2E: Treating Injury Shock After Trauma; Dr. Nerman
Description: Trauma disrupts the body in manyways. It compromises the musculoskeletal, vascularand lymphatic systems. One of the most devastatingaspects of trauma is how profoundly it disrupts the nervoussystem, compromising the autonomic nervous systemsbalance and the cranial rhythmic impulse. I call thatdisruption injury shock. Until injury shock is addressed andthe autonomic nervous system returned to balance, the bodysability to heal is severely compromised. For me, treatinginjury shock is a critical aspect of treating trauma. In thesesessions, I will focus on three to four techniques that I havefound key to releasing injury shock: Dr. Fulfords abdominaldiaphragm release, rebalancing the ANS by treating the mid-thoracic, sacrum and OA junction, and calming CNS irritabilitythrough a version of the CV4 that even practitioners nottrained in Cranial Osteopathy can use.
3E: Self-treatment for Instant Healing of Trauma and
Disease; Drs. DEramo and Torres-Leon
Description: As osteopaths, it is incumbent upon us tolearn the science behind how we heal, to incorporatethese principles in our medical practice, and to initiate achange in the ways we apply the art and science of medicine. This teaching draws upon the research and work of multipleother scientists and practitioners in the ield of quantumphysics, cell biology, electrophysiology, and neurobiology, including: Institute for Heart Math; Bruce Lipton, PhD; JoanBorysenko, MD; Lynne McTaggart and David Hawkins, MD.

5A/6A: Detecting the Functional Persistence of Trauma inOsteopathic Treatment; Dr. Hagopian
Description: There is a reason we call osteopathiclesions somatic dysfunctionswith the emphasison the noun dysfunctionsrather than functional dys-somatics. Trauma often persists as a living process. In thislab session, making a case for the need for a more functionalapproach, we will examine some elusive aspects of trauma aswe build a perception-based (non-protocol) methodology forclinical care.
5B/6B: Impact Injuries: Description, Diagnosis andTreatment of Four Common Patterns of Viscoelastic
Change; Dr. Bellew
Description: The four most common impact injurieswill be described anatomically.Techniques fordiagnosing and treating these utilizing observation, grossmotion testingand the PRM will be discussedand, whenpossible, demonstrated.Given the observed incidence of thistype of injury (14% ) it is anticipated that participants willhave the opportunity to observe, if not diagnose and treat,an impact injury in their colleagues. A well-developed abilityto perceive the PRM is necessary to obtain maximum beneitfrom this workshop.
Thursday, March 20, 2014
2A/3A: OMT & Physics to Reverse the Damage of Trauma;Dr. Dowling
Description: Patients often present with historiesof trauma that precede their complaints of
neuromusculoskeletal disorder. An additional history andphysical examination, including osteopathic structuralexamination, can be utilized to develop treatments to assist inreversing the condition. The workshop will focus on applyingosteopathic principles by addressing the indings througha variety of modalities in a synthesizing fashion while alsoaddressing the other mind and spirit components of theperson.
2B/3B: Palpation and Treating the Brain Initial Phase:Trauma and Related Sympathetic States;Dr. Chikly
Description: In this lab we will provide an easy andeffective treatment to regularize tissue response to
trauma, including hyper- and hypoarousal states. We will review some of the trauma theory and we willdemonstrate an osteopathic application of the polyvagaltheory of Stephen Porges.
2C/3C: Practical Procedures for Integrating ChineseEnergetics into an Osteopathic Understanding ofMidline Function; Dr. Laseter
Description: The Microcosmic Orbit is a classicalunderstanding of midline function from the Daoistperspective. It is both a prelude and underpinning oftraditional Chinese medicine. Procedures for accessing the
energetic midline and objective evidence of its utility will bepresented. A new approach to treatment of the thoracolumbarspine and costal elements will be illustrated. This material canbe integrated into an osteopathic treatment paradigm and isequally useful as an exercise in patient self-care.
2D/3D: Allowing Inherent Forces to Resolve TraumaticStrains;Dr. Goldman
Description: W.G. Sutherland has generally beencredited with introducing the osteopathic professionto techniques related to the cranium. However, Sutherland,a direct hands-on-hands student of A.T. Still was certain thatStill already understood the role of the cranium within the
osteopathic concept. Sutherlands lifes work helped him andthose who followed to understand inherent forces withinthe patient, which he taught to others so they may betterunderstand Osteopathy. This lecture will present his approachto treatment. He said, the inherent forces within the patientsbody are more potent and accurate than any force that canpossibly be brought to bear from without.

5C/6C: Trauma in the Fascia: Undoing the Damage andSupporting the Healing; Dr. OConnell
Description: Trauma causes far-reaching effectsfrom the intra-cellular to the extra-corporeal. Thisworkshop will give practical experience in identifyingand alleviating the effects of trauma. Using the fascia as aportal of entry, participants will identify trauma patterns, primary dysfunctions, and compensation patterns andapply techniques to address these issues. Consideration of
complex layered trauma also will be discussed with treatmentstrategies developed.
5D/6D: VSR: Osteopathic Evaluation and Treatment of LowerExtremity Injuries with Regard to the Urogenital andHepatic Systems; Dr. Tortu
Description: This workshop deepens the knowledgegained in the lecture by evaluating the effectsof myriad and common lower extremity injuries as thefascial origin of dysfunction of certain organs of excretion, speciically, the kidney and urinary bladder and theliver and gallbladder. Old, lower extremity injury causesfascially-mediated restriction and irritation of the endorgan via deposition of shockwave injury patterns along theassociated meridian. This triggers a mechanicotransductionof increasing fascial tone into increasing afferent CNS tone, via the viscero somatic relex arc, triggering the increasedefferent tone responsible for the somatic complaints wecommonly see: somatic dysfunctions of the lower extremity, pelvis and lumbosacral regions as well as the commonly-known, autonomically mediated somatic dysfunctions foundalong dermatomally connected somatic regions. Osteopathicevaluation and treatment of these old injury patternswith respect to the speciic organ dysfunction releases theaberrant, fascially-mediated tone, decreasing afferent CNStone and, by relex, decreases efferent CNS tone, releasing the
somatic complaints associated with the injury pattern andimproving the function of these organs.
5E: Whiplash as a Total Body Injury;Dr. Robbins
Description: Whiplash is a condition commonlyconsidered to involve only cervical musculoskeletalinjury, but the neck nexus involves multi-regionanatomic derangement and multi-system dysfunction. In thislecture/workshop we will relate postural compensationsand spinal junction shifts to mechanism of injury and vectorstrains in order to provide head-to-foot clinical evaluationsand generate more comprehensive documentation of indingsand treatments. Learn osteopathic techniques (myofascial,
cranial, articulatory, HVLA, muscle energy) and take-homeexercises helpful in whiplash recovery from eyestrain topedal-stomping.
5F: Component Society Forum;Dr. Lossing
Description: AAO Component Society leaders are invitedto this unstructured discussion forum with AAO President-electKenneth J. Lossing, DO. The objective is to promote cooperationand collaboration in an effort to better serve AAO membersneeds.
6E: Magoun Memorial FAAO/NUFA Forum
Description: An informal gathering of the FAAOsand NUFAs. This workshop gives the FAAOs a chanceto mentor the National Undergraduate Fellows who areattending Convocation. It is an excellent opportunity for themto share their knowledge and expertise with the students whwish to follow in their footsteps. If you are a FAAO, pleaseconsider joining this very important workshop.

8A/9A: Precise Facet Activation at Your Fingertips:Cervical and OA HVLA; Dr. Kuchera
Description: Safety and eficacy in cervical high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) is paramount. This lectureand workshop is conducted by an FAAO physician who, inclinical and research settings, has studied miles and miles cervical structure-function relationships. Speciically he willfocus on speciic diagnosis and treatment of cervical somaticdysfunctions affecting one or both of the facet joints at eachvertebral unit. Fingerpad localization and precise glidingHVLA activation will be discussed in lecture and offered in th
hands-on lab. This presentation was designed to review andine-tune existing technique and provide new insights in theapplication of cervical HVLA.

8D: Faculty Development Workshop 1 The Teaching Identity;Dr. Schwalenberg Teaching While Practicing Osteopathic Medicine:
Secrets of Master Teachers;Dr. Rowane
Description: A physician is deined as a teacher. Itis a critical role for an Osteopathic physician to bea teacher, whether they are in an academic setting or in acommunity-based practice. The emphasis of these interactivsessions is to explore the role and identify the desirablecharacteristics for being an excellent teaching osteopathicphysician.
8E: Ariadnes String in the Rising Labyrinth ofHarmonization After Trauma: An OsteosophicalConceptualization (How global do you need to go totreat a local trauma?);Dr. Beuckels
Description: Dr. Beuckels will discuss the local andtotal shift in form and motion after trauma, givingan overview of the levels of harmonization and how newharmony transforms interactive neurological motion inone-way trafic. The workshop will cover defascilitation inthe neurological girdles, how to bring the patient back tothe neurological neutral before treating the local trauma, anintroduction to defascilitation procedures while discoveringthe Ariadnes string of trauma.
