Our Literary Award honoree, Robert K. Massie, opened our eyes to the extravagant and tragic world of Imperial Russia, revealing the reality of life

behind the velvet curtain that shielded the Emperors, Tsars and their families and hid enlightened despots, egg-sized diamonds, intrigue, betrayal and murder. The winning bidders of this trip to St. Petersburg, Russia will receive 2 airline tickets, seven nights at the Grand Hotel Europe, a tour of the National Library of Russia which was founded by Catherine the Great and considered one of the major libraries of the world, and a look into a world of incredible power that disappeared in an instant.

At the 5-star Grand Hotel Europe you will get a true sense of the rich history of the city, as your hotel is situated in the heart of St. Petersburg and in walking distance of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the State Russian Museum and Kazan Cathedral. Also nearby is the Palace Square. Daily breakfast is included.

Enjoy a private 3-hour tour of the Hermitage Museum, one of the largest and oldest museums in the world founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great. The tour includes visits to the reception halls of the Winter Palace, a place where tsars once resided, as well as a the tour of the art gallery where you will enjoy masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, Rembrandt, French Impressionists, Picasso, Van Gogh among many others.

Learn all about the National Library of Russia before your trip with the beautiful coffee table book, The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World by Jacques Bosser.

Details: Trip includes airfare for two, seven nights and daily breakfast at the Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg, a tour of the National Library of Russia, and a 3-hour tour of the Hermitage Museum.

50 years ago, John Lewis stood before an estimated quarter-million people at the March on Washington and said, “To those who have said to be patient

and wait – we must say that we cannot be patient. We do not want our freedom gradually. But we want to be free now.” The youngest speaker of the day, John Lewis joined Martin Luther King in creating the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of the United States.

Today, Congressman Lewis is recognized as one of the “Big Six” leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and the last remaining speaker from the March. Listen to Congressman Lewis’ first-hand account of the Civil Rights Movement as he guides you and one other on a tour of the National Mall. Walk alongside the civil rights icon as

he reminisces about the events of August 19, 1963, his experience as President of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and his interactions with Martin Luther King, Asa Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, Whitney Young, Roy Wilkins and others principles of the March on Washington movement.

Stay for two nights at the historic Willard Intercontinental, a charming hotel where guest Martin Luther King finished his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Enjoy a mint julep poured by mixologist and cocktail historian Jim Hewes at the Willard’s Round Robin Bar and let the 150-year old walls talk as Mr. Hewes gives you a history lesson on the infamous political deals and social happenings that occurred at Round Robin since the days of Abraham Lincoln.

The winner of this package will receive a copy of Congressman Lewis’ newly released graphic novel, March, a vibrant first-hand account of his lifelong struggle for civil and human rights as well as the birth of the Nashville Student Movement and historic sit-ins that took place on 5th avenue.

Also included in this package is March, a hand-made limited edition intaglio print hand-signed by Congressman Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nathan Powell (artist). The artwork is from the inside cover of Congressman Lewis’ graphic novel.

Details: Date to be mutually agreed upon between donors and winner.

It has been said that “New York is simply a distillation of the United States, the most

of everything, the conclusive proof that there is an American civilization, casual, intellectual, subtle, effective and devastatingly witty.”

Funny enough, you’ll find all that in this trip to the Big Apple — and more!

Start with lunch with Jon Meacham at the Century Association on West 43rd Street. Established in 1847 by William Cullen Bryant and friends as a club to promote interest in the fine arts and literature, the Century’s membership book reads as a Who’s Who of literature and the arts. Break bread with the upper crust in the Club’s gorgeous library dining room and enjoy the exhibit of art by living Centurions hanging nearby.

Perk up with a with a behind the scenes visit to the “green room” of MSNBC’s hit show Morning Joe — you’ll watch the day’s headlines come to life as the pundits rush in and out.

Your headquarters for 2 nights will be the newly renovated Loews Regency Hotel where all the benefits of Midtown Manhattan are at your fingertips, with a Park Avenue address. The reimagined Loews Regency Hotel combines contemporary design, form and function with 50 years of expertise.

You won’t go hungry with dinner for two at Del Posto, 2013 James Beard Award winner for Outstanding Service. You will sip exquisite wines selected by Tom Black while savoring the amazing dishes of Joe Bastianich, Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali.

Hotel certificate to be used after January 31, 2014. Dates for Morning Joe show and lunch at the Century Association to be mutually agreed upon by donor and winner. Dinner at Del Posto subject to availability.

6Be among the first to experience this new urban

hideout, The 404 Hotel and Kitchen, which opened this fall as a five-room boutique hotel and restaurant in the uber chic Gulch. Designed to offer an alternative to giant or mid-size hotels, The 404 will offer what developer Mark Banks calls “invisible service” led by an onsite manager, with the goal of making guests feel less like tourists and more immersed in the city. A stay at The 404 will be perfect for anyone who is looking for a getaway to something a little different, a little more unique, in a booming part of town, with elegant accommodations — a stay without too much fuss at the center of what’s happening in Nashville.

Dinner for four will not disappoint. Chef Matt Bolus has previously served in chef positions at Flyte and Watermark in Nashville and FIG in Charleston. At The 404 Kitchen, Chef Bolus will be offering a modern take on classic European cuisine, with a menu determined by available produce and provisions from local farms, as well as herbs grown on the restaurant’s rooftop garden. After your fantastic dinner, retire to the perfectly appointed hotel rooms for a night in the city.

Details: This package includes dinner for four (alcohol not included) and two rooms for one night. Dinner and stay must be used the same night and used before November 9, 2014.

Date to be mutually agreed upon between donor and winner and subject to availability. Blackout dates include Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and federal holiday weekends.

Catherine the Great changed the loosely knit, poorly

governed peoples of Russia, into a bona fide Empire.

A woman of great talent, great intelligence and ambition, Catherine brought the concept of Enlightenment to a world of serfs and uneducated nobility.

She would have made good use of the literary trove of books about trends that influence our

behavior, leadership and business style that the Belmont University Center for Executive Education has donated to this year’s auction.

The gift includes two tickets to the Belmont Executive Learning Network Fall Leadership Breakfast with guest speaker Dan Airely, author of Predictably Irrational and the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, as he explores the forces that influence behavior. The Fall Leadership Breakfast will take place at the Curb Event Center on December 5th, 2013.

Ken Burns has told the stories of Prohibition, Baseball, and

the Civil War.

Now America’s storyteller will cast his keen eye — and ear — to pick up the music that most closely mirrors America’s loves and losses. To tell the story of Country Music, Burns will show us the poignant, mournful, and rowdy world it has created in song.

His project won’t be released until 2015, but you can get a peek at his research when you take a once-in-a-lifetime seat at the table as he interviews Margaret Ann Robinson about her memories of how the Grand Ole Opry came to be such a force in this community and the world.

In 1925 the National Life and Accident Insurance Company built a radio station as a public service to the local community with the hope that the new medium could advertise insurance policies. It did so much more as it became a bond between people scattered around the country making them laugh, cry — and sing along.

You and nine friends (total of 10) can be part of the conversation around the dinner table at Margaret Ann’s home as she reminisces about her father’s role in the celebration of our lives in song.

John Updike, who loved golf almost as much as he loved words, would have wanted to

be a part of this festive week with friends on the Florida Golf Coast. At Villa Siena you can do just that. The unmatched natural beauty of adjacent Deer Lake State Park, morning sunrises and evening sunsets punctuate this stretch of beach.

The adjacent sugary white sand and crystal clear waters make the perfect backdrop for the style and elegance of what is an extraordinary setting for a fun time and

plenty of space for twelve happy guests, whatever their ages. The spacious villa features artistic treasures, a chef ’s kitchen, private pool and splendid wide open porches.
