2 – NC Blueberry Festival – June 21, 2014
It’s here, the 2014 NC Blueberry Festival!
by Olivia Dawson, NC Blueberry Festival Association Coordinator
Welcome to the 11th Annual North Carolina Blueberry FestivalA Message from the Mayor...
We in Burgaw are delighted to host this wonderful festival in our historic town center. It gives us a chance to show how beautiful a place our home town is, full of small-town charm, history, friendly people and interesting architecture.
We hope the festival has everything you and your family enjoy, with a large variety of vendors, children’s activities, great food, live entertainment and of course, fresh blueberries. You can visit our shops, restaurants, historic buildings and parks and maybe even take a stroll on our walking trail.
So enjoy your time in Burgaw and come back to visit us sometime. Burgaw is a great town, year round.
- Eugene Mulligan, Mayor Town of Burgaw
2 – NC Blueberry Festival – June 21, 2014 NC Blueberry Festival – June 21, 2014 – 3
This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, once again the third Saturday in June, on Burgaw’s Historic Courthouse Square.
When you ask many locals what one of their favorite things about Burgaw is, the first thing that comes to many minds is the North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The North Carolina Blueberry Festival continues to grow in attendance and popularity. It has been selected as one of the top premier family events in our state. The festival is a symbol and a tribute to the blueberry farm-ers, as well as blueberry production in the southeastern region of our state.
Last year the festival once again had picture perfect June weather. The festival was enjoyed by over 30,000 visitors and the festival proceeds again provided $20,000 in scholarships! The Blueberry industry provides a statewide eco-
nomic impact of an estimated 70 million dollars annually along with festival day generating an estimated 1.5 million dollar positive impact to the local area economy during this one day event. When visitors come into the area for the festival they not only see and visit the local shops, restaurants, and businesses in Burgaw, but those that surround the area as well, including Wallace, Wilmington, and area beaches.
This year The NC Blueberry Festival will celebrate it’s 11th Anni-versary with anticipation of an even greater festival with larger crowds, more than 125 of the top-rated craft vendors in our state, 25 food ven-dors, blueberry car & truck show, 5K Run/Walk, Tour de Blueberry bike ride, many more non-profit organizations, civic groups, edu-cational displays, not to mention the area churches with their deli-cious blueberry baked treats! As always we schedule fantastic music
and various entertainment venues to provide enjoyment for all age groups. Of course our main attrac-tion is an abundance of fresh, local blueberries provided by our kind farmers!
As always Blueberry and BBQ Sales will be available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20th, just the beginning of the events and activities that kick off the festival! Another Friday favorite to the locals as well as our visitors alike is the well-known annual Recipe Contest where many bring their cooking and creative skills, which of course has to include blueberries, in a pre-pared dish to be judged. The event is held once again at our restored Burgaw Community House adja-cent to the Courthouse Square. This is a continuing event sponsored by The Star News, with the annual BBQ Cook-Off event commencing Friday evening.
That’s right, because North Car-olina is so enthusiastic about its bar-becue, it has also been made a part of The North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The BBQ Cook-Off is an annual blueberry festival tradition, which features champion cookers throughout North Carolina where they will compete to be named the 11th Annual North Carolina Blue-berry Festival Barbecue Champs!
Last but not least we will wel-come back our Blueberry Belles and the newly crowned North Carolina Blueberry Festival Queens!
Please come join us on festival day Saturday, June 21st from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as the North Carolina Blueberry Festival celebrates it’s 11th anniversary! Come enjoy the taste of the “#1 Health Food”, good ’ole southeastern North Carolina Blueberries! The festival’s success is owed to all the volunteers, visitors, farmers, and sponsors.
It’s here, the 2014 NC Blueberry Festival!

“Each year the Festival Board strives to make the festival bigger and better. I joined the board almost three years ago becoming the Festival Coordinator last year, January 2013. This year is my second year as Festival Coordinator. Being from Burgaw and now raising my own family in Burgaw, I wanted to be involved in the community. Celebrating the 11th Annual BBQ Cook-Off The North Carolina Blueberry Festival holds a Barbecue Cook-Off each year. This event is an annual blueberry festival tradition, and has been sanc-tioned by the NC Pork Council! This year the North Carolina Blueberry Festival will proudly celebrate its 11th year! The pigs will be cooked by many local area contestants along with champion cookers from throughout North Carolina where they will compete once again to be named the 11th Annual NC Blueberry Festival Barbecue Champs! The contestants are judged on the taste of their barbecue and their sauce served with it. The pigs may be cooked with wood, charcoal, or gas. Cook-ing begins on the Friday evening before the festival, June 20, 2014, and Judging will begin at 8:00 am on the Saturday morning of the festival, June 21, 2014. After judging of the array of flavors, the meat is then chopped and served at the festival as BBQ. You will find this to be the most popular meal at the festival!

Wash blueberries and mix with ½ cup sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice and water in saucepan. Over medium heat cook and stir constantly until thick and clear; set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wrap exterior of a 9-inch springform pan (including base) in a double layer of foil; set aside. Stir together cracker crumbs, melted butter and two tablespoons sugar in a medium bowl. Press crumb mixture firmly onto bottom of pan. Bake until set, about 10 minutes. Allow to cool on a rack. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees. Put cream cheese in bowl of electric mixer, fitted with paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until fluffy, about three minutes. With mixer on low speed, add remaining 1 ½ cups sugar in a slow, steady stream. Add salt and vanilla; mix until well combined. Add two tablespoons heavy cream. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing each until just combined, but careful not to overmix. Pour cream cheese filling over crust. Drop blueberry mixture by rounded teaspoon on top. Make 8-10 puddles on top. With a wooden skewer or toothpick swirl sauce into filling Set springform pan wrapped in foil into a shallow roasting pan. Transfer to oven. Carefully ladle boiling water into roasting pan to halfway up sides of springform pan. Bake until cake is set, but still slightly wobbly in center, about 65 minutes. Transfer cake pan to rack; let cake cool completely. Refrigerate, uncovered 4-6 hours or overnight. Before un-molding, run a knife around the edge of the cake.

Employment figures re-
leased by the N.C. Depart-
ment of Commerce show
Pender County’s unemploy-
ment rate remained virtually
unchanged from February
to March this year. The rate
increased slightly from 7.6 to
7.7 percent.However the rate showed a
large improvement over last
year’s March numbers, fall-
ing from 9.3 percent in 2013.
“We have a lot of employ-
ers adding to their staff. Right
now we are busy trying to get
employers staffed along the
coast,” said Rosemary Pitt-
man of the local employment
office. “The new Walmart and
the summer season starting
has several employers staff-
ing for the summer. We are
really looking hard for people
to work on the beach.”
Pittman says there are
more jobs available than a
year ago, but there still is a
gap between the jobs that are
available and the skills of the
job seekers.
“We have been working
with the community college
to get some training avail-
able to job seekers so they
can close that gap and get
qualified for the jobs that are
available,” Pittman said.
The lack of a high school
diploma is a huge barrier to
finding a job, Pittman says.
There are also basic skills
that people need for a job.
“The community college is
adding some programs – such
as the certified production
technician – which is some-
thing that is very important
to R.C. Creations,” said Pitt-

the new seafood processor
under construction in Pender
Commerce Park. R.C. Cre-
ations is expected to hire
about 80 people to begin work
in September, expanding to
120 at the beginning of 2015.
“We are working with
them in preparation for their
hiring process to begin in late
June or July,” Pittman said.
“We anticipate working with
them in their hiring.”
The career readiness cer-
tification is also becoming
an important tool in obtain-
ing a job.“It’s a series of three tests
to verify that individuals
have skills that in the past
we may have assumed a high
school graduate would have,”
said Pittman. “But when
they get to the employer, they
don’t have those skills, such
as basic math skills. This is
what employers are looking
for.”Pittman says individuals

of land to envision a new
library building. County com-
missioners designated the
northwest portion of the Old
Topsail High School property
for the new library.
The land, currently a ball
field adjacent to the old school
building, is approximately
four acres.During Monday’s meeting,
library director Mike Taylor
and representatives of the
Friends of the Hampstead Li-
brary group asked the board
to set aside the property for
the new library.
“We have looked at a lot
of property, but it all costs
in the millions of dollars,”
Taylor said. Although there are cur-
rently no funds in the county
budget for a new library build-
ing, setting aside the property
will give library supporters
the opportunity to begin to
raise funds for a new build-
ing.In 2008, design on the new
Hampstead library facility
was underway but stopped
due to funding issues and
problems with locating the fa-
cility on the proposed school
property. The library building pro-
gram currently recommends
a 23,000 square-foot facility
with a minimum of 115 park-
ing spaces to serve the grow-
ing eastern Pender County
population for the next 30
years.

Pender County Utilities
continue to accept sign-ups
for the new water system in
the Central and Moores Creek
water districts.
Utilities director Michael
Mack says the sign up process
is moving along better than he
first expected.“We have several hundred
in hand and a lot of people
are interested, but probably
will wait to write the check
for another 30 to 60 days,”
Mack said. Mack says the preliminary
report to USDA has been sub-
mitted and he expects phase
one of the project to begin
with about 1,300 water cus-
tomers.“We will probably go back
out and do another public
meeting just to make sure peo-
ple don’t have any questions or
concerns,” Mack said. “We are
getting very positive indica-
tions from a lot of people.”
Customers in the Central
and Moores Creek water dis-
tricts can sign up for service
for $120.“We lose money on that. It
costs us more than that to put
in a meter. But that is what
we have offered the other dis-
tricts. By signing up, they are
committing to taking water
if and when it becomes avail-
able,” said Mack. “If we find
out later that we can’t serve
the property, they will receive
a refund.”
Sign-ups continue in Central,
Moores Creek water districts

Commissioners considering local bill
By Andy Pettigrew

Pender County commis-
sioners met in closed session
Monday night to discuss a
local bill the board is consider-
ing for submission to the state
legislature.The bill reportedly deals
with the tax structure of fund-
ing for fire departments in
eastern Pender County. Little
more is known about the de-
tails of the proposed bill.
Following the closed ses-
sion discussion, commission
chairman David Williams said
“we are working on drafting a
local bill, but we have decided
to wait until the next long
session of the legislature, be-
cause we feel we need to have
time for public hearing and we
don’t want to get a bill rushed
through. We need to still make
changes and have the opportu-
nity for public hearing. If we
don’t do that it would put us
having to vote on something
two weeks from now and we
don’t feel comfortable trying
to rush it through.”
