The 2014 season marks Jim Duffy’s third season at the helm of the Jaspers. In his first season, Manhattan captured the 2012 MAAC championship in dramat-ic fashion and reached its third NCAA Regional appearance in the previous six seasons.

In 2013, Duffy guided the Jaspers through an injury-plagued season, in which Manhattan still won 24 games. Duffy mentored All-MAAC first team selec-tions Ramon Ortega and Nick Camastro, who finished their Manhattan careers by cementing their names in Manhattan’s offensive record books.

Duffy made a splash in his first year in the dugout, leading the Jaspers to their third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The landmark season also featured the only undefeated home record in NCAA Division I in 2012 as the Jaspers recorded a perfect 18-0 mark at Van Cortlandt Park.

The Jaspers made conference history in their title run by rallying through the elimination bracket of the MAAC Tour-nament. Duffy’s club became the first team to win four games in three days to

earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Manhattan was sent to the Columbia Regional to face two-time defending National Champion South Carolina.

Manhattan won 33 games and posted an 18-6 conference record as it capture the 2012 MAAC regular season title in Duffy’s first season. He mentored five All-MAAC first team selections and seven MAAC Academic Honor Roll recipients. Two players from Duffy’s championship roster went on to sign professional base-ball contracts in 2012.

Duffy came to Riverdale after seven seasons as an assistant coach at Seton Hall, where he helped the Pirates win the Big East championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

Duffy began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater in 2001. That season, Seton Hall won its first Big East championship since 1987. In 2003, he was promoted to full-time assistant coach. Duffy worked primarily with the Pirates’ hitters and outfielders while also assisting with recruiting, scouting and team travel. Nine of Duffy’s players eventually moved

on to professional baseball careers.He served as the head coach of the

Monmouth Monarchs of the ABCCL collegiate summer league from 2004-10, leading the squad to a league champion-ship in 2005.

Duffy was a four-year starter at first base for the Pirates earning his bachelor’s de-gree from Seton Hall in 2001. He is Seton Hall’s all-time leader in putouts (1,387) while also ranking second in hits (247) and at-bats (709) and fifth in runs scored (165). A three-time All-Big East selection, Duffy was named New Jersey College Player of the Year and earned All-America honors after finishing ninth in the nation with a .429 batting average in 1995. The following season, he had a school-record 29-game hitting streak.

In 1997, he signed a free agent contract with the Houston Astros. He was an out-fielder in the Astros system for four years, advancing as high as Double-A before retiring in 2000.

Duffy and his wife Danielle have a daughter, Jadan and son, Brennan.


ELVYS QUEZADAAssistant Coach • Third Season • Seton Hall ‘10

Elvys Quezada is in his third season as the Manhattan pitching coach. In his first year in Riverdale, Quezada helped lead the Jaspers to program’s third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. Manhattan won 33 games and earned the league’s regular season championship after posting an 18-6 conference record.

Manhattan was the only team in NCAA Division I to post an undefeated home record going 18-0 at Van Cortlandt Park in 2012. Quezada’s pitchers carried a 3.00 earned run average with 120 strikeouts at home in his first year with the program.

Quezada mentored a pitching staff that ranked in the top half of the conference in ERA (3.38) and opposing batting average (.256) against MAAC

opponents. The Jaspers’ relievers set a program record with 13 saves. Quezada had one pitcher earn All-MAAC first team honors and a second pitcher named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region First Team, who went on to sign a professional baseball contract.

A seven year veteran of professional baseball, Quezada was a two-time Major League draft pick, once by the New York Mets in 2002, and again by the New York Yankees in 2003. Each year, he was selected in the 15th round. The pitcher spent five years in the Yankees minor league organizations before spending parts of two seasons with the Mets. He also competed in independent leagues in the United States and in the Dominican Winter

League in the 2005-06 seasons.Prior to being drafted, Quezada was a standout

pitcher at Seton Hall, where he was coached by Jaspers’ second year head coach Jim Duffy. Quezada helped lead the Pirates to two NCAA Tournament berths in 2000 and 2001, including a Big East championship in 2001. Quezada was named a captain in both his junior and senior years.

Quezada’s coaching background includes working as an instructor with “B’S Baseball Academy” in Sanford, Conn., along with numerous youth clinics and starting camps such as his own EQuilibrium Athletics in Florida.

Quezada earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Seton Hall in 2010.

JUSTIN ECHEVARRIAVolunteer Assistant Coach • First Season • Stony Brook ‘10

Justin Echevarria joined the Manhattan College baseball staff in January 2014 as a volunteer assistant coach on Jim Duffy’s staff, working primarily with Manhattan’s catchers and hitters.

A Long Island native, Echevarria was selected in the 40th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres after a stellar collegiate career at Stony Brook.

Echevarria was a three-year starter at Stony Brook behind the plate, helping lead the Seawolves

to NCAA Regionals appearances in 2008 and 2010. Echevarria led the America East Conference in throwing out potential base stealers in three of his four years at Stony Brook, where he nailed more than 40 percent of runners trying to advance. His proficiency behind the dish allowed him to earn a spot on the Johnny Bench Award watch list, where he was selected among the nation’s finest catchers.

RENE RUIZAssistant Coach • Fourth Season • Manhattan ‘07

Former Jasper standout Rene Ruiz ‘07 is in his fourth season as an assistant coach on the Manhattan College baseball staff. He is also the Jaspers’ recruiting coordinator.

Ruiz is the only member of the Manhattan baseball program to be a part of all three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, two as a coach and one as a player.

Ruiz was an All-MAAC shortstop during his career in Riverdale and helped the Jaspers win the program’s first MAAC title in 2006. The Miami native spent two years playing professionally with the majority of his work in the Continental Baseball League before his return to Riverdale.

As an assistant coach, Ruiz helped lead Manhattan to back-to-back MAAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances (2011 & 2012).

The Jaspers earned the MAAC Regular-Season title both years, posting a combined 38-8 record (.826) against conference opponents.

In his first season as an assistant coach, Ruiz helped raise the team fielding percentage from .955 to .969 as the Jaspers made their championship run finishing with 34 wins. Then in 2012, Manhattan posted a .968 fielding percentage and went on to win 33 games. Ruiz has helped mentor six All-MAAC infielders, including the 2012 All-MAAC First Team middle infield.

As a student-athlete, Ruiz served as the starting shortstop and helped the Manhattan baseball program advance to the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals after defeating Nebraska and current New York Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain in the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, Ruiz was named to the 2007 All-MAAC Second Team after recording one

of the highest fielding percentages (.965) among Division I shortstops.

The product of nationally ranked Miami Southridge Senior High School played a total 77 games professionally for the Big Bend Cowboys of the Continental Baseball League between the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Ruiz started 53 games, scored 42 runs, had 16 RBI and stole eight bases. He started 24 games for the Cowboys in 2010 and was named a mid-season All-Star after batting .396 with a .480 on-base percentage and 14 RBI.

Ruiz made a brief stop in the American Association spending 12 games with the Wichita Wingnuts, before finishing the 2010 campaign in the Can-Am League for the Sussex Skyhawks.


2013: Started all 52 games at shortstop …collected five hits at Pittsburgh including two multi-hit games, three RBI and a double … went 2-for-4 with two RBI on March 9 vs. Youngstown State ... drove in 13 runs during the season … went 2-for-3 in game one vs. Marist on April 6 … hit safely in 12 of 16 games from April 6-27.

2012: All-MAAC First Team selection... one of only two Jaspers to start all 60 games... hit .305 during the regular-season... finished with a .283 batting average, which was the third highest on the team... ranked third on the team with 53 hits, 32 runs scored and eight stolen bases... knocked in 22 RBI and drew 18 walks... hit .315 with a .419 on-base percentage starting all 24 MAAC games... started first 10 games of the season at second base and the last 50 at shortstop... committed only 13 errors, and only five in the last 26 games of the season... second on the team with 15 multi-hit games... posted five multi-RBI performances... held a season-high six game hit streak from April 6-14... had six 3-hit performances during the regular-sea-son... recorded a .387 on-base percentage... finished third in the MAAC with nine sacri-fice bunts... posted a .419 on-base percent-age and was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts

in MAAC games... recorded nine doubles with a career-high three doubles at Florida Atlantic (2/25) ... scored two of the Jaspers’ three runs in the MAAC championship game (5/27), including the game winning run in the top of the 11th inning sending Manhattan past Canisius 3-2... drove in a season-high two runs in wins over Hofstra (3/21), NYIT (3/28), Iona (4/2), Sacred Heart (4/10) and Albany (4/25).

2011: Started 50 of 52 appearances... posted 26 hits, 11 RBI and had four doubles... com-mitted only four errors at second base and had a team-best .982 fielding percentage... ranked second in the MAAC with 14 sacrifice bunts... started all 22 MAAC regular-sea-son contests and posted a .328 on-base percentage in conference games... led the MAAC with nine sacrifice bunts in league contests... logged three multi-hit games and had two multi-RBI performances... held a season-high four game hit streak from May 20 - 26... drove in the first two runs with a base hit in Manhattan’s 5-1 victory over Siena (5/28) in the MAAC Championship game... made first career start and logged first career hit in season opening win at Western Caro-lina (2/25)... posted a season-high two hits on three occasions versus Western Carolina

(2/27), Siena (3/26) and East Tennessee State (5/1)... recorded season-high two RBI against Villanova (3/20) and Siena (5/28).

BEFORE MANHATTAN: Lettered four years at Florida Christian playing for head coach Ernie Padron... helped the Patriots to a 25-4 record, the 2A District Championship and a top-50 national ranking as a senior... hit .400 with two home runs, stole 15 bases and was named Second Team All-Dade County as a senior... won the team’s Golden Glove Award his senior year yielding just two errors in 29 games... recorded a .365 batting average, drove in 18 runs and stole 11 bases as a junior... helped Florida Christian to the 3A District Championship as a sophomore and junior... played summer ball with the Florida Bombers for head coach Emilio Fernandez.

ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS


The Manhattan College baseball team has, through the years, produced some of the most successful athletes that the school has known. What follows is a list of former diamond dwellers that have made it to the professional ranks.

TOM LOUGHRAN - Played for the New York Gothams in the 1884 season, appearing in nine games.

BILL FINLEY - Played for the New York Giants in the 1886 season, appearing in 13 games.

JACK TAYLOR - Pitched nine seasons for the New York Giants (1), Philadelphia Phillies (6), St. Louis Browns (1), and Cincinnati Reds (1) from 1891-1899. Posted a 120-117 lifetime record, with a 4.23 ERA, including three straight 20-win sea-sons. Recorded a 26-14 record with 33 complete games in the 1895 season.

PETE McBRIDE - Pitched for the Cleveland Spiders (1898) and the St. Louis Perfectos (1899) for one season each, appearing in a total of 12 games.

HENRY THIELMAN - Pitched for the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds in the 1902 season, and the Brooklyn Superbas in the 1903 season. Won nine games in 25 appearances for the Reds in 1902.

LUIS CASTRO - Played the 1902 season for the Philadelphia Athletics as an infielder, posting a .245 average with 15 RBI over 43 games. Was the first Latin American to play in the Major Leagues.

DOC SCANLAN - Pitched eight seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2), Brooklyn Superbas (5), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1) from 1903-1911, compiling a 65-71 record and a 3.00 ERA with 15 shutouts and five saves. His best season was in 1906, when he posted an 18-13 record with a 3.19 ERA and six shutouts.

CY FERRY - Pitched two seasons for the Detroit Tigers (1904) and Cleveland Naps (1905), appear-ing in four games

JIM MULLIN - Split the 1904 season between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Washington Senators, and played the 1905 season with the Senators. Finished his career with a .197 average as an infielder, appearing in 118 games.

JAKE THIELMAN - Pitched two seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals (1905-06), two for the Cleve-land Naps (1907-08) and appeared in one game for the Boston Red Sox (1908), posting a 30-28 lifetime record, with a 3.16 ERA.

JASPERS IN THE PROSPAT DUFF - Had one at-bat with the Washington Senators in the 1906 season.

TOM O’HARA - Played the 1906-07 seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals as an outfielder, posting a .252 batting average in 62 games.

EDDIE ZIMMERMAN - Played the 1906 season with the St. Louis Cardinals and the 1911 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, both at third base. He appeared in 122 of his 127 career games in 1911, batting .185 with three homers and 36 RBI.

COTTON MINAHAN - Pitched in two games for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1907 season.

CHRIS MAHONEY - Pitched in one game for the Boston Red Sox in the 1910 season.

GEORGE CHALMERS - Played seven seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies (1910-1916), posting a 29-41 record with a 3.41 ERA over 121 games. Won a career-high 13 games in the 1911 season.

DICK COTTER - Played 46 career games at catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (1911) and Chicago Cubs (1912), posting a .280 career batting average.

JIM HANLEY ‘10 - Pitched one game in the 1913 season for the New York Yankees.

CHARLES MEARA ‘08 - Played four games for the New York Yankees in the 1914 season, batting .286 over four games.

JOHN “BUDDY” HASSETT ’33 - Played seven Major League seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers (3), Bos-ton Bees/Braves (3) and New York Yankees (1) from 1936-1942. His lifetime batting average was .292

over 929 games as an infielder/outfielder. Batted .333 in the 1942 World Series with the Yankees.

NICK TREMARK ‘34 - Played outfield for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1934-36. Had a lifetime batting average of .250.

ANTON KARL ‘35 - Pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves from 1943-47. Posted an 18-23 record with 26 saves and a 3.51 lifetime ERA.

JOE GALLAGHER - Played during the 1939 and 1940 seasons with the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns and Brooklyn Dodgers. An out-fielder, Gallagher was best known as a long-ball threat off the bench. Hit 26 doubles, five triples and 16 homers while batting .273, with a slugging percentage of .446.

XAVIER RESCIGNO ‘37 - Pitched for the Pitts-burgh Pirates from 1943-1945. Had 19 wins as a starter and a 14-12 record with 16 saves as a reliever.

CHUCK SCHILLING ‘61 - Hit .240 as a second baseman with the Boston Red Sox from 1961-65. Broke Jackie Robinson’s second base fielding record.

BOB CHLUPSA ‘67 - Relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1970 and 1971 sea-sons. Drafted in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1967 draft

MARK CONNORS ’71 - For-mer New York Yankee pitch-ing coach. Had been a roving minor league pitching coach for years. Head coach at the University of Tennessee in 1988-89. Currently serving as the bullpen coach for the Texas Rangers.

TOM WADDELL ‘81 - Relief pitcher for the Cleve-land Indians from 1984-86. Posted a 15-11 lifetime record. Signed a $350,000 arbitration contract in 1987.

MIKE MURPHY ‘83 - Drafted by the Cleveland In-dians in the 18th round as a pitcher. Spent three years in the Indian’s minor league system.

NEIL LONGO ‘98 - A ninth round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 1998 Major League Draft.

SCOTT MARTIN ‘01 - Signed by the Long Island Ducks. In

2002, signed as a free agent with the San Diego Padres. Played the 2003 season for the Brockton Rocks of the Independent League.

RYAN DARCY ‘03 - Signed by the New Jersey Jackals of the Northeast League following the 2003 season.

MATT CUCURULLO ‘04 - Signed by the Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast League following his 2004 college season. Played for the Brockton Rox in the 2005 season.

MIKE PARISI ‘05 - Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Won a Florida State League Championship with the Palm Beach Car-dinals in the 2005 season. Played the 2006 season with the Double A Springfield Car-dinals of the Texas League,

and was the winning pitcher in the inaugural game at the new Busch Stadium, featuring the Cardinals Double A vs. Triple A squads. Reported to the Cardinals’ Major League Spring Training Camp in 2007. Played the 2007 season with the AAA Memphis Redbirds, and was named to the 40-man roster on November 20, 2007. Made Major League debut with St. Louis Cardinals on May 5, 2008 versus the Colorado Rockies. Appeared in 12 games for the Cardinals in 2008. Reassigned to the Memphis Redbirds of the Pa-

CHRIS GASKIN ‘05 - Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 23rd round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Played with the Short Season Class A Boise Hawks (Northwest League) during the 2005 sea-son. Played for the New Haven County Cutters of the Can-Am League in 2006 and 2007.

STEVE BRONDER ‘05 - Signed into the Chicago Cubs organization. Played for the Mesa Cubs in the Arizona Rookie League in the summer of 2005, before playing with the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League in 2006.

CHRIS CODY ‘06 - Draft-ed by the Detroit Tigers in the eighth round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Played the 2006 season for the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League. Was named a Full A Mid-West League All-Star team

in 2007 before being promoted to Advanced A and subsequently being traded to the Milwaukee Brewer organization for a Major League reliever. Began 2008 season with West Virginia Power, a Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Mil-waukee Brewers. Promoted to Brevard County Manatees of Class A+ Florida State League and led organization with 1.81 ERA. Named Milwau-kee Brewers Organizational Pitcher of the Year in 2008. Promoted to Triple A Nashville Sounds in 2009 after starting the season with Double A Huntsville Stars. Named Southern League Pitcher of the Week while with Huntsville. Played the 2010 season in Double A with the Huntsville Stars. Spent part of the 2011 season with the Double A Mississippi Braves.

JOHN FITZPATRICK ‘06 - Signed as a free agent into the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2007. Was promoted to the Short Season A State College Spikes.

JESSE DARCY ‘07 - Drafted in the 38th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, and played the 2007 season for the Short Season A Hudson Valley Renegades. Played 2008 season with the

Columbus Catfish, a Class A Minor League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Named 2008 Pitcher of the Year for Tampa Bay affiliate. Played 2009 season with Class A Charlotte Stone Crabs of Florida State League.

Signed with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League for 2010 season.

NICK DERBA ‘07 - Draft-ed in the 30th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Was promoted to the Swing of the Quad Cities (Full A) after beginning the 2007 season with the Short Season A Batavia Muckdogs. Reported to St. Louis Cardinals spring training camp in 2008. Played 2008 season with Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A Advanced Florida State League. Promoted to Double A affiliate Springfield Cardinals in 2009. Promoted to Triple A Memphis Redbirds of the Cardinals organization for a brief stint in 2010 before returning to Single A Palm Beach and finishing the season in Double A with the Spring-field Cardinals. Began the 2011 season with the Double A Springfield Cardinals before finishing off the year with the Triple A Memphis Redbirds. Started the 2012 season with the Double A Springfield Cardinals and completed the season with the Triple A Memphis Redbirds.”

JOSH SANTERRE ‘07 - Signed as a free agent into the Kansas City Royals organization in 2007. Pitched for the Arizona League Royals in 2007.

MATT RIZZOTTI ‘08 - Drafted by the Philadel-phia Phillies in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. Played the 2007 season for the Williams-port Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League.

Spent 2008 season with the Lakewood Bluec-laws of Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Played for Philadelphia Phillies affiliate Clearwater Threshers of the Class A Advanced Florida State League in 2009. Finished the 2010 campaign playing in Triple A for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs of the Phila-delphia Phillies organization. Began the 2010 campaign with Clearwater and made a brief stop in Double A with the Redding Phillies. Rizzotti was added to the 2011 Phillies 40-man roster, earning an invite to Spring Training. Played the 2011 season with the Double A Reading Phillies.Began the 2012 season with the Double A New Britain Rock Cats of the Minnesota Twins organization, and finished the year with the Rochester Red Wins, the Twins Triple A affiliate. Also spent time during the 2012 campaign with the Midland RockHounds the Double A affiliate of the Oakland A’s.”

RENE RUIZ ‘07 - Signed with the Big Bend Cowboys of the Continental Baseball League for the 2009 season.

CHAD SALEM ‘11: Signed with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League, playing the final 15 games of the 2011 season.

ANTHONY VEGA: “Drafted in the 30th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Played the 2012 season with the Class A Aberdeen IronBirds of the New York-Penn League.”

TAYLOR SEWITT ‘12: “Signed professional contract to play independent ball for the Gary Railcats of the Northern League.”
