Dear Friends,Your support matters. Thanks to you, more children in our community found a lifelong family of their own in 2013.
You helped give children a stable foundation and a chance to heal. When children have a permanent home and a forever family, their chances for success in life increase dramatically.
You helped children move from at-risk to at-home. In 2013, with your support, 83 children from foster care joined an Amara adoptive family. And 35 children joined an adoptive family with their brother or sister.
You provided crucial support for foster and adoptive families. Thank you for investing in Amara’s efforts to find, educate, prepare and support more families to adopt children who have experienced neglect or abuse.
Supporting families is at the core of what we do. Through our pregnancy and parenting counseling, we are able to provide compassionate counseling and support so that women and their partners can make informed decisions when faced with a pregnancy that may not have been anticipated. Last year we had the privilege of supporting Sara, who — through counseling — came to the realization that she was able to parent her child. Counseling also helped to facilitate communication with the baby’s father. Today, the couple is successfully co-parenting their baby and recently expressed to their Amara social worker, “We are doing so well. It would never have happened without you, thank you for everything!”
Every child deserves a safe, loving family, forever. Because of your support, Kelvin, Erin, Lucas, Lexi, Alex and Max found theirs. I hope you enjoy reading about their journeys “home” in 2013.
And thank you for making their stability and success your priority.
Warm regards,
John Morse Tony Stewart Executive Director Board President
Amara Services Building strong families since 1921
Adoption Amara’s primary focus is finding adoptive homes for children in foster care.
Foster Care Amara partners with foster parents who provide temporary care to children who need a safe, stable home.
Pregnancy Counseling Amara offers free, non-judgmental options counseling to birth parents facing an unplanned pregnancy.
Kelvin and KarenFrom age 6 to 8, Kelvin was moved in — and out of — four different homes. And, through no fault of his own, was separated from his four sisters who entered foster care at the same time.
Our Generous Friends in 2013Our sincere thanks to the many individuals, foundations and corporations who supported Amara with a financial gift in 2013. With your generosity, we are making strides toward our vision of
“A Home for Every Child.”
Karen came to Amara with love to give. She chose foster-adoption to grow her family. On April 19, 2013, Kelvin’s adoption was finalized and they became a forever family.
“Every now and then, little magic moments happen that are like guideposts and starlight to help keep us going in a positive direction on this journey. One of those shining stars happened this past Mother’s Day. Kelvin’s gift was a locket with his picture on it. In the picture he’s holding a sign
that says ‘You rock.’ When I put on this little love locket, I felt claimed. Like he was claiming me as his mom — to him and to me and to the rest of the world. He is very adamant that I wear it. Every day. I am proud to do it. Being on this journey with Kelvin and witnessing his capacity for ever expansive love has been an honor. Being encircled by this love — symbolized by the necklace around my neck. Best Mother’s Day Ever.”
– Karen, Amara mom

Erin, Dan, Kyle and Lucas
For the first five years of her life, Erin lived in and out of homelessness and moved frequently with her little brother Lucas. In a single year, Erin attended four different schools. When she and Lucas entered foster care, their future was uncertain.
2 | Amara: A Home for Every Child
Kyle and Dan dreamed of becoming parents and came to Amara to grow their family through adoption. In March 2012, they welcomed Erin and Lucas into their home. Fourteen months later, on May 24, 2013, Lucas and Erin’s adoptions were finalized, ensuring these siblings would grow up together.
“By opening our hearts to taking more than one child, we knew that we could help keep children together who may have had only each other for support.”

“When you see children who know that they are precious to the people around them, they look different. Our children didn’t have that look when we first met them. They do now, and I expect you can see it just as well as we can. That’s when you know that you aren’t just taking care of these kids, you have become their parents.”

One Friday, Trina and Jacob received a call from their Amara caseworker and learned about Lexi, Alex and Max. Knowing very little about the children, or what the future might bring, they welcomed them home — in time for dinner! Jacob and Trina knew the importance of keeping siblings together and were willing to provide a safe, temporary home or be their forever family. Whatever they needed.
Alex, Jacob, Max, Lexi and Trina
On November 22, 2013, Lexi, Alex and Max’s adoptions were finalized. For their special day, their parents gave each child an engraved ID bracelet. The back of each bracelet read “Adoption is forever.”
“Because Lexi felt responsible to care for her younger brothers, it was difficult for her to relax into the role of child. Thanks to Jacob and Trina’s dedication and consistency, Lexi has been given the chance to let go and just be a kid. Today, all three children are thriving!”
– Deborah, Amara caseworker
Lexi, Alex and Max spent three years in foster care and were moved four times. When their aunt and uncle were no longer able to care for them, the siblings needed to move again.
