ANNUAL REPORT201 -201October 1, 201 - September 30, 201

LETTER FROM THE CEODear Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada Friends and Family:

“I have something for every girl,” were the words Juliette Gordon Low shared with a friend over the telephone on March 12, 1912.

Since then our great Girl Scout movement has grown and changed and still does the important work of helping girls realize their full potential. Juliette’s vision of preparing girls for the future and developing today’s girls into tomor-row’s leaders is alive and well as we celebrate our 105 year history in 2017.

As we think back to all she began and the girls lives who have been touched by Girl Scouting, it is a great opportunity to reflect not only on our own girls but all the trailblazers amongst our 60 million alumnae who have been and continue to be our Girl Scout sisters.

In this time of reflection, it is also fun to look out over the faces of our Girl Scouts today and dream of their possibilities. Thank you for all you do as troop leaders, parents and volunteers to raise the next generation of great women.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Liz Ortenburger Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada

“For Science, I made goo and used engineering to fly drones”- Camp FoxtailCamper

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) When today’s girls graduate from college, the U.S. will need three million more scientists and engineers*. Girl Scouts is fueling this pipeline with programs that introduce girls to the wide range of STEM-based careers. From flying a drone at Camp Foxtail to launching a water-filled rocket at a Super Troop meeting, girls learn first-hand the excitement and innovation that comes with a growing field.

FOCUS AREAS

Healthy Living Girl Scouting provides a safe environment where girls are able to develop their own path toward a healthy lifestyle – a key to leadership success. For girls, being healthy is not just eating right and exercising; it is also about feeling good about one’s self, being supported by family, and engaging in safe friendships. Girl Scout curriculum consists of activities and camps that build self-esteem, physical fitness, nutrition, and safety.

Environmental Leadership & Responsibility Girl Scout programs combine environmental education with community action, and give each girl a fun and meaningful way to protect and conserve the resources we all enjoy. Through outdoor experiences, like summer

camp and community action projects, girls work toward earning badges on

care, conservation, and environmental responsibility.

Financial LiteracyFinancial Literacy helps girls set fiscal goals and gain the confidence they need to ultimately take control of their

own future. By developing money management skills early in life, girls learn how to become responsible consumers, create

a budget, build and manage credit, and save and invest for whatever’s next. Through our CEO-in-Training curriculum, Girl Scout Cookie Program, and the Girl Bo$$ initiative made possible by a generous grant from Toyota Financial Services, Girl Scouts offers future female leaders the opportunity to build their business savvy and hone their financial literacy expertise.

Community ServiceGirl Scouts are proud to be do- gooders. It’s not only fun to give back with friends, it’s making a huge difference in our neighborhoods, communities, and the world. Troop 41 worked with The Protectors of Tule Springs towards the “Mammoth Penny Push” fundraising and education campaign for Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. In October 2016, Troop 41 was honored with the National Park Service Partnership Award.

“Girl Scouts has taught my daughter so many things that will help her be whatever she

wants to be.” - Michael

Camp FoxtailSummer 2016 was a record-breaking year at Camp Foxtail! Over 600 girls attended overnight camp and experienced the beauty of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Girls flew drones as part of the STEM Lab, tested their balance and teamwork on the ropes course, and practiced focus and concentration at the archery range. Most importantly, girls developed the grit and independence they’ll carry with them long after their days spent among the towering Ponderosa

Pines.Travel

Travel is an integral part of every Girl Scout’s journey. Travel introduces girls to new things, different cultures,

encourages self expression and adaptability. In 2016, Isabella, a Daisy from Troop 102, traveled to Ireland and met with a troop of Irish Girl Guides. The Girl Guides introduced Isabella and her mom Kristin to the games and badges unique to Ireland. Also in 2016, Troop 355 visited Savannah, Georgia

where they visited many of the Juliette Gordon Low historical sites and bridged from Cadettes to Seniors

on the porch of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.

Man Enoughto be a Girl ScoutWhen Juliette Gordon Low led her first Girl Scout meeting in 1912, men had little influence over the upbringing and development of their children. 104 years later, societal expectations, modern demands, and parenting trends have drastically changed. Today, men are more involved in their girls lives than ever before. In our council, father figures play important roles as troop leaders, cookie managers, and volunteers.

“Being a Girl Scout troop leader has given me the opportunity to guide my daughters as they grow and has helped me be the dad I’ve always wanted to be.” - Bill

Cookie ShareThanks to rock star Girl Scouts, cookies were donated to to organizations across Southern Nevada including Three Square Food Bank, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, and Blue Star Mothers, among others. In August 2016, Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada delivered over 2,400 boxes of cookies to police officers at all nine Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (Metro) command centers and Metro headquarters.

CEO in TrainingThe Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada are preparing the next generation of female leaders through character development, life skills, and real world experience. The CEO in Training program partners Cadettes (grades 6-8) through Ambassador (grades 11-12) Girl Scouts with local businesses to introduce them to a a vast array of industries throughout Southern Nevada. The CEOs in Training make presentations and learn from industry leaders about marketing, sales,

and business ethics. In 2016, CEOs in Training presented in front of the leadership teams

at the Las Vegas Urban Chamber of Commerce, KLAS-TV Channel 8, and

UNLV, among others.

“If I could tell my troop leader one thing, it would be thank you for empowering me to accept myself as an individual.” - Quinn

The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scouts earn, it stands for excellence and leadership for girls everywhere.

The Gold Award project challenges girls to identify an unmet need or core issue in the community, research and investigate it, and to put in place strategies to make the project measurable and sustainable.

Congratulations to our 2016 Girl Scout Gold Recipients!

INVEST IN GIRLSChange the world.

A Girl Scout shines, reflecting the confidence her troop has ignited within her. A Girl Scout sees herself in the stars. A Girl Scout raises her hand to lead

the experiment. At Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, we proudly

encourage girls to do anything they set their sights on. And

we can’t wait to see how today’s girls wil change our world

tomorrow.
