Campus Safety Public Safety:
The Department of Public Safety is established to protect and serve the educational
environment of Canisius College, keeping the environment free from the threat of
physical harm, property damage and disruptive activity. We are continuously striving
to build and maintain a high level of cooperation between the entire campus commu-
nity and the Department, attempting to keep a high level of cooperation between the
Department and the community surrounding the campus, maintaining positive com-
munication between the Department and other law enforcement agencies, and provid-
ing regulatory and other miscellaneous services to assist in the attainment of the goals
of the College.
The primary services of the Department include the enforcement of Federal, State and
Local statutes and Canisius College ordinances, and crime prevention and con-
trol. We also provide emergency services for the injured and ill, traffic and parking
supervision, and provide fire prevention and safety services.
REPORTING INCIDENTS:
Public Safety strongly recommends that all crimes and emergency situations which
occur on campus or in the campus area be immediately reported. To report an inci-
dent:
- Call from an off-campus telephone call (716) 888-2330, or
- Visit the Public Safety Office in the lower level of Bosch Residence Hall.
- Identify yourself as a Canisius/Buffalo State Resident
Dispatchers are on duty 24 hours a day to take your call and dispatch Public Safety officers to investigate.

Timely Notifications:
When circumstances require immediate notification throughout the campus community,
written and electronic special alerts, which outline the incident, are prepared and
distributed.
Canisius Alert System:
The Canisius Alert system is an emergency notification system that enables college
officials to quickly notify the campus community in the event of a significant emergency.
The notices can be automatically sent to your cellular phone.
Canisius Emergency Warning System:
The Canisius emergency warning system is a public address system that can be activated
to make real time emergency voice announcements in the event of a developing emer-
gency situation on campus or in the general area.
Canisius College Crime Statistics:
http://www.canisius.edu/dotAsset/2f0e58c7-f43d-4578-b6e3-9eef1982eee9.pdf
Blue Light System:
Several exterior Blue Light Emergency Phones are located throughout the campus. These
phones are easily identified by a blue light mounted directly above them. They can be
used to report actual or suspected criminal incidents, fires and/or medical emergencies to
Public Safety. They may also be used to request a shuttle van.
To operate the phone, briefly depress and release the red button on the panel. The phone
will automatically dial the Public Safety dispatcher. When the dispatcher answers, talk in
your normal tone of voice to relay your message. If for some reason you don't respond
verbally, a uniformed officer will respond to the phone location to investigate. Calls will
automatically disconnect in 3 minutes.

Campus fire safety systems are routinely inspected and tested. Results are
documented and deficiencies are addressed promptly.
Fire safety inspections are conducted by a NYS Fire Inspector, Facilities
Management, and Student Life staff. Student Life staff will request the
correction of any safety violations. A resident’s failure to remove
dangerous or prohibited items when requested to do so by Student Life
may lead to confiscation of the item or removal from housing.
RESTRICTED STUDENT HOUSING APPLIANCES & ITEMS

• Rotisseries • Satellite dishes • Hot plates
• Halogen lamps • Stoves • Woks
• Frying appliance • Immersion coils • Open flame devices
• Deep-fat fryers • Any exposed burner
CHRISTMAS TREES/FLAMMABLE DECORATIONS
Real Christmas trees are not allowed in the residence halls. Only potted
trees or plants are allowed in student rooms. During the Christmas season
and throughout the year, only fire resistant decorations are allowed.
Flammable decorations are not permitted in the residence halls. In addition,
decorative electric lights of any kind are not permitted in residence halls

14
All fire alarms should be considered fire alerts and the building of occurrence,
regardless of its type, must be evacuated immediately. It is the policy of Canisius
College that any known or suspected fire or activated fire alarm must be immediately
reported to Public Safety. This can be done by either activating a fire alarm pull
station in the area, using telephone by dialing 911 or call 888-2330 from a cellular
telephone. In case of fire, you should activate the alarm in your area and evacuate the
building immediately. If you are in a residence facility, if practical, knock on room
doors along your evacuation route to notify residents of the fire evacuation. Do not
attempt to extinguish the fire. Whether it’s an actual fire or a false alarm, the building
must be evacuated immediately.
The following procedures should be followed:
• Wear or carry clothing suitable for the weather.
• Close and lock your room or office door.
• Do not stop to gather valuables.
• Leave the building via the stairway. (DO NOT USE ELEVATORS).
• Do so in an orderly and expedient manner.
• Do not obstruct passageways for firefighters or other emergency responders.
Remain outside and at least fifty (50) feet away from the building until the signal to
return is given or you are directed to another building or area. Anyone remaining in
the building during an evacuation is subject to disciplinary action. Based on
guidelines established by the NYS Office of Fire Prevention, Public Safety will notify
the Buffalo Fire Department in the event of an activated fire alarm or reported fire or
suspected fire. All resident students must immediately evacuate their residence
facility upon activation of a fire alarm by following the aforementioned procedures.
Failure to do so will result in disciplinary sanctions, not limited to but could include
removal from the residence halls, residence/college probation, and completion of fire
education workshop. Upon an emergency evacuation of a residence hall, students
must never reenter the building without the direction of the Public Safety shift
supervisor. Do not under any circumstance reenter the building based on rumor or
silenced alarm. Wait for the direction of personnel in charge. Again, direction about
reentering a residence hall will come from the shift supervisor from the Public Safety
Department, or the Buffalo Fire Department. Keep in mind that if the Buffalo Fire
Department has been summoned to the scene of an activated fire alarm or suspected
fire, they are the highest-ranking officials in control of the situation.
