page 12: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

There is a difference between touch-ing a child’s life and fundamentally changing it. We have prepared and supported brave students

as they became some of the first in their families to earn a university degree.

Our first Ubuntu scholars, who started with us 15 years ago, are now earning

gradutate degrees and entering the workforce.

10

Page 13: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

90 graduates from Ubuntu’s job readiness initiative secured

employment and were placed in job training schools. We have a strong network

of corporate partners that recognize Ubuntu as a leader in career

guidance and job readiness training.

11

Page 14: 2013 Annual Report for Ubuntu Education Fund

By investing in the depth rather than the breadth of our impact, Ubuntu has redefined the theory of “going

to scale.” BUILD (the Bertha-Ubuntu Internal Leadership

Development program) is a staff-empowerment initiative that develops sustain-

able leadership, organizational accountability, and increased efficiency.

The Ubuntu Centre is a testament to our long-term commitment to the children of South Africa and our belief that access to world-class healthcare and education is a right, not a privilege. In our pediatric clinic, pharmacy,

technology wing, rooftop garden, theatre, and classrooms, life-changing transformations occur every day.

95% of our staff come from the community we serve. We have spent the past

15 years building an organization that is bigger than the people

who created it. Our investment in local leadership and innovations

in human resources are unparalleled in the development sector.

“15 years ago, Jacob Lief came to me and asked me to help him incorporate Ubuntu Education Fund. I thought

Jake was another young idealist who would lose his passion for Ubuntu within a few years and join the

corporate world. I was wrong. Jake has never lost his passion. I joined the Ubuntu board about three years ago after watching Ubuntu become one of the most impressive and successful social projects that I have ever seen.”

“Ubuntu’s leadership is not afraid to challenge traditional development thinking. We constantly analyze our data, refine our strategies, and continuously improve our model. We run

Ubuntu as efficiently as a private sector business with strict governing structures, strong accountability,

and complete transparency.”

a non-profit organization

that provides world-class

health and educational
