BOBCAT TIDBITS
Tori Hale, who was in her second season with the Bobcats in 2013, has made an impact as well on the all-time charts. With a team-leading nine assists to end the season, Hale tied Jessica Armendariz for the most assists in a single-season at Texas State. Armendariz set that mark back in 2000 after the program’s second season.
With 15 career assists, Hale is in a tie for second, just two assists shy of Britney Curry’s record of 17 set from 2007-10.
Hale finished the season named Second-Team All-Conference along with teammate Lynsey Curry. Curry finished the season with a team-high seven goals, three of which occurred during conference play. She also led the team with 79 total shots and 15 total points. Senior Gabbi Cottee was second on the points list with 14 (5 G, 4 A).
Brown also made her mark on the history books at Texas State, becoming the first student-athlete at Texas State to be named to the Sun Belt Leadership Team. The award is given to a letter-winning student-athlete, based on leadership, sportsmanship, community service, citizenship, academic excellence and any other qualities valued by the institution.
INCOMING CLASSFor the 2014 season, the Bobcats will add Kassi Hormuth, Elizabeth Havenhill, Maddi Nordstrom, Savanah Warnick, Kira Zaplac, Rachel Grout, Chandler Cooney, Alyssa Phelan, Brooke Ramsay, and Devin Hemker to this season’s roster. Ramsey, an outside midfielder is a native of Colleyville, Texas where she played high school soccer for Grapevine High School. She was named as a First-Team All-District her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons along with earning Second-Team All-District honors as a freshman. A native of Houston, Texas, Cooney comes to Texas State as an outside back/center back where she played at Cy-Fair High School. Cooney was named to the 2013 TASCO Second-Team All-Region and the First-Team All-District, both as a defender.
Phelan will join the Bobcats after playing at Klein Oak High School. In 2011 and 2012, her squad was the 13-5A District Champions and in 2012, her team went to the final four. In her time at Klein Oak, Phelan has played in 47 games, has scored 10 goals, and has recorded 22 total points.
Hemker, an outside midfielder out of Hutto, Texas, comes to Texas State with playing experience at Hutto High School. In 2011, Hemker was named the 2011 Newcomer of the Year in the 49 AAAA league along with earning First-Team All-District honors and Academic All-District honors the same season. As part of the 50 AAAA league, Hemker was named First-Team All-District in 2012 and 2013.
Grout, a 2013 5A State Champion, comes to San Marcos after playing high school soccer at Plano West High School as a center midfielder. In 2013, her state champion team finished the season with a 26-0-2 overall record. Zapalac comes to Texas State after attending Clear Falls High School out of League City, Texas. Zapalac was a First-Team All-
State selection her junior season along with earning First-Team All-District honors for the 24-5A district that same season.
Rockwall, Texas native Warnick joins the Texas State squad after being named First-Team All-District her sophomore season and Second-Team All-District her freshman season.
Nordstrom joins Texas State after playing at Lake Howell High School in Orlando, Fla. She is a four-year starting varsity goalkeeper where she has been her team captain during her junior and senior seasons. During her time at Lake Howell, Nordstrom led the conference in save percentage and total saves while being named First-Team All-Conference.
Havenhill joins Coach Conner’s Bobcats as a defender where she started in 49 out of 55 matches. After her freshman season, she was named the TAPPS 5A Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-District. Also her freshman season, her team finished runner-up at the state championships.
To round out the 2014 class, Hormuth comes to Texas State as a forward out of Cedar Park, Texas. While at Cedar Park, Hormuth has helped lead her team to back-to-back 20-win seasons along with earning First-Team All-District honors all three seasons.
2014 SCHEDULEThis year’s schedule features 12 home contests including an exhibition against Houston Baptist to open the season and nine Sun Belt Conference matches. The non-conference schedule features match-ups from various different conferences including the Big 12, C-USA, WAC, and Southland. Featured home non-conference games for the Bobcats come on Sept. 12 and Sept. 21 when the Bobcats welcome Big 12 opponents TCU and Texas to the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Bobcats have competed against the Horned Frogs five times in program history, with TCU owning a 3-2 edge over Texas State. This will mark the second regular season match-up with the Longhorns in program history as the Bobcats traveled north to Austin to take on Texas last season. A couple not quite so familiar opponents for the Bobcats on the 2014 non-conference schedule include WAC member New Mexico State, SWAC opponent Texas Southern, and Southland member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In the 15-year history of Texas State women’s soccer, the Bobcats have only faced off against the Aggies once (2012), the Tigers twice (2004, 2012), and this will be the first all-time meeting against the Islanders as they are in just their second season of action.
Familiar schools, however, on the non-conference schedule include former Southland Conference foes in Lamar and Northwestern State, UTEP, Prairie View A&M, and I-35 rival in UTSA.

In 1999, head coach Kat Conner was given the opportunity to build a women’s soccer
program at Texas State. She has not only built a program, but created a legacy. In her 15 seasons as the leader of the Bobcats, she has won a combined four championships, five conference tournaments, and she also has taken Texas State to the NCAA Tournament five times.
Last season, Conner guided the Bobcats in their third conference in as many seasons, finishing with a 4-3-1 conference record and a Semi-Final finish in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Sophomore Lynsey Curry, a forward from Cypress, Texas who earned Freshman of the Year honors in the WAC the previous season, earned Second-Team All-Conference honors. Tori Hale also was named Second-Team All-SBC. In just her second season with the Bobcats in 2013, Hale also tied the single season record in assists with nine.
Conner’s latest appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 2011 after the Bobcats defeated Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Conference Tournament, 1-0. Heading into the
game, SFA was the leading goal scoring team in the country with over 3.4 goals per game.
Texas State finished that season 14-6-1, just one of 20 teams in the country to win at least 12 games. From 2008-11, the Bobcats won a combined 53 games, 30th most in the NCAA.
Individually, Texas State finished the 2011 season with a league-high six All-Southland Conference selections along with Newcomer of the Year, Andrea Mauk.
During her tenure, Conner coached three Southland Conference Players of the Year, four Newcomers of the Year, three Freshman of the Year, one All-American and 65 All-Conference team members.
In Texas State’s inaugural season, Conner led Texas State to a 9-9-3 overall record and a 6-3-3 mark in the Southland
Conference to finish third overall and advance to the league’s postseason tournament. Despite the inexperience, Texas State claimed its first-ever SLC Tournament title and played in the NCAA Tournament play-in game.
Two years later, the Bobcats returned to the NCAA Tournament after posting a 14-7-0 overall record and
claiming the SLC title and sweeping through the SLC tournament. It was just the second time in
league history a team had won both the conference and conference tournament
championships.
Conner continued her winning ways in 2002 when Texas State
shared the SLC championship with Southeastern Louisiana, and again
in 2004 when the Bobcats won the SLC Tournament and made its third appearance in the NCAA
Tournament.
Texas State turned in the best season of Texas State’s soccer in history in 2008.
The Bobcats posted a 13-4-4 overall record and went undefeated against SLC opponents with a 7-0-2 mark to claim the SLC championship. Duplicating the feat previously achieved in 2001, Texas State alsowon
the Southland Tournament and advanced to the NCAA’s.
Texas State met Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA postseason for the third time in
program history. The Aggies held a 2-0 lead by halftime, but the Bobcats scored their first-ever goal against Texas A&M to forge a comeback, however, A&M claimed the win, 5-2.
Despite losing four members from the spectacular squad, the 2009 season seemed to fall right into place. The Bobcats enjoyed another undefeated conference season, going 8-0-1 and with a 14-6-1 overall mark.
Conner was named Southland Coach of the Year and junior Britney Curry was named the 2009 Player of the Year. Curry ranked seventh nationally averaging .842 goals per game and eighth with an average of two points per game. The honor marked the third-straight season Curry was named to a postseason team, a feat a number of athletes have enjoyed under Conner’s leadership. Conner has coached quite a few

stars during her time in San Marcos as Curry finished her career as Texas State’s all-time career scoring leader with 123 points (53 goals, 17 assists). In 2010, she was the leading scorer in the conference, with 33 points (14 goals, five assists). Nationally, she ranked 13th in both total goals (14) and goals per game (0.667) and 18th in points per game with 1.57. For her career, she finished just four points shy of the all-time Southland Conference record of 127 points by Kim McNally (Southeastern Louisiana, 2002-04).
Marva Bailey (1999-2002) earned First-Team All-SLC honors each year of her career at Texas State and Kendra Kade repeated the achievement from 2001-2004. In 2002, Sarah Buchrucker became Texas State’s first soccer All-American after being named to the Verizon Wireless All-American Team. In 2004, Danielle Holloway became the SLC’s first player in history to be named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season.
In addition to the success on the field, Conner prides herself on student-athletes performing well in the classroom. Along with a championship caliber program on the field, she demands the same for her player’s education.
In the spring of 2014, three members of Conner’s squad were recognized with the Cream of the Crop award, given to student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Along with the Cream of the Crop award winners, 12 additional members from the 2013 roster were awarded the Oak Farms Dairy Academic Achievement Award.
During the 2004-05 school year, the Bobcat soccer team earned the Emmett Shelton Award, an honor given to the Texas State’s highest female team GPA. Jayne Sherman, a two-time All-SLC Academic winner, was also named the SLC Student-Athlete of the Year in 2005.
Prior to taking the reins at Texas State, Conner was an assistant at Texas A&M under Aggie head coach G. Guerrieri. Conner was responsible for recruiting and coaching all phases of the game, scheduling, travel, budget, summer camps, as well as monitoring academics for the team.
During her five seasons at A&M, the Aggies made four NCAA tournament appearances, won one Big 12 regular season title and one Big 12 Tournament championship.
Conner began her coaching career at Pacific Lutheran University after completing a successful playing career for the Lutes in 1990, where she earned a B.A. in physical education. Conner served as the Lutes’ defensive coordinator, handling recruiting and travel. As a coach, Conner held lead the team to a national championship in 1991 and a national runner-up finish in 1992. The Lutes combined record over Conner’s stay as a player and a coach was 57-8-7, and made the NAIA Championship game all three years.
The 1991 championship team has been inducted into the Pacific Lutheran Hall of Fame. It marked the last time the Lutes have won the NAIA National Championship.
Prior to finishing her playing days at Pacific Lutheran, Conner played three years at Hardin Simmons. While there, she led her team to the NAIA Championship game in 1988. She also was named to the NAIA All-Tournament team in 1988.
As well as coaching at Texas State, Conner has been involved with developing Texas youth soccer. She has been a member of the coaching staff for the Region III Olympic Development Program and served as the coach for the South Texas U16 team.
Collegiately, Conner was a member of the 2011 NCAA Central Ranking Committee during the season. She was the chairman of the NSCAA Central Ranking Committee in 2011 after serving on it since 2009.
From 2004-07, Conner was appointed to the NCAA soccer rules committee by both the Southland Conference and the NCAA. Conner holds a USSF “A” license as well as a U.S. Soccer
Goalkeeping license and NSCAA Premier license.
Conner is a native of Irving, Texas where she graduated from Nimitz High School.

NEWS AROUND THE LEAGUEUALR is off to the best start in program history with its five consecutive wins to start a season. Before this year, the team had only ever won four games at the beginning of a season. UALR is one of just 22 teams remaining in the country who have not lost or tied a game. Only 15 of those teams have a 5-0-0 record or better.
Appalachian State head coach Sarah Strickland will coach against her alma mater for the first time as a head coach on Sunday against George Mason. She coached against them once as an assistant at Mississippi State.
After dropping their first two matches of the season the Troy Trojans have rattled off four consecutive shutout victorities behind the strong play of Alissa Jones and Mikki Lewis. Jones has five goals scored in six matches played with three of those goals being game winners.
