Welcome to Roller Derby!

www.foxyrol lers.com

The Redcliff Roller Derby Association formed in the Spring of 2012 when a group of like minded women and men from Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Brooks banded together with the determination and commitment to play roller derby for fun and exercise with a strong focus on TEAMWORK.

Our premiere team, the Foxy Rollers, has an open door policy and new members are always welcome! We ask that you please bring a mouth guard and a $5 drop in fee, and be sure to let us know when you’re coming so we can line you up with some skates to try! With practices and home games scheduled in both Medicine Hat, we’re building and growing each week!

As a non profit, skater owned and operated organization, we work hard to keep our league in the green. Due to monthly operating costs (practice space rent, advertising and recruiting costs, and event expenses) we are always looking for fundraising ideas to keep our Foxy Rollers Team on the track. We also believe in supporting the communities in which we live in, so if you have an event that could use a little help, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

Roller Derby: An OverviewEach team fields up to five skaters per two-minute playing segment, called a “jam.” Blockers play both offensive and defensive roles in a defined “pack” on the oval track. Jammers score points for their team by lapping opposing players. Skaters may be penalized for committing foul. Teams skate short while they have one or more players serving a penalty. A team’s full lineup for a jam consists of one Pivot, three Blockers and one Jammer:

b

Pivot - The pivot blocker wears a helmet cover (or panty) with a stripe on it. She generally serves as the leader of her teammates playing in that jam. The pivot is the only blocker who can switch into the jammer position during a jam, through the star pass maneuver.

Blocker - The other three blockers do not wear helmet covers. Blockers may play offense and defense at any given time and frequently switch between offensive and defensive tasks. The rules do not differentiate the remaining three blocking positions from one another; however, teams may differentiate between the positions for strategic purposes.

Jammer - The jammer wears a helmet cover (or panty) with a star on it. She lines up at the second starting line and begins play at the second start whistle. The jammer’s goal is to pass opposing blockers and emerge from the pack as quickly as possible. If she is the first of the two jammers to escape the pack without committing any penalties, she gains the strategic advantage of being able to stop the jam at any time by placing her hands on her hips. Once a jammer laps the pack, she begins scoring one point for every opposing blocker she passes legally. She can continue to lap the pack for additional scoring passes for the duration of the jam.

Bout - A bout is a full game made up of two 20 - 30 minute periods.

Jam - Each period of the bout is broken into jams of 2 minutes or less.

Penalties - Skaters can incur penalties of 1 minute per each major infraction. A skater that ends up in the penalty box 7 times during a bout will be expelled from the game!

First, both teams line up. The jammers start behind the jammer line, and the blockers start in front of the jammer line.

When the whistle blows, everyone starts skating in a counter-clockwise direction. The jammers try to fight their way through the pack of blockers. The first jammer through the pack becomes “Lead Jammer” and gets the ability to call off the jam.

A jammer can score points upon her second pass of the pack. She will get one point per opposing skater passed - this includes skaters who are in the penalty box. The jam lasts for 2 minutes or until it is called off by the Lead Jammer, whichever comes first.

These are the people that volunteer their time to make our events happen. They are the people without skates you see on the track - the penalty trackers, the jam timer, the penalty box timers, the scoreboard operators, the announcer, and many more.

Non-Skating OFficials

It takes A LOT of volunteers to pull off our events. So why not sign up to be an NSO (Non Skating Official). We’ll teach you everything you need to know, you’ll get to be an internal part of a great organization full of appreciative (and wildly entertaining) people. You don’t have to be a skater to be a derby junkie!
