Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends,

A little late I know, but Happy New Year!

I recently found this quote: "Beginning today, treat everyone you meet asif they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness, and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought ofany reward. Your life will never be the same again."

That quote was written by Og Mandino, a Christian who wrote several self-help books, and he was the author of ten scrolls for a life changing way ofliving; the titles include: Today I will begin a new life; I will greet this daywith love in my heart; I will persist until I succeed; I will live this day asif it is my last; I will pray for guidance… All good titles for the Christianlife!

It is difficult to live each day on ‘full throttle’, throwing ourselves into lifeas though today is all there is; but every morning when we awake, someonesomewhere is leaving this world – and that thought should help usappreciate and make the most of the day we have been gifted.

February is the month with Valentine’s day, a time of showing appreciationfor loved ones with gifts of chocolate, flowers and cards; it alwaysseemed to me to be a shame that such things were only celebrated once ayear, and I am sure that many shower such gifts more often…

But the gifts we can share with all every day are far more telling; the giftof God’s love, of our time and attention, are far more valuable. To livewith kindness and understanding, to live with love in our hearts, to praydaily for guidance, to give thanks for each new day as the gift of life thatit is – this is to make the most of our days.

May we all succeed this year in living our days.

Basic Caring Communities (BaCC)Christian volunteers wanted to support ex- prisoners

This email was received on the 15th of January................. We are in urgent need of more Christian volunteers to support

ex-offenders trying to resettle into London communities. We would be verygrateful if you could promote our project.

BaCC has been running for several years from Wandsworth and Brixtonprisons, and is now also operating from HMP Pentonville (Islington). Duringthe first crucial months after release, what with housing problems, benefitdelays and the unlikelihood of being able to find employment, the oddsare stacked against the ex-prisoner managing to stay out of trouble. Ourtrained volunteers offer a daily supportive phone call and a willingness tomeet if required to help deal with practical issues. The whole group getstogether once a week, giving the ex-prisoner a positive social networkand focus, the chance to offload frustrations and thrash out areas ofconcern – as well as simply to enjoy a cup of coffee in the congenialcompany of positive role-models.

Our volunteers benefit too. They can enhance their own learning and skills, but more importantly, perhaps, appreciate the opportunity to put theirfaith into direct action - a faith that acknowledges we all make mistakes, but all (thanks to the grace of God and not our merit) have the right to afresh start – as many times as it takes.

We run monthly Taster sessions and trainings and provide supervision andsupport to our volunteers. Our next Taster session is scheduled for:

Saturday 22nd February 2014, from 10.00am to 12.30pm. At Pact office:Park Place, 12 Lawn Lane, Vauxhall, London, SW8 1UD.

As space is limited, volunteers will need to contact me([email protected]) to book a place.

Attending the session doesn’t commit volunteers to anything, it just givesthe information. By the end of the session, attendees will have:

• understood the rationale and purpose of the BaCC project,• understood the volunteering role and the level of commitment,• explored your own motivation for volunteering,• understood the values and culture of BaCC and a BaCC group• and gained an insight into the types of ex-prisoners you might support. Please note that volunteers would need to get to our Central Office inVauxhall for their training and interview but, after their recruitment, they willbe able to volunteer in a London area of their choice.

God bless,Maria Dimouli - Volunteer Programmes Administrator07419 373 059 or Tel: 020 7735 9535

Website of the Month The Huffington Post

If you wish to read the entire interview online, open the website and search forSue Powell. Alternatively, follow this link: -http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/hannah-gal/have-yourself-a-very-huma_b_4487248.html

Sue was contacted by a mum of one of the Pickhurst Infants childrenwho came to HFC for the carol service, and she asked if she wouldwrite something to go on the Internet in Huffington Post.

The journalist's preamble and the first part of the questions andanswers follow.

Christmas is celebrated by all and is a great time for reflection. At atime when God of all faiths is 'under attack' and Christianity inparticular is described by religious leaders as being 'in danger' , Iwanted to present a more humanist message to the world, much likethe one you delivered so movingly at the Pickhurst school service.

Like other parents, I was touched by the fact that you did not 'hound'the children but presented an idea that touches everyone regardlessof faith or background, that of love and forgiveness.

Please be as elaborate or brief with your response and bear in mindthat as a journalist, I often play devils advocate purposely and mightexpress views that are not necessarily mine.

1 If you were to deliver a Christmas message to all readers, of differentbackgrounds and cultures what would it be?

The Christmas message if one of love, hope, joy and forgiveness. Lovefor each other, regardless of birth or status; hope that holds us strongfor the future - if we do not have hope, we wither and die; joy simplybecause we have so very much to be joyful about and we shouldacknowledge that; forgiveness - without it we have none of theothers... we need to be able to forgive to know love, hope, and joy.

2 Christmas is celebrated by all, including atheists. Even RichardDawkins spoke of his love for this holiday and why he celebrates it.Do you welcome people celebrating a non religious Christmas -celebrating kindness/family and friends and not the birth of Jesus?

I suspect we already do! Of course we welcome people, those offaith and those without, those seeking something more in their livesand those wanting companionship. Churches are here for all people.

3 I attended a service for school children where parents were movedby your wonderful delivery to the children but also by your messageof love and forgiveness. The profoundness and relevance of this isunquestionable: all people would benefit from more love in their lives, any person capable of forgiveness will be more at peace - myquestion here is do you think that by not attending church and beingexposed to these messages, people are missing out on a way tobetter their lives?

I feel there is a lack of care in our society today. Too many peopleare so focused on their own lives that they cease to see what ishappening in the lives of others. Many, even in our churches, areignorant of the great need for the Food Banks that churches have setup all over the land. People seem determined to lay the blame atthe door of the poor, without finding out the causes for poverty. Ithas become the easy option to blame the 'lazy' or the 'benefit culture'without finding out the facts. We all want to be loved and forgiven,we all need to be loved and forgiven, yet we don't want to love andforgive others around us - and we must. In churches we work atreminding ourselves that love and forgiveness is something that takesenergy and work, and that we should be practising every day in anattempt to get it right - I wonder where else in society (besideschurches) that message is found today? How do people challengetheir preconceptions, how do others find ways in which to live out the

NestléNestlé is draining developing countries’ groundwater to make its PureLife bottled water, and then forcing its people to buy their own waterback. Now Nestlé is moving into Pakistan and sucking up the localwater supply, rendering entire areas uninhabitable in order to sellmineral-enriched water to the upper class as a status symbol, while thepoor watch wells run dry and their children fall ill.

Tell Nestlé: Stop stealing the water, making villages uninhabitable.Children are getting sick from the foul-smelling sludge they’re forced tochoke down. Meanwhile, Nestlé spends millions marketing “Pure Life” towealthy Americans, Europeans, and Pakistanis.

Dirty water kills more children around the world than AIDS, malaria, war,and traffic accidents combined -- and Nestlé has a big hand in it.

At the World Water Forum in 2000, Nestlé led the way in fighting againstdefining access to water a universal right.

Tell Nestlé: Water is a human right. Stop stealing it from communities. When the company's Canadian subsidiary pushed to keep draining

millions of litres of fresh water from the water table in a time of drought,we joined our friends at the Council of Canadians, Wellington WaterWatchers, and Ecojustice challenging Nestlé in court -- and we won!If we expose Nestlé’s disgusting game plan, it will scale back its water-draining facilities. If we ignore things, the problem will not go away. Joinus in standing up to corporations like Nestlé that suck up essentialnatural resources. Nestlé’s current chairman and former CEO wascaught on tape arguing that water is "not a right”, and while the clip isshocking, the reality is even worse.

love and forgiveness many in our society so desperately need? Oneplace to find it is in churches, there are ways to work out our need tolove others including volunteering - but where is the message of loveand forgiveness preached / taught? I'm not sure we are finding thesemessages outside of the churches, and that worries me; how will ourchildren and teenagers learn about the possibility of love and hopeand joy in their lives if they are not taught about forgiveness? Iunderstand that church is not for everyone, so we must seek to findalternative ways of getting that message across...

Happy Valentine's Day My Angel last night I received a letter from you. I learned how strong

was the pain on the day we had to separate. Do you rememberthose beautiful kisses? Do you remember the last one we gave eachother between the tears. You did not dare to say a word. The tearswere suffocating you. While passing by you were at the window. The [train] guard also told me that I didn't see you. I almost thoughtyou didn't keep the promise made. I didn't dare to watch more thanonce. My poor heart was suffocated not by tears, but by a strongpassion that I couldn't resist. You knew what my beliefs were. Alsohaving to leave you again, what a pain... By the end of the year wehope this will end... Greetings and kisses Giuseppe. Enjoy thissouvenir from me. In these rough mountains you can find theseflowers.

This moving love letter was sent by Sergeant Major GiuseppeCastellani, to his wife Antonia at home in Fossato di Vico, while hewas away serving in the Italian army during the First World War. Allher life Antonia cherished this edelweiss card, which was contributedonline to Europeana 1914-1918 by their grandson Manuel Castellani.

Final ThoughtI've never made a fortuneand its probably too late nowBut I don't worry about that muchI'm happy anyhowAnd as I go along life's journeyI'm reaping better than I sowI'm drinking from my saucer'Cause my cup has overflowed

Haven't got a lot of richesand sometimes the going's toughBut I've got loving ones around meand that makes me rich enoughI thank God for His blessingsand the mercies He's bestowedI'm drinking from my saucer'Cause my cup has overflowed

O, Remember times when thingswent wrongMy faith wore somewhat thinBut all at once the dark clouds brokeand sun peeped through againSo Lord, help me not to gripeabout the tough rows that I've hoedI'm drinking from my saucer'Cause my cup has overflowed

If God gives me strength and courageWhen the way grows steep and roughI'll not ask for other blessingsI'm already blessed enoughAnd may I never be too busyto help others bear their loadsThen I'll keep drinking from my saucer" 'Cause my cup has overflowed!"
