Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, supporters and fans!

We begin another year of KCC athletics, and I continue to be inspired by the level of commitment and determination of our student athletes to succeed not just in their respective sports but in the classroom! Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our complete coaching staff and are supported by the KCC Board

of Trustees and our community. Participation and success in athletics is often the basis for many of life’s skills and experiences.

Competition through KCC’s six intercollegiate sports enhances a student athlete’s desire for excellence while further developing teamwork, communication, time management and commitment skills.

As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and support to our student athletes.

The resources of KCC are available to all student athletes to aid them in the achievement of their educational goals as well as their athletic achievements. The faculty and staff at the college will always encourage all of our students to set high expectations and to apply themselves toward achieving those goals.

It is an honor to be part of the Cavaliers family, and I would like to thank the parents of our student athletes, each member of the coaching staff, and the members of our Cavalier Club who help to support our athletic teams. Please join the Board of Trustees, myself, faculty, staff, and all Cavaliers fans in wishing each of our teams and coaches a successful season.

In addition, I hope you will join me in welcoming Mr. Julian Springer as the coordinator of athletic academic success program and head men’s basketball coach for Kankakee Community College. He will play a large role in the academic success of our student athletes.

2013 Season PreviewThe Cavaliers are coming off a 39-22 season, which included an 11th consecutive sectional championship and a fourth place finish in the Region IV Tournament. The Cavaliers also finished second in the nation in team batting average (.362). With 11 players returning and a strong group of new additions, the Cavaliers are preparing to make another run at a Region IV Championship.

“A strength of this years’ team is our pitching staff and that will be a key to our success,” says Head Coach Todd Post. “We return four pitchers that saw significant innings in our rotation and three key pitchers in our bullpen.”

Those starting pitchers include sophomore Matt Schwitz (7-4 record, 3.53 ERA, 89.1 IP), Justin Theisen (7-4 record, 69.2 IP, 4.13 ERA), Jake Lanning (7-0 record, 3.90 ERA, 64.2 IP), and Rodney Bettcher (5-2 record, 4.79 ERA, 62 IP). Freshmen Tim Blake, Tyler Sabol and Tyler Curtis; and sophomore Ken DeCook also are competing for the last two spots in the starting rotation. The bullpen is always a key to the pitching staff and this year the Cavs return three key players. Right hands Steve Cernak (22 app, 2-1 record, 4.91 ERA), Max Highland (22 app, 3-0 record, 5.73 ERA), and Casey Fletcher (16 app, 5 saves, 5.51 ERA) will be joined by freshman lefties Luke Jarvis and Ryan Kramer. Also, talented freshmen Kyle Pool, Alex

Bullard, Adam Rutz, and Cori Herbert will see action out of the pen.

The Cavaliers also return some offense with returning All-American and All-Region IV OF Casey Fletcher (.397 BA, 194 AB, 77 H, 17 doubles, 6 triples, 1 HR, 58 RBI), 3B Jake Lanning (.391 BA, 161 AB, 63 H, 16 doubles, 13 walks, 35 RBI), 1B Evan Clark (.358 BA, 67 AB, 24 H, 3 doubles, 8 RBI), OF Steve Clancy (.310 BA, 100 AB, 31 H, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 14 RBI), and OF Kjeld Torkelson (.287 BA, 181 AB, 52 H, 9 doubles, 7 triples, 3 HR, 39 RBI). Key freshman include shortstop Ryan Montcalm, OF Eric Phillis, catchers John McLaughlin and Zach Barkdull, 1B Kerry Hickerson and 2B Kalvin Thong. Outfielders Cully Wilson and Tyler Knight, along with infielders Mike Renner and Tylor Hedge, will compete for playing time and add important depth to the Cavaliers bench.

“Consistent pitching and defense are the two most important parts of this great game, “says Coach Post. “I feel this group will make us competitive every time out. We have great depth on the pitching staff and a core of these guys gained experience and had some success as freshman. Our goal each year is to win 40 games and a Region IV Championship. We have to play good baseball and be prepared for the tournament that starts the second week of May.”
