STATISTICAL COMPARISON GAME NOTESGusties Take To Gridiron For 97th Season... The Gustavus football team kicks off its 97th season on Saturday at Lloyd Hollingsworth Field. Over the previous 96 years, the Gusties have compiled a record of 467-335-21, including a record of 215-122-8 in St. Peter. With 22 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships, Gustavus has claimed the second-most league titles in the 93-year history of the conference. Only Saint John’s (31) has claimed more MIAC championships.

Follow The Gusties On KNUJ... KNUJ AM 860 out of New Ulm, Minnesota will once again broadcast all ten Gustavus regular season football games. The voice of the Golden Gusties Tom Wheeler will handle the play-by-play duties for the eighth consecutive season. Wheeler will once again be joined by 1984 Gustavus graduate and former Gustie football player Ken Ericson on the live call of this year’s games. Fans can listen to the KNUJ broadcasts on the Internet through the Gustavus Athletics website. In addition, Gustavus will once again video stream all home games for viewing on your computer and portable internet device through GameCentral by Stretch Internet. Gustavus Preview/Position Breakdown...

The Gustavus Adolphus football team enters the 2013 season with renewed goals and expectations. The Gusties will look to improve on an overall record of 3-7 and an MIAC record of 2-6 from a year ago. To do so, Gustavus will turn to its 37 returning letterwinners from last season to lead the way. Those 37 letterwinners include 17 starters (eight offense, nine defense), who will bring valuable experience to the field.

Offensive Line... Gustavus’ key offensive strength rests in its veteran offensive line. While losing All-MIAC Second Team performer Brian Grundmeyer due to graduation leaves a void, all five linemen expected to start in Saturday’s game started at least two games with three of the five starting eight or more games last season. The group of Marcus Kelly (So., Woodbury, Minn.), Lyle Opdahl (Sr., Norwood Young America, Minn.), David

Notes

Gschneidner (Sr., Edina, Minn.), Trevor Winkelman (Sr., Eagan, Minn.), and Wyatt Adams (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) bring a great deal of experience back to a front that cleared the way for 2012 All-MIAC running back Jeffrey Dubose (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.).

Running Back... Dubose returns for his senior season just 40 rushing yards shy of 2,000 in his career. Despite playing in just seven games, Dubose rushed for 665 yards and seven touchdowns while catching 16 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns a season ago.

Wide Receiver... Dubose is joined by wide receivers Phillip Butler (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Michael Hintze (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.), who return as threats on the perimeter. Butler caught 36 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 231 yards last season. Hintze hauled in 33 receptions for 449 yards to go along with five touchdowns.

Quarterback... With the graduation of quarterbacks Muresuk Mena and Tim Stepka, Mitch Hendricks (So., Laporte, Minn.) is expected to take the reigns of the Gustie offense in 2013. Gustavus completed 138-of-241 passes for 1,654 yards and 12 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions last season.

Tight End... Rounding out the offense at the tight end position will be Jordan Rudenick (Sr., Nicollet, Minn.) and former offensive tackle Alex Brodjeski (Sr., Savage, Minn.). Last season, Rudenick was a big play factor for the Gusties. The senior caught eight passes for 152 yards for an average of 19.0 yards per catch. Brodjeski played in nine games last season, starting four of them while playing on the offensive line.

On defense, the Gusties will look to once again force turnovers. Last season, Gustavus ranked third in the MIAC with 27 takeaways, which included 18 fumble recoveries and nine interceptions.

Defensive Backs... The leader of the ball-hawking brigade, Torey Asao (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) returns at the cornerback position after picking off three passes a season ago. Jake Forcier (Jr., Watkins, Minn.) intercepted two passes after playing just five games last season. He resumes his spot at the strong safety

position after being sidelined due to injury midway through the season. Free safety Beau Bachman (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) and cornerback Zach Dilger (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) each recorded one INT last season and will likely round out the starting defensive backfield. Kellan Euerle (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) will add depth in the secondary after intercepting two passes in 2012.

Linebackers... Senior Joe Haas (Mission, Kan.) will anchor a linebacking core that featured the top four tacklers for the Gusties a season ago. A 2012 All-MIAC Second Team selection, Haas led the way with 91 tackles (45 solo, 46 assist) including five tackles for losses and two sacks. Lucas Kleinschrodt (Sr. Alden, Minn.) was second on the team in tackles with 68 (39 solo, 29 assist), followed by Matt Keller (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) with 63 (24 solo, 39 assist), and Anthony Boyce with 50 (26 solo, 24 assist). Boyce also led the team in sacks (3.5) and was second in forced fumbles (3).

Defensive Line... The defensive line will take shape around 2012 All-MIAC Second Team performer Donte Green (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.). Green was the “Man in the Middle” last season, posting 41 tackles (17 solo, 24 assist), four of which were for losses. Mitch Snare (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) is expected to fill the hole left by the graduation of Jesse Newell at the other defensive tackle. At the ends, the Gusties welcome back Andrew Lonneman (Jr., Adrian, Minn.), who missed six games with an injury last season. Cameron Cropsey (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) will be the other bookend of the defensive line. Cropsey recorded 30 tackles (16 solo, 14 assist) last season and led the team in tackles for loss with 5.5.

Special Teams... On special teams, the Gusties bring in a fresh new face in the kicking department as Thomas Schleusener (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) makes the switch from the soccer pitch to the gridiron. Schleusener, a goalkeeper on the men’s soccer team last season, will handle both the placekicking and kickoff responsibilities. Jordan Rudenick (Sr., Nicollet, Minn.) will once again take his place as the punter after punting 37 times for 1,380 total yards and an average of 37.3 yards per punt. Rudenick downed 13 punts inside the 20-yard line and

recorded three punts over 50 yards.

Senior Leadership... With 22 seniors on this year’s squad, the Gustavus roster features the fourth-most seniors on any Gustie football team in the last 20 years. The 2003 (28), 2002 (26), and 2011 (23) teams are the only three squads during that span to have more seniors wearing Black and Gold. This year’s senior class features four offensive linemen, three wide receivers, two running backs, and two tight ends from the offensive side of the ball, while the defense features five defensive backs, four defensive linemen, and two linebackers.

Gustie Football Around The Globe... The 2013 Gustavus football team features a total of 107 players from nine different states and, for the second time in the last four years, a second country outside the United States. Of those 107 players, 93 claim Minnesota as their native state. A combined four players call Kansas home, while one player each hails from California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Mexico also makes its presence felt on this year’s roster as it is the homeland of three Gusties, all of whom hail from Cancun.

The Series... Saturday’s game features just the second meeting all-time between Gustavus and Simpson on the gridiron. In the only other meeting between these two teams last season in Indianola, Gustavus quarterback Muresuk Mena scrambled for a 35-yard touchdown to put the Gusties on top 7-3. Simpson then scored 10 unanswered points to take a 17-7 lead. Mena countered with a 64-yard touchdown pass on a screen to running back Jeffrey Dubose to cut the lead to 17-14 headed to halftime. Gustavus came out to score 21 unanswered points of its own in the third quarter due in large part to the Gustie defense forcing three turnovers, two of which turned into defensive touchdowns. Simpson went on to score nine points in the final three minutes, but it was too little too late for the Storm as the Gusties came away with the 35-26 victory.

Meet The Head Coaches... Gustavus Head Coach Peter Haugen is in his fifth season at the helm of the Gustavus football program. Haugen has a combined record of 13-27 in his first four seasons. A graduate of Bethel University, Haugen was the head coach at

2013 Gustavus Football Game Notes

Washburn High School in Minneapolis prior to coming to Gustavus. Simpson Head Coach Jim Glogowski is now in his sixth season at the head of the Simpson football team. Glogowski, a 1997 graduate of the University of South Dakota and former defensive standout for the Coyotes, began his tenure at Simpson in 2008 and has amassed an overall record of 24-27 over his previous five-plus years leading the Storm.

About Simpson... The Simpson football team enters Saturday’s contest coming off a 55-21 win over Iowa Wesleyan last weekend in Indianola, Iowa. The Storm racked up over 600 yards of total offense in the game after gaining 352 yards rushing and 257 yards passing. Quarterback Taylor Nelson completed 16-of-18 passes on the afternoon for 210 yards to go along with four touchdowns through the air. He added 74 yards on the ground stemming from nine carries. Taylor’s favorite target for the afternoon was Brad Vogel, who caught eight passes for 139 yards and two scores. On the ground, Ethan Calvert led the way with 91 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Following closely behind was Jordan Beem, who carried the ball 12 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Simpson’s 55 points currently ranks 10th in all of NCAA Division III football after week one.

The Simpson defense allowed 322 yards passing in the game, but allowed just 16 yards rushing for a total of 338 yards. Safety Sean DeGoey, linebacker Shane Venteicher, and defensive tackle Alex Severn led the way with five tackles each while defensive end Casey Coy and defensive tackle Bud Smith both recorded a sack.

Gustavus In Home Openers... The Gusties have compiled an all-time record of 56-36-4 in home openers in the 96-year history of the program. The latest of which was a 26-24 loss to Augsburg last season. Gustavus claimed an 11-6 win over Mankato Normal in its first ever home game in 1902. That game was played on what is now the Nicollet County Fairgrounds on the north end of St. Peter.

All-Conference Performers Return... The Gustavus offense will look to lone All-MIAC First Team performer Jeffrey Dubose (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) to lead the charge in 2013. The senior racked up 665 yards on 135 carries in just seven games

Game 1 . September 14 . Simpson

Notes

played last season. As the Gusties’ leading rusher, Dubose averaged 4.9 yards per carry and also tallied seven touchdowns. Returners joining Dubose with MIAC postseason awards include defensive tackle Donte Green (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.), and linebacker Joe Haas (Sr., Mission, Kan.). Both Green and Haas were All-MIAC Second Team selections a year ago after recording 41 tackles and 91 tackles, respectively.

Dubose Nears 2,000... Senior running back Jeffrey Dubose enters the 2013 season needing 40 rushing yards to reach the 2,000-yard milestone, a mark that has been eclipsed just 10 times in the 97-year history of Gustavus football. Dubose currently sits in 11th on the all-time career rushing list, 119 yards behind Scott Anderson `92 who ranks 10th with 2,079 career rushing yards. Dubose has a chance to crack the top five with a solid season. The senior would need 791 yards to surpass Travis Prunty `00, who is currently fifth among Gustavus rushing leaders with 2,750 yards.

MIAC Off To Fast Start... For the second year in a row, member institutions of the MIAC that provide football began the year in undefeated fashion. Seven of the nine schools in the MIAC won their opening game of 2013 last weekend for a perfect 7-0 record to open the season. The only other conference to have all of its teams who played in week one win their opening game was the Liberty League, which went 6-0 on Saturday. Gustavus and Bethel were the only two teams that did not participate in the season’s opening week. Over the past five years, the MIAC has accumulated a record of 32-3 in the opening weekend of the season.

By The Numbers...

40: The number of yards senior running back Jeffrey Dubose needs to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark in his collegiate career.

17: The number of starters returning on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball combined.

27: The number of takeaways registered by the Gustavus defense last season, which ranked third in the MIAC. The Gusties led the league in fumble recoveries with 18.

total of 73 yards on 13 carries for an average of 5.6 yards per rush. Simpson’s offense began to pick up some steam after the Mena score, answering on the ensuing drive with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Rogers, bringing the score to 17-7. Rogers was Nelson’s top target in the game, making a game-high eight catches for 187 yards with two touchdowns. Not to be outdone by Simpson’s big play, the Gusties responded right back on their next drive with a touchdown, cutting the lead to 17-14. On third-and-11 from the Gustavus 36-yard line, Mena opted to throw a screen pass to running back Jeffrey Dubose (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.). After catching the screen and turning up field, an opening appeared down field following two key blocks by offensive lineman Lyle Opdahl (Sr., Norwood Young America, Minn.) and David Gschneidner (Jr., Edina, Minn.). Dubose hit the crease and scampered 64 yards down the sideline, stiff-arming a Simpson defender at the five-yard-line on his way into the endzone. Dubose benefited from the solid play of Gustavus’ offensive line throughout the afternoon, running for 119 yards on 26 carries for an average of 4.6 yards per run. The final count saw Gustavus gain a total of 366 yards (211 rush, 155 pass). The Gusties had no turnovers and were 1-of-2 in the red-zone. Simpson racked up a total of 466 yards, 427 of which were through the air. Muresuk Mena played mistake free football in his first start under center, finishing 8-for-14 for 155 yards and two touchdowns through the air. His counterpart Taylor Nelson was 28-for-54 for 427 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Gustavus was led defensively by safety Jake Forcier (So., Watkins, Minn.), who had a team-high seven tackles (all solo) and one interception. Andrew Lonneman finished with a game-high three sacks and three tackles for loss.

SEPT. 14, 2012

GUSTAVUS 35SIMPSON 26

Indianola, Iowa (2,739)Bill Buxton Stadium77 degrees, Sunny

Indianola, Iowa – The Gustavus Adolphus football team kicked off its 2012 season with a 35-26 win over Simpson College on Saturday afternoon at Bill Buxton Stadium. Gustavus was able to capitalize on Simpson’s mistakes throughout the day, scoring two defensive touchdowns and forcing a total of five turnovers. Gustavus wins its first season-opener since 2008 and is now 1-0 for the first time in Head Coach Peter Haugen’s tenure. Simpson suffers its first loss of the year and is now 1-1. With Simpson leading 17-14 at the start of the second half, the momentum began to swing towards the Gustavus sideline following a booming 62-yard punt by Jordan Rudenick (Jr., Nicollet, Minn.) that was downed on the seven-yard-line. Three plays later on third-and-15 from the three-yard-line, defensive lineman Nolan Wester (Jr., Kettle River, Minn.) sacked quarterback Taylor Nelson in the endzone, forcing a fumble that was covered up by fellow defensive lineman Donte Green (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) for a touchdown. Following the extra point, Gustavus led 21-17 just five minutes into the quarter. The Gustie defense came up big again on Simpson’s following drive when cornerback Torey Asao (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) picked off a tipped pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown, extending Gustavus’ lead to 28-17. After the two teams traded possessions, Gustavus came up with its third turnover of the third quarter when defensive end Andrew Lonneman (So., Adrian, Minn.) sacked Nelson, forced him to fumble, and recovered the ball on the 15-yard line. The Gustavus offensive converted the turnover to points on the very next play when quarterback Muresuk Mena (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) found tight end Rudenick on 15-yard catch-and-run touchdown. In the third quarter alone, Gustavus scored 21 unanswered points and forced three turnovers, leading by the score of 35-17 entering the final quarter. Rudenick’s touchdown capped Gustavus’ scoring for the afternoon. It would take Simpson until the 2:38 mark of the fourth quarter to get back on the scoreboard. Logan Klein hit a 30-yard field goal to make the score 35-20, and Nelson found wide receiver Taylor Rogers with a 15-yard touchdown to bring the score to a final at 35-26. The Simpson offense had a hard time getting back into rhythm in the second half – a credit to a relentless pass rush, tight coverage in the secondary, and play of the Gustavus punt team. The Gustie defense registered six sacks and intercepted two passes, while Jordan Rudenick stole the show in his first game as the full-time punter. Rudenick punted six times for 290 yards for an average of 48.3 yards per punt. He downed five punts inside the 20-yard line, three of which were downed inside the five-yard-line. Even when called upon to fill in for Rudenick at punter, Tom Huepenbecker (Sr. Middleton, Wis.) pinned a 34-yard punt inside the 15-yard line. Huepenbecker also finished 5-for-5 on extra point tries. The game began with Simpson taking a 3-0 lead after Klein knocked in a 29-yard field goal that capped a six-play, 30-yard drive After a punt and a blocked field goal attempt, Gustavus scored its first points of the 2012 season with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter. Muresuk Mena, who seemed to be dead in the water on fourth-and-two when his key target was covered, made a play with his feet, seeing daylight downfield and taking the ball in for a 35-yard touchdown run that gave Gustavus a 7-3 advantage. Mena would tally two runs over thirty yards in the game, gaining a

In four seasons at the head of the Gustavus Adolphus football program, Haugen has compiled an overall record of 13-27 and an MIAC record of 10-22. Last season, Gustavus received four all-conference selections in running back Jeffrey Dubose (St. Paul, Minn.), offensive lineman Brian Grundmeyer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), defensive lineman Donte Green (Minneapolis, Minn.), and linebacker Joe Haas (Mission, Kan.). Dubose earned first team distinction while Grundmeyer, Green, and Haas all earned a spot on the second team.

Haugen, who was the head football coach at Washburn High School for 15 years prior to coming to Gustavus, compiled an overall record of 111-44 during that span, while winning 11 league championships and posting a league record of 76-8. He directed the Millers to the Class AAAA quarterfinals in 2007 finishing with a mark of 9-3. In his last season as the Millers head coach, Haugen’s squad posted a mark of 8-2. While building the program at Washburn, Haugen increased player participation from 35 players in 1994 to 110 players. He also implemented academic monitoring and meal programs for student athletes as well as creating and directing the highly successful Washburn Athletic Leadership Academy. He served as the chair of the Minneapolis Football Conference this past year and he is an active clinician working at many local and regional clinics including the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic. Haugen was also a member of the Metro coaching staff for the Minnesota All-Star game in 1998. He started his coaching career at his alma mater serving as the offensive line coach during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

A three-sport standout at Bethel, Haugen was a starting tight end on the football team, a starting goaltender on the hockey team, and a starting catcher on the baseball team in the late ‘80s and early 90s. In his senior year, he earned All-Conference honors in football, and was selected Most Valuable Player of the hockey team.

Haugen became the 17th head coach in the 95-year history of Gustavus football. The Golden Gusties have a long and storied football tradition that includes 22 MIAC titles. The program ranks in the top-50 all-time in Division III (out of 235 institutions) with a .580 winning percentage (467-335-21). The Gusties will soon join a very elite group of 37 NCAA Division III institutions whose football teams have won 500 games. Along with great teams, Gustavus has also been blessed with many outstanding individual players, which includes 29 players who have received All-America honors, 12 who have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and five who have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Most recently in 2012, senior safety Brad Kruckeberg was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Peter, and his wife, Brenda live in St. Peter with their three children, Zeke (15), Zoe (13), and Zetta (7).
