Dear Friends,Your generosity and dedication to our community’s most vulnerable children is changing lives. With your support, 2014 was a truly remarkable year.

You enabled us to find committed families for even more kids. In 2014, 195 kids placed with Amara knew the love and care of a family wholly dedicated to their safety and well-being.

You supported our efforts to advocate for better outcomes for our kids and families. With your help, we partnered with other local organizations and our state government to create a model for family and child-centered courts that will ensure better, faster outcomes for children and families.

You changed the path for kids who are suddenly removed from their homes by helping us launch the first ever Emergency Sanctuary in King County. By investing in Amara, you gave children the best hope of success at a time of terrible crisis.

You helped us develop a flourishing volunteer program that allowed us to do even more for our community’s most vulnerable kids.

You provided us with the resources to find, train, prepare, and support even more families who are changing the lives of children in foster care by becoming foster parents.

In December 2014, the Amara Emergency Sanctuary opened, the first home of its kind in King County. Named Grandese’s Place, in honor of Louise Jones McKinney, the Emergency Sanctuary is a temporary place to stay for children who have recently been removed from their homes by law enforcement or Child Protective Services. Grandese’s Place is a home where staff and volunteers ensure that the child’s needs are the center of the work.

When Jaylen and his newborn half-sister Jade needed a home, Fred and Adam said yes—despite the uncertainty of the siblings’ path to permanence. For Jaylen, moving in with his Amara family meant a fifth move in just four short years. This move would be Jaylen’s last, but his sister Jade was reunified with her birth father after 19 months. She eventually returned

to foster care and Fred and Adam welcomed Jade home, committed to keeping siblings together. Jade had found her forever family, which now also included another brother, Noah.

Fred and Adam adopted Jaylen in June 2010, Jade in March 2014, and Noah in February 2015.

Parenting a newborn made Rachel and Tony nervous. But in May 2013, when two-year-old Jayson and four-month-old Ryder were removed from their home because of their birth mom’s addiction, Rachel and Tony opened up their hearts. It was Jayson’s third time in foster care but his first time with an Amara family. In March 2015, they were adopted. Jayson and Ryder were home, forever.

Leslie came to Amara looking to become a parent through fostering and adoption. When she got the call about newborn Elijah in March 2013, she decided to make the leap as a single parent, knowing that her role was to provide a safe and loving home for him. Then, she got a call about his 3-year-old brother, Trevor. In May 2013, Trevor moved in with the growing family and finally met his baby brother. With a huge network of support surrounding them, Leslie adopted Elijah and Trevor in October 2015.

In 2014, Amara formed a Child and Family Centered Court Steering Committee as part of a project focused on strengthening our court systems to achieve better outcomes for children and families. The Child and Family Centered Court model aims to increase permanency for children in foster care and decrease the time children spend in care. It has four components: judicial leadership and training; team approach;

early resolution; and a robust evaluation. Our work in 2014 brought together community members and community partners to move the conversation forward. We have seen too many children wait for a lifelong, loving family—and we are committed to doing more to support the judicial system and achieve better outcomes for kids.
