2013 Lady Lazers Basketball Camp

July 29 - August 2, 2013 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Girls ages 7-17

THE STAFF

Mike Wheeler – Director:Coach Wheeler heads into his 12th season as head women’s basketball coach. Before coming to Onondaga Community College he coached at the high school varsity level for six years. In his tenure, he has built the women’s program into a national powerhouse. He has compiled an overall record of 274-72. He has had a winning season in every year as head coach. He has led the Lady Lazers to four straight Midstate Athletic Conference championships and 58 consecutive conference wins. In the past five years the team has compiled a record of 153-20 and has won three Region III titles. The team has received a berth in three national tournaments the past five years. They have appeared in three national final fours and this past year they finished 29-3. They went to the regional finals for the 5th straight year under Coach Wheeler. Coach Wheeler has received Midstate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times, Region III Coach of the Year 2009 & 2010 , and National District Coach of the Year in 2009 & 2011.

Bill Motto – Assistant Coach:Coach Motto enters his fourth season as assistant coach at Onondaga Community College. Coach Motto had an extensive career with various colleges. During his first year of coaching, the Oneonta State Men’s team went all the way to the NCAA D-III Tournament national finals. During his second year at Oneonta, the team qualified for the regional ECAC Tournament.

After spending a number of years working with community and high school boy’s programs in the area, Bill was asked to join the women’s basketball team coaching staff at Cazenovia College where he was also the Director of the college’s Sport Management program. During his seven years coaching at Cazenovia – the last four as the Women’s Head Coach – he helped build a solid program and was able to help lead the team to its first ever post-season tournament (ECAC) invitation.

Elizabeth Casey – Assistant Coach:Coach Casey enters her second season as assistant coach. Coach Casey brings a great deal of college basketball knowledge to the program. She was a four year starter at Hamilton College. Coach Casey went on to receive her Masters and Ph.D. in Psychology at Kent State University. Coach Casey currently works at Onondaga Community College as a psychology professor.

Brittany Almonte – Co-Director:Brittany Almonte graduated high school in 2004 from East Syracuse-Minoa. She went on to Nazareth College in Rochester, NY where she played basketball and studied business. She then transferred to Onondaga Community College. At OCC she majored in Humanities and became the starting point guard for the Lady Lazers and helped them win their first MSAC Championship in the school’s history. After graduating from OCC, Brittany received a full athletic scholarship to play Division II basketball at the New York Institute of Technology where she became a starting guard. Brittany graduate from NYIT in 2009 with a degree in Communications. After graduating, Brittany was asked to be the Assistant Woman’s Basketball coach for the nationally ranked lady lazers. Brittany has been a coach for the Lady Lazer’s basketball camp for the past 7 years. Brittany also is a coach for the men’s lazer camp along with other high school camps in the area.

Coaching Staff: The staff will be made up of several outstanding area basketball coaches and players. The low ratio of staff to campers allows for the opportunity for a great deal of individual instruction.

Guest Speakers:The camp will have a featured speaker each day. Each speaker will instruct the campers on a specific aspect of the game.

CAMP INFORMATION

The Onondaga Lady Lazers Basketball Camp will emphasize basketball basics, which will be developed and sharpened through daily sessions. Fundamentals will include shooting, ball handling, passing, rebounding, individual moves, movement without the ball, defensive skills, and conditioning. Game situations each day will provide practice of fundamentals in a competitive atmosphere.

LOCATION: All camp activities will be held at Onondaga Community College. The college is home to first-rate facilities including Allyn Hall, the SRC Arena and Events Center, and Gordon Student Center.

HOURS: The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Campers should check in by 8:45 a.m. on the first day of camp. To facilitate early dropoff and/or late pickup, the gym will open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. each day.

FEE: All registrations received by July 12th qualify for the special early registration rate of $200 per camper. The fee after July 12th for all campers is $225. The Southwest YMCA members and employees of Onondaga Community College will also receive a $25 discount. No refunds will be issued after camp has begun. Please make checks payable to Onondaga Enterprises, Inc.

T-SHIRT & BASKETBALL: Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt and basketball, as well as, a camp certificate and a comprehensive workout program.

LUNCH: Each camper may bring a lunch and beverage. Campers may purchase lunch on-site.
