2013 FOOD DRIVE

74 MILLION LBS.

IT ALLADDS

UPTake letter carrier excellence, mix it with a generous helping of customer compassion, and you end up with 74.4 million pounds of food collected in the 21st annual NALC National Food Drive on Saturday, May 11.

“It’s another standout year for letter carriers and those we serve,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “This amaz-ing haul will go a long way toward stocking the nearly bare shelves of food pantries and similar charitable organizations all across America.”

The 2013 figure—the second-highest achieved—brings to just under 1.3 billion pounds the total amount of food col-lected and distributed since the national drive began.

“Letter carriers are part of the fabric of America,” Rolando said. “We regularly touch every address in the country six days a week, and we see many of our customers finding themselves struggling to make it from one day to the next.

“Food Drive Day is our chance to really stand out and bring these families a measure of food security,” he added.

Again this year, on the food drive’s traditional second Saturday in May, bags of non-perishable food could be found waiting by mailboxes for pickup in more than 10,000 cities, towns and rural communities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam and the District of Columbia. Postal customers had left them there for their carriers to collect.

be to repeatedly carry heavy sacks of food from mailbox to LLV to dock—on top of managing a normal mail route.

The president also recognized the help provided by thousands of other food drive volunteers—retired letter carriers, family members, friends, co-workers, and other postal workers and

members of other unions—as well as our national partners.

“I know I speak for our entire mem-bership when I extend our thanks and gratitude to them for their valuable help with collections, processing and distribution,” Rolando said.

The total of 74,483,000 pounds collected reflects a notable increase of about 3.5 million pounds over last year’s national total, no doubt helped by mostly favorable weather across the country and by a slowly recover-ing economy. This 5 percent increase over the 2012 total is the sharpest jump in a decade.

The top branch was West Coast Florida Branch 1466, which collected 1,615,744 pounds of donations.

Buffalo-Western New York Branch 3 came in second with 1,494,692 pounds, with Garden Grove, CA Branch 1100 a respectable third, reporting a col-lected total of 1,431,944 pounds. (More results, including a branch-by-branch breakdown, begin on page 20.)

A special day indeedOne consistent message from letter

carriers all across America is that this annual drive gives them a great deal of pride in the work they do.

“I get the satisfaction of knowing that I’m helping people,” a carrier identified only as “Rob” told WXIX-TV in Cincinnati, where the Freestore Foodbank estimated that Branch 43 members had collected enough food to provide more than 70,000 meals.

“It makes the day a little bit harder,” Wilkes-Barre, PA Branch 115 Vice Presi-dent Matthew Slivinski told the Times Leader, “but it’s once a year and for a good cause.”

The local United Way office in Wilkes-Barre estimated that our drive makes up between 25 and 35 percent of the annual contributions to area food banks and pantries.

Food drive ‘frenzy’ in MOConvinced that he could do better on Food

Drive Day this year, St. Charles, MO Branch 984 letter carrier Michael Petrossian sought some new strategies for increasing his haul.

Petrossian worked with a local apartment complex’s manager to place tubs for food collection at each building, and he used its Facebook page to promote the drive. He directly asked his business customers to chip in and help out, prompting some busi-nesses to go a step further by challenging

each other to see which would donate the most food. Petrossian’s extra effort kept Branch 984 Food Drive Coordinator Joe Yochim busy, helping

the determined carrier by filling his orders for posters, signs, postcards and bags. The work paid off. Many of Petrossian’s customers donated food the day before the drive,

filling his LLV to the top. On Saturday, May 11, Yochim had to send volunteers out to unload Petrossian’s truck twice; at the end of the day, the carrier came back to his post office with yet another full truck.

The result? The 18-year carrier wound up breaking a personal record by collecting 2,872 pounds of food, which helped feed more than 2,000 people at five local food pantries.

“When given an opportunity to help, people will if they can,” Petrossian said.

“People are more than generous,” Branch 115 Food Drive Co-Coordinator Jeffrey Nichols added, noting that NALC Food Drive donations stay within the area where they are collected.

Dennis Bonilla of the Daytona Beach Love Center in Florida noted that the NALC Food Drive comes at an especially crucial time, since summertime is when many low-income children lose access to free or reduced-cost meals provided by schools. “These are the days the food banks run dry,” he told the News-Journal.

“Our inventory is low, so this deposit will help us feed kids through those sum-mer months,” San Antonio Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper told the Express-News. “It comes at the right time” for the 58,000 people who depend on his food bank each week, he said.

Meanwhile, San Antonio Branch 421 Vice President Dan Torres calls Food Drive Day “the best day of the year for letter carriers.

“We see the love that the community has for each other,” he told the Express-News. “We’re very proud of the city, espe-cially when we get to the food bank at the end of the day and we see the thousands and thousands of pounds of food that they provide for other citizens.”

The drive’s timing also works well for Moline, IL’s River Bend Foodbank, which serves 22 counties in the Quad Cities region, which is made up of Moline and Rock Island on the south shore of the Mississippi River and Davenport and Bet-tendorf, IA, on the north shore.

“Many families are going to be stressed over the next few months as school is letting out,” Executive Director Tom Laughlin told the Quad-City Times. “We’re going through 600,000 pounds of food a month; we need every can.”

“The holidays are over and the idea of hunger in the Quad Cities is not upper-most in people’s minds,” added retired letter carrier Mary Rourke, a member of Davenport Branch 506. “This is the perfect time of year for this.”

Since the drive always takes place on the second Saturday in May, that often lands it on the day before Mother’s Day—a happenstance that Sumter, SC Food Drive Coordinator David Floyd believes helps to boost food drive generosity. “When you think about mothers,” the retired letter carrier told The Item, “moms don’t want people going hungry.”

An ongoing needThe food drive really makes a differ-

ence, Lafayette, IN, letter carrier Kathy Matson told WLFI-TV, because “there’s a lot of people in our community who struggle with having enough money for food or rent, and they have to choose” between the two.

“It’s a lot of work in addition to car-rying your route,” Matson added. “You pick up a lot of food, but we have a lot of volunteers who help out tremendously.”

The second Saturday in May was chosen for the NALC’s annual national food drive to help re-stock food pantries months after the traditional winter-holiday donation push and right before school programs that provide free or reduced-cost meals for students shut down for the summer months.

As it happens, the drive also coincides with the height of tornado season in the United States, and this year, its timing proved fortuitous for Oklahoma families devastated by the May twisters.

National food drive sponsor Feeding America was on the ground immediately following the storms, coordinating with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma City to help sort and package the more than 300,000 pounds of non-perishable food

that had been picked up by Sooner State carriers on Saturday, May 11.

“It is an act of providence that this food was collected just days before this tor-nado struck,” Feeding America President and CEO Bob Aiken said.

“Through the Postal Service’s unique delivery network, letter carriers touch every address in America six days a week,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “Mean-while, Feeding America has its own network and expertise, which it uses to quickly and efficiently get food and supplies to com-munities affected by disasters.

“We are proud to continue our partner-ship with Feeding America,” Rolando said, “and we are truly thankful that our drive this year was able to provide a measure of relief for Oklahoma’s tornado victims.”

“We see the need out there,” St. Paul, MN Branch 28 Food Drive Coordinator Patti Henry told Northfield News, “so it’s our way of giving back to our community. We’re proud to be a part of that.”

Robert Coleman, director of food ser-vices for The Lord’s Place in Palm Beach, FL, told the Palm Beach Post that when stock gets low, the pantry has to pay for food like canned beans and rice. “When the letter carriers and Palm Beach County Food Bank are able to collect food and donate it to us, it makes life a lot better for us and our clients,” he said.

West Palm Beach Branch 1690 member Mike Goudron said that the generos-ity seems to increase every year. “Some people left out two or three bags,” he said after this year’s drive. “It’s extra work, but it’s all for a good cause.”

And so many people seem to be in need, Green Bay, WI Branch 619 Food Drive Coordinator Vicki Lewis-McKee told WGBA-TV, including many elderly, disabled and working poor. “People don’t realize you can’t raise a family of four on $7 or $8 an hour,” she said.

“We are just very thankful to the letter carriers for doing this,” Grand Oak Mis-sion Center Coordinator Dinah Ensor told the Springfield [MO] News-Leader. “It’s a lot of extra work for them.”

Springfield Branch 203 member Steve Brison observed that people in low-in-

come areas often donate more food than residents of more affluent areas. “We’ve gone to food banks before,” Brison’s customer Stephanie Lanig told the News-Leader. “I know if we have it, we can give it. Other people need food, too.”

The food drive is personal for Central Florida Branch 1091 member Ana Ramos. Ramos told the Orlando Sentinel that although she now has a good-paying mid-dle-class job, when she moved to Orlando from Puerto Rico in 1994 she went through a period when she relied on donations to feed her own children, and this experience fuels her passion for the drive.

“I know that donating can be hard at times, but if we all give just one small can it will make all the difference,” Ramos said. “You never know when it may be you that needs the donation.”

Official approvalPolitical leaders at all levels often

help boost our annual food drive effort through official proclamations, speeches and even hands-on assistance.

For example, in Virginia, Gov. Bob McDonnell officially recognized May 11 as “Letter Carriers Food Drive Day” in the Old Dominion. “Letter carriers are often among the first people to recognize hun-ger within their communities,” he wrote in the proclamation, noting that “carriers’ daily contact with the majority of house-holds in our Commonwealth increases their awareness of Virginians who cannot afford to properly nourish themselves and their families and who experience exces-sive hunger on a daily basis.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he was proud to support the drive in

his city. “It is a wonderful testament to the people of Chicago that [letter carriers] come together regularly to sup-port those less fortunate, and this is a perfect way for Chicagoans to show the breadth and depth of their character.”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nut-ter and Hawaii County, HI Mayor Billy Kenoi issued similar proclamations, as did Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

“Many Central Floridians are in need of supplemental food assistance each month,” Dyer wrote. “The National As-sociation of Letter Carriers Food Drive effort is a community-based endeavor, and the food collection will remain in the Metro Orlando area.”

In Davenport, IA, Rep. Dave Loebsack provided a national perspective on the drive as he joined Mayor Bill Gluba alongside letter carriers and volunteers to help pack up collections at the West 2nd Street post office. “I’m trying to draw attention to the fact that this sequestra-tion is a really bad idea that is hurting the people who need our help most,” Loebsack told the Quad-City Times, referring to the automatic set of drastic federal spending cuts that took effect in March. “Yes, we need to get our financial house in order, but we need to be smart about cuts and make sure they don’t hurt the most vulnerable in our society.”

A collection collective“It’s true that letter carriers lead this

annual food collection effort,” Presi-dent Rolando said, “but our annual success comes from working side-by-side with many sponsors and volun-teers on the national and local levels.”

Lawton, OK Merged Branch 1123 food drive coordinator Matt Milam echoed Rolando’s observation, noting in the Duncan Banner that all social classes and ages participate in the drive. “It’s great

to see younger people getting involved, along with the older people,” Milam said.

Among those joining the NALC as national food drive sponsors this year were were the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, U.S. Postal Service, AARP, United Way, AFL-CIO and Feeding America.

Plastic bags with Jeff Keane’s official “Family Circus” food drive cartoon were distributed by the Publix grocery chain and by AARP, as well as by many Kroger grocery store locations. The Florida Times Union distributed its Sunday, May 5, edition in a special sleeve bearing a food drive reminder, conveniently providing postal patrons with bags to store non-per-ishable donations the following Saturday.

AARP promoted our effort through its sponsorship of NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 “Drive to End Hunger” car. The senior citizens organization also produced an audio “news feed” that radio stations could use to announce the drive.

Campbell Soup Co., a longtime food drive partner, held a drive kickoff on Thursday, May 9, with a major news media event at its headquarters in New Jersey. The company also donated 1 mil-lion cans of soup to the drive.

Also serving as national sponsors were Uncle Bob’s Self-Storage; GLS Companies; Source Direct Plastics; and Valassis/Red Plum and Valpak, who each printed food drive reminders on the front of their familiar coupon mailers.

For Clarksville, TN Branch 364 President Ray Maki, his objective for the food drive is simple. “Our goal for the event is to put more food in the food banks than they had yesterday,” he told The Tennessean.

“And that’s exactly right,” President Rolando said. “After the food gets distributed to our neediest customers and the results are tallied, what really matters most is that we have played a real part in drawing attention to the problem of hunger in America, and in helping to solve that problem.” PR
