Paua comes to Maiden

First conducted in 2002, the Sportingbet Magic Maiden series has each year unearthed a multitude of brilliant youngsters and its

contestants have gone on to profoundly affect subsequent Group racing features.

Annually the heats attract aspirants from across the eastern seaboard, with the 2014 series featuring Shakey Jakey’s 520m, 29.07 track record back in the

Prominent Wentworth Park trainers, Jason Mackay and Steve White will head in to Saturday’s (april 19) Group 3 Sportingbet Magic Maiden final, with two qualifiers each, with all starters having strong claims in taking out the $25,000 winners cheque.

After leading throughout most of Friday’s 520m semi-final journey Paua To Roar was pipped on the post by Glenn Rounds prepared Anything Less in the opening qualifier. Stopping the clock at 29.94, the duel was an impressive opening event to Friday’s program with Paua to Roar, for nowra hill based Steve White, drawing box one in next weekend’s final.

White’s second qualifier for the Group 3 title came in the final run-off when Tommy Brislane lead all the way in 29.97, over five lengths clear of Zipping Weston. A thrilled White was pleased to again be a part of the Golden Easter Egg Carnival, having previously placed in the association Cup and enjoyed success in the Golden Easter Egg.

Hooksy sails into Sensation

First conducted in 2013, the Macro Meats New Sensation series was developed to be a stepping stone event, for up and coming

greyhounds. Runners must have been 27 months of age at nomination close with no more than 10 wins or 20 race starts.

For the past two years this new series has attractedhigh levels of attention from participants,

patrons and the media

Victorian prepared Hooksy sailed into the $25,000 to the winner, Macro Meats New Sensation final, claiming his semi-final victory in 29.57 at Wentworth Park on Friday night (April 11).

having just his 15th career start, the son of hondo Black x uno Witch, led all the way to beat home King Odessa by over 12 lengths, recording best of the night figures.

Pleased with the improvement shown from hooksy in his third appearance on the Glebe circuit, co-trainer, Jimmy auld said following the event that his runner had gone on with it better than expected, and will give a big show in the final.

Other semi-final winners included Bottom Dollar (30.27) in the opening qualifier, while in the second semi-final Irondale Bravo (29.66), defeated Lacey Lois and heavily supported kennel mate to the winner, Silent Effective.

Expected to be well supported in the final, third semi winner My Kinda Music (29.75) has drawn awkwardly in box six for Saturday’s final, but has been in good form to cope with the draw. Drawing box three for the third straight week, hooksy will again start a hot favourite.

AAA Radiator Specialists Association Cup

First conducted in 1965 at Harold Park on a grass circuit over 732m. Wentworth Park’s first Association Cup over 720m was held

in 1988 and thirty years on the event remains the Association’s wealthiest and most important staying event.

The greatest acid test, the Association Cup’s past winners list emphasises this attachment to greatness with victors including immortals Zoom Top and Bold Trease, along with the

incredible 2012 winner Miata.

For the third straight start, Xylia allen, has shattered a track record, eclipsing Dyna Willow’s standard set just a fortnight ago over the 720m journey at Wentworth Park on Saturday night (april 12). Starting in box one in the opening aaa Radiator Specialists association Cup heat, Xylia allen came into the Group 1 series having set new time standards at horsham (570m -31.93) and Geelong (680m - 38.91).

The daughter of Turanza Bale was quickly away setting a first section record of 15.84, quicker than any 280m starter has set at the venue. Leading all the way Xylia allen stunned race goers when she eventually stopped the clock at 41.53, taking 0.21 of a second off Dyna Willow’s mark set just two weeks earlier.

Speaking immediately after the race, handler trevor Smith, said she was certainly carving her tale in history.

“She is something truly special, to go three track records now, and that quick here, I can hardly believe it,” Smith said.

Speaking to Sky Racing Radio, owner and breeder, Paul Wheeler, said he believed that Xylia allen was capable of going quicker still.

“What she did on Saturday was unbelievable... (and) I would not be surprised if she could break the track record again (this Saturday),” Wheeler said.

a product of Wheeler’s own sire and dam breeding, Xylia allen will be seeking her second Group 1 victory at Wentworth Park, after claiming the 520 Peter Mosman last June.

Xylia Allen has drawn box two in the final, while fellow heat winners, Dyna Willow and Hailstorm Billy have drawn boxes four and six respectively.

handler of former, record holder Dyna Willow, tammy Collins said after the event, it was a shame to see the record fall so quickly, but believes that Dyna Willow will be better for heat hit out.

“Really she has done a great job to break her previous record, but there is improvement in there,” Collins said.

The Ambrosoli

Formerly known as the Golden Easter Egg Consolation, the event was renamed in 2009 to the ambrosoli in recognition of the contribution legendary race caller and aGRa hall of Fame

member Paul ambrosoli has made to the greyhound industry and in particular Wentworth Park.

With qualifiers for the Ambrosoli finishing third or fourth in last Saturday’s Golden Easter Egg semi-finals, the story is often of what might have been.

None more so that Anthony Azzopardi’s Hurricane Rino which finished third in the fourth semi-final last Saturday.

“he gave plenty of cheek,” azzopardi lamented after the race.

“he is a dog that gets out and goes, and you just have to hope that he can hold on. I am very happy with the box eight draw, and now just need him to kick on that bit more this week,” azzopardi added.

For Victorian mentor, Darren McDonald, last Saturday’s semi results left the master trainer without a finalist in the Egg, which saw the hope of 2014 being the year he would claim his third event title come to an end. McDonald however, has had Where’s The Surf and Dark Warrior qualified for the consolation event, The Ambrosoli. With Where’s The Surf drawing box one in the $25,000 to the winner event, this strong field will mean that despite wearing the red rug, Where’s The Surf will need to be at his very best to win.

Expect plenty out of multiple Group winner, Dyna nalin also. Drawn well in box three, trainer Paul Stuart expects bigs things from this experienced campaigner.
