Northern Medical Program 2013/2014
The Northern Medical Program continues to play an important role in educating physicians from the north, for the north. Here’s a look at recent accomplishments in the Peace/Liard region.
• Two recent Northern Medical Program graduates started or continued their residencies in Fort St. John, and four current UBC medical students had family practice placements in the Peace this year.
• Terri Hopkins of Fort St. John was part of the
2014 Northern Medical Program graduating class. Hopkins dreamed of being a doctor since she was a young child and is interested in practicing in a smaller community. “I never really wanted to be a doctor in a big city,” she said. Hopkins was one of 16 graduates from Northern BC this year out of a class of 33 and was the winner of the Tony Eckersley Memorial Award for Family/Emergency Medicine. This year’s class includes 23 students who are pursuing a family practice residency, including 16 in rural or semi-rural regions in Canada.
• Fort St. John Mayor Lori Ackerman was the
president of the Northern Medical Programs Trust for a one-year term in 2013-14. The NMPT helps fund student travel and other costs for students in medicine and other healthcare programs. Hopkins used NMPT funds to help travel back and forth between Fort St. John and school in Prince George. “If I didn’t have that extra money that wouldn’t have been possible and the relationships I have [in Fort St. John] wouldn’t have been as strong,” she said.
