COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS

GRANTS PANEL • Joey Blum: Writer, Publisher, Arts Agent • Tym Mazet: Visual Artist, ArtWalk Committee Member, Former owner of Imagine Gallery • Sam Harmon: WOW Hall House Manager & Gallery Coordinator, Musician • Savannah Barrett: UO Arts Admin. Grad Student & Poet • Marina Hajek: Artist, Second Saturday Art Walk Coordinator • Kip Amend: Architect & Lane Arts Council Board Member • Billie Moser: City of Eugene Cultural Services Division

Lane Arts Council announced about $50,000 in grants to eight arts organizations and 16 arts projects. The Community Arts Grant helps ensure diverse and accessible arts opportunities and experiences for Eugene artists, audiences and participants by providing funds to arts projects that have a direct impact on Eugene residents. The Community Arts Program is funded by the City of Eugene Cultural Services Division and is administered by Lane Arts Council.

In 2013-2014, Community Arts Grants provided funds for ballet workshops, film festivals, reading series, historic public art, blues music in schools, poetry slams, African music & dance performances, theater in parks, reuse art exhibits, improv theater, exhibits by artists with disabilities, modern art and more.

Grant Highlight: Object Afterlife This year grant funds were awarded to the Object Afterlife Art Challenge, an art initiative that raises awareness of environmental issues of waste and over consumption by challenging artists to incorporate scrap materials into their usual mediums. The project, organized by the Materials Exchange Center for Community Arts, prompts artists to create works within two months with provided scrap materials from their art center. The pieces were then on display in conjunction with the annual Eugene Celebration in downtown Eugene.

fIRST fRIdAY ARTwALKLane Arts Council leads the monthly First Friday ArtWalk, a well-known community event that promotes the visual arts and supports the revitalization of downtown Eugene. Over thirty galleries and venues participate in the ArtWalk, attracting over 15,000 patrons per year. Through the ArtWalk, we bolster support of local galleries and artists, engage the public in arts appreciation, involve local businesses in supporting the art, and increase cultural tourism to the region.

As a tool to engage students and bring the community to campus, we partnered with the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art for the University of Oregon ArtWalk. This campus-wide tour featured public art, student work, and major exhibitions.

In collaboration with the Last Friday Art Walk, we introduced the first ever Mural Bike Tour in August. Over 100 bikers traveled together throughout the Whiteaker neighborhood and downtown Eugene to hear interviews from the local artists who have beautified the city with their colorful murals.

In August, Isaac Marquez from the City of Eugene hosted the Art The Box Public Art Tour, exploring the recently installed art on traffic boxes throughout downtown Eugene.

Lane Arts Council teamed up with Downtown Eugene Inc. and five local wineries to integrate a WineWalk with our ArtWalk in May. ArtWalkers sampled various wines at the guided tour stops and purchased their favorite bottle at a special wine marketplace.

Lane Arts Council 2013 Annual Report 3

Arts integration isn’t just for students, it’s for teachers too. The arts support 21st Century Skills (creativity, collaboration, communty and critical thinking) and reinvigorates teachers with passion for their profession. In 2013, Lane Arts Council brought together teaching artists and classroom teachers from Oaklea Middle School, Marcola Elementary School and Two Rivers-Dos Rios Elementary School to participate in professional development and develop integrated art units that support classroom curriculum.

At Oaklea Middle School in Junction City, Lane Arts Council’s Teaching Artist Samuel Becerra partnered with classroom teachers to integrate his Latin American Music and Sculpture program with their social studies unit on ancient civilizations.

Hundreds of cat mummy sculptures and handmade flutes later, students were able to bring their textbook lessons to life through clay and music. Sixth grader Jenna says that the projects helped her focus and pay better attention in class. With purposeful arts integration programs, we are working to make sure that students, like Jenna, are engaged in school through the art they create.

ARTS EdUCATION IN SChOOLSOne student in particular has really blossomed into a young artist. His passion for drawing developed his self-confidence, positivity, increased participation in class, and respect toward himself and others. I was thrilled to see this positive change through his participation in Lane Arts Council’s arts education program. –Yvonne Manipon, Lane Arts Council Teaching Artist

Arts Education in Schools Lane Arts Council values creative expression, life-long arts education, collaboration, participation, and sustainability. These values are apparent in the many arts education opportunities offered to students across Lane County. In 2013, Lane Arts Council programs connected 30 teaching artists with 6,825 students at 26 schools. From artists residencies to after-school programs, artists and teachers collaborate across disciplines to provide high-quality arts education, deepen student engagement and support learning in core subject areas.

Culture and Education Alliance The Culture and Education Alliance (CEA) meets monthly to advocate for and support arts and cultural education in Lane County through collaboration with school districts and community organizations.
