The Chin-up used to be themeasure of a man. MarttiIivonen, a physical trainingteacher living in Espoo, teaches today’s men andwomen how to learn to doChin-ups. Iivonen explainsthe secrets of these exercisesto readers of Bodausmagazine using the IRONGYM training bar as an aid.TEXT: MARTTI IIVONENTrainer and physical training teacher

You may imagine that you can easily do a few chin-ups. But when you first hang on the IRON GYM bar you may discover that you can only pull half way up, or not at all.

On the other hand, there are some people who have not used a chinning bar since their school days but can easily do a few chin-ups. Their chin-up technique has not disappeared.

Move your shoulders! In the modern western life style people spend a

lot of time in bad sitting positions. Their shoulders are pushed forward, their posture gets worse, and that upper shoulder muscle activity drops to near zero IRON GYM offers a way to reactivate upper shoulder muscles through different pulling motions.

The most common pulling motion is the well-known CHIN-UP.

This exercise may be too challenging for many men or women, but it can be learned. In my own training and teaching of physical trainers I have been able to help some “zero” chin-up cases, young and old, men and women, to do a few well executed chin-ups within a couple of weeks. Regular work with the IRON GYM bar makes this possible for all but the most overweight exerciser.

Pulling power!IRON GYM is a multipurpose piece of equip-

ment, which improves pulling power. It enables you to practise pulling exercises with many differ-ent kinds

of hand grips: overhand, underhand, wide, nar-row and mixed grips. With IRON GYM you can do traditional chin-ups, use a hockey stick grip, or a wide underhand grip behind the neck, or even with extra weight. There are many versatile choices and the bar does not have to be installed permanently in the door-way.

Working the abdomen and hipsAside from chin-ups and pull-ups, IRON GYM

works well for many other kinds of exercises.

Chin-ups accordingto pulling powertraining principles

The goal of pulling power training is to develop functional pulling power. IRON GYM is excel-lent equipment for this training. If you are not able to do even one chin-up at first, you can begin the training as follows:1. Train lighter. Stand on a chair to keep your

chin over the bar. Make the eccentric de-scent slowly, counting six seconds: 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106. Constantly ex-ert force against your weight to slow down these eccentric descents. Then return to hang onto the bar standing on a chair, de-scend slowly, and so on.

If you are able to do some chin-ups right away, you can alternate different ways of training:1. Keep changing the grips and the pulling

pattern. For example, pull half way up, stop for three seconds, and then descend slowly down.

2. Descend only half way down, stop for three seconds, and then descend slowly down the rest of the way.

3. You may also do short pulls as quickly as possible. That stimulates the blood circula-tion to the upper shoulder muscles. Do, for example, 3 sets of 3 – 4 repeats.

Shoulder joint functionality depends on orienting training more toward pulling than pushing power because daily rou-tines don’t weaken pushing power the way they weaken pull-ing power.

With IRON GYM, traditional chin-ups can be done in very many different ways. The efficiency and the effect of the motion can be focused, for example, by changing the grip positions of the hands.

Strenghten your shoulder joints!

The weakness of the supporting shoulder blademuscles is behind most shoulder injuries.

For that reason pulling power training is thebest way to train should joint supporting muscles.

IRON GYM™ training device waslaunched in the USA in Autumn 2008.With this training bar you can work yourbiceps, triceps, chest, back, shouldersand abdomen. It’s easy to take alongwhile travelling.

IRON GYM is also good for abdominal training.

Chin-up technique in a nutshellThe more firmly you grip the bar, the more quickly you create muscle tension.

1. Firmly grip the IRON GYM bar before you start the pulling motion.2. Tighten your core and gluteal muscles. Press your feet together.3. Do not hang loosely. Tighten the whole body before starting to pull.4. First, do a little ”tug” to get the pull motion started. Use the arm and backmuscles. Pull in a controlled and smooth way.5. Always keep your body tight during the pulls, both when you are pullingup and letting yourself down.6. Remember: Pulls should be started with arms straight and your chinabove the hand grips.

SIT UPS, the abdomen and hip flexing exercise with your feet restrained by the bar, can be done either with the body held straight or twisted as it is raised and lowered. The motion can involve either lifting the whole upper body, or only the shoulder blades. The exercise can also be done with pauses, where you hold a number of static positions along the way. There are many variations.

Push-ups in many different waysThe traditional PUSH-UP can be done in many different ways with IRON GYM. Alternatives to the normal push-up include using a wide or a narrow grip, or with your elbows slightly touching your ribs. One leg is held straight in the air and the other on the floor. These leg positions are changed with each push-up. It is definitely effective! Also the traditional DIP can be done excellently with IRON GYM, either in a simple extension motion with feet on the floor, or for a greater challenge with your feet on a platform. Or one foot can be kept in the air and the other on the floor changing feet…you can always invent more challenging and varied alternatives.

Pulling power is more important thanpushing powerThe importance of pulling power in overall body training is indisputable. For healthy shoulder joints and good posture, it is best to not overemphasize pushing power. The modern life style weakens the pulling power of the muscles surrounding the shoulder blades. The shoulders of a sitting person push forward and the shoulder blades stick out. Daily routines don’t weaken pushing power in the same way. Improv-ing shoulder joint functionality depends on orienting training more toward pulling than pushing power. In the traditional push training, for example, in the bench press, the engagement of the upper shoulder muscles is zero. Pulling power training is also good for maintaining good posture. Pulling power training increases the effective engagement of the support-ing muscles of the shoulder blades by pulling the shoulders backwards to prevent the shoulder blades from sticking out. The shoulder blades should be close to the backbone and not permitted to stick out.In addition, pulling power is very important for the squeezing power of the hands. Research shows that this correlates with a longer life span.
