CertainTeed Gypsum operates its manufacturing facilities with a responsible
and environmentally conscious ethic that includes reclamation, preservation
of natural resources, recycling and waste management.
All face and back paper used on our gypsum board products is made
from 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and multiple CertainTeed
Gypsum plants use synthetic gypsum for the primary raw material. When
combined with the recycled paper, this yields a total recycled content of up
to 99% for ProRoc® gypsum board. Some of our plants have implemented
construction waste management programs that incorporate post-consumer
gypsum board back into the production process.
Gypsum board product innovation is also carried out with a focus on
environmental responsibility; research and development emphasize
minimizing environmental impacts to the greatest extent possible.
Understanding the role of CertainTeed Gypsum in meetingGreen Building Standards
> Our gypsum board, paperless glass-mat board, fi nishing compound and joint tape manufacturing locations can provide regional materials coverage throughout North America.
> M2Tech® Moisture and Mold Resistant Gypsum Board products are specially formulated for applications where enhanced moisture and mold resistance is preferred. Products are GREENGUARD® Children & Schools Certifi ed.
> GlasRoc® Sheathing, Shaftliner and Tile Backer are paperless, moisture and mold resistant products.
> Gypsum board and fi nishing products manufactured at CertainTeed Gypsum plants certifi ed to ISO 14001 have been Green Approved by the NAHB Research Center.
> CertainTeed Gypsum is committed to resource conservation:
– The face and back paper used for our gypsum board consists of 100% recycled paper.
– Synthetic gypsum, specifi cally fl ue-gas desulfurized gypsum, is used at plants where sources are available. Using synthetic gypsum to make board enables benefi cial use of a material that would otherwise be landfi lled.
– The total recycled content is 99% for CertainTeed Gypsum wallboard products using synthetic gypsum.

There is a rapidly growing awareness of the importance of
indoor air quality and its impact on health and productivity.
Research indicates that people spend approximately 90
percent of their time indoors.
Factors affecting indoor air quality
The indoor environment is affected by many factors,
including local climate, HVAC systems, building materials,
occupants, and potential contaminant sources such
as furnishings, moisture, and outdoor pollutants.
Why it’s important to improve indoor air quality
Improves indoor air quality and provides peace of mind with innovative technologies* from CertainTeed. It cleans the air by permanently removing VOCs** circulating indoors and has superior M2Tech® technology, providing enhanced moisture and mold resistance.
Where are the pollutants coming from?
Volatile Organic Compounds
Microbial matter
Mold and mildew due to wet and damp materials
Carbon monoxide
Automobile exhaust from nearby garages, loading docks, roadways
Tobacco smoke
Carbon dioxide
Combustion of fossil fuels from heating equipment or generators

How mold affects air quality
Mold is also a serious concern when it comes to indoor air
quality. The potential health effects associated with mold
exposures include allergic reactions and other respiratory
concerns. Specifying specially-engineered moisture and
mold resistant building materials, such as AirRenew™ and
ProRoc® with M2Tech® products, greatly reduces the
potential for mold problems.

People
Particulates
Smoke, paper, water residue, carpet fi bers, dust and other allergens
Temperature and humidity extremes

How mold affects air quality
Mold is also a serious concern when it comes to indoor air
quality. The potential health effects associated with mold
exposures include allergic reactions and other respiratory
concerns. Specifying specially-engineered moisture and
mold resistant building materials, such as AirRenew™ and
ProRoc® with M2Tech® products, greatly reduces the
potential for mold problems.
