The Long Day Closes
No star is o'er the lake, its pale watch keeping,The moon is half awake, through grey mist creeping.
The last red leaves fall round the porch of roses,The clock has ceased to sound. The long day closes.
Sit by the silent hearth in calm endeavour,To count the sound of mirth, now dumb forever.Heed not how hope believes and fate disposes:Shadow is round the eaves. The long day closes.
The lighted windows dim are fading slowly. The fire that was so trim now quivers lowly.
Go to the dreamless bed where grief reposes.Thy book of toil is read. The long day closes.

Abide With Me
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Abendlied
Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneiget.
Evening Song
Bide with us, for evening shadows darken, and the day will soon be over.
- Luke 24:29, Luther Bible
Stillness of the night
Stillness of the night, cool of theevening,
Vast shimmering of the spheres,Great silence of black vaults
Deep thinkers delight in you.The bright sun, merriment,
And noise amuse the more frivolous;Only the poet is possessedBy the love of quiet things.

Evening Bells Ring
Evening bells ring deep in the forest, The birds, as night falls, pull the bell ropes, Deep tones from cuckoos in the thickets, The loveliest notes by nightingales sung.
Each woodland branch is sprinkled with birdsong, And every leaf with song is dripping;
Light from the moon hangs in the branches, And paints with silver every dewdrop.
All now is still and lightly sleeping, Dreams rise and sparkle in the treetops,
Only a timid doe still grazes, And bathes in the dew of the forest.
All of the birds are sleeping soundly, The forest too at last lies sleeping.
Were there a single nightingale note, Then the trees would awaken from rest.
Even the doe has ceased her calling, All birds are quiet: their bell ropes are ‘up’;
All that remains of day are echoes, And Nature is peacefully sleeping.

Nox Aurumque
Aurum,Infuscatum et obscurum,
Canens noctis,Canens mortis,
Acquiescens canendo…
Et angelum somnit aurorarum etbellorum,
Saeculorum aurorum fundit lacrimas,Lacrimas rerum bellorum.
O arma!O lamina aurata!
Gestu graves nimium,Graves nimium volatu.
Aurum,Infuscatum et torpidum
Suscita!Dilabere ex armis in alam!
Volemus iterum,Alte supra murum;
Angeli renascentes et exultantes as alasAurararum,Aurorum,
Somniorum.
Aurum,Canens alarum,
Canens umbrarum.
Gold, Tarnished and dark,
Singing of night, Singing of death,
Singing itself to sleep…
And an angel dreams of dawnings, and ofwar.
She weeps tears of the golden times Tears of the cost of war.
O Shield! O gilded blade!
You are too heavy to carry Too heavy for flight.
Gold, tarnished and weary, Awaken!
Melt from weapon into wing! Let us soar again,
High above this wall; Angels reborn and rejoicing
With wings made Of dawn, Of gold,
Of dream.
Gold, Singing of wings,
Singing of shadows…

Heavenly Light
Sent from heaven, thy rays were given On great and small to shine, O Light Divine!
May each soul in sorrow’s night see the heavenly light! Thou blessing to all creation, lead us to our salvation!
All those whose feet may falter, lead unto the sacred altar! Oh, shine from above, Divine Light of love!
Show us the way unto our God, we pray! Thou our beacon and guide shalt be!
Light Divine, we praise Thee!
- from Russian Phos Hilaron (Свете Тихий), translated by Alice Mattullath

The Creation
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was waste and void; and darkness upon the face of the deep:
and the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
- Genesis 1:1-3, English Revised Version

O Nata Lux
O nata lux de lumine,Jesu redemptor saeculi,
Dignare clemens supplicumLaudes precesque sumere.
Qui carne quondam contegiDignatus es pro perditis,Nos membra confer effici
Tui beati corporis.
O Light born of Light,Jesus, redeemer of the world,
with loving-kindness deign to receivesuppliant praise and prayer.
Thou who once deigned to be clothedin flesh
for the sake of the lost, grant us to be members
of thy blessed body.
Hail, Gladdening Light
Hail! gladdening Light, of His pure glory pouredWho is th'immortal Father, heavenly, blest,Holiest of Holies--Jesus Christ our Lord!
Now we are come to the Sun's hour of rest;The lights of evening round us shine;
We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit divine!
Worthiest art thou at all times to be sungWith undefiled tongue,
Son of our God, giver of life, alone:Therefore in all the world thy glories, Lord, they own. Amen.

This Little Light of Mine
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
All through the night, I'm gonna let it shine.Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
My God gave it to me, I'm gonna let it shine. In my home, all over the world, let it shine.
Light of a Clear Blue Morning
It's been a long dark night, and I've been waiting for the morning. It's been a long hard fight, but I see a brand-new day a-dawning.I've been looking for the sunshine 'cause I ain't seen it in so long.
Ev'rything's gonna work out fine.Ev'rything's gonna be alright, it's gonna be okay.
I can see the light of a clear blue morning.I can see the light of a brand-new day.
I can see the light of a clear blue morning.Ev'rything's gonna be alright, it's gonna be okay.

O Day Full of Grace
O day full of grace, which we behold now gently to view ascending, thou over the earth thy reign unfold, good cheer to all mortals lending, that children of light in ev'ry clime may prove that the night is ending.
How blest was that gracious midnight hour when God in our flesh was given;then flushed the dawn with light and pow'r that spread o'er the darkened heaven;
Then rose o'er the world that sun divine which gloom hath driven.
Yea, were ev'ry tree endowed with speech, and every leaflet singing, they never with praise his worth could reach,
though earth with their praise be ringing.Who fully could praise the light of life who light to our souls is bringing?
Praise the Lord! With joy we depart for the promised land. And there we shall walk in endless light.
