The United States Military Academy is renowned because of its historic and distinguished reputation as a military academy, and as a leading, progressive institution of higher education. Made legendary in books and movies produced over the years, the Academy’s “Long Gray Line” of graduates includes some of our na-tion’s most famous and influential men: Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Norman Schwarzkopf. Because of this superb education and leadership experience, West Point graduates historically have been sought for high level civilian and military leadership positions. Their numbers include two U.S. presidents, several ambassadors, state governors, legislators, judges, cabinet members, educators, astronauts and corporate executives. Today, West Point continues to provide hundreds of young men and women the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career as an Army officer in the service of our nation. Cadets have much more responsibility in running the Academy than students in most other colleges or universities. It adds to the leadership experience. Cadets succeed at West Point because of the support they receive from the staff and faculty. After all, many faculty members are West Point graduates and understand the challenge cadets face on a daily basis. They also serve as ideal role models, showing cadets what Army life is like. The U.S. Military Academy’s primary strength is its ability to develop leaders of character who are com-mitted to “Duty, Honor, Country” and selfless service to our nation.

He graduated second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at the Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was selected to serve as Commanding General of the Army, but instead resigned his commission and was named General-In-Chief of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (USMA 1843), at Appomattox Court House, Va., ended the Civil War. Fort Lee, Va., was named in his honor.

ULYSSES S. GRANT ’43 Grant distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863; his victory secured control of the Mississippi River for the Union. President Abe Lincoln later appointed him Com-manding General of the Army in March 1864. On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Va., Robert E. Lee (USMA 1829) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to him, ending the Civil War. Grant later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. “The combination of an education at West Point and the experience of a career in the armed services will prepare you in a unique way for a rich diversity of further career and service in civilian life.” - HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER GLENN DAVIS

“I believe in the code ... ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’ I believe in service to one’s country. The institution of the armed forces has thrived on its commitment to developing excellence. It is meritocracy in action. Race, religion, wealth, background count not.” - PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH

“From the birth of our existence, America has had a faith in the future -- a belief that where we’re going is better than where we’ve been, even when the path ahead is uncertain. To fulfill that promise, generations of Americans have built upon the foundation of our forefathers -- finding opportunity, fighting injustice, forging a more perfect union. Our achievement would not be possible without the Long Gray Line that has sacrificed for duty, for honor, for country.” - PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

“My four years at West Point were wonderful. I loved every minute of it and particularly the last three years. I loved the history. I loved the tradition. I liked wearing the uniform. I felt like I belonged there. Everything was meaningful to me. There is no question in my mind the proudest day of my father’s life was the day I graduated from West Point. There is a picture of the two of us standing on ‘The Plain’ and he is just beaming.” - GENERAL H. NORMAN SCHWARzKOPF

“I was so proud to be on the verge of entering the only institution in American society at that time that was totally integrated, in which I would have the opportunity to rise, based solely on performance and ability. The nation always looks to West Point and always looks to each and every one of you to follow always the angels of your nature.” - GENERAL COLIN POWELL

“In every corner of America, the words ‘West Point’ command immediate respect. This place where the Hudson River bends is more than a fine institution of learning. The United States Military Academy is the guardian of values that have shaped the soldiers who have shaped the world.” - PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

“How great it must be, gosh how great it must be to be a member of this Corps. To know that camaraderie of discipline, of manners, of courtesy, of human sensibility, of one’s duty to his fellow man.” - JOURNALIST WALTER CRONKITE

“This place reeks of honor and discipline. With this show, we’ve been to a lot of great campuses all throughout the country over the years—and folks, let me tell you - there is absolutely nothing like this! Do yourself a favor and go look up West Point’s wikipedia page and compare that to your local college – that ought to shut you down for a while!” – COLIN COWHERD, ESPN RADIO HOST

“Any of us who went through the process; anyone who felt the flame of that furnace, came away altered in the way we go about running our lives. Some part of it is the belief that you are not only doing it for personal glory, but you do it because it is your responsibility. It’s part of being a member of The Corps and each of us that have felt that magic feel especially privileged to have done so.” - HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER PETE DAWKINS

“As I look back over my career in government, in business, of course in the military, I think West Point was a very influential experience. BOO CORRIGAN • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS • NOTRE DAME ’90

Boo Corrigan was named the Academy’s director of athletics on Feb. 1, 2011. “We have an opportunity to work every day with a truly exceptional group of young people,” Corri-gan said. “The opportunities they receive through intercollegiate athletics will help shape their own leadership styles as they become officers in the U.S. Army. We have a great team that focuses daily on our cadet-athletes. We strive to enhance their over-all experience as they develop into the leaders our nation needs.” In his short time as athletic director, Corri-gan has strengthened and expanded Army Athlet-ics’ relationships in several key areas. In his tenure, Army has secured a new apparel agreement with

Nike, a new pouring rights contract with Coke and bringing in the Aspire Group to enhance ticket sales and better serve Army season ticket holders. Corrigan also crafted the Team Army concept, a comprehensive plan designed to add significant value to Army’s corporate sponsorships while maintaining the tradition of West Point Athletics. Under Corrigan, Army has experienced incredible success on the fields of friendly strife, including winning the star series against Navy as well as the overall competition in 2013-14. Corrigan, who has a proven record as a fundraiser, spearheaded changes in the Army A Club and ticket operations that have resulted in more than $20 million dollars in major gifts and record-setting annual giving during his tenure. During that time the funding for a new la-crosse facility, that is scheduled to break ground, was secured, while raising a record amount in each successive year. In addition to his role in enhancing revenues for Army Athletics, Corrigan led a strategic planning process that developed a new mission statement and goals for the department. In his first full three years at West Point, Corrigan has overseen a program that owns 11 Patriot League regular season or tournament championships and sent eight teams to the NCAA postseason (rifle). Thirty-three cadets have earned a major award from their confer-ence,. Last season, Corrigan led Army Athletics to its first star series victory since 1996, going 12-11 in star series competitions against Navy. It was the 12th victory in the series for the Academy. West Point went 18-13 overall against the Mids during the year and has a 34-29-1 mark versus Navy in the last two seasons. Army finished a very successful campaign in 2013-14 with an overall record of 235-173-7 for a .575 winning percentage, the highest mark since 2004-05. In 2013-14, the Black Knights brought home league titles in men’s tennis, baseball and women’s basketball. Army won regular season titles in men’s tennis and baseball, while the women’s hoops squad won the league tournament and was a 13th seed in the NCAA Tourna-ment. Ten of Army’s squads participated in Patriot League postseason, while rifle earned an NCAA berth for the 11th-straight season. In 2012-13 alone, Army accounted for more than 100 all-league citations. Hockey’s Cheyne Rocha and lacrosse’s Brendan Buckley each captured the Senior CLASS Award in their respec-tive sports, making Army the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in 2012-13. During the 2012-13 season, Army teams combined to post an overall record of 236-183-8 for a .562 winning percentage. The winter sports programs had their best season in five years as the women’s basketball team won the Patriot League regular season title, the men’s bas-ketball team posted its first winning season in 28 years and the rifle squad advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive season. It was also a great year in the competition against fellow service academies. Army split the season series versus Navy, 16-16-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since 2004-05. The Black Knights owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, improving the record to 20-18-2 (.525) versus service academy foes in 2012-13. Cadet-athletes have continued to thrive in the classroom under Corrigan’s watch. In his two full years, Army has boasted seven Academic All-Americans, including six first-team selec-tions. Lacrosse’s Brendan Buckely became the first Army athlete to capture Academic All-American of the Year honors in 2012. In 2011, the Black Knights’ football team boasted two first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a first for the program since 1957. Since the start

of the 2011-12 season, Army boasts six Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, including Buckley, a two-time overall men’s winner. Twenty of Army’s 24 NCAA programs scored above the national average in the 2013 NCAA APR report. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams earned public recognition for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport. The cross country squad boasted a perfect score of 1,000. In addition, former football standout Andrew Rodriguez, Class of 2012, became the first Army player to win the National Football Foundation’s Willam V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. Rodriguez later was honored with the Amateur Athletic Union’s James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country. He was the first Army player to receive the award since 1946 and was just the third player in history (Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow) to win both the Campbell Trophy and Sullivan Award. Army has been the focus of national attention since Corrigan’s arrival. He was instrumental in supporting the CBS documentary, “Game of Honor,” that chronicled the Black Knights’ 2011 football season leading up to its annual showdown with arch-rival Navy. Not only was the two-hour program broadcast to a national audience on Showtime, but also won the Emmy Award for Best Sports Documentary. The Army football team was also the focus of a behind-the-scenes book titled, “Soldiers First,” written by New York Times writer Joe Drape. Corrigan has also made his mark on the aesthetics of historic Michie Stadium. In order to upgrade the appearance and provide a better experience for Army fans, Corrigan imple-mented a Michie Stadium branding and signage campaign that began in 2011. The first phase of the project was completed prior to the 2012 season. In addition to his duties at West Point, Corrigan has been an active leader in the Patriot League, serving as chairman of the conference’s Broadband Committee. Corrigan, who was the senior associate athletic director for external affairs at Duke Uni-versity starting in August 2008, brings a wealth of leadership to his post. He is a proven ad-ministrator with 18 previous years of experience in all areas of revenue generation, external affairs, staff management and leadership. Corrigan’s chief responsibilities at Duke included the oversight of the Blue Devil corporate partnerships and the Marketing, Promotions, Ticket, Internet Operations, Sports Information and Video Services departments. In only two years at Duke, Corrigan was responsible for the negotiation of multi-media rights to ISP. A supervisor of the 2009 NCAA Champion women’s tennis and 2010 NCAA Champion men’s lacrosse programs, Corrigan was a part of three NCAA Championships at Duke in just two seasons. He is currently a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules committee and the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Committee, while serving on the Executive Budget Committee at Duke. Prior to arriving at Duke in August of 2008, he oversaw Notre Dame’s corporate relations and marketing as an associate athletic director for five years. During his stint at Notre Dame, Corrigan spearheaded the redesign of its official athletics website and creation of 15-20 hours of original video content weekly. That resulted in a 35 percent increase in page views and unique users. Corrigan also worked directly with ISP Sports, CSTV, and NBC Sports from a sales and marketing standpoint. Before joining the staff at Notre Dame, Corrigan spent nearly three years as the associate athletic director for marketing at the United States Naval Academy. He was responsible for turning the marketing department from a deficit to profit in his first year with full budget responsibility for the department. Corrigan also was intimately involved with the re-branding of the Annual Giving Campaign (The Blue and Gold), which led to an increase of 75 percent year over year donations. His collegiate experience also includes a stint as assistant director of marketing at Florida State from 1992-95. Corrigan is a 1990 University of Notre Dame graduate with a degree in economics. He is mar-ried to the former Kristen Aceto, a former field hockey and lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who also earned a master’s degree from the school. The couple has three children, Finley, Tre and Brian. He is the youngest of seven children of Gene and Lena Corrigan.

Brian Bancroft comes to West Point from Texas A&M where he spent the past eight seasons as a team administrator. With the Aggies, the 1992 A&M graduate was responsible for a number of administrative duties, including scheduling, team travel, recruiting logistics and event management responsibilities. Additionally, from the 2005 through the 2008 season, Bancroft aided in weight room instruction as well

as coaching of throws, jumps, sprints and distance groups.

Bancroft was an integral member of the Texas A&M Track and Field Camp staff, serving as Camp Director for the past two years. Bancroft, who holds USTFCCCA Throws Specialist Certification, was a throws and sprints coach for the past four years. In addition to his camp duties, Bancroft played a major role in the administration of the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional and the 2004 U.S. Junior Championships, both hosted by Texas A&M.

The Aggies enjoyed unprecedented success during Bancroft’s era, making history by becoming the first school to win dual national championship titles three consecutive years. A&M won both men’s and women’s NCAA outdoor track titles 2009-11, capped off with the men’s program capturing the 2013 outdoor crown.

Bancroft has also worked extensively with professional athletes. During the offseason, he assisted A&M staff members with the training programs

of such professionals as world-record holder Aries Merritt and Olympic gold medalist Muna Lee.

Prior to joining the A&M track staff, Bancroft was a systems analyst for the athletic department for four years. He holds a pair of engineering degrees from Texas A&M, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1993 followed by a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering in 1996. After working as an engineer and consultant, Bancroft joined the Texas A&M athletic department in November of 2001.

As a student at A&M, Bancroft was a four-year member of Squadron 7 in the Corps of Cadets of the ROTC program and a Ross Volunteer. Athletically he competed in the decathlon for the Aggie track and field program in 1992 and 1993, and was also a member of the 12th Man football squad for a season.

“Several years ago, friends on the A&M staff told me that if we ever had an opening, they had the perfect guy,” said former head coach Troy Engle of Bancroft. “Throughout the interview process, that became very clear to me; Brian Bancroft is an unbelievable fit for our program.

“He is a passionate coach, is as hard working as they come and understands how uniquely special our cadet-athletes are. As I asked around about the right person for our throws job, coaches from the Ivy League to the SEC, from Boston to the Bayou, all mentioned Brian’s name. We are lucky and I am very excited about having him on the staff. He understands winning and moreover is committed to doing it the right way with the quality of cadet-athletes that we have on our team.”

Shannon O’Brien enters her third season with the Black Knight cross country program in 2013. O’Brien, who also helps guide Army’s distance contingent during track season, came to West Point from Florida State, where she served two years as meet director and graduate manager for the women’s track and field and cross country programs.

During her first season with the Army cross country program in 2012, the Black Knight men earned their best point total at the Patriot League Championships since 2008, while the women scored their best mark since 2005. Also at the conference meet, Lisa Junta earned Army’s best individual finish since 1998, running to a third-place finish to garner first-team all-league honors.

The Black Knights collected five All-Patriot League certificates, their highest total since 2008. Success continued into the NCAA East Regional meet, where Junta earned the best individual finish in women’s program history and Ricardo Galindo recorded the men’s highest individual mark since 2008.

Army also succeeded in the classroom as Junta, Galindo and Kendall Ward were voted to the Academic All-Patriot League team before both the men’s and women’s squads earned Division I All-Academic recognition by the USTFCCCA.

At FSU, O’Brien was responsible for designing a training regiment for walk-on athletes as well as conducting daily practices for that contingent. With her guidance, four student-athletes were offered scholarships to run for the perennial national contender program.Working alongside FSU head coach Karen Harvey, the women’s cross country team placed second at the NCAAs in 2010 and fourth in 2011, while the track team’s distance unit enjoyed similar success on the regional and national stage.

Prior to her two-year stint with the Seminoles, O’Brien was an assistant coach/coaching intern at Dartmouth College with the Big Green’s track and cross country teams. O’Brien got her first taste of recruiting while in Hanover, N.H., as she worked on arranging official visits and contacted potential student-athletes.

O’Brien also spent her undergraduate years in New Hampshire, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English from Keene State College in 2005. The middle-distance specialist was an All-American for the Owls in the 800 meters, and still maintains her hold on school records in the 500 meters, 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay.

Following her graduation, she worked at her alma mater as an assistant coach through the summer of 2006.

O’Brien, who received her master’s degree in sport management from Florida State in 2012, has a USATF Level 1 Certification and has worked for running camps across the country, including Vermont and Oregon.

A new season will usher in a new chapter for the Army men’s and women’s cross country teams, when they welcome new leadership to the program, as head coach Troy Engle stepped down after six seasons at the helm of the program.

While the leadership may have changed, the goals remain the same. The men snapped a four-season losing streak in the “Star” matchup with Navy last season, while the women have not seen a victory over the Midshipmen in the “Star” series since 2010 and neither team has claimed a Patriot League title over the previous six seasons. However, with a bevy of upperclassmen, this year’s cadets are primed and poised to make a push for the championship.

“Don’t count the men out for the Patriot League title,” said assistant coach Shannon O’Brien. “The point spread last year was so small that I don’t think the title is out of our grasp. That’s what we’re training for and we’re looking to be a dominant force that will contend for the conference crown.

“With the women, a few years ago we were in third place and we only had about eight runners that were healthy. This year’s team has the desire to step up and fill the roles that need to be filled. They have the desire and the talent to be one of the Patriot League’s top teams.”

CAPTAINS Nathan Fisher will lead the way for the men as the 2014 team captain. Fisher competed in six races with the Black Knights in his junior season and was in Army’s top 10 in each of those competitions. He started the season off with an eighth place overall finish at the Army Open and followed that up as the Black Knights’ No. 6 runner at the Iona Meet of Champions. At the Paul Short Invitational, he was the team’s third finisher and was Army’s No. 7 runner in

the team’s next two races. He was the team’s No. 6 finisher at the NCAA Regionals.

“He is a born leader,” said O’Brien. “I couldn’t be happier with his ability to lead his troops and he will be a fantastic officer after he graduates. He’s got a gigantic group of teammates but he reins them in and gets them going and I couldn’t be more proud of him.” On the women’s side, Katrina Mecklenburg has earned captain duties as one of six seniors on the squad. Mecklenburg was one of only six Army women to compete in all seven races last season,

finishing in the Black Knights’ top seven in each race. She started the year with a fourth place finish at the Army Open and followed that up as Army’s No. 7 runner at Cornell and the Iona Meet of Champions. She was the team’s No. 6 runner for the final four races of the season and was 58th overall at the Patriot League Championships. A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient, she has 14 races under her belt as a Black Knight.

“I’ve already seen Katrina (Mecklenburg) address team issues and take situations into her own hands,” O’Brien said. “She’s motivated and focused and is a very vocal leader who doesn’t mess around. She has really stepped up and I can see the desire and the will to win that she’s bringing to the team. She’s always got the team’s best interest at heart, and that’s what is going to make her such a great leader for us this year.”

RETURNERSThe men will return 15 runners with experience, including four seniors, six juniors and five sophomores. The women will bring along 12 returners, including six seniors, two juniors and four sophomores.

Although the men suffered the loss of their top two runners from last season, they return a strong core of upperclassmen that are ready to lead the Black Knights to another successful year.

Three seniors highlight the returners, in addition to Fisher, including Cody Barger, Andreas Kellas and Trevor Lafontaine.

Barger competed in six of the Black Knights’ seven races last season, finishing in the team’s top five in each competition. He took fourth place overall at the Army Open and finished fifth for the team in the next two races. His fifth overall finished helped lead the Black Knights to a Star meet victory over rival Navy and he placed 20th at the Patriot League Championships and was the team’s No. 3 runner at the NCAA Regionals.

Kellas competed in four races in his junior season, cracking the Black Knights’ top 10 in two of them. He was the team’s No. 8 runner at Cornell and No. 9 finisher and 54th overall at the Patriot League Championships.

Lafontaine competed in five races during the 2013 season, and was one of Army’s top 10 finishers in all five. He started the season as the team’s

No. 6 runner at the Army Open and followed that up with back-to-back performances as the team’s fourth place finisher at Cornell and the Iona Meet of Champions. His ninth place finish against Navy helped lead the Black Knights to victory, and he ended the season as the team’s No. 10 runner at the Patriot League Championships.

Also returning with significant experience for the men will be juniors Drew Beck, Alex Duffy, Mitch Dutton, Eric Fenton, Ludo Funfrock and Tom Girardot.

“(Nathan) Fisher has always been strong in track and field and he is really stepping up this season. As a miler, he’s showing a lot of strength and endurance, which is very impressive to see. I think he’ll be able to be consistently in our top five this season,” O’Brien said. “Trevor (Lafontaine) looks strong and if he stays healthy, he will consistently be our front runner. He is one of the hardest workers and most dedicated members of our team.

“Drew Beck is also looking very good with a good summer of mileage under his belt. I’m looking for him to step into a role of being one of our top runners, along with (Matthew) Bearden, who is always ready to go. Those four key players are really setting the standard for the team this season and that leaves room for anyone to step in and make a difference.”

The women return eight upperclassmen, including six seniors in Mecklenburg, Emily Buck, Dayna Cline, Jennifer Comfort, Rachel King and Lisa Junta.

Both King and Junta return to cross country competition after sitting out the 2013 season.

In 2012, King was an All-Patriot League second team recipient and one of six Black Knights to compete in all seven races. She was among Army’s top-five finishers in every race and in the top three in the final three competitions.

Junta was also dominant during the 2012 season, earning first team All-Patriot League accolades. She was a two-time Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, was named to the Academic All-Patriot League and was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. As a sophomore, she led Army in all seven races and took third overall at the Patriot League

Championships, the best individual finish by a Black Knight since 1998. She finished 34th of 239 at the NCAA Regionals, marking the best finish in program history. She was also tabbed as Army’s Women’s Yearling of the Year at the Black Knight Awards in May 2013. Comfort has not seen action on the cross country course, but is an integral member of the track & field team.

Buck competed in all seven races for the Black Knights, finishing as the team’s No. 4 runner in five of them. She took eighth overall at the Army Open to start the season, before solidifying her role on the team. She finished eighth overall in the team’s narrow loss to Navy and was 39th overall at the Patriot League Championships.

Cline competed six races in her junior season, finishing in the top 10 in all of them. She was the team’s No. 9 runner in the Army Open and against Cornell before finishing as Army’s No. 8 at the Iona Meet of Champions. She was again the No. 9 at the Paul Short Invitational and against Navy and wrapped up the year as the Black Knight’s No. 8 at the Patriot League Championships.

Two juniors will highlight a significant part of the returning talent for the Black Knights in Madison Hill and Lindsay Gabow.

Hill was the team’s top finisher in four of the six races, claiming an individual victory against Army Open to start the season. She was the team’s No. 2 against Cornell and at the Iona Meet of Champions before finishing the season out in the No. 1 spot. She took second overall against Navy and was 12th overall at the Patriot League Championships. The junior wrapped up the 2013 season as the team’s top runner at the NCAA Regionals. She was All-Patriot League second team, the only Black Knight to earn All-Patriot League recognition.

Gabow was in the team’s top five for all six of her competitions, opening up the season with a third overall finish at the Army Open. Against Cornell she was the team’s No. 5 and followed that up as the team’s No. 3 at the Iona Meet of Champions and the Paul Short Invitational. She took ninth place overall against Navy and wrapped up the season as the team’s No. 2 and 19th place finisher at the Patriot League Championships and the Black Knights’ No. 2 runner at the NCAA Regionals.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the juniors step up and have a leadership role,” O’Brien said. “I’ve been very impressed with Katrina (Mecklenburg) and her leadership and determination to bring the women out of their losing streak against Navy. They’re extremely dedicated and focused on getting after it and competing hard. I have never seen the team’s drive this hard since I’ve been here. I think they’re riding high off of the women’s outdoor track victory over Navy last season and they really want to prove themselves.

“Katrina (Mecklenburg) looks better than she ever has and if we can keep her and Rachel (King) healthy, they’ll both make a big impact. I’m so excited for Jen Comfort to compete in cross country this season because she’s always been such a big part of the track & field teams that I think she’ll make us that much better.”

NEWCOMERS The men welcome nine freshmen while the women bring in six plebes to the mix.

“We’re really excited about the crop of freshmen we have this season,” O’Brien said. “For the men, I’m really looking for Nick Causey, Ryan Smathers and John Valeri to contend for a top spot. They’ve already shown a lot of early-season potential and I think they have a chance to sneak into the top seven, which is something that is really rare for a freshman.

“On the women’s side, we have a small but really fierce and determined group. Courtney Dooley is already showing early promise and talent and we brought in Dana O’Donnell, who is the sister of last year’s team captain, so she’ll bring a lot to the mix as well. The group has been working hard and are trying to encourage and push one another to break into the top spots.”

SCHEDULE The Black Knights will get underway late in the month of August, hosting the Army Open on Aug. 29 and following that up with a dual meet with Cornell. Those two competitions will be the only two home events for the Black Knights as they find themselves on the road for the remainder of the season.

“For cross country, that’s normal,” O’Brien said. “Those first couple home meets are generally ‘rust busters’ and then being able to take the

competition on the road gives us the chance to face a lot of good teams and that will be helpful down the road.”

The Iona Meet of Champions will take place at van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx on Sept. 20 to close out the first month of competition, followed by the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. on Oct. 4.

In the last event of the regular season, the Black Knights will head to Annapolis Army-Navy “Star” meet on Oct. 18.

Lehigh will host this year’s Patriot League Championships on Nov. 1 with the NCAA Regionals to follow from Van Courtlandt Park on Nov. 14.

“Iona will give us a preview of the course we’ll be running on at NCAA Regionals, but in a low pressure situation. That helps because the cadets get the chance to scout it out before, which may give them a slight advantage come postseason,” said O’Brien. “Paul Short is also a great competition because schools from all around the country compete, so we get the chance to face teams we wouldn’t see on a regular basis.

“We’re really looking forward to Navy this year, riding off of the men’s ‘Star’ victory last season. When Navy is here we have the slight edge with home-course advantage, so going into their home turf takes that away from us this season, but our runners are ready and are up for the challenge.”

PRESEASON POLLSThe mixture of returning talent and a plethora of eager newcomers have the 2014 squads ready to make another run toward the Patriot League titles and victories over service academy rival Navy.

In the Patriot League preseason polls, which were released on Aug. 20, the men were picked to finish fourth in the conference, while the women were tabbed to finish fifth. On the men’s side, Navy was voted into the top spot, followed by Lehigh and American. For the women, Boston took the No. 1 spot, followed by Lehigh, Navy and Bucknell.

Both teams will have the chance to faceoff with Cornell, who received regional preseason rankings from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Big Red men ranked No. 8, while the women earned No. 5.

Both squads will have the chance to showcase their skills against some of the nation’s top talent, with recent NCAA champions such as Georgetown and Villanova taking place in the Paul Short Invitational.

The 2014 season is expected to be a memorable and successful one for the Black Knights.

WOMEN’S PATRIOT LEAGUE HISTORY

Page 75: 2014 Cross Country Media Guide

The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education.

The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing and Georgetown in both football and women’s rowing.

These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country.

In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men; 13 for women). Championship teams from 15 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men and women’s soccer, softball, men and women’s tennis and volleyball.

Along the timeline of Patriot League history about three-quarters of the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year also received All-Patriot League status for their exemplary athletic performance.

In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.
