The 2013 Sydney International Boat Show was the launch platform for the first Ocean Alexander to be imported into Australia for, well, we reckon it’s been decades. But the
prestigious pilothouse motoryachts -- and now megayachts -- are no strangers to our shores.
Marine-industry stalwart Geoff Lovett imported solid numbers of the 44, 48, 50 and 55 foot Ocean Alexanders
into the Gold Coast way back in the Eighties when this writer was cutting his boat-testing teeth. A quick search at
BoatPoint and boatsales reveals there are 11 such second-hand Ocean Alexanders for sale on our sites. That said,
the new boats are vastly different weapons, still largely pilothouse configurations, but with faster hulls, sharper lines,
the latest cruising kit and engineering. All manner of finishes are available to suit individual tastes, while each boat
boasts class-leading living spaces to sate likely liveaboard owners. Needless to say, the boats have got bigger, too.
Fast forward to the Sydney boat show where the baby in the range, the Ocean Alexander 72, made its
debut. Ocean Alexander’s CEO, Johnny Chueh, the son of the late founder of the brand Alex, appeared
enthusiastic about his Taiwanese boatyard’s future and its return here during our onboard catch up. In the interim,
there have been a lot of changes at Ocean Alexander. Some five or six years ago, Chueh decided to stop building
go-slow trawler-style boats and to focus entirely on bigger liveaboard cruisers.
The Motoryacht Series starts with this 72 Pilothouse and ranges through a 78, 82, 85 and 90 footer. The new
Megayacht Series include a 112, 120, 135 and 155. The 72 is made in a Shanghai yard, the 78-120 footers hail
from Taiwan, while the 120 footers and above are US-built in an alliance with Christensen Shipyards and
internationally acclaimed yacht designer Evan K. Marshall. The smaller Ocean Alexander boats have always had
hulls designed by renowned Ed Monk Jr, but all yards offer a degree of customization within the fixed and
structural boundaries of the relative model.
Annual production across the Ocean Alexander range is running at 20-24 boats a year, with the 90 footer the
most popular model.
The 72’s double-chine hull offers 22-23 knots top speed with 1150hp Caterpillar engines, we’re told, and long-
range legs of around 4000nm at eight knots with the stabilizers operational. There are three saloon layout options
and quite some inventory for serious cruising including hydraulic thrusters and stabilizers as standard. There’s also
a degree of in-built redundancy in the boat’s systems.

We were told the 72’s LED lights are the same as you will find in the Airbus 380, that there are broad options
with granite and marble counters, as many as 300,000 permutations in indoor finishes and soft furnishings, a
painted hull using Alexseal preferred by Feadship, and American sizing throughout. The 72’s pilothouse is
especially big, as is the full-beam stateroom with private off-saloon access, a 'Californian king' bed, and near full-
width en suite that is just the biggest we have ever seen in a 72 footer. Yet the pilothouse, with dinette and galley
with domestic appliances, rules in the living spaces, while the stellar bar in the flying bridge is akin to something
you’d see on a 100-footer with a waiter whizzing up cocktails. Sadly, they one of few aftermarket items you’ll need
to source and sauce.
As for construction, Chueh takes a relatively conservative view and won’t move key aluminium I-beams, doesn’t
like glass-on-glass opening ports (hence their absence in the stateroom), and uses solid GRP for hull layups,
sometimes with Kevlar reinforcing. "Increasingly, the yachting industry is adopting exotic materials and even
aerospace materials. Despite their 'sex appeal', other industries' applications may not really be desirable or even
applicable for use in pleasure yachts. We will never abandon sound engineering principles in a misleading search for
the latest fad or 'high-tech' solution," Chueh says on the Ocean Alexander website, where there’s plenty more to
read about the engineering.
The 72’s arrival here is due to a new distribution deal with Grand Banks dealers. Where GBs end, or near
enough with the 76 Aleutian, OAs take off. Hank Compton from Grand Banks Australia is thrilled to be
representing both brands at his Hope Island offices.

2013 WEST COASTThe Ocean Alexander
Marine Yacht Sales 2013 Rendezvous was held in beautiful Roche Harbor, WA, this year on the weekend of
June 21st-22nd. This year’s event was one of our most successful to date. We had 120 attendees who came on 40 different vessels. The large
number of attendees paired with perfect weather created a great atmosphere for this 1920’s themed weekend. The Ocean Alexander staff arrived early
Thursday morning to set up for the busy weekend events.
The events began bright and early Friday, June 21st, with a champagne breakfast hosted by MTU. Directly following breakfast was a fascinating
seminar led by Ryan Parker and Aaron Smith from S3Maritime. This seminar covered the latest in boating technology and electronics. At 1 pm, Chef Bill
Shaw from Roche Harbor hosted a cooking class with the theme “oysters”.
The annual Dinghy Parade followed where attendees
decorated their dinghies along with the theme of 1920’s or
Speakeasy. We had a great turnout this year for the parade and got to see some great decorations as well as creative costumes. Attendees paraded
their dinghies around Roche Harbor while answering trivia questions to win prizes.
A Southern themed dinner was held later Friday followed
by an after-hours secret cocktail party. The Speakeasy, named Alexander was a cocktail party hosted by Mischief Distillery out of the Fremont
neighborhood of Seattle, WA. Attendees had to give the secret password to enter Alexander’s, which was located on the fly bridge of our brand new 2014
85’ Ocean Alexander. Saturday, June 22nd started
with a champagne breakfast, hosted by Sea Recovery. Following breakfast was a
seminar by the Naval Architect Greg Marshall. He discussed the process of designing a yacht, specifically the 112’ Ocean Alexander.
At 11 am a very useful first aid seminar was held by the knowledgeable Ryan Davis and
Attendees were greeted by Ashley at the registration desk before grabbing a bite from the MTU sponsored champagne breakfast.

Art Cole. Attendees learned how to react to different life threatening situations and how to be prepared.
The infamous ladies only
boat handling seminar by Captain Niel Steenkamp was held at 1 pm, hosted by Guyer Boatworks, while the men took the 43’ Tiara Open for a sea trial
around Roche Harbor at the same time. Both events were full of laughs and useful information.
These two tours was
followed by golf-chipping contest hosted by Philbrook’s Boatyard, where attendees had the chance to “aim at their broker”. The object of each
round was to hit a broker who
was in a dinghy just off the dock. At 4 pm, three local Northwest distilleries held tastings for attendees to enjoy.
The final event was the
themed dinner Saturday night. The Ocean Alexander brokers, along with the help of three actors, a tap dancer, and a pianist put on a show and also
gave a chance for attendees to participate. Everyone dressed to impress in their 1920’s themed outfits and dinner included an impressive variety designed to
please everyone’s palate. Our 2013 Rendezvous was a
huge success this year. We hope to see everyone again next year along with even more attendees!

Island. Ocean Alexander held its presence in a BIG way again this year displaying 6 Motor Yachts in the show. Ranging from our new 90’ Ocean

2013 SUMMER This has been a record setting summer for Ocean Alexander. From May to September, a total of NINE new Ocean Alexander yachts were
sold. The sales were kicked off by Niel Steenkamp from the Ocean Alexander Seattle office. He successfully completed the
sales of a new Ocean Alexander 82 Cockpit MY and the new owners have plans for cruising along the US west coast this summer.
Chris June and Jeff Oliver from the Ocean Alexander Florida office worked together to complete the sale and
delivery of a new Ocean Alexander 85 MY. The 26 meter yacht was listed at $5,495,000 and this new yacht will remain in South Florida.
Then, Kevin McCarthy from the same Florida office, finalized the sale of a new Ocean Alexander 90 MY. The 27.8 meter yacht was listed at
$7,600,000 and was purchased by an existing Ocean Alexander owner who desired larger accommodations and increased cruising capabilities.
Not to let Florida pass them by, Niel from Seattle, sold yet another new yacht, the Ocean Alexander 90 Skylounge
Motor Yacht in Newport Beach, California. This new 90 continues to be a leading seller for Ocean Alexander in this segment.
An outside broker, Lon McClosky, of The Marine Group in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida sold a new Ocean Alexander 82 Cockpit Motor Yacht. This sale
of this extraordinary 25 meter yacht was the result of a successful collaboration between The Marine Group and Ocean Alexander of Florida.
September brought four additional sales. Ray Prokorym from Ocean Alexander’s Seattle office successfully completed the transaction for the sale of
the new Ocean Alexander 78 Skylounge Motoryacht. This new 2014 78 Ocean Alexander will be on display at the Seattle Boats Afloat Show starting
September 11th and ending on the 15th. Louis Dvorak from Ocean Alexander’s Ft. Lauderdale office also sold a
new 2014 78 Ocean Alexander Motoryacht. This version was ordered with an open bridge

SALES REVIEWwith enclosures that allows for use in all climates. The owners plan to take this 78 on a maiden voyage and return in time to show her at the upcoming Ft.
Lauderdale International Boat Show with the Ocean Alexander display. Afterwards, the yacht will be kept in South Florida for the long term.
Kevin McCarthy from the same Florida office sold a new 2014 72 Ocean Alexander Pilothouse yacht. This was a custom order by a previous
Ocean Alexander owner. They’ve owned several yachts by various manufacturers and when it was time to build their own, they decided to order a 72
to suit their needs. The
redesigned master suite, crew’s quarter, and spacious galley were just a few of the details that appealed to the new owners.
Lastly, Jeff Oliver from the Florida office, sold a new 2014 72 Ocean Alexander Pilothouse yacht as well. This new 72 was also sold to a
former Ocean Alexander owner. He previously owned an Ocean Alexander 51, moved up to a 62, and will now own the new 72. He plans to use the yacht in the
Bahamas and South Florida for most of the year and take it up to the Northeast for the summers. While both coasts were
busy with the sale of the new
yachts, the brokerage side was also keeping up. In addition to the yachts mentioned above, the West Coast locations also sold a new 2013 36 Tiara Open as well
as 10 brokerage boats ranging from 36' to 87'. The Ft. Lauderdale office did just as well with 10 brokerage sales of yachts from 38' up to 85'.
We currently have 43 brokerage boats available for sale. For more information on sales and events updates, please "Like" us on Facebook at
