A Letter From Our President Dear Sisters, Family and Friends, For those whom I have not had the opportunity to meet, my name is Ellen Thompson and I am the President of our Eta Nu Chapter. I feel so blessed to be leading this group of 160 inspiring, motivated, and talented young women. Our young chapter has grown exponentially since its installment in 2009. We have established and carried on our own chapter's traditions while maintaining the values that every Kappa strives to live by and aspire towards. Kappa Kappa Gamma is known nationally for its values of friendship, leadership, and scholarship; and it is through these values that our chapter has provided our sisters the opportunity to grow together as leaders and share in everyone's joys and successes of college. Thanks to each and every one of our members, our chapter has developed a strong presence in our Greek community through our close friendships and involvement with other organizations. Many of our members are also active participants in athletics, student government, honors societies, school ambassadors, orientation leaders, community services and many other clubs on campus. As President, I have the honor of encouraging, supporting, and leading the chapter and all chapter council officers throughout the year. As members of chapter council, we all work hard to uphold our chapter bylaws and demonstrate the values most important to us. Altogether, it is a very rewarding experience for me to watch the officers enthusiastically devote their time and energy to something that yields great success! The bond of Kappa Kappa Gamma is one unlike any other. The fraternity is like family, composed of Eta Nu and all 139 other chapters, all bound together by the ties of sisterhood and our Kappa pride. Our own chapter is made up of an incredible group of women who have come together through Kappa and have 143 years of fraternity history, traditions, and values to connect to our own Santa Clara community. A Letter From Our President Dear Sisters, Family and Friends,

For those whom I have not had the opportunity to meet, my name is Ellen Thompson and I am the President of our Eta Nu Chapter.

I am so proud to be an Eta Nu member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and I look forward to all of the chapter's future accomplishments.

We Strive For Academic Excellence

Kappa is known for placing a strong emphasis on academic success for each member. So far we have seen a lot of involvement in scholastic pursuits and achievement in our chapter over the past few quarters. In February we celebrated Academic Excellence Month by going over study tips, connecting with the career center, and promoting scholarship to one another. We honored seven women who received 4.0’s during fall term with little plaques recognizing their academic achievements. Eta Nu is made up of girls with a diversity of different majors and minors. This year we have created new groups within Google to facilitate a connection between girls in the same or similar majors. These groups were created with the hope of establishing more awareness of others Kappas within the majors/minors and to give them a more organized place to ask questions and give advice, rather than Facebook. We also had these groups meet at chapter one evening to talk in person about upcoming registration for next year’s classes. My committee and I have been working on various ideas this quarter to give more recognition to our amazing sisters who are excelling in their schoolwork. I am so proud of our Wise Owls for having an average GPA of 3.347 for winter quarter and I am looking forward to seeing their success continue!

Lucie Shore, Vice President of Academic Excellence

Our fabulous Kappa Kastle is as beautiful as ever and is one of the quaintest houses on the block! The chapter house serves as a living space for 18 girls (plus our amazing house mom) and is used for many different events and meetings for the entire chapter. It is open for girls of all ages to live in and we have filled it once again for the upcoming 2013-2014 academic school year! Some of the favorite pastimes for the current house girls include “Bachelor” TV viewing parties, frequent naps on the yellow couches, and spontaneous

midnight frozen yogurt runs. A sister can always find someone’s closet to raid or a shoulder to lean on at the Kastle, making it one of the best places to live for a Santa Clara Kappa.

In general, Kappa has great participation and visibility within the greek community, This last year we participated in Philanthropy events such as Alpha Phi Star Search, Kappa Alpha Theta Dodgeball, Delta Gamma Anchorsplash/Anchor Slam, Sigma Pi Volleyball and Sigma Chi Derby Days. Our Kappa Chapter has consistently shown support for the philanthropic efforts of those within the Greek community. As the Panhellenic Delegate for Eta Nu, I work mainly as a liaison between our chapter and the Santa Clara Panhellenic Council. Our goal as Chapter Council is to promote Greek unity along with a general “Go Greek” attitude through the implementation of programming which supports the mission of the National Panhellenic Conference. This year we have seen tremendous growth within the Santa Clara Panhellenic community with the addition of our newest sorority on campus, Alpha Delta Pi. This year, Panhellenic planned quite a few exciting events including a visit from a speaker with Girls Fight Back who spoke to the Panhellenic community about self-defense and personal safety. In the Winter, Panhellenic held a Philanthropy event open to all SCU students called “The Greek Gatsby” in which Greek and non-Greek members dressed up in their best 1920’s attire for a night of card games and jazz music. All proceeds went to Circle of Sisterhood, an organization which raises awareness about the oppression of women around the world. In the Spring we successfully celebrated our second annual Greek Week which continued to raise money for this organization.

The Standards Committee focuses on the spirit and morale of the chapter by planning fun sisterhoods to get to know one another and facilitate bonding. We started this year off with a surprise beach day in Capitola during a scheduled recruitment workshop. It was a fun way to reconnect after a summer apart and an even better way to end summer! We ended Fall Quarter with a relaxing sisterhood. A representative from Mary Kay pampered us with facials and painted our nails. In the winter we did a work out class that included Zumba and some core exercises. Our Spring quarter sisterhood was at the Rose Gardens, which included fun games for girls to get to know each other better and ended with a water balloon fight. In addition to sisterhoods, the Standards committee also plans smaller events like making elastic hair-ties that we sold at Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society. We also provide cookies and coffee in the library to help reenergize

our members during finals week! Each week, one girl in nominated to receive our “supportive sister bra”. This is awarded to girls who have been especially sisterly or who have gone above and beyond in helping the chapter.

Showing the New Members What We’re All About!

I am so thrilled to be serving as Marshal this year! My duties include organizing our weekly chapter meetings and reviewing the fraternity’s history and rituals with the chapter. I also plan the I-Week activities that lead up to the day of initiation. This year Eta Nu was proud to welcome our Zeta Class! Initiation was held at the Berkeley Pi Deuteron Chapter house. The entire chapter slept over at the Berkeley house and we had a blast getting ready for initiation and reflecting on our sisterhood. Having our Zeta Class initiated at Berkeley was especially special for the Gamma Class seniors because they were also initiated at the Berkeley house as freshmen. We can't wait to meet the fabulous women who will be our Eta class!

Ellie McQueston, Marshal

!

As New Member Chair, I am in charge of planning our Bid Day activity as well as teaching our newest members all about Kappa Kappa Gamma and our Eta Nu Chapter! I am currently working on various festivities to welcome the new members as well organizing the new member retreat. Although Eta Nu is four years young, our chapter is rapidly expanding! We will continue our Owl Pals program next year, which helps the girls to get acquainted

with their sisters from different classes. Now that our alumni group is also growing, we are planning on getting them involved in the new member period so the girls can better see the larger picture of what Kappa has to offer! The bonds and friendships that are formed during our college years don’t end when we graduate; Kappa Kappa Gamma is forever. Anna Garvey, New Member Chairman

Preparing Our Seniors

As Education Chairman, I work to help to educate the women of our chapter by enhancing membership and increasing awareness of Kappa’s purposes and ideals. I am responsible for coordinating the Senior Programming Events, among other chapter events such as Founder’s Day and Senior Appreciation. Senior Programming is designed to help transition senior members of Kappa Kappa Gamma from the Kappa world into the working world. This is done through a series of speakers that align with Kappa’s Pathways. During Winter Quarter, the seniors welcomed a speaker who introduced healthy eating habits and ways to clean up diets. In the Spring Quarter, women from the greater Santa Clara area came to speak about work appropriate makeup and fragrance, how to be an advocate for themselves when it comes to promotions, relationships, housing, etc. A business civility coach also visited to help seniors with work appropriate dress code and how to handle situations with tact and grace. In addition to Senior Programming, a mixer involving past and future girls

traveling abroad in the works. We have a busy quarter ahead!

Keeping Our Kappas Safe

THE KEY FACTS Founded: October 13, 1870 (over 142 years ago!) Found ing Chapter : Monmouth College (Monmouth, Illinois) Colors: Dark Blue and Light Blue Symbols: Key, Fleur de Lis, Owl F lower : Iris Jewel : Sapphire (recognized as a symbol of truth, sincerity and constancy) Phi lanthropy : Reading is Fundamental Number of Ac t ive Chapters: 140 (newest chapter at Chapman University!) Number of Ac t ive Members: over 250,000 lovely women

The Risk Management Committee focuses on the safety and security of the members of Eta Nu in every event we hold and throughout the year in general. My position includes arranging activities with our lovely event chair, Megan Kraus, and planning ahead with venues regarding security and chaperones. Our two main events that required risk

management planning during Winter Quarter included Kappa Karaoke (one of our philanthropy events) and Sapphire Ball (our formal dance). This was our first year of putting on Kappa Karaoke and everyone seemed to have a great (and safe) time! Spring quarter was packed with Kappa activities. Within two weeks, we held three exciting events. As a fun escape from midterms, I helped plan an American themed date dash. It was announced at our Monday night chapter and the girls had roughly 2 hours to find a date or friend to bring to the date dash later that evening. It was a great way to get the girls excited for Semi-Formal, which was a week and a half later. Kappa Kaliente was an incredible Semi-Formal that ran smoothly for both security and chaperones. Our new Key Sister program, which ensures that each girl volunteers to help at an event before she graduates, truly does wonders to remind us to keep it kappa klassy. To wrap up spring quarter, we held our annual philanthropy, Kappa Karnival. I had multiple teams tell me how it is their favorite sorority event and how they thought it was very well done. I am so proud of all of Eta Nu for always remembering that they are not only representing themselves, but the entire chapter. Libby Pettit, Risk Management Chairman

Philanthropy is one of the many things that helps create our wonderful Greek community here at Santa Clara University. All year long we find ourselves involved in many different philanthropy events put on by all the Greek chapters. This was an especially exciting year for our chapter because January marked our first annual Kappa Karaoke! The event involved all Greek and non-Greek students of the Santa Clara community. Teams of up to five people were able to choose a song of their choice to perform. It was a very fun night filled with laugher and some amazing talent. We raised close to $1,000 that went towards the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. It was a great event that we look forward to continuing in the future! Not only did we have Kappa Karaoke in the winter but we also had our annual Reading Is Fundamental event in March. RIF is the largest children’s nonprofit organization in the United States and intends to inspire young children and encourage the importance of reading, especially in underprivileged areas. After collecting over 200 books, 20 girls visited Briarwood Elementary School at the beginning of March on Dr. Seuss day and read to three 1st grade classrooms. Since we visited the school on Dr. Seuss Day, we constructed and decorated Dr. Seuss hats and read Dr. Seuss books. With the generous snack donation from the Santa Clara Alumnae Association we also got to share snack time with the students, which they greatly enjoyed. Each student was able to take home 2 books and even after that we had a boxful of books that were donated to the school’s library. While Eta Nu is active in a variety of philanthropic aspects year-round, we find ourselves consistently busy during Spring

Quarter. We kicked off this quarter by supporting the American Cancer Society in our fundraising efforts for Relay for Life. Every year, we raise more money and have more participation from our chapter! We also participated in Sigma Chi’s Derby Days, Delta Gamma’s annual Anchor Splash and Sigma Pi Volleyball. And of course lets not forget our biggest philanthropy event of year… Kappa Karnival! On May 18th Eta Nu hosed our 3rd Annual Kappa Karnival at the American Legion. Proceeds were donated to the Lymelight Foundation, which is close to Eta Nu’s heart since Lyme disease has directly

Page 9: 2013 newsletter

affected on of our sister’s family’s. LymeLight providers grant to young people age 3-25 to assist them to financially afford Lyme disease treatment and medication while education the general population about the dangers of the disease. We were able to donate over $6,000 to the LymeLight Foundation, thanks to the support of all the student participants and donations from Kappa families! We couldn’t do it without your support!

The most anticipated time of the year is quickly approaching for the ladies of Eta Nu - Formal Membership Recruitment! The tireless efforts of our sisters last fall resulted in our most successful recruitment yet, as we brought home 51 amazing new members. We grew closer together as a chapter as we spent countless

hours a week holding reflective conversation and chanting our catchy Kappa songs from the front porch of the Kappa Kastle. This is perhaps why recruitment is such a special part of sorority life; it allows us to remember why we joined such an incredible organization and also allows us get to know other girls in the chapter who we have not spent much time with in the past. This past year, I have been laying the groundwork for our upcoming workshops and brainstorming programing ideas to relay all the critical details of recruitment in fun and interesting ways. We have had many sisters volunteer

their time to plan our decorations, write our recruitment song and choreograph the dance that goes along with the song! Given all of the continuous support Eta Nu receives from our members, alumnae, and advisors, we are sure to have yet another successful recruitment in Fall 2013!!

Getting Dressed Up

!

!

Kappa started the year off with an amazing fall semi, Kappa Korral. The Kastle’s backyard was transformed to put on our barn dance style semi. It was a fun start to the year and a hit among new members and actives alike. Our annual Sapphire Ball was held at the Decathlon Club once again. The night was full of music, dancing, and all of our beautiful Kappa girls all dressed up. The year’s formal events came to a close with Kappa Kaliente, our spring semi. The girls enjoyed the fiesta themed semi and danced the night away at Fahrenheit Restaurant and Lounge in San Jose.

Kappa has had multiple mixers this year with themes including “Tightest and Brightest”and “Toga” with Sigma Pi and “Super bowl” with Sigma Chi” to name a few. We were also lucky enough to continue our yearly tradition with the gentlemen of Sigma Pi and throw an amazing “Wedding Week”. The week started out with the boys proposing at chapter with ring pops and ended with a “wedding ceremony” and barbeque in the backyard of the Sigma Pi house.

This year, we planned a mixer for girls who have been or are planning on studying abroad. It was a great opportunity for older girls to share any advice they have and for the younger girls to ask those questions they still have. Overall, Kappa has had a successful year of events and I look forward to seeing what the next year has in store.

Since graduation, I have been living and working in San Francisco. I am currently a Production Coordinator at InnerWorkings, where I manage print production for Charlotte Russe. I work at the Charlotte Russe headquarters and it has been a great experience. San Francisco is full of other Bronco and Kappa alums. I don't think I have gone a day without running into someone I know at the gym, grocery store or just on my walk to the bus. While I do love this amazing city, I am heading south to Dallas in June. Through the amazing connections of

Kappa Kappa Gamma, I was able to find a roommate who I have already really "clicked" with. I am excited about the new adventures to come in my life and I know that Kappa will continue to play a large role in meeting new friends in a new city. Even after college, I am so happy that I amma!

I can’t believe it’s already been a full year since graduation! As an active member, I was registrar and president of Eta Nu from sophomore to senior year. This past year, I was fortunate enough to travel as one of the eight Leadership Consultants all over the United States to different Kappa chapters. I was able to visit with more than 25 different chapters and schools and although they each have their differences, I was floored by how many similarities our chapters have. From rural Georgia to sunny Santa Clara, we are all linked by something so much greater than just being in a sorority. We don’t just wear letters on a t-shirt, we strive to represent our ideal values and support one another to aspire to be something bigger. It really is a sisterhood. Kappa Kappa Gamma does a fantastic job of establishing connections both for active members and for the alumnae- making it truly a unique experience. It doesn’t just end after four years but instead extends well into your adult life. The support system you establish in college continues even after graduation and gets even bigger as you meet Kappa’s from other chapters and of all ages. Although I have made connections from all over with other sisters, Eta Nu will always have a special place in my heart. Whether it was chapter nights at St. Clare’s, my favorite 90’s themed date dash, or simply sitting on the Kappa Porch, the Eta Nu experience helped me become who I am today. I am so grateful for the sisters I have grown to know and wish the best to those who are only just beginning their dear Kappa Days.

My Klassy Kappa Sisters, I cannot believe it has been a year since I became an alumnae of Kappa Kappa Gamma Eta Nu. This past year I have started the long journey of the “real world,” and Kappa has been with me every step of the way! I am currently working in a small healthcare firm in the Bay Area and am really learning a lot about the industry. I have been able to grow quickly within the company and take on lots of different responsibilities. Being away this year has really allowed to me realize what a wonderful time I had at Santa Clara. From bachelor nights with some sisters to family dinners, I have realized how strong of a bond I formed with each girl. I cannot wait to see how much Eta Nu continues to grow! I miss you all dearly!

In Fall 2012, 27 Eta Nu Kappas studied abroad in places all over the world such as: Spain, China, London, Australia, Paris and Italy to name a few! We are very fortunate that Santa Clara University has an amazing study abroad program that provides students with all the resources and assistance that they might need. Studying abroad is such a great opportunity to travel, get to know another culture or language first-hand and learn about yourself…and having fellow Kappas around the world only enhances all the benefits of studying abroad! Many of our Kappas who studied abroad in Fall 2012 had a lot of fun meeting up and traveling with each other even though their programs were in different countries. This summer, a couple Kappas are continuing their abroad experience in India, working for an organization that fights against female infanticide and educates about gender equality. We are so excited that 21 of our girls are going abroad Fall 2013 but we will miss all of them so much!

In April, Eta Nu was very fortunate to be in close proximity to this year' Pi Province Meeting, which was hosted by the Beta Eta Deuteron Chapter at Stanford University. Chapters that are part of the Pi region, including Northern California, Oregon and Nevada, came together for this bi-annual convention. In total, ten chapters and twenty-one alumnae associations were able to attend the Pi Province Meeting at Stanford. Our Province Directors and Fraternity representatives planned outstanding workshops and interactive sessions specifically targeted at undergraduates, alumnae, advisers, and House Board Members. Pi Province was also very fortunate to have the previous Fraternity President, Denise Rugani, as the luncheon speaker and the current Fraternity President, Julie Leshay, as the Candlelight Banquet speaker. Our chapter received the Standards Award and the Most Improved Academics Award. This was an incredible experience for the thirty Eta Nu Members who were able to get to know so many different Kappas and see the larger picture of Kappa Kappa Gamma!

! Chapter Council is setting goals on how to make our chapter even better than it already is! One of my responsibilities as Vice President of Organization include calendaring these goals that we’ve created collectively as a chapter and balancing those goals with our chapter events. I also send out council officer announcements to the entire chapter twice a week to facilitate communication between our 170 lovely ladies. Any fraternity guest that comes to Eta Nu is given a schedule of events that outlines who they are meeting with, where they are meeting, and what the activity is. This year we had the pleasure of experiencing two visits from a Leadership Consultant. The acronym used by Kappa for our Leadership Consultant is ‘LC’ and they are women hired by Kappa headquarters to help guide our chapter to newer and better things. They help us reflect as a chapter on our strengths and areas for improvement that can really create a sisterhood and undergraduate experience full of lasting memories.

Convention 2012

This year we must unfortunately say goodbye to our fabulous house director of three years, Jessica. Jessica has been a student at Santa Clara University School of Law for the past three years, while helping run our beautiful Kastle. She has gone above and beyond to make sure all of the live-in girls have had a safe, clean, fun and well-equipped living space. She has played an integral role in making our little yellow house one of the easiest transitions from on-campus housing to off-campus by offering assistance with anything ranging from bill-paying to recipe tips. As she graduates this year, we wish her all the very best as she follows her dream of serving as a lieutenant junior grade for the Navy JAG Corp. You will be greatly missed, Jessica!

Alumnae volunteers are needed and appreciated here in Santa Clara. Alumnae can offer support by speaking at senior programming, supporting the Santa Clara Kappa House Board of Trustees, chapter philanthropies and guiding emerging leaders. This amazing group of collegiate women will continue to flourish with your support. Join in the fun! You are invited and encouraged to contact Traci Evans at [email protected] for more information.

Kappa Kappa Gamma volunteers serve in a variety of ways to help a chapter blossom and grow. All across the United States, Kappa advisers guide officers to use Fraternity Bylaws and Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct the business of running a chapter.

Mentoring discussions include a variety of topics such as year long planning, academics, service, philanthropy, invoices, budgets, insurance, contracts with venues, annual reports due to headquarters, delegating, teamwork and inspiring others to name just a few. The responsibility and decision making lies in the hands of the officers and all of the chapter members.

The Eta Nu Advisory Board members are truly proud of the academic and philanthropic accomplishments of these aspiring Kappa leaders here at Eta Nu in Santa Clara. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the past and present dedicated Eta Nu advisers for the countless

hours you have donated to this young chapter! You are key to success!
