W ith historic houses, spacious downtown lofts and newhomes suited for active lifestyles, Opelika offers a varietyof residences for newcomers.
Older, Restored Home Older, restored homes abound in the Historic District and are dot-ted throughout the countryside, standing as reminders of anothertime when antebellum plantations stretched for miles with cropsand cotton.
The antebellum home of Hayley and Jeff Welsh was built of heartpine on land purchased from Creek Indians in 1839. The Greekrevival house with a veranda supported by white columns is one ofthe oldest houses in Lee County. At one time it was a two thou-sand acre plantation that once grew sweet potatoes, as it was onecrop that could be taken to Atlanta to sell without rotting.
In 1974 the Taylor family began restoration, making every effort torestore the house to its original architectural style, while addingcontemporary comforts. Other owners renovated the master bathand updated the kitchen.
When the Welsh family purchased the house in 2003, they addedfurther renovations, taking a year and a half to remodel the upstairsand expand the den. A spacious area upstairs provides a playroomfor the Welshes’ three children, while a guest suite on the backopens to a wrap-around balcony.
The house still contains the original mantels and heart pine wide-plank floors, which are accented with Oriental rugs throughout.
In renovation, heart pine from an older house was used on thefloors and to create countertops with a rich patina finish. A wall inthe kitchen was removed to open to the den for a contemporarylook. Appliances were updated in the charming kitchen with afarmhouse sink.
During renovation, heart pine support beams were removed toenlarge the den. The wood was used to build cabinets in the office.“The cabinetmaker told us the trees were 400 years old when theywere cut,” says Hayley.
Jeff restored office spaces in downtown Opelika for his business,Alligare.
“Opelika is a wonderful small town with wonderful people,” saysHayley. “We saw the historic properties and wanted to be a part of it.”
Loft Living While traveling extensively across the globe as a filmmaker, AllisonWilmarth Kovak and her husband Aaron realized they needed aplace to hang their hat when they were in the states. They were liv-ing in Canada and looked at various locations, settling on Opelika,as Allison’s parents live here.
Since they were interested in creating a retreat without grounds mainte-nance, they undertook completely gutting and renovating a 100 plus yearold building in downtown Opelika for loft apartments.
Wide, old planks provide the flooring, while doors are flanked with flick-ering gas lanterns. The balcony was inspired from old, historical photosfrom New Orleans. On the lower level, the patio was constructed fromrepurposed bricks.
The textured brick along with original hardwood floors refinished to agleaming shine provide rich character to the open living room, kitchenand dining space. The ceiling soars to 14 feet with 16-inch wide crownmoldings from 12 layers of lumber with hand-cut dental detailing.
Nestled into the living space is a cozy media room designed as a smalljewel box with deep claret colored walls and a purple ceiling.
Living downtown allows them to walk to a large variety of restaurants andshops. After leisurely resting in their haven, Allison and Aaron fly off toanother adventurous journey.
National VillageNational Village, a community tucked away near Grand National GolfCourse on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, offers easy, active adult liv-ing. Over 300 acres of green space provide miles of nature walking trailsand four stocked fishing lakes as well as fishing and boating on the 600-acre Saugahatchee Lake. Residents enjoy unlimited play on the shortcourse at Grand National.
The Auburn-Opelika Marriott at Grand National serves as the clubhousefor the community with a new tropical resort pool complex, includingthree saltwater pools, an indoor pool, whirlpools, waterfalls and firepots. There is also a fitness center and eight clay tennis courts and four pickleball courts.
Three neighborhoods feature different home sizes. Stone Lake has thelargest homes with an average of 3,000 square feet, Quail Ridge hashomes available from 1,850 to 2,160 square foot range, and Eagle Bendoffers smaller 1,500 to 1,600 square foot homes.
The landscape is professionally maintained year round for all of thehomes. This includes mowing, debris removal, irrigation, pruning, plantreplacement and mulch replacement.
Residents at National Village range from newlyweds to retirees and enjoya carefree, active lifestyle. o

“Ensuring our Youth are Prepared to Meet the Challenges as Future Leaders”
The above slogan is a tall order facing communityleaders today. The Opelika Chamber (OCC) real-ized the predicament and decided to begin a young
leaders program for high school students in 2012, The LeeCounty Young Leaders (LCYL).
The 9-month program consists of 7 sessions that expose stu-dents to businesses, non-profits and governmental agenciesand how they all work together to create and maintain a thriv-ing community. Twenty-two highly motivated students fromLee County public, private, and home schools were given theopportunity to go through this innovative form of trainingwhich was made possible through sponsorships.
Sessions:Team Building – Twin Cedars Youth and Family Serviceshosted the group for a fun-filled day of mental and physicalactivities to encourage them to step out of their comfort zonesand build trust in each other. Coming from different highschools, and often rivals in sports, academics, and arts, these
exercises gave them a sense of accomplishment in workingtogether. This was the first session and set the stage for build-ing relationships for the rest of the year.
Health & Human Sciences – This session was probably themost eye-opening of all the sessions. The students visited theAchievement Center, East Alabama Medical Center, and theEast Alabama Food Bank. Most knew about the hospital andthe food bank, but had not heard about the AchievementCenter, an Easter Seals organization, which is very valuable inour community in putting disabled or mentally challengedindividuals to work by teaching them skills to be productiveand independent. The Food Bank really touched these studentsby discovering the needs of others, even those in our area.Because of this, two students, one from Auburn High Schooland one from Opelika High School, coordinated an “Auburn-Opelika Food Fight”, a food drive for the week of the rival foot-ball game. Over 926 pounds of canned food was collected!
Economic Development – In this session, the students tooka trip to Montgomery to hear from many of the entities in ourstate that are involved in working together to create jobs and

build and sustain economic growth while improving the stan-dard of living. For example, many students realized that it maytake several years to get a company to locate in our area. Theyrealized that it actually matters that a company is close to aninterstate or an airport or that there is plenty of parking forrestaurants and shops to survive and grow. The highlight of theday was a trip to Hyundai to see the robotic assembly and howeveryone works together to produce quality and safe vehicles.
Public Safety – The viewpoint of policemen and firemen wasreally enhanced when the students realized what these heroes gothrough and how they have to be very disciplined and preparedfor any emergency. The LCYL actually got to wear the equip-ment, go through the courses, make a finger print and learn howto protect themselves.
Local Government – This session was held in the Opelika CityCouncil Chambers to give the students a sense of how a localgovernment works. Lee County is very fortunate to have 3 formsof city government between Auburn, Opelika and SmithsStation. Local elected officials explained their own form of gov-ernment. The afternoon was spent at the Lee CountyCourthouse where the Probate Judge and some Lee CountyCommissioners were on hand to talk about county government.Students enjoyed getting to role play in a mock City CouncilMeeting and County Commission Meeting.
State Government – Our focused for this session was on stategovernment, so a trip to Montgomery was in order to visit theCapitol, the Justice Department, the State House, and the CivilRights Museum. The LCYL learned that a lot goes into makinglaws and as leaders, sometimes compromises must be made forthe greater good. The Civil Rights Museum opened their eyes toa world many had not encountered. By these examples, the LCYLwere reminded that the rights of people should be fought for andupheld at all costs; and a person should not be oppressed becauseof their ethnicity, religion, race, or gender. Senators Gerald Dialand Tom Whatley graciously treated the students to lunch as theytalked to them about their roles in government.
Judicial – The Lee County Justice Center served as the backdropfor this session. The students met with several of the judges and thedistrict attorney to discuss the judicial system and how it applies totheir particular area of law. All shared stories about some of thecases they encountered over the years as well as their journey tobecome a judge. A mock trial is planned for next year.

Opelika: An Uncommon City By: Caroline Dunklin

Opelika isn’t your average small, southern town. It isa city of character. It is a city of honesty, integrityand truthfulness. Opelika is uncommon.
To the leaders in this city, character building was an essentialpart of developing the community. The Opelika City Councilhad no opposition when they adopted the resolution tobecome a “City of Character” on April 3, 2007.
The resolution that was adopted states there are certain char-acter traits such as honesty, integrity, and truthfulness that allwould agree as admirable and desirable human qualities, tran-scending age, position, financial status, culture, education, gender and personality. For the past 6 years, Opelika hasencouraged families to have discussions about the importanceof developing these traits into their lives.
This year the Opelika Character Council encouraged the com-munity to read the book Uncommon by Tony Dungy. This isthe book the One Book - One City initiative has chosen toencourage character building in Opelika.
“The One Book - One City initiative is special because it fos-
ters a love of life long literacy among our entire community,”Becky Brown, public relations coordinator for Opelika CitySchools, said, “Students, city leaders, churches, teachers, par-ents, business people, community members and many othershave been involved in the initiative and we are proud that somany people have joined the schools and the city."
Uncommon, a New York Times best-seller, reveals tips toachieving significance that Tony Dungy learned from differentevents and struggles in his life including his experiences as acoach, the death of a child and his walk with God.
“As soon as Uncommon was selected, we began investigatingthe possibility of Coach Dungy actually visiting Opelika,”Brown said. “Thanks to the hard work of the CommunityAction Support Team (CAST), especially Dr. Arturo Menefee, the contacts were made and Coach Dungy agreed to come onApril 5.”
Former Indianapolis Colts head coach, Tony Dungy, spoke atthe Uncommon Leadership Luncheon on Friday April 5,2013 at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon took place at the Marriott
at Grand National in Opelika to celebrate the One Book - One Cityinitiative.
Over 350 people were in attendance to support Opelika being a “Cityof Character.” The Opelika community was extremely invitingtoward Dungy by standing and applauding as he entered to speak. Mayor Gary Fuller opened with the welcome followed by Rev. StevenCarson with the invocation. The Opelika High School Ovationsimpressed everyone with their talented voices before Dr. ArturoMenefee introduced Tony Dungy as the keynote speaker.
The Super Bowl winning, former NFL coach spoke about his bookUncommon and how important character education is, especiallywith young people. He also made time for questions from the audi-ence at the end of the luncheon. Dr. Mark Neighbors closed this spe-cial program.
The points that Tony Dungy spoke on were an encouragement to thiscity. Opelika cherishes character building as well as its rich heritage. Itembraces opportunities for a promising future in the community.Opelika is special. Opelika is uncommon. o

Over the years, East Alabama Medical Center(EAMC) has grown to meet the needs of the com-munity by adding physician specialists and equip-
ment. As a result, the staff at EAMC is able to treat most con-ditions, which allows patients the opportunity to recover intheir own community.
In the 2012 fiscal year, the hospital invested more than sevenmillion dollars in new equipment and technology. Purchasesinclude a dual nuclear medicine camera, a PACS systemupgrade (PACS is a picture archiving communication systemused in radiology that allows for electronic viewing and stor-age of digital medical images.), an ultrasound machine, and aHaloflex system (used in the endoscopy department).
“We recently concluded an expansion of our psychiatric serv-ices area here at EAMC. While we have been treating patientsranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, our newly expanded areaprovides space to more effectively serve these patients. It’s anarea that we are very proud of,” said John Atkinson, EAMCpublic relations manager.
In addition to providing all the necessary services at the hospi-tal, EAMC also offers a senior community complete withassisted living facilities and retirement living cottages.Atkinson added, “Our HealthPlus Fitness Center is locatednearby and was the first such gym in Alabama to be certified as a ‘medical fitness facility’ by the Medical FitnessAssociation.”
“Over the past three years, EAMC has donated more than$1.6 million in financial and in-kind donations to non-prof-its, civic groups, and area schools. In the 2012 fiscal year, morethan six million dollars in charity care was provided to theuninsured and underinsured,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson stated, “With an operating budget that surpasses$300 million and 2700 employees (2nd largest in Lee County),EAMC has a substantial impact on the local economy.”

Opelika Sportsplex – Embracing Health, Fitness & FunBy: Donna Williamson
Health & Safety
Our goal at the Opelika Sportsplex is to better ourcommunity and create activities and programs thatbring families and our community together. Our
slogan is ‘we have something for everybody’ and we take pridein that. We have something for people of different ages, dif-ferent ability levels, and different walks of life,” said LauraLeigh Pierce, Public Relations and Special ProgramsCoordinator for Opelika Parks and Recreation.
Disc Golf is a new sport that has sparked quite a bit of inter-est since being added at the Sportsplex. According to Piercethe sport was originally called Frisbee Golf, but as the sportevolved so did the name.
“Disc golf is played similarly to the actual game of golf. Wehave an 18-hole course with par 3 and par 4 holes. Some holescross bodies of water; some travel through the woods, and oth-ers are in more open areas. The goal is to throw the disc into abasket with as few throws as possible,” Pierce explains.
The Sportsplex has the only disc golf course in the area, withthe closest other one being in Fort Benning. Pierce emphasizesthat people drive from Columbus and Montgomery to play.
“We added the disc golf course because we saw a need for it inour area. The great thing about this sport is that people of anyage can play. We have grandparents coming out with theirgrandchildren, which I think is great because there aren’t toomany sports out there that allow for that kind of thing,” Pierceemphasizes.
Playing Sportsplex disc golf is free; however, players must pur-chase their own discs.
The Underwater Egg Hunt was a new program for theSportsplex this year. Mandy Johnson, aquatics director, hadseen it at another Parks and Recreation Department in thestate and thought it would be a great addition for Opelika’sEaster events.
“The egg hunt took place in varying depths of water so that childrenof all abilities could participate. We had floating eggs and weightedeggs distributed around the pool and children ages 6-10 were invitedto retrieve the eggs and place them in their bucket beside the pool. Allparticipants received Easter treats for their efforts, so no child wenthome empty-handed,” Pierce said.
Approximately 40 children participated. This activity was free toSportsplex members and only $3 for guests who participated. Piercestated, “We definitely want to continue this event in the future.”
The Sportsplex Tri for Kids was held in the summer. The kids’triathlon (tri) was for ages 6-15; however, the children were split intodifferent divisions based on their ages.
A “Small Fry Tri” was also held for children ages 2-5. This event is inits second year, but has just been relocated to the Sportsplex. The chil-dren swam and biked short distances and then ran through the splashpark to finish the event. Pierce said, “All proceeds from this event wenttowards the American Cancer Society.”
Awesome Goals Soccer is a new program that will be offered in thefall. This soccer program is specifically tailored to children betweenthe ages of 5 and 18 who have physical or mental limitations. Thisprogram focuses on learning soccer skills in a safe and accepting envi-ronment.
“While Opelika does have several great programs for children withspecial needs, especially in comparison to what other cities anddepartments have, there is always room to grow and add more pro-grams specifically for these kids.
Health Programs promote health and wellness. The Sportsplex offersphysically challenging classes like Body Pump, Cardio Intervals, andZumba, as well as classes like Yoga and Tai Chi, which improve one’smental and spiritual well-being. o

Mallory Hagan - Opelika’s Miss America
Although Miss America Mallory Hagan won her titleas the reigning Miss New York, she still calls Opelika home.
Hagan is a 2007 graduate of Opelika High School where shewas active in many extracurricular activities. Hagan’s motherMandy Moore thinks this is one of the reasons why Hagan wasso successful in her move to New York.
“Mal (Moore’s nickname for her daughter) was involved in somany extracurricular activities that she had to learn how tomanage her time wisely and prioritize. This skill came in veryhandy when she moved to New York,” Moore said.
Hagan began dancing when she was 18 months old. Mooresaid, “The main reason for my studio (Make Your MoveDance Studio) at the time was to be able to offer a place forMal’s creative outlet and natural talent to develop and grow.”
As a toddler Hagan only entered a couple of random pageants.“The dream to become Miss America started when Mal wasapproximately 13 years old, which is when she began in theMiss America system. She ended up in the top five of what was
then called the Teen Miss Alabama Pageant, and she washooked,” Moore said.
After one year at Auburn University, Hagan decided that sheneeded to “go find herself.” After a summer job and a yard sale,Hagan had $987.67, enough money to last her about threemonths in New York City (NYC), her destination.
Moore said, “She left for NYC, found her way to a ‘friend ofa friend’s house’ and two days later went on a trek to find a joband begin her New York experience. She actually secured twojobs during her first day of job hunting.”
After Hagan moved to NYC, she told everyone that she had“hung her high heels up for good.” However, that year Mooreand some close friends were having a “Miss America ViewingParty” when Hagan called. Moore said, “Mal called and wewere all talking and discussing the pageant, and I knew it wastugging at her.” That’s when Hagan said, “Mom, you knowwhat, I can do this.” Moore readily agreed and suggested thather daughter enter the Miss Brooklyn Pageant. Hagan enteredand won!
More said, “Our mantra is that everything happens for a rea-son.” Hagan had planned to return home if she had not won.
However, now she had a reason to stay.
Miss Brooklyn was a preliminary to Miss New York, whereHagan was first runner-up. Next year Hagan was MissManhattan and once again first runner-up to Miss New York. She returned her final time as Miss New York City. This time shewon the state title, which would take her to Miss America andmake her childhood dream a reality. o

A Day of Pampering By: Ann Cipperly
Shopping & Dining
When Holly Surrency decided to open her ownsalon five years ago she realized that DowntownOpelika, with the exciting changes and expan-
sion of its entertainment district, would be the perfect place forEnvy Salon. With the salon’s continued success it was an easydecision to expand the business to include a clothing boutiquewhen the space next door became available.
The doors to Coveted Closet opened last fall, capturing thesame elegant style as the salon. Sparkling chandeliers, originalhardwood floors, antique fixtures and spacious fitting roomswith high ceilings lend a feminine grace to the boutique.
“To me, fashion is as much about hair as it is about clothes,”says Holly. “We care as much about what we are wear as howour hair looks. I felt with the salon doing so well, and the traf-fic coming here that we would be able to open a boutique forthe women who come to the salon and downtown to dine atthe restaurants.
“The goal is to have options for women of all ages at an afford-able price. I think our reasonable costs are what surprise shop-pers the most. I wanted the boutique to feel inviting anduncluttered with soft cream colors and soothing lighting socustomers will feel like they are at a high end boutique, with-out the unreasonable price tags.”
When Holly goes to market, her 22-year-old daughter, Laural, flies in from Charlotte, N.C., to assist in selecting garments.Stylists from the salon also help with the selection in order to
provide a variety of ages and personal style to balance thechoices. This assures clothes in the boutique will appeal to abroad variety of customers. Along with apparel the boutiquealso carries jewelry and accessories.
In the center of the boutique is a sitting area, an added touchgeared toward men who are accompanying the shoppers.
Since there would be construction for the boutique, Hollybegan to think about expanding the salon as well. “I began tothink about what was not working in the salon and how wecould make it a smoother experience for the customer. Weadded the processing area, closed off the shampoo room tomake it more secluded, added the color bar and a new recep-tion area.
“We want to offer the best experience and service we can toour customers,” says Holly. “After five years of the salon beingopen, thinking about how it can be better for the customersand adding the boutique, it sums up everything a womanwould need for a day of pampering.
“You can come in and get a really nice outfit for an amazingprice, go to the salon and get your hair done, have a makeoverwith Bare Minerals makeup and get a manicure,” adds Holly. “Itis a full service establishment armed with everything a womanneeds to feel good about herself at the end of the day.” o

Opelika Flourishes with Economic Diversity By: Jacque Kochak
Business & Industry
Opelika is home to an unusually diverse assortment ofbusinesses, ranging from charming antique shopsand restaurants to national clothing retailers and
manufacturers. In fact, since January 2005 the thriving city hasannounced new industry investments and existing industryexpansions totaling $581 million, accounting for more than2,000 jobs.
““Our office and city leadership have a goal to diversify ourindustrial landscape,” says Lori Huguley, Opelika’s director ofeconomic development. “We don’t want to be heavily depend-ent upon one industry sector or the other.”
Opelika has become a regional shopping mecca with thegrowth of Tiger Town, now home to thriving outlets such asHobby Lobby, Office Depot, Petco, Target and Old Navy.Tiger Town, located at the intersection of Interstate 85 andHighway 280, offers more than 800,000 square feet of retailspace as well as freestanding restaurants, banks, office andhotels.
What’s remarkable about Opelika, however, is that while TigerTown flourishes, the downtown area has undergone a rebirth.Opelika’s downtown is booming, with long waits at restau-rants. Strolling along city blocks, you will find sweet smells ofbakeries scattered among gift shops, antique galleries andunique clothing stores. Another draw downtown is the EventCenter, a reception and meeting venue located in the oldCoca-Cola facility and accommodating up to 1,500 people.
“Bringing the good, high-paying industrial jobs has helpedincrease retail in our area,” Huguley notes. “And downtown isamazing with the influx of private investment. We are thrilledfor what that means to our community.”
The city’s vitality is supported by a wide variety of industrialoperations. Flowers Bakery, for example, is one of numerousfacilities in the Southeast where the $3 billion Flowers Foods, headquartered in Thomaston, GA., turns out baked goodsranging from Nature’s Own and Sunbeam bread to Tastykakeand Blue Bird snack cakes.
Opelika’s location—at the intersection of three major highways(I-85, U.S. 280 and U.S. 431) and near an international air-port—makes the city an attractive location for distributionhubs. One of the city’s largest employers is the Wal-MartGrocery Distribution Center, located in the Northeast OpelikaIndustrial Park and employing some 700 people. The region-al center is one of 42 distribution centers around the countrythat support between 75 and 100 stores within a 250-mileradius. Another large employer is the Jo-Ann Stores distribu-tion center, one of three distribution centers serving nearly 800fabric and craft stores nationwide. Jo-Ann Stores also has a dis-tribution center at the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park.
Opelika’s central location combined with the presence of near-by Auburn University has contributed to the growth of otherkinds of businesses. Because the city is situated halfwaybetween giant auto manufacturers Hyundai and Kia in
Montgomery and West Point, Ga., the city is attractive toKorean automotive component manufacturers such as MandoAmerica, Daewon America and Hanwha. Mando, whichmanufactures brake corner modules, brake calipers, suspen-sion modules and steering systems, employs more than 600workers and this year announced $35 million expansion plans.Daewon America and Hanwha are also expanding. Germanautomotive parts manufacturer Benteler Automotive also hasa facility in Opelika.
With Gambro Renal Products, a manufacturer of kidney dia-lyzer filters, Pharmavite, a manufacturer of vitamins and Afni,Inc., an inbound call center employing more than 500 peopleto answer queries, Opelika’s business and manufacturing baseis very broad.

Providers of Opelika utilities are keeping up with thetimes. Both Opelika Power Services (which providespower) and Opelika Utilities (which provides water)
have moved into new, state-of-the-art facilities. In addition,Opelika residents will soon be able to access high-speedInternet and IP-based television because of a high-tech fiberoptic network through Opelika Power Services.
“The infrastructure improvements are making the city increas-ingly attractive to business and industry as well as residents,”says Lori Huguley, the city’s economic development director.“The next piece of the puzzle will come when we are able todeploy our high-speed fiber network through Opelika PowerServices,” Huguley said. “This will bring voice, video and dataat very high speeds to residents and businesses within the Cityof Opelika, and we know this sets us apart and brings moreeconomic development opportunities our way.”
Opelika Power Services is the first municipally owned electricutility in the state of Alabama to build a fiber-to-the-home sys-tem. When the project is complete, the city will be home toone of the fastest broadband systems and most efficient elec-tric systems in the world. The fiber system will deliver cabletelevision, high speed Internet and telephone services to cus-tomers who choose Opelika Power Services as their provider.
The fiber network will be supported by state-of-the-art “smartgrid” technology, which modernizes the electrical system inaddition to enabling the delivery of broadband services. Thesmart grid enables the city to monitor and measure perform-ance across the power grid in real time, helping them to moreeffectively manage the flow of electricity and resolve problemsquickly. A detailed picture of customers’ energy needs will helpthe utility balance power supply and demand, leading to effi-ciency and reduced power.
The city first started researching the feasibility of a fiber net-work as early as 2008. Citizens voted to allow the city to gointo the cable business in 2010, and a $41 million bond issuewas authorized to pay for the project, which included buildinga facility for the smart grid electronics as well as an adminis-tration building on Fox Run Parkway that brings the city util-ity’s employees under one roof.
The fiber network isn’t the only “carrot” in place to attractfuture industry. “The increased water capacity from the newOpelika Utilities facility—an additional two million gallons aday—also will help attract industrial companies,” said OpelikaUtilities General Manager Dan Hilyer.
This spring, Opelika Utilities moved to the W. WarnerWilliams Water Resource Park at Saugahatchee Lake, whichprovides part of the city’s water supply. The new complex, inthe works for some ten years, replaces outdated systems builtin 1946 and produces eight million gallons of water a day, compared to the six million produced by the old facility. TheLEED-certified water resource park includes a modern watertreatment plant, distribution and maintenance facilities and anadministration building.
Between the new Saugahatchee facility and the Robert A. BettsWater Treatment Plant at Lake Harding in the eastern part ofLee County, Opelika Utilities produces up to 24 million gal-lons of water a day. The utility now services some 13,000accounts, but is poised to handle anticipated populationgrowth and industrial needs.

The failure rate for new businesses is phenomenal, yetOpelika boasts more than one business that has beenaround for an entire century. Yes, a hundred years.
The city is also home to several other businesses that may wellreach that auspicious anniversary, since they’ve been herealmost as long.
The oldest business in the city is Piedmont Fertilizer Co., fam-ily owned and operated since 1910. The law firm of Samford& Denson in downtown Opelika, founded in 1912, celebrat-ed a hundred years last year, and the Tatum & Tatum dentaloffice in Opelika is right behind, having survived for 95 years.Smith T Building Supply in the historic section of downtownOpelika has been serving Lee County for the last 80 years. That makes Alabama Office Supply, with stores in Opelikaand Montgomery, a relative youngster—the company is push-ing 70 years in business.
Piedmont Fertilizer Co., the manufacturer of PeafowlFertilizers, sells to both retail customers and wholesale dealersin East Central Alabama and West Georgia. In early 1910,Alabama Polytechnic Institute graduate E.F. Jackson and sev-eral partners founded the business. Jackson worked as generalmanager and by 1926 had bought out all other outstandingshares of stock, becoming the company’s president andbrought his brother Frank into the business.
Carson Jackson, the third-generation owner of the family busi-ness, says his father started bringing him to work when he was5 years old. He worked at Piedmont after school and duringthe summers, and joined the business full time in 1973. He’sbeen there ever since.
“I try to worry about my own business and let everybody elseworry about theirs,” he says. “We just try to offer service. We tryto know our products and know our customers, and we workhard—so that’s a good recipe.”
That idea of service keeps coming up when talking about theselong-lived businesses. Samford & Denson has survived for morethan century because the partnership’s attorneys have been suc-cessful in representing clients, says John V. Denson II, thefounder’s grandson and a former circuit court judge.“We win cases and we provide good service,” he says.
Samford & Denson, which has had several names over the yearsdepending on the partners, was founded by Denson’s grandfather,Judge N.D. Denson. The Denson patriarch was a former mem-ber of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and his son John V.Denson joined him in the partnership. Another son, N.D.Denson Jr., began practice with the firm in 1914. Two grand-sons—Yetta Samford Jr. and John V. Denson II—joined the prac-tice in 1949 and 1960 respectively. Both are still active in the firm.
The Tatum & Tatum comprehensive general dentistry office wasfounded by Oscar Hilt Tatum after the first World War. His sons,Crawford Sr. and Hilt, both joined the practice. Hilt Tatum even-tually moved to Florida, but Crawford Sr.’s two sons, Crawford Jr.and Tim, followed their father into dentistry in the 1970s.
“There was a little lady named Inez Lowe who started with theirgrandfather when she was 16 and worked in the practice till shewas over 80,” recalls Sara Jane Tatum, Tim’s wife. “She worked forall three generations and is really a legend.”
Tim and Crawford learned more from their father than theydid in dental school, she notes. Crawford Sr. was a dentist inthe Army after World War II, and where he was posted an oralsurgeon was needed. He wasn’t an oral surgeon, but he learnedfast, studying on his own. The dental practice went on to dopioneering work in dentistry, Sara Jane says, and was one ofthe first in the country to offer dental implants.
Like Samford & Denson and Tatum & Tatum, Smith TBuilding Supply has survived because of family ties, a localfocus and an emphasis on service. In business since 1931, dur-ing the Great Depression, Smith T Building Supply is now runby founder Winston Smith T’s grandson, Dozier Smith T, pro-viding the same kind of one-on-one service. The family’s
unusual name comes from an ancestor who in the early 1800stired of having the common surname of “Smith.”
And then there’s the newcomer—Alabama Office Supply—inbusiness since 1946 and now having two stores, one inOpelika and one in Montgomery. The company has growninto one of Alabama’s largest independent dealers of office fur-niture and supplies, despite competition from national chainslike Office Depot, Office Max and Staples..
Alabama Office Supply was founded by Lucy and JudsonSalter Sr. with two partners, later becoming sole owners. Theirson-in-law, Harris Asbury, took over the business when LucySalter retired in the late 1960s. Their grandson, Wake Asbury, joined Alabama Office Supply in 1982 and took over man-agement in the late 1980s.

The Next Great Art Community By: Kate Asbury Larkin
Arts & Entertainment
There is no doubt new life has been breathed into SouthRailroad Avenue in Historic Downtown Opelika andnow a trio of entrepreneurs is reviving the “other side of
the tracks.”
Cottonseed Studios is part of a two-block area that runs alongNorth Railroad Avenue on one side and First Avenue on theother that is being transformed to fill a gap in this little corner ofthe world.
“Our dream is to make this area into a cultural center for thearts,” explained Richard Patton, owner of the cotton warehouseproperties. “We want to offer a total cultural experience for artistsof all kinds to express themselves, share their talents and drawfamilies together to experience true art.”
Partners Richard Patton, Allison Wilmarth and Rob Slocomb areworking together to bring the world of art to downtown Opelika. “We have a great foundation in the East Alabama ArtsAssociation and with the new restaurants, taverns, shops and res-idences in downtown, we are already getting a lot of attention,”Slocomb said. “We want to take that a step further; a big step fur-ther, and make Opelika the place to come for music, theatre, andevery other art medium.”
Plans for Cottonseed Studios include coffee shops, a brewery anddistillery, restaurants, a watering hole, gift and art shops, busi-nesses, individual areas for artists to cultivate their talents andideas, and a state-of-the art sound stage, theatre and recordingstudio and for musicians and filmmakers.
“We already have a number of artists who are using the ware-house space to create, nurture and perfect their crafts,” Wilmarthsaid. “When artists really ‘get into’ a project they can sometimesstay for 24 or more hours and this area is the perfect place forthem to be for as long as they want to be here. We would evenlike to get to a point to offer artist-in-residence opportunities. There are so many possibilities and ideas; the potential for thisproject really has no limits.”
The Railyard of Cottonseed Studios already draws large crowdsfor bands that play during the week and on weekends. Patton hasbeen booking small bands for years and is glad to offer a uniquevenue for musicians and their fans.
“From local and regional to national names, we want to bring inbands, art shows, filmmakers, movies, and any other art medium,we want to bring it all to Opelika which in turn, will draw fans, followers and families to the area,” Patton said. “It’s a win-win forus, the artists, Opelika and the community as a whole.”
Recently, the movie Stuck stopped in Opelika as part of a 61-citytour and the producer was more than impressed with the com-munity.
“He called after the showing and told me Opelika was the high-light of the entire tour,” Wilmarth said. “He loved the atmos-phere, the people, the area, and just the overall experience. Wedoubled the number of viewers who attended in Birmingham, which validates the relevance of a small town. The whole Stuckproject was a huge endorsement for what we are doing and thereare many, many more events conducive to the space and thevision for the Cottonseed Studios.”
All artists begin with an idea and a dream and CottonseedStudios is no exception. However, to make this dream a reality,Patton, Wilmarth and Slocomb need more than paint brushes, guitars, or movie cameras; they need funding. The trio is writinggrants and working with business leaders, private investors, artistsand any other creative income resources to make Opelika thenext great arts community.

Opelika High School (OHS) through its varied fine artscurriculum has inspired students and parents to devel-op and nurture an appreciation for the arts. Through
programs that include theatre, chorus, guitar, art, and band everystudent at Opelika High School can find his or her place.
TheatreThe theatre department has thrived under the direction ofRevel Gholston who teaches beginning theatre, advanced the-atre, and creative writer’s workshop. His other classes includelighting and sound, along with set design and set movements.
The theatre department also hosts the District IV Trumbauercompetition every year. “Trumbauer is the ultimate opportuni-ty for our students to realize they are not alone. They get theexperience of performing in front of other teachers and direc-tors and critics.” Gholston said.
Upcoming productions include: The Fantasticks, Here’s ToYour Health (A Morality Play), Alice in Wonderland, andChicago.
In the spring Gholston and his students took on the challengeof Beauty and the Beast. Gholston said, “We had the largestcrowds ever. Approximately 4,000 people attended. There wereso many students involved in the music making, the set push-ing and pulling, the set painting, and of course, the acting. They all ultimately benefit from being a part of something big-ger than themselves.”
ChoralAllyson Petrone and Calvin Ellis, choir directors, offer a well-rounded approach to teaching their choral students.
“We don’t just focus on the performance. We work with theother fine arts’ instructors to allow our students the opportuni-ty to participate in theatre, band, and visual arts,” Petrone said.
“The Opelika City Board of Education strongly supports thearts. Because of this strong support, we have one of the finestchoral departments in the area. Our facilities are second tonone,” Petrone said.
One reason for the success of the high school choral program isthe strong Opelika Middle School (OMS) choral program andits director Tamera Garner.
“Building excitement is the key to becoming involved in anyprogram. That is my goal! I want my students to fall in lovewith the world of music and I want them to be and stay a partof it. I also believe that a feeder program is necessary to any suc-cessful high school program,” Garner said.
Art“Art is like learning a new language. Students must learn tocommunicate visually. Communication is pulled from liveexperiences. Through self expression students learn to deal withemotions and communications,” said Jeff Conway, OHS artteacher.
OHS art students have placed in every competition they haveentered. A high point for Conway and his students includethree Best of Shows for the State of Alabama.
Each Congressional District chooses one piece of student art tohang in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C. One ofConway’s students has received this honor for the past six years.
“I am one of the lucky teachers who get to work with studentsfor multiple years, sometimes four. A bond develops. I learntheir strengths and am able to push them in the directionswhere they can find success,” Conway said.
Art students are moving into their new classrooms in the fall Adisplay area for showcasing student art work has been added.Rooms are more spacious with an outdoor venue. State of theart computers are available, along with a new kiln and plenty ofnatural lighting. “The opportunities are only limited by ourimaginations,” Conway said.
GuitarPatrick Bruce teaches three levels of guitar classes, with approx-imately 100 students taking guitar.
The guitar students have two official concerts each year.According to Bruce, the one in the fall is a themed concert inwhich students research music genres or certain decades ofmusic. Students then form bands, rehearse, and put on a showthat is open to the community. The second concert is alwaysin May and is a “free for all.” Bruce adds, “Students pick musicthey are interested in and put on a show.”
“Guitar class is unique due to the diversity of musical tastes and
talents. We pride ourselves on creating a learning environmentthat is safe and fun,” Bruce said.
BandThe Opelika band program is a source of pride for the OpelikaCity School System, its students, as well as parents and theentire community. The band maintains 20% of the studentpopulation, which is almost 350 students, in grades 7-12.
The marching band, also known as “The Spirit of the South,”performs at every football game and competes at marchingcompetitions throughout the year. The band also has a visualensemble made up of majorettes, color guard, and the“Showstoppers” kickline.
Jason Smith’s goal as band director is to maintain the success ofthe band program, as well as upstart new competitive outletsfor the students. “Using the indoor percussion and winterguard programs in a competitive Southeastern Color GuardAssociation has allowed students in the percussion and visualensemble sections of the band improve skills for the entire bandprogram,” Smith said.
The OMS bands under Rick Holland’s direction have receivedsuperior rankings at every contest, festival, and judged per-formance. “Because of Holland’s love and dedication to theyoung musicians, the high school maintains a solid reputationas a band program,” Smith said.
“The Opelika band program is a total program, consisting ofmany different opportunities for students to excel musically, todevelop discipline and pride, and to be a part of a team effort,”Smith said. o

Celebrating its 27th season with stellar productions, the Arts Association of East Alabama PerformanceSeries brings the best in music, theatre and dance to
the community. Six to eight major shows featuring nationaland international touring productions, which are generallyonly available in larger metropolitan areas, are presented eachyear at the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts.
Phillip Preston, director, reflects on the early years and growthof the Series. The Arts Association began with the SpringFestival Concert Series years earlier but was limited to produc-tions suitable for church sanctuaries. “When the school boarddecided to build the Performing Arts Center as a dual facilityto serve the high school and community as theater space,”remembers Preston, “it opened up many possibilities.” TheArts Association was asked to create a new concert series, which established the working relationship with the cityschool system.
The Series opened in September 1987 with the AlabamaSymphony Orchestra. Each season has featured a variety ofperformances including Broadway tours, symphony orches-tras, opera companies and entertainers. Popular performancesover the past two decades include the Bolshoi Symphony, theWarsaw Philharmonic, New York City Opera, MadameButterfly, Oklahoma, Cinderella, Chicago, Kiss Me Kate, 5Browns, The Sound of Music, Big River, Wynton Marsalis,Crazy For You, among many others.
“The guiding spirit behind the Series is finding the best events
to represent each of the major areas of the arts in terms ofmusic, theater and dance with variety within those areas, andthen looking at what is available coming in and out of theregion,” Preston explains. “We are trying to develop program-ming within a certain comfort zone of familiarity but withsome cutting edge performances as well.” East Alabama Artscatches productions moving through Atlanta, Birmingham aswell as cities in Florida, Louisiana, Texas and other areas asthey head to points east/west, north/south on their nationaltours.
Preston is involved in securing performances one to three yearsahead. “We are scouting for a combination of events with aparticular variety that will work for us, and we are still guidedby that same spirit of innovation as the Performance Series hasevolved through nearly three decades now. Making sure of thequality, the variety, and a sense of discovery and willingness tochallenge preconceived notions within the programming, isparamount to a successful venture.”
“Newcomers don’t expect to find a full fledge theater facility ina small town,” says Preston. “It is fun to see people’s reactions, especially if they moved here from larger areas. They thinkthey are moving into a cultural desert until they learn aboutour Series. We are doing a lot on the same level as larger citiesat much reduced prices.”
A hallmark of the Series has been the level of community sup-port with subscribers and contributors. Since some events arepurchased two or three years ahead, the AAEA has to make
contractual commitments while the tours are still beingformed. “The commitment of a large-scale subscriber base isthe only way this works,” states Preston, “along with the sup-port of business sponsors who make financial and service con-tributions.
“Whether you are returning for the 27th Performance Seriesseason or are new to the East Alabama Arts family, welcome tothe 2013-2014 lineup of Broadway and All That Jazz!” addsPreston. As always, the signature variety and quality of everyPerformance Series event is front and center – from MammaMia and all things ABBA; to the based-on-a-true-story of raceand forbidden love in Memphis; to the wacky and wonderfulfamily values of the Addams Family.
“Just remember, though, as exciting as all that is, you are thebiggest star at every event, every season. Hosting national-tourBroadway shows and world-class performing arts ensembles
and artists right here in our own community living room atthe Opelika Center for the Performing Arts simply can’t hap-pen in a void. So you, as part of our remarkably committedsubscriber and contributor network of citizens and businessesacross East Alabama, are the stars of the arts that fill that voidseason after season.”
For tickets to the Performance Series, contact the East AlabamaArts office located in the historic Opelika Depot at 1032 SouthRailroad Avenue; or purchase online by visiting www.eastalaba-maarts.org Office hours are Monday through Friday from 10a.m. until 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For general informationcall 334-749-8105.

Parish Nurses Educate and Promote Healthy Lifestyles By: Donna Williamson
Worship
East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) subsidizes aparish nurse program in area churches and in the com-munity. According to Peggy Hansen, Parish Nurse
Coordinator, “We have 24 parish nurses that are in 21 differ-ent area churches. Each year, this program provides care, sup-port, and health education for approximately 6,000 people inour communities.”
Parish nurses are also instrumental in providing free healthscreens and health education to the community at the DardenWellness Center in Opelika. The EAMC parish nurses, theAuburn University School of Nursing, and the J. W. DardenFoundation work together to provide these free screenings.Hansen said, “Our mission is to promote healthy lifestyles, toprovide health screenings and education, with the goal ofreducing health care costs and improving the health of thosein the community.”
The Darden Wellness Clinic is located in the historic DardenHouse at 1323 Auburn Street in Opelika. This is the restoredhome of Dr. J. W. Darden, the area’s first African-Americanphysician who practiced here in the early 20th century. Today, the house serves as the Darden Wellness Center, which isappropriate since Dr. Darden actually established a small clinic there.
According to Hansen, approximately 400 clients visited theDarden Wellness Center in 2012. More than 100 of thoseseen had no insurance of any kind. Thirty-one student nursesfrom the Auburn University School of Nursing assisted withweekly Wednesday morning (9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon)
health screenings and education. The parish nurse program atEAMC contributes 150 hours overseeing the Wednesdaymorning program.
This program benefits uninsured or underinsured seniors andothers who have limited resources and income. EAMC start-ed the parish nurse program as a way for EAMC nurses to giveback to the community. The main objective is to touch livesand improve overall health. “I believe this is preventative med-icine at its best,” Hansen said.
The EAMC parish nurses also provide blood pressure screeningsseveral times a month at the community market, a division ofthe East Alabama Food Bank, the food pantry at one of the area’slargest churches, and at local barber and beauty shops.
Parish nursing, also known as faith community nursing, is aninternationally recognized area of nursing practice. “We areregistered nurses with additional training as parish nurses. Weaddress health from a whole perspective. That is to say, we pro-mote body, mind, and spiritual health,” Hansen said.
