“Currently there are no rain (or other) gardens at Atholton. The hope was that

we could incorporate a student-planned garden with native plants into one (or

both) of our courtyards after the renovation of the building is completed. To the

best of my knowledge, there are no plans in place for this to occur at this time.”

“Currently, CHS does not have a rain, butterfly, vegetable or native garden.

These are things that the gardening club may consider for the future since CHS

is working towards becoming a Green School, but the club is small and fairly

new. They just planted 5 pine trees on the property as their first major project.”

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

o 2 WATER PONDS

o BUTTERFLY GARDEN

June 16, 2014

“We don't currently have a rain garden but would like one. We have a student

[that] is interested in starting a rain garden at Glenelg next year.

We don't have salt ponds but have two water ponds (4X 8 by 3.5) that we grow

water plants. The plants will then be planted into the ground. We also have

some fish in the ponds to act as biological controls.

We have a small garden that the world language department put in a few years

ago that acts as a butterfly garden.”

o ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDEN

June 9, 2014

“Yes, I am the sponsor of the Environmental Awareness Committee here at

Howard High School. We currently do not have any rain gardens here. A few

years ago, an Eagle Scout put a rain garden off the outside of our Tech Ed

building, unfortunately, I believe the lawn mowers have gotten to it overtime.

During the 2008-2009 school year planted over 400 native trees and shrubs on

an acre and a half on the school grounds. Now, not all trees and shrubs have

made it but overtime we should have a nice little forest growing. We also have

an organic vegetable garden.”

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

o 2 RAIN GARDENS

o NATIVE PLANT RIPARIAN BUFFER

o 2 VEGETABLE GARDENS

June 10, 2014

“Glenelg Country School does have two native plant rain gardens in the back of

our upper school. We put the first garden in three years ago and it is doing very

well. The second garden was put in last year and we were pleased that the

plants in our new garden survived the unusually harsh winter and it also has

many healthy looking plants. The school's community service club is mainly

responsible for maintaining it.

In addition to that, we have a 40' X 40' fenced in vegetable garden which is also

behind our upper school. The Upper School Farm and Garden Club maintains

this garden during the school year and camp programs and some summer staff

help keep it going over the summer.

There also is another smaller flower and vegetable garden behind the primary

school (We are a PreK-12 school with four divisions.) This garden is planted

each year by children in the 1st grade.

Students in the Environmental Club also have put in a native plant riparian buffer

along the banks of the small stream that runs into the school's pond.”

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

o RAIN GARDEN

o BIORETENTION

June 17, 2014

“The rain garden is currently thriving, however it is only through constant

upkeep. The county does a great job mulching and weeding, and the school has

replanted flowers and grasses. I wish I had more time to devote to the garden

with the students as it is a part of our green school plan.

We also have a retention site in the front of our building that was built as part of

the parking lot project. It was built as more of a drainage solution than rain

garden so we do not do much with it.

I would be happy to support the county's efforts in any way.”

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

o STREAM RESTORATION/WETLAND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

o REMOVED INVASIVES AND PLANTED NATIVES

o TREE PLANTINGS WITH NORTHFIELD ES

o BUTTERFLY GARDEN

June 13, 2014

“We do quite a bit regarding environmental activities at Dunloggin. 8 years ago,

we started a large scale and on-going stream restoration/ wetland construction

project that also serves as the 7th grade student service learning project. Each

year, the 7th grade students remove trash from 2 local streams that run adjacent

to school property, they remove invasive species from the area, they plant native

species throughout the year to provide wildlife habitat, and also participate in

macro-invertebrate samplings to test the water quality of the streams. 7th grade

students also take an annual field trip to the Phillip Merrill Environmental Education

Center of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The students also have worked with

the Howard County Office of Environmental Sustainability the past 2 years to plant

trees at Rockburn Park and behind Dunloggin Middle/ Northfield Elementary to

help re-establish forested buffers. For the past 2 years, a group of students with

an interest in marine biology have participated in an Oyster Gardening Project in

conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Don Meritt from the UMCES-

Horn Point Oyster Hatchery. The students provide care for cultivated oysters at

the Kentmorr Marina in Stevensville, Maryland which are then released onto

sanctuary reefs during the field trip to the Merrill Center in the spring. The oyster

gardening group follows an action plan (AR:CPS Action Research fro Community

Problem Solving) developed in part by Mr. Claude Poudrier, an educator from

Montreal, Canada along with support from the Alcoa Foundation. This past year,

we established a partnership with Mr. Brian Knox of Eco-Goats to provide a yearly

presentation on how goats provide a natural way of removing invasive species

without the use of pesticides. This past year we also participated in the Raising

Horseshoe Crabs in the Classroom project through the Maryland Dept. of Natural

Resources and next year will be participating in the Raising Striped Bass in the

Classroom program. 6th grade students take a yearly field trip to North Bay where

they learn about the importance of the Chesapeake Bay and ways to help preserve

Page 19: 2014 OES School Report

18

this precious resource. This past spring, representatives from North Bay came to

Dunloggin to help build a butterfly garden in the back of the school which will be

maintained by future 6th grade students. We were honored this past year to have

Governor O'Malley visit our school and hear presentations on all of the

environmentally friendly activities going on at DMS. Dunloggin is a Maryland

Green School and also the only U.S. Green Ribbon School in Howard County!”

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

o PLANNING A RAIN GARDEN

o VEGETABLE GARDEN

June 16, 2014

“We are currently in the planning stages to create a rain garden during the 2014-

2015 school year.

Harper's Choice Middle School has planted a vegetable garden on the school

property that is currently home to tomato, cucumber, and a variety of pepper

plants. This garden was conceived of by a group of students who stayed with it

from the planning and approval to actually requesting permission and building

and planting. We are a certified Green School and hope that the 2014-2015

school year will allow us to expand our initiatives. This year we conducted an

energy audit, participated in Earth Hour where every room in the school turned

off their lights for one hour, posted save water reminders, made sure each

classroom had recycle bins and posted reminders on all the light switches in the

building to conserve energy. The entire 7th grade weeded our flower gardens

and identified areas that needed wood chips and mulching.”

“We do not have a rain garden.

Mayfield is uniquely located at the end of a cul-de-sac surrounded by native

trees. We have labeled about 4 storm drains on the campus for staff and the

local community. We used grant money to purchase 'bankers' lamps for staff

members who requested them. A "lights out campaign" was started in the

building and supported by the morning news briefs. Weekly recycled is a major

part of our school culture. Any other efforts are documented on the school's web-

site.”

o WORKING TO RESTORE PERMEABLE PAVEMENT

June 10, 2014

“Mount View does not have a rain garden, but we do have 3 native plant gardens

and one butterfly garden that is a certified monarch waystation.

Additional land improvements include painted drains and an outdoor classroom

with benches made from recycled plastic.

We are also working to restore permeable pavement (concrete lattice style) that

has become compacted with clay soil over the years. Students are digging out

the compacted soil and adding gravel. This is a multi-year project.

We have a green school website that you can visit for even more information:

June 13, 2014

“Yes, we do have a couple of rain gardens at our school. They are located in our

recess area, between the blacktop, the main fields, and the baseball fields. We

have been learning about them over the past two years with the help of Howard

County Master Gardeners- though I would like to learn more about them.

We created a website for our Green School application this year, in case you

would like to know more about what we have been doing here in terms of

responsible stewardship. While it is comprehensive, it is not complete (as it does

not mention our rain gardens in any detail). Here is our website:

o BUTTERFLY GARDEN

June 16, 2014

“We currently have a rain garden that was created last year by a student that

was working on his Eagle Scout Project. The only thing is that the deer have

eaten all of the plants. We also have a butterfly garden. It was planted many

years ago and is still thriving because most of the plants are native.

We built an outdoor classroom and bird garden. Our students are part of Project

FeederWatch. We have also participated in the Governor's Explore and Restore

your Schoolshed Initiative this year. We have adopted a section of the Patapsco

River near the Daniel's Dam area. Students participated in a stream survey,

pulled invasive plants, and picked up trash twice a year. We have a great

partnership with Patapsco Heritage Greeenway.

We have been a Green School since 2008. Our fifth grade Earth Force Team has

improved the recycling center in the cafeteria this year. Students in 4th and 5th

grade are now composting and we have reduced the amount of trash that goes

to the landfill.

This year we have spent part of the year providing our staff with professional

development in the are of energy conservation and project based learning. Next

year's theme will be energy conservation. The teachers will take what they

learned and apply it to their classrooms.

Some of our staff also went on a Chesapeake Bay Foundation boat trip on the

Patapsco River to help raise awareness of the impact humans have on the Bay.”
