STAFF MATTERS Update for Catskill Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers November/December 2014 This year, in an effort to better align ourselves with the GHVHS mission, we have enhanced our staff performance appraisal to further define and incorporate “Always” behaviors within the evaluation process. Caring. Communication. Cleanliness. Comfort. Coordination. These are the essentials that comprise our “Always” events at Catskill Regional. An “Always” event refers to the most important facets of the patient experience. As healthcare providers, and because we know that our patients and their families - our customers - expect to receive the best delivery of care, we should always get it right. “Always” events are also defined as the behaviors that each staff member should take every day while interacting with patients and their families; always treating our customers with the utmost respect and dignity and without judgment. Every member of our staff will be evaluated on key behavioral indicators within the Standards of Behavior portion of their annual performance evaluation effective January 1, 2015. This year, in an effort to better align ourselves with the GHVHS mission, we have enhanced our staff performance appraisal to further define and incorporate “Always” behaviors within the evaluation process. Caring. Communication. Cleanliness. Comfort. Coordination. These are the essentials that comprise our “Always” events at Catskill Regional.

A Message From Our Leader

Catskill Regional is a recipient of the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative (NYSPQC) Obstetrics Improvement Project’s 2013 Quality Improvement Award.

This award was given in recognition of the hard work and dedication of the Catskill Regional staff that reduced scheduled newborn deliveries without medical indication between 36 and 39 weeks gestation. UPDATEMedical Group Welcomes New Additions

CRMG supports Coat DriveCatskill Regional Medical Group worked with the Federation for the Homeless to conduct a winter coat drive and collected used coats, gloves and hats to help families in need this winter.

Catskill Regional Medical Group is pleased to announce that Jennifer K. Vazquez-Bryan, MD, a bilingual Family Medicine physician, has joined the Primary Care practice of both Catskill Regional Medical Group and Orange Regional Medical Group. In addition to her strong medical credentials, Dr. Vazquez-Bryan, who is fluent in Spanish, will be an asset to serving the growing Spanish-speaking community. Prior to joining Catskill Regional Medical Group, Dr. Vazquez-Bryan practiced Family Medicine at Columbia Valley Community Health in Wenatchee, Washington.

Dr. Vazquez-Bryan is a graduate of Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she earned her medical degree and multiple awards including Distinction in Service to the Community and Excellence in Family Medicine. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Vazquez- Bryan has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and completed her internship and residency at Swedish Family

Medicine in Seattle, Washington. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine, one of the largest national medical associations of family doctors.

Dr. Vazquez-Bryan has been published and recognized for altruistic work promoting healthcare in impoverished areas. She is widely traveled and has spent extensive time with native groups in Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya and Alaska developing programs that benefit those communities. Colleen T. Minnock, MSN, FNP-BC, has joined the Catskill Regional Medical Group as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care. She will work alongside the growing Primary Care practices at both the Catskill Regional Medical Group and Orange Regional Medical Group offices.

Colleen is an established leader with over 30 years of nursing experience, most recently as Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Department Nurse Practitioner and as Nursing Director in the Emergency Department at Orange Regional. Prior to joining Orange Regional, she was Medical/Legal Investigator for the Orange County Medical Examiner. In addition to her current role with the Medical Groups, she is also Medical Liaison for the Village of Goshen Police Department.

Colleen is a member of Emergency Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Society of Trauma Nurses. Her certifications include American Nurses Credentialing Center Board Certification in Family Practice, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life

Support, Neonatal Advanced Life Support and Trauma Nursing Core Course instructor. She graduated from Dominican College with a Master of Science degree in Family Nurse Practitioner and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from State University of New York at New Paltz. Catskill Regional Imaging Center in Monticello and the Grover Hermann Division in Callicoon were part of a recent Federal Mammography Quality Standards Act inspection for the Mammography Program at Catskill Regional Medical Center. The inspection revealed no citings, major recommendations or areas of non-compliance. The review was comprehensive and covered all Mammography related policies and procedures, Quality Assurance Program, equipment records and patient results reporting. Thank you to the mammography staff, Natasha and Carol for all of their hard work and support, Radiologic Associates’ Dr. Victor Todisco and Dr. Michelle Greco, Dr. Joe Racanelli, and physicist Tom LaRocca for his testing and guidance. On December 2, the third class of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System Leadership Academy, completed its master course in leadership. The group consisted of leaders from both Catskill Regional and Orange Regional. The Leadership Academy is taught by internal GHVHS experts.

At its annual dinner meeting on November 20, held at Catskill Regional, the Town of Fallsburg Lions Club presented CEO & CMO, Dr. Gerard Galarneau and Medical Director, Dr. Bruce Ellsweig with a $3,000 donation. The Town of Fallsburg Lions Club has been a steady supporter of Catskill Regional for many years and we thank them for all their support!

On October 27, Combined Energy Services Manager, Mike Taylor presented a $4,000 check donation to Administrator of Nursing Professional Practice/Obstetrics Nursing Director, Laura Northrup, RN, MSN, VP of Patient Services & CNO, Rolland “Boomer” Bojo and CEO & CMO, Dr. Gerard Galarneau. Combined Energy Services is a yearly sponsor of Catskill Regional’s Women’s Health Center and Oncology unit in their efforts to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention and treatment.

Quality and Patient Safety Award CelebrationThe Greater Hudson Valley Health System rolled out the red carpet in style this year with honored employees attending the Second Annual Quality and Patient Safety Academy Award Celebration on October 29 at the West Hills Country Club. Many interdisciplinary teams and individuals from Catskill Regional and Orange Regional were recognized for their achievements in improving the quality of care and safety of our patients. Awards were given in different categories including “Most Innovative,” “Most Caring,” “Visionary,” “Patient Safety” and “Achievement in Patient Outcomes.” Special awards were given to leaders and staff that go above and beyond in keeping quality and patient safety at the forefront and are true quality champions. Jill Embler has joined the Greater Hudson Valley Health System as Vice President of Financial Planning with oversight at Catskill Regional and Orange Regional Medical Centers. Jill has over 20 years experience in financial planning and analytics. She joins us from Mount Sinai Health System (formerly Continuum Health Partners, Inc.) in New York City. At Mount Sinai, Jill most recently served as Vice President of Financial Planning & Decision Support since 2010, where she oversaw the Financial Planning and Decision Support operations. Jill is responsible for long range financial planning and forecasting, along with the planning and implementation of business intelligence and reporting for GHVHS. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pace University and her Master of Science degree in Public Administration from New York University. Kim Carriere, MBA has been promoted to GHVHS Administrator Revenue Cycle Operations (RCO). Kim joined GHVHS in August as Administrator of Patient Access Management. Shortly thereafter, she was selected to provide interim oversight of the Patient Financial Services team.

The Administrator Revenue Cycle Operations is a new position based on the relationship between Patient Access and Patient Financial Services. Kim’s 18+ years experience across the revenue cycle continuum and her performance, to date, make her an ideal candidate for this key component of the Revenue Cycle Process. Her expanded span of control includes GHVHS Patient Financial Services (credit collections & vendor management, patient accounts, charge master, denial management and cashiers) as well as the continued oversight of GHVHS Patient Access Management (pre-registration, centralized scheduling, reception, registration, inpatient bed control and financial advocates). Linda Gonska has been promoted to GHVHS Administrator System Controller. Linda has been a member of the Orange Regional family since 1997, where she was a Senior Accountant. Most recently, Linda held the position of Controller for Orange Regional. In her new role, Linda is Controller for both the Catskill Regional and Orange Regional Campuses. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Ramapo College of New Jersey and her Master of Science degree in Business Administration from Marist College in Poughkeepsie. William Scheuermann has been promoted to GHVHS Administrator of Revenue Strategy and Decision Support. William has been with Orange Regional for 13 years. He served in several roles including Senior Analyst, Manager of Managed Care and most recently as Director of Managed Care and Decision Support. William has made significant improvements to the managed care negotiation process and as a result, has raised reimbursement levels for the care provided at both hospitals. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Management and his Master of Science degree in Business Administration from State University of New York-New Paltz. Catskill Regional Partners with Ride 2 Survive to Raise Funds For Cancer PatientsOn November 5, Catskill Regional Medical Center, in conjunction with Morrison and Crothall Healthcare, partnered with Ride 2 Survive for a fundraising Smoothie Bike event in the Catskill Cafe. Employees, patients and their families rode a bike that was hooked up to a blender. When pedaled, the bike powered the blender to mix up hand selected fresh fruits and veggies into smoothies which were sold.

The event promoted a healthy lifestyle and raised $300 for Ride 2 Survive, a foundation established to assist with transportation expenses for Sullivan County residents with cancer.

Ride 2 Survive is a volunteer community-based organization whose mission is to assist with transportation expenses for Sullivan County residents under the care of an oncologist and who have been diagnosed with cancer or a pre-malignant condition. The Ride 2 Survive’s Annual Dinner Dance, the foundation’s largest fundraiser, took place on November 15, at the Villa Roma in Callicoon, New York, however, donations are accepted throughout the year. Annual Education Reminder Please note: Annual education began two months earlier this year to provide employees additional time to complete the modules. Employees who joined the Greater Hudson Valley Health System in 2014 and have completed the general hospital orientation, have already fulfilled the annual education requirement. For all other employees, annual education must be completed by December 31, 2014. Halloween SceneOn October 31, the Food Services Department held a pumpkin decorating contest for all Catskill Regional employees in celebration of Halloween. The contest was judged by Administrator of Nursing Professional Practice/Obstetrics Nursing Director, Laura Northrup, RN, MSN, Staff Development Director, Lisa Clark and Director of Food Services, Bill Titherington.

At the Harris Campus, first place was awarded to Patient Access for their Cinderella Coach, second place was awarded to Pharmacy for their Tin Man and third place was awarded to both Case Management and RISE for their Candy Apple Sweets pumpkin.

At the Callicoon Campus, first place was awarded to Physical Therapy for the Great Burger, second place was awarded to Maintenance for their Pumpkin Eater and third place was awarded to EVS for their Do You Have a Headache pumpkin. After the contest, employees enjoyed cider, cupcakes and donuts provided by Food Services.
