How we live also has a big impacton our feeling of contentment. Atour recentArt of Happinesseventswe found that a core ingredientin happiness is a strong sense ofpurpose. Living sustainably gives ourlives more purpose, connectednessand well-being in so many ways. Atthe festival you will gain knowledge

    MICHELE MATTHEWS, Editor

In so many ways, I believethat connectionis theheart of sustainability. To me, living sustainably means tobe connected to our environment, one another and the systems which

govern our lives. Whether how aplastic bag comes to be, the processfrom seed to plate to soil, or how ourconsumption patterns affect someoneon the other side of the planet.

From our food and industrial systemsto our governance systemsI thinkthe basis for living sustainably is totry to understand and engage inthese systems and use our learningsto make informed decisions abouteverything from breakfast cereal andbuilding materials to where to pitch atent and town planning issues.

Sustainability is complex there arentreally any right or wrong answers, rather it is a journey on which we areall at different vantage points. I think

the key is to enjoy the view, learn asmuch as you can about other placesto visit and ensure that you share yourmaps and highlights with others alongthe way.

So, on the 8 & 9 November, we willbring the people, organisations, businesses and ideas together to

help you plan the next steps on yourjourney. Fun and sharing are, I believe, two of the most important aspectsof sustainable communities. And wehave done our best to ensure thatboth are served up generously atSustainable Living Festival 2014.

We are particularly excited aboutconnecting with MONA, EventsTasmania, Cygnet Folk Festival,Fractangular and independentartists, breaking into the night with aspectacular Festival Party on Saturday,8th November. For the very irst time

in our 16 year history, we will throwopen the festival gates from 69pm celebrating sustainability with some ofTassies inest performers, artists, foodand drink.

Sustainability is not about doingwithout and sitting in a cold dark roomto save power. Its about doing thingsbetter, savouring the good times andjoyously sharing with others.

I am so grateful for all of the amazingpeople, organisations and businesseswho have made our festival possible. An enormous thank you to all ofour sponsors, partners, supporters, performers, presenters and dedicatedvolunteers!

Look forward to seeing you atSustainable Living Festival 2014.

SoLuTiOnSChoosing the rightbuilding material tosuit your site, budgetand aesthetics is veryimportant. In Tasmania, 65% of homes are

brick so having more sustainablealternatives available, which are madelocally, is a great option for thosewanting to build with bricks.

As a locally owned and operatedbusiness for over 100 years inTasmania, K&D Warehouse supportslocal communities. Subsequently, they distribute a range of sustainablebuilding products, for use in newhomes, commercial developments, and renovations.

K&D is the Southern agent forTasmanian Manufacturer Island Block

& Paving, who have designed and asustainable range of environmentallyfriendly building products.

The Sustainable Products for theFuture range of blocks, bricks, paversand retaining wall products use over40% recycled glass derived frombeer, wine and other waste containerglass. The manufacturing processsigniicantly reduces the 20,000tonnes of waste glass currently addedto landill in Tasmania each year. This also reduces the use of naturalresources such as sand and metal

dust to create these unique products.

Island Block & Paving ManagingDirector Mr Thurlow said We areextremely excited about this rangeand the opportunities it has openedup Australia wide. With assistancefrom K&D who distribute theproducts, and Hazell Bros who supplythe recycled glass, it has been a realteam effort from three Tasmanianbusinesses to get to where we are

today. The manufacturing processalso reduces cement usage by 10%,limiting carbon dioxide emissionswhilst still achieving excellent productstrength.

The product is creating hugeinterest from architects and buildersinterstate trying to source uniquebut sustainable building productsthat meet their Green star designrequirements. We ind that more andmore builders are after products thatnot only look good and stand the testof time, but are clean and green, goodto the environment and will help meetbuilding standards in a cost effectiveway.

We think the Sustainable Productsfor the Future range its in perfectlywith Tasmanias clean green imageand really hope that the local buildingindustry and government authoritieswithin Tasmania appreciate the longterm beneits that these productscan bring to our state. Mr Thurlowsaid Island Block Paving has a historyof design and innovation with manyof their patented wall systems beingmanufactured around Australia for the

last 10 years.Sustainable Products for the Futurehave achieved Global Greentagcertiication and are the only certiiedmasonry products manufacturedin Australia. The full range can bepurchased at K&D Bricks & Blocks, 10Derwent Park Road Glenorchy, Ph 6228 7828.

If you want to savemoney on your utilitybills and want to reduceyour household carbonemissions then an ApricusSolar Hot Water System

could be the answer.Water heating accounts for around25% of the average householdenergy bill in Tasmania and the latestresearch suggests solar hot water canprovide Tasmanians between 50%to 75% of hot water needs in winterand 100% in summer all withoutrunning costs or creating greenhousegas emissions. Any shortfall betweensupply and demand can be madeup using electric, gas or even beconnected to your wood heater, sohouseholders need not worry about

running out of hot water duringovercast or rainy conditions.

Solar hot water systems use the sunsrays, or irradiation, to heat waterthrough a solar collector generallylocated on the roof of the property.Ideally the solar collector would faceas close to north as possible andremain un-shaded throughout theday (or you could even have your tankinstalled inside to reduce heat loss). The Apricus evacuated tube systemhas a vacuum between two glasslayers and works similar to a thermoslask allowing it to retain up to 95%of the solar energy they capture! This means that in cold climates, likeours, heat is retained and not lost intothe atmosphere. The collectors arealso rated to handle frost down to-15C without the use of glycol whichdramatically reduces maintenance ofthe system.

Hot water systems are an essentialappliance in any home and ongoingrunning costs must be a majorfactor to consider in the decisionmaking process. Much like fueleconomy is considered whenpurchasing a new car, Australianfamilies need to ind the rightbalance between upfront andongoing costs when purchasing anew hot water system.

The graph below demonstrates theannual running costs of a variety ofwater heating options, with solarcoming out with the lowest price!

Prioritise yourhousehold thermaleiciency spending! Most houses can be made moreenergy eicient and comfortable, but deciding which items or servicesto invest in irst is often a dauntingquestion. Here are some tips from ourfriends at Home Eiciency Group tohelp you.

    1. Ceiing InuationAs a rule of thumb, a top up of ceilinginsulation adds about 6 or 7 degreesto your home. As 35% of heat is lostthrough the ceiling, this is prioritynumber one. In summer, insulationacts as a heat shield, so typicallykeeps your home around 5C cooler.

    2. Undefl Inuation

Underloor insulation is a particularpriority if you have exposedloorboards or hard loor surfaces, such as tiles. If you have good access, then adding sub-loor insulationusually adds about 3C to the ambienttemperature of the home. Typical sub-loor insulation is the equivalent ofhaving 11 carpets with underlay!

    3. Heat Ditibution,Efficient Heate HeateConoidationHeaters and hot water cylinders are

usually the main costs on your winterutility bills. Bills are usually muchhigher when a house has ineicientheaters used over much of the day,or lots of smaller heaters scatteredaround the home. One option is toconsolidate heating to one main heatsource (for example a wood heaterfor a larger house or a heat pumpfor a standard house) and use an AirCirculation System to distribute airto the main rooms. This will reduceyour primary heating costs and allowyou to turn off or discard secondaryheaters around your home.

For more information on comfort andenergy savings homeefficiencygroup.com.auor call 1300 968 060.

Protecting your homefrom draughts is one ofthe easiest, cheapestand most effectivethings you can do.Draughts account for 25% to 40% of

heat loss in the home particularly ifyou live in an older home.

While there are short term solutionslike door snakes and stick on seals, longer lasting solutions tailoredspeciically for old and heritagewooden windows and doors will giveyou optimal comfort. This is whereSealasash specialise.

Their draught sealing system isretroitted into existing woodenwindows, of all kinds and condition,to make them work properly. Thesystem will stop draughts and rattling,

assist with noise reduction and evenimprove movement when openingand closing. Improvements may be sogood that you dont need to upgradeglass or resort to double-glazing.

Many people think their windowsare in such bad condition that theyneed replacing, however Sealasashmake repairs where needed andhavent yet encountered a windowthat they couldnt ix. They attend tocords or spirals, weights, pulleys andwoodwork while installing the draughtseals and can also replace glass withmore energy eicient solutions ifrequired.

Their system allows for renovationsthat are sympathetic to architecturalheritage and encourage sustainableuse of existing material. Woodenwindows have great thermalproperties, far better than PVC oraluminium, which help keep a housewarm in the winter and cool in thesummer.

    We basically take out

the old windows andcompletely recondition them.

Reconditioning windows in thisway is really popular in the UK,

and we love to see these olderhomes cared for. We take realpride in the work we do.

6 Reasons Why Coal Will Struggle

Since peaking in January 2011, theprice of thermal coal has fallen 51%.Price is driven by the simple dynamicsof supply and demand and supplyhas continued to outpace demand.Below, Australian Ethical Investment

highlights reasons for this imbalanceand the factors that shape coalsdecline.

    1. Production not falling fastenough.Global production is notcoming oline quickly. In Australia, approximately 40% of exportedcoal is unproitable.

    2. Japan diversifying its energymix.Whilst Japan has rampedup consumption, this is onlytransitional demand until it restartsnuclear power plants and builds the65 gigawatts of solar planned.

    3. Electricity consumption falling indeveloped countries. The weakglobal economy has undoubtedlyreduced power consumption butmuch of the fall is the result ofincreased energy eiciency andbehavioural changes.

    4. Coal friendless at home andoverseas. This is best seen in theUS they export almost threetimes as much as a decade ago.Tightening EPA legislation requiresexisting power plants to upgradeand higher standards for newplants. These extra cost incursionswill essentially prevent theconstruction of new US coal iredplants. The EU has targeted a 40%reduction in emissions, from 1990levels, by 2030. This will naturallyforce out the highest emitters orprevent their growth, leaving coalfriendless in Europe too.

    5. Indias new PM is pro-renewables.Indias new Prime Minister Modiis pro-solar and renewables. Hisplan to bring electricity to 400million people via solar is ambitiouswithout equal.

    6. Is China turning away from coal?China has announced that it willban coal-ired power from Beijingby 2020.

Ahe to Ahe Si Feet Unde?Cremating the average sized manpumps into the air just over 50 kg ofgreenhouse gas. This might not seemlike a big amount, but multiply 50 kgby the number of people crematedaround the world and things beginto look a bit more sobering. And

this igure doesnt even account forthe amount of fuel used to raise thetemperature of the furnace neededto consume human remains fully. Nordoes it take into account the carbondioxide released from the burnedcasket.

Cremation is causing particularenvironmental problems in India, where Hindu tradition dictates thebody be consumed by ire on awooden pyre. With Indias enormousand expanding population, thispractice leads to the consumptionof an estimated 50 million trees and

produces half a million tonnes of ashand eight million tonnes of CO

    each year.

Being buried in the ground can alsocome with a hefty environmentalprice tag. Along with contributing tourban sprawl, it consumes more fossilfuels than cremation due to it being alabour-intensive operation. Accordingto one recent study, over the courseof a typical cemetery burial, carbondioxide emissions actually exceedthose involved in a cremation.

Green burial means that the body, which is not embalmed, is buried inan eco-friendly casket or shroud in amanner that allows it to return to theearth as quickly as possible.

Provide a vegetarianoption. 150g serve of meat(one small steak) can takeover 200 litres of water toproduce and creates 5kg ofcarbon pollution. Is your ishsustainable? Check outamcs.org.au

If youre hosting a picnic or

hosting an event outside of yourhome choose somewhere localthat people can walk or getpublic transport to, itll also makeyou a real mate by not allowingyour guests to mix driving withalcohol.

The UK Sustainable DevelopmentCommission identiied three mainareas where consumers can have thegreatest impact:

    1. Reduce consumption ofmeat and dairy products. Some meats, like kangaroo, chickenand pork, in that order, use less

energy and emit signiicantly lessgreenhouse gases than beef, lamband goat production.

    2. Reduce consumption of foodsof low nutritional value(eg: sweet snacks, fatty foods, mostbought drinks)

    3. Reduce food waste. On average every man, woman andchild in Australia wastes around400g of food every day. Generallyit is either food that could be usedanother day or it is perfectly goodfood discarded because of the date

    on the packet.

Organic farms tend to be carbon-sinksor carbon-neutral, though with loweryields, whereas conventional farms arecarbon emitters. So while I love localproduce, organically grown from myveggie patch where possible, Australianfreighted organic produce is also good, and a lot better than fresh producelown or shipped from overseas.

For dried and processed foods it istrickier. Sea freight is much moreeicient than road freight. So, forexample, the carbon emissions inbringing a carton of dried apricots bysea from Turkey to Melbourne are notmuch different from bringing a similarbox from Mildura by truck. In this casefarm and factory productivity andtechniques are more important thanfood miles.
