This new year has certainly arrived with a vengeance! I trust everyone is staying warm and busy indoors…painting. Hopefully the winter wonderland we’ve been dealt has given some of you renewed inspiration. You have to admit that the blanket of snow is beautiful in spite of its inconvenience. The board has been busy re-investigating some areas we have looked at in the past…mainly the idea of digital entries for the Open Juried Exhibition in the fall. It is one of the subjects that comes up at most board meetings, and ends with the notion that we will look into it further. Jinnie, ever diligent has been doing just that. She has spent a great deal of time and energy exploring how to make the Open Juried Exhibition more effi- cient, with the idea of having the entries juried by digital images. Because this is such a big step, we have decided to ask the membership for their input in this process, so look for an upcoming survey that asks your opinion. Please send your response back, so your voice can be heard. If we are going to have this succeed, t is important that the membership is onboard with this process. Stay tuned for more on this. We know that transitions can be difficult, but the goal is to keep the membership up to date with the times. With sup- port and guidance, we are confident we can make the tran- sition into digital submission relatively painless for our members. Having just celebrated our 75 th Anniversary, we are looking to move gracefully into the future, and look for- ward to another 75 successful years. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year! CHARLES DEMUTH (1883 – 1935)-- American Modernist Painter by Art Klein

When searching for watercolor artists to inspire us, we certainly must includeCharles Demuth. Though plagued by illness all his life, he produced over a thou-sand works of art, including the well-known “My Egypt” which was inspired bygrain elevators in his hometown, Lancaster, PA. He did many pencil drawings, oil paintings and watercolors of anything and everything; landscapes, cityscapes, flowers, industrial buildings, acrobats, dancers, circus performers, people in allsorts of scenes, and scenes showing the changing of the seasons. His still-lifesare exquisite; unsurpassed in composition and use of color, shading, and whitespace. Duncan Phillips described Demuth as “A virtuoso with watercolor of themost delicious clarity and the subtlest nuance of pearly tones….” In his book onDemuth, Alvord Eiseman said “Demuth’s versatility as an artist, his ability to de-velop his own unique style and leave behind Fauvism, Synchronism, Futurism, and the other new waves of the pre-war years, are unexcelled. It is as easy toidentify a Demuth painting as it is to distinguish an O’Keefe, a Martin, or a Dove, but there is a far greater variety and sense of experimentation in the Lancastri-an.” In his “Bowl of Oranges,” 1925, the intense color contrast of the blue rococobackground with the brilliant oranges achieves and emulates the painting stylethat Demuth ascribed to Georgia O’Keefe. (from Eiseman’s “Charles Demuth”)

Demuth was born in Lancaster, PA and lived most of his life there. Most ofhis finished paintings were done in his small 2nd floor studio in his Lancasterhome, overlooking the garden. His mother’s garden was the inspiration for manyof his paintings. It is surprising that he was able to travel as much as he did as ayoung man, because his health was very fragile. At the age of four, he suffered ahip injury, probably caused by a fall from his father’s arms, which rendered himpermanently lame. As an adult, he suffered from severe diabetes. And yet, as a young man, he travelled to Paris anumber of times where he was part of the avante garde scene. From 1900-10 Charles studied at the Drexel Instituteof Art in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where his instructors included Thomas Anschutzand William Merritt Chase, who had been students of Thomas Eakins. His first major exhibit was at the Pennsylva-nia Academy’s annual watercolor show in 1912. In 1913, he took his 3rd and most important trip to Europe, andjoined the Academie Moderne in Paris. When he returned from this trip, he realized that his favorite medium waswatercolor. Demuth around this time inherited his father’s estate, which made him financially independent for therest of his life and gave him the freedom to devote himself fully to painting.

He visited Bermuda in 1916-17 with Marsden Hartley, Albert Gleizes, and Louis Bouche and became stronglyinfluenced by Cubism. In 1919-21 he made his last trip to Europe. Due to health problems he was hospitalized brief-ly in France and returned to America, convalescing in Morristown New Jersey at Dr Allen’s Sanatorium. Over thenext few years, Demuth won many prizes for his watercolor paintings. His work was included in Stieglitz’s IntimateGallery when it opened in NYC in 1925. Stieglitz’s select group of American artists included Georgia O’Keefe, Ar-thur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Demuth, and photographer Paul Strand. In the late 1920s, Demuth creat-ed his well-known poster-portraits, to honor his friends O’Keefe, Arthur Dove, Charles Duncan, Marsden Hartley,John Marin, and writers Gertrude Stein, Eugene O’Neill, and Wallace Stevens. His work was included in a show atMOMA (American Painting& Sculpture 1862-1932) in 1932, and also a show at the Whitney in 1933. In 1934, hiswork was included in the “19th International Biennial Art Exhibition” at Venice, Italy and in “Five Americans” at theSmith College Museum of Art.

Demuth was in a very fragile state of health for the last 5 years of his life, and for much of that time, his mothertook care of him at his Lancaster home. He was only 52 whenhe died, but he was already acclaimed for his cubist-derivedpaintings of American cityscapes as well as his sensuous, richlycolored watercolors of still-lifes and figure groups (from Eiseman).

For anyone interested in watercolor painting, his work is timeless and offerstremendous inspiration. You can check out “CHARLES DEMUTH” by AlvordL. Eiseman, Watson-Guptill Publications, NYC, 1982. It is filled with excellentreproductions of his work, as well as a definitive biography of the artist. Aneven better way to appreciate the virtuosity of Demuth would be to visit hisstudio and home, now a museum: 120 E. King St, Lancaster, PA. Hours: Tuesday,10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (see the museum website).
