During December, the Drama Studio was taken over by Gangsters, as students from across Years 8 – 11 performed Bugsy Malone. The popular musical was performed over 3 evenings all of which were sold out, as well as a matinee that was attended by some local primary school students.

The cast and crew have worked tirelessly since September to ensure this production was of the finest quality. Spending at least 5 hours every week in rehearsal the hard work really showed as the students displayed a range of talent in acting, singing and dancing.

Accompanied by a home grown band, led by musical director, Mr Moffat, the production received rave reviews from audiences. The department has since been inundated with messages congratulating the students for their hard work and ‘incredible performance’.

Musicals by their nature require a team effort and everyone involved should be very proud of what they achieved, but as with any production there are always stand out performances that have to be mentioned.

For singing, a special mention to Cameron Smith in 8RDC for his amazing vocal performance of ‘Tomorrow’ as well as Megan Thompson-O’Connor in 11BM who is someone to look out for in the future. She stole the show with her emotional performance of ‘Ordinary Fool’.

When it came to acting there was no doubt that the performances of the show were the leads. Ryan Funnell 11BM was outstanding as Fat Sam, demonstrating a fantastic range of performance skills to create a brilliant portrayal. Olly Berridge of 9AOS showed skill beyond his years to lead the cast as Bugsy Malone. Nevermind the X Factor, Olly had the ‘Cool Factor’ as he accurately portrayed the loveable qualities of the popular gangster.

A great effort by everyone involved and a completely unforgettable experience, Bugsy Malone has really outlined the depth of talent amongst UCC students.

Dear parents and Guardians,

Where has the term gone? It really does seem to be only 5 minutes since the half term break.

As always, it has been full of exciting opportunities for our students and staff, which demonstrates the value we place on providing an all-round education for your sons and daughters – in and out of the classroom.

You will recall in the October newsletter we announced the beginning of an exciting new initiative between Uppingham Community College and Catmose College, to jointly open a post 16 Free School for academically able students, in a location close to Uppingham and Oakham with accessible transport routes from our catchment and feeder schools. We are now close to submitting the bid to open the school as we are intending to apply in January and I am very grateful to those of you who responded to my request in the letter sent out a couple of weeks ago to show your support by answering a few questions. This support is crucial to the success of the bid and also for demonstrating the need for this provision for our students. You can still access the questionnaire through this link

www.haringtonschool.com/supportor through the UCC website.

On a much more mundane note, I have become increasingly concerned with the number of students coming in to college with unacceptable piercings or earrings. These are not only against the college dress code but are also a health and safety issue. I am also worried that some of these are being done by the students themselves or by friends, which is very dangerous. Those students who have done this have had a very unfortunate experience as it meant they have had to miss lessons and break and lunchtime until it was sorted out and it is also an expensive mistake. Therefore, to avoid any confusion may I make it clear that anyone arriving at college with an unacceptable piercing or earring – particularly spiked – will now have to remove them immediately.

As all students have access to this newsletter no-one can plead ignorance! Thank you for your support in this.

We send our good wishes to Mrs Hawley at this time as she is leaving us prior to her move to America and also to Mr Hassan who has been with us during Mrs Speers’ maternity leave. Our thanks to both of them.

I hope that you have a very enjoyable Christmas holiday and all good wishes for a happy and healthy 2014.

Yours sincerely,

Jan Turner

Work will be starting on January 6th on the new maths block. There will be some disruption to the car park as there will be construction traffic and activity in that area. This is most likely to affect the post school pick up so I would be grateful if you could delay this until after the buses have gone. Thank you for your support.

IMPORTANTYEAR 11 MAThS

When the Year 11 students return after the Christmas break the maths department will be offering a timetabled programme of revision sessions for both the Foundation and Higher tiers every Friday. These will run from 2pm – 3pm. The timetable will be displayed in all maths classrooms and sessions publicised through the daily notices – please encourage your child to sign up and attend these sessions.

Every week students will be bringing home a past paper to complete in their own time. These papers will be set every Monday and due in the following Monday. It is essential that students complete these to the best of their ability. It is not a weekly test, it is a revision tool and teachers will be encouraging students to revise topic areas in order that they can answer the questions.

Should students fail to hand their papers in, they will stay behind after school on the Wednesday of the week that it is due in to complete it.

ShOW MY hOMEWORk

Just a reminder that all homework that is set for students is available on the Show my Homework online calendar. This shows clearly the due date of the homework and includes details of the task, and may have other resources or links attached.

To find your child’s homework on the Show my Homework online calendar simply follow the steps below:

1. Go to the UCC website.2. Click on the ‘parent Links’ drop

down menu at the top, then select ‘Homework’. This will take you to the Show My Homework Calendar for UCC.

3. You will be able to see all the homework for the current week. You may then filter the results for a year group, or any particular class or teacher.

4. Click on any homework ‘box’ for further details of the task and any attachments.

We have found it to be a very useful additional support to the Homework planner and will help you to help your child keep on top of their workload.

Next term we will be introducing a personalised log-in, so that you and your child can see only relevant homework via a personal calendar and an online ‘to do list’. More information on this exciting development in the New Year!

OPERATIONChRISTMAS ChIlD

By Clara Turner, Sophie JohnSTon, CaTe hyde, ruTh WilliamS and Klara Vizma

On Friday the 14th of November 2013 we sent off sixty-two shoeboxes full of gifts to children in Serbia. These are children who may not get anything else for Christmas. No special food, no special events and no special presents! That’s why we appreciated your help so much when UCC students brought in shoeboxes to help us give more and more to these children. Earlier in the term we did a Cake Sale to raise money towards the cost of sending the boxes, Lots of people helped massively by bringing in donations of cakes or even just buying something yummy so we could send more shoeboxes to Serbia. The boxes sent included lots of little presents. Some

had cuddly toys, sweets and other toys. Others included note books and colouring pens. We also included toothpaste and tooth brushes too as these are very much appreciated, even though we take them for granted.

ROTARY ClUB YOUNG MUSICIANS COMPETITION

18Th January 2014

Next term, we have the Rotary Club Young Musicians Competition being held here at the College. There are six categories in the contest for 11-13 year olds and for 14-17 year olds. The categories are: solo voice, solo instrument, ensemble voice (4-6 people), ensemble instrumental and choir group (6+ people).

If you wish to enter, you need to be able to perform two pieces of music lasting no more than 6 minutes for 11-13 year olds and 8 minutes for 13 to 17 year olds.

Entry forms can either be obtained from Mr Moffat or on line from...

www.Rotary1070.org

...under youth competitions. It would be lovely to see a large number of our students signing up for this contest, but entries have to be in by the 10th of January.

Page 5: 2013 December Newsletter

ChRISTMAS ACTIvITIES

A busy time has just been had by many of our musicians. By the time you read this, they will have just performed three nights of Bugsy Malone followed by the annual Celebration of Christmas in the parish Church. Huge congratulations to all who have given up so much of their own time.

BAND IN A DAY

In January, we hope to have three members of the Northamptonshire music service in school working with some of our budding rock musicians. One rock group from each year group will be put together and invited to work with these professional musicians for a day. They can then develop the skills they learn by joining in the regular Rockschool, which takes place from 2pm until 3pm each Friday after everyone else has gone home.

lOST PROPERTY

At the end of every term we remind students to take any belongings home or leave items in lockers. We are still finding items left in cloakrooms and other areas of the college every week. We endeavour to keep the college tidy, please encourage students to keep belongings safe and secure in lockers or take home. Lost property will be available at the college shop for students who have misplaced items. Please remember to NAME items.

CUlINARY DElIGhTS!By mrS poST

In September Year 7 students joined a cooking class dubbed ‘Culinary Delights’. Their aim was to create a dish and cook it

in one hour, this often takes a little longer! However they started off cooking biscuits, scones, etc and their chocolate logs show how they have progressed in just a few months. During the last two weeks of term they cooked sausage rolls and Christmas sweets. Next term they will cook more adventurous dishes. At the end of each term we have a competition and all students are very competitive. The results of the chocolate log competition were:

1st Place - GeorGina ayres2nd Place - emily martin

3rd Place - evie KirK KinGston

Well done to you all – you are all winners.

“We go to New College Stamford on a Tuesday and meet up with students from Catmose College for our Animal Care and Motor vehicle courses. I do the Animal Care and really love it. We look after a range of animals, from spiders and guinea

pigs, to the more exotic, like chameleons and bearded dragons! There is also some monkeys and meerkats. It’s great fun and all of us really look forward to our morning at college, we just wish it could be longer. My favourite animal is the bosc monitor.”

Year 7 students explored the differences between the planets in maths lessons. Ruby Hunt, Alice Freeman, Emily Edwards, Maddie Kirby, Joe Kay, Klara vizma and Emily Thorpe made scale drawings of the planets. If we drew a picture of the Sun to the same scale you would need a piece of paper twice as tall as the students!

EXpLORING pLANETSIN THE MATHS DEpARTMENT

As part of the Year 7 Connected Learning Space Topic, students produced pieces of creative writing and poems. The stimulus for the creative writing was the poem ‘Southbound on the Freeway’ by May Swenson. This poem introduced students to the idea that if an Alien landed on earth, what would be the first thing they might see and what might they think? This resulted in some fantastic pieces of work, some of which will be displayed by Mrs Harris in CL1. Year 7 students and their teachers thoroughly enjoyed this topic which allowed students to explore a variety of ideas and to produce some extremely creative responses.

Year 7 students explored space for two weeks from a range of subjects. They looked at many aspects of Space by writing Alien poems in English to making comets in Science. They also

took to exploring the huge scale of the solar system in Maths, making space themed computer games in ICT to being abandoned on an alien world in Drama. There will be another connected Learning project later this year on the theme of “Sports Reporting”.

COMpUTER SpACE INvESTIGATIONIN THE ICT DEpARTMENT

By dylan palmer 7eBYear 7 were entertained enormously by Mrs Green from the National Space Academy and her interesting talk on comets. Mrs Green came into Uppingham Community College to give the Year 7s an exciting talk on comets on Tuesday 19th November 2013. These ‘dirty snowballs’ come from the very outer reaches of the Solar System (the Oort cloud) and when they are disturbed they come whizzing towards the sun. Year 7 first looked at pictures of famous comets including Halley’s comet and showed us Comet ISON, which will be visible in the skies soon! Year 7 also were informed of the super-light astrogel and new mission to land on comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, an exciting happening which will also take place soon! We then watched a clip from the film Deep Impact, which was about a comet hitting Earth and the consequences. The highlight of the day was when a ‘comet’ was made before our very eyes using carbon, washing detergent, water, sand, soy sauce and, most exciting of all, dry ice. This interesting substance is in fact frozen carbon dioxide, a compound which has no liquid form. Dry ice can reach temperatures of -80oC and can burn if touched. Thankfully, nobody got burnt and Year 7 received a jug of water and some dry ice to see the action close up.

what haPPens when dry ice is added to water?

HOW COOL IS SCIENCE? ABOUT -80OC.

In ICT we have been working with the other departments to investigate space using gaming. The students have been programming games using a piece of software called ‘Kodu’ and they learned about the logic of programming as well as space. We started out our investigation by using a new search tool called mymontage.com. It allows students to build an interactive newspaper with information to support their games. It is similar to a mood board. They then used these ideas as a starting point for their game. There was a great amount of planning required and the students linked into their science lessons by using questions which reflected what they had learnt.

Some students did really elaborate games with multiple levels and some students chose to keep things easy for their audience. They included quiz questions in their games which required correct answers in order to progress. Joe Banerjee of 7NH included some really difficult questions about the axis of the sun and include multiple levels for difficulty. This really showed how he had been linking his science knowledge into his ICT lesson. The evidence of testing and fixing errors showed really good problem solving skills. Some of which were industry standard. All in all, our students had a great time doing the project and took a lot from it. We look forward to doing further projects like this.

The Award is changing in college. Up to now we have been able to provide the Award with Rutland County Council’s support. Due to that funding being withdrawn, we have

become a Licenced provider to enable us to continue the delivery of this valuable Award. This does mean that changes have to be made to allow the Award to continue to be delivered in college. There will be a price increase; however, we will endeavour to keep this affordable to all.

The college will continue to operate the scheme and we are very fortunate that all areas can be offered at UCC. The college offers Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards to students and we are able to mentor them once they have moved on to further education.

The Award continues to grow in the college and as a result of this, more volunteers are needed. If anyone is interested in volunteering please contact the college on 01572 823631 and ask for The DofE Manager.

SUMMER SUCCESS FOR DofE

We had a good summer this year with one group completing their Silver Expedition and five groups completing their Bronze Expedition. August also saw us take our first Gold Canoeing Expedition on the River Wye. This was a great experience for all on the water and those following on land. The expedition was made up with year

11 leavers, ex pupils and a direct entry participant. It took the year 11 students 6 months to plan, organise and train for. Mr Jo Evans from the KEMpSTON OUTDOOR CENTRE assessed the final expedition after his team spent many hours training the group on the Great River Ouse in Bedford.

This year in October 2013 we participated in the French Exchange. It was a fantastic experience and we made lots of new friends with the French students. The first trip we went on was to Alton towers this was great because it gave us a chance to get to know our pen pals and go on the different rides. Sunday was a day for getting to know our French student better and was a day spent with the family and other English friends.

Wednesday was a day trip to London. It started with a tour of the main sights of the city. When we got off the bus at Covent Garden we had an hour and a half to look around and go into different shops and had lunch. After lunch we went to the theatre to see Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. It was fantastic.

Thursday night was the social evening. There was food, drinks, singing and dancing. Everyone was having fun and dancing. Finally came Friday, the last day which started with the French Students coming into

some of our lessons and then after break they went off and did some sports with Mr Lewin. Finally at 4 o’clock the French Students got on the bus (a few with tears) to begin their journey home.

We are all really looking forward to going to France next May and we can’t wait to see our French friends again.

The second half of the Spanish Exchange happened when the Spanish students came to England on Wednesday October 30th during half term.

“It was great to see them again after 8 months and to see if anyone had changed.”

On the first day the English students showed the Spanish students around the college, and then most of the group walked down into Uppingham and we gave them a tour of the town.

That night the circus was in town so we took them to see what a circus is like in England.

On the Thursday we all went to Alton Towers which was amazing and then on the Friday we went to London on the train to see the sights and watch Billy Elliott at a Westend theatre.

Over the weekend we all tried to meet up so most of us visited Highcross in Leicester and then took our Spanish friends to a Bonfire Night.

On the Sunday some of us went to Rutland Water or just did whatever we wanted to with our Spanish friends. On the Monday the English students went to

school as normal but the Spanish students went to Cambridge.

On the Tuesday the Spanish students did lessons with the English students and then at night time we all had a goodbye party.

On Wednesday 6th October the final day, the Spanish students had the morning at college doing lessons and then it was time to say goodbye.

“It was sad having to say goodbye but hopefully we’ll see them again in the future. I’m glad I have done the Spanish Exchange as I have made some great friends and memories along the way.”

TRIPS TO LEICESTER TIGERSAND LEICESTER CITY FC

The college ran trips to watch the Leicester Tigers and Leicester City in November. Seventeen students attended the Leicester Tigers v London Irish game in the Aviva Premiership which saw the Tigers win a

hard fought match 20 v 11. The week after, twenty two students were guests at Leicester City and had the full match day experience including being part of the Guard of Honour and Shake the Shirt before the game, as well as being part of the parade at half time. Leicester won 3 v 0 to go to the top of the Championship so fingers crossed next season we’ll be running trips to watch Premiership matches.

ARCHERY TASTER

Twenty students recently attended our Archery Taster session. Wet weather forced the session to go inside but students enjoyed being taught the basics of Archery before taking part in practice and competitions. We have arranged an Archery fixture with Uppingham School in the New Year so will be running more sessions to try and pick a team to represent the college.
