Our Identity
Winnetka Presbyterian Church is inspired by Jesus Christ to
welcome all with open hearts,
grow in faith centered on God’s Word, and
share God’s love with the world.
Our Vision
Guided by God’s Word revealed in Jesus Christ, and the gifts
given to us, Winnetka Presbyterian Church seeks encounters
with God’s living Spirit in worship and outreach, nurtures
faith development through study and group life, provides
spiritual leadership and nurture in our communities, and
serves as an instrument of justice and reconciliation in the
world.
Welcome!
Welcome to life enriched by Winnetka Presbyterian Church!
There is so much that happens here, it is hard to capture in a
program guide, but here are presented many offerings you
can consider and put in your calendars. We hope you will
take advantage of the opportunities available to worship,
learn, serve, have fun, and grow here!
Keep in mind that these are just the programmed
opportunities. Another way to worship, learn, serve, have
fun, and grow is to be here on Sunday mornings. This is the
center of our life together, and the easiest way to get
connected to the vibrant, brilliant, passionate, and engaged
people in this church, and all the activities that emerge by
living faithfully together!

2015-16 Concert Series
Saints and Sinners Around the Mighty Organ Sunday, November 1 @ 4pm Organist Matt Haider returns with another organ concert for the entire family! This year’s concert celebrates All Saints Day and Halloween, including all the spooky organ music you loved from last year. Prizes will be given out for the best costume (adults too!). Gifts of the Magi: Annual Christmas Concert Sunday, December 13 @ 4pm This year’s concert celebrates the gifts of the three kings - Balthasar, Caspar, Melchior - and the King of Kings who received their offerings. Featuring the chancel choir, instrumentalists, and guest musicians. Jazz in January: Lewis Bros. Quartet Sunday, January 24 @ 4pm Vocalist Matt Lewis and pianist Ben Lewis are thrilled to return with another concert at WPC. It will be an exciting program featuring the joyful music that has shaped their careers. Young Artist Showcase: Amber Scherer Sunday, March 13 @ 4pm Pianist Amber Scherer is an eighteen year old from Winnetka who has already established herself as one of Chicago’s most passionate young musicians. Choro de Lá pa Cá Sunday, May 1 @ 4pm This exciting group of musicians from Brazil included WPC on their US debut tour last year and they are returning to close out our series this year.
Worship is at the heart of our life together as a
community. On Sundays we gather together to praise God,
experience the living Word, celebrate the sacraments, and
be sent forth into the world as living witnesses of God’s
love. At WPC we worship in a variety of styles,
all rooted in the historic tradition of our Church.
Chancel Choir The choir leads our community in its sung prayer. Our music ranges from classical to gospel. The choir is open to all singers. Rehearsals: Thursday, 7:30-9:30pm.
Instrumentalists Instrumentalists support the singing of the choir and congregation, as well as providing preludes and offertories.
Lectors Lectors proclaim the scriptures at Sunday worship. This ministry is open to all who have a love of God’s Word and who wish to use their gift of public speaking in worship.
Greeters Greeters provide hospitality on Sunday mornings by welcoming everyone as they come through the doors. This is a great ministry for the entire family.
Ushers Ushers are the “doorkeepers in the house of God” (Psalm 84:10), handing our bulletins and making sure everything runs smoothly during worship.
Dance Ministry Our worship is enhanced throughout the year with dance. Led by Amanda Lower, dance in worship helps us express the richness of God’s Word and our praise using more than words.
Children
In religious education for infants through 5th grade, our goals
come from the promises we make at every baptism: to
support parents in raising their children in the Christian faith,
so that they may come to know, love and serve God with their
lives. Children experience the blessings of community and
grow in faith through Scripture, adult-led classes, and serving
others.
Infants Through Pre-School Infant through the pre-school classes have experienced, professionally trained caregivers and teachers. Childcare is provided every Sunday and for church-wide events. WPC uses Child Safe Practices and provides clean and nut-free rooms so that all kids can learn safely. In addition to learning at church, families receive easy-to-use, home-based lessons to nurture family faith discussions and activities.
Faith Explorers (K-5th grade) Sundays @ 9:45am Children join their families for the first part of worship each Sunday. After the Moment for the Young, they are then dismissed to their Sunday School classes. Our Workshop Rotation Program provides a variety of thematic classroom experiences. Hands-on learning includes storytelling, active games, cooking, drama, multimedia, art and computers. We depend on parent volunteers to teach and guide.
3rd Grade Sacraments Workshop Part of our 3rd Grade experience at WPC includes children and families gathering with Pastor David at the beginning of March to learn about the sacraments of baptism and holy communion.
Outreach and Service We all grow in faith by serving others, as Jesus did. We provide a number of ways that children can help and serve those in need, and learn about other people’s lives in the process. Outreach opportunities include making casseroles and Christmas cookies for A Just Harvest, placemats and handprints for the Stateville Prison Ministry, and buying food for the New Trier Food Pantry.
PUPS (Presbyterian Ushers Patrol) First Sunday of the Month 4th and 5th graders are invited to usher on the first Sunday of each month. Training is provided.
For more information on how you can get involved in the children’s programs,

Dance & Song
For five Sundays in September and October (Sept 20, 27, Oct 4, 18 & 25) Geoff Duffy and Amanda Lower, are going to offer a 30-minute (11:15-11:45am) program on Sunday mornings to help children explore music and movement in the context of worship. We will be working on a psalm that we will then include in worship on Nov. 1. Since this is a cumulative process - each week will build on the previous week - we are asking that interested families try to commit to entire six weeks. Questions? Amanda, [email protected] or Geoff, [email protected].
For more information about our youth ministry contact Rev. David Lower at [email protected]
or 847-446-7777 x20.
WPC believes supporting youth-aged kids (6th – 12th grades)
in their spiritual exploration, wrestling, and discernment is
crucial to their development, and so doing blesses and inspires
the entire community. Gathering middle and high schoolers in
a safe and fun spiritual community together offers something
important and meaningful: a loving and caring place to think
about God, wrestle with the challenge of faith, lean on voices
of wisdom, and discover purpose in the community and world.
WPC believes that young people are not only the future of the
church, they are the church now! Our youth-aged kids help
lead the whole congregation in worship, service to the
community, and having fun together. Below are the regular
opportunities to engage in youth ministry at WPC.
Senior High Bible Study
Thursdays 6-7:30pm, in the Atrium We are blessed to have a committed group of high schoolers who get together every week to eat, share, and study the Bible together with David. All senior high kids in the community are welcome to join us for this enriching time together!
Junior High Youth Group (NEW!)
1st and 3rd Sundays, 4:30-5:45pm
Starting October 3rd! WPC strives to provide meaningful experiences for middle school kids. Being part of a church during middle school is about more than just a Confirmation Class. (Though we will offer a great one next year for 7th and 8th graders.) This year, we will gather middle schoolers from 6th to 8th grade together as a youth group, meeting twice a month on Sundays to enjoy games, sharing, asking questions, and learning about the Bible together.
Senior High Summer Mission Trips Perhaps the most meaningful and powerful experience WPC offers to youth-aged kids is the opportunity to get outside our context of privilege in the North Shore, learn from people different than ourselves, and work with them to build relationships and infrastructure in their lives. In recent years, WPC youth have taken summer mission trips to Cuba, Colorado, Atlanta, Tennessee, Florida, and Ukraine. This summer the youth will head to Havana, Cuba in August, and perhaps another location in June! Stay tuned.

This course will focus on the historical, practical, and theological approaches to Christian mission and discipleship. In this course you will learn the basic contours of how the Church has engaged in mission historically, especially in the United States. Participants will also learn how to think authentically about their faith commitments and how to articulate those commitments. Mark Teasdale, D.Min., Ph.D. is the E. Stanley Jones Associate Professor of Evangelism at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary For more information and to register, please go to academychristiantheology.org.
Education
At WPC, we study with open minds and hearts, seeking greater
understanding and peace. We study the Bible, its history and
contexts, and we study our world, for what God has to say in
Jesus the Christ. We study what others in the world believe,
seeking better interfaith understanding. All this exploration is
best done in community, so we offer a variety of ways to gather
and study and grow together.
Pastor’s Bible Study Wednesdays @ 10:00am David invites you to come and dive deeply into the Bible this year. This study will be an orientation to the Bible by studying each worship text, examining its various contexts, and listening intently to what the text has to say today. Everyone, men and women, are welcome.

Book Study Making Sense of the Bible by Adam Hamilton, cost is $20. Book may also be purchased online on Amazon. Join David in reading Adam Hamilton's book, Making Sense of the Bible, by the end of September so that we can gather and make sense of the Bible. We will hold group discussions of the book, in Wednesday bible studies at 10am on 9/23 and 9/30, in youth bible study each week on Thursdays at 6pm, as well as through special group discussions on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:30pm, and Saturday, October 3 at 9am.
Covenant Bible Study We seek to form a Covenant Bible Study group to be convened on a schedule to be determined by the participants. This in-depth study of the whole Bible emphasizes the biblical concept of covenant, the unique relationship that God chooses to have with us as God’s people, as a unifying pattern through all the books in the Old and New Testaments. Biblical experts lead the study through conversational video sessions, followed by discussion among the participants. The group will meet at a time and frequency determined by the group. Watch for more information and the sign- up sheet. Contact: Kathy Fink, [email protected].

Local Outreach
WPC believes that we are called to be outward oriented,
and that often the best spiritual teachers in life are those
whom we serve. WPC provides volunteer support to many
local organizations committed to fighting poverty, hunger
and homelessness, including:
Faith, Hope & Recovery Family Promise
Good News Partners Interfaith House
A Just Harvest Community Kitchen Kairos Prison Ministry
Nurture - Family Nutrition and Wellness Samaritan Counseling Center
A Just Harvest Kitchen WPC prepares and serves the evening meal on the third Monday of each month. Help is needed to prepare the casseroles, shop for the additional meal items, deliver the food to the kitchen, plate the food and serve it to the patrons in Rogers Park. A Just Harvest serves around 170 people every meal. It is open 365 days a year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Kathy Fink, [email protected].
Family Promise This program combats homelessness for families and school-age children by providing shelter, food, hospitality, and social work help. WPC provides overnight lodging at the church, meals, and hospitality for up to four families, one week at a time, three to four weeks per year. Church volunteers set up beds, provide meals for guest families, socialize with guest parents and children, and stay overnight. This is a wonderful opportunity for an entire family to do good and meet great people! Contact, Stacy Baker, [email protected].
Faith, Hope & Recovery Faith, Hope and Recovery supports people impacted by mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder) by offering skills to increase hope and deepen faith. All are welcome. We meet every third Tuesday of the month at Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue from 7-8:30pm. Contact Rev. Kathy Dale McNair, [email protected], 847-989-1989.

Global Outreach
WPC outreach extends internationally to all corners of our
world. In these places we engage in a variety of endeavors,
including education (both secular and religious), medical
support, peacemaking and more. In all cases we strive to build
meaningful relationships with those whom we partner and
serve. Our primary international missions are:
Cuba Primera Iglesia Presbiteriana-Reformada de la Habana has been our partner in mission since 2000. Every other year we send a team of youth and adults who serve the church and engage in the building of meaningful, spiritual relationship.
Ukraine—Roma Working in partnership with the H.O.E Foundation, our PCUSA
Mission Co-Worker Burkhard Paetzold and the Hungarian and Ukrainian Reformed Church, we work to bring education to the Roma, a poor and marginalized ethnic people of central Europe.
In June 2015, WPC spent a week in Carpathia, Ukraine with the Roma.
South Sudan Shelvis and Nancy Smith-Mather serve as PCUSA Mission Co-Workers in the newest of African nations. Their primary role is to serve in the area of reconciliation and peacemaking.
Kenya—Gatina The Gatina United Church resides in a very poor neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. There our dollars support, among other things, a vital After School Program providing educational support and additional daily basic nutrition.
Mission Trips We believe that leaving our comfort zones and immersing ourselves in the service of others, as Jesus did, helps us grow in Christian faith. So we do this every year with WPC’s youth and adults.
We make regular trips to Havana, Cuba and the Ukraine, and we also do US-based trips to a variety of destinations, which recently have included Atlanta, East Tennessee, Florida, Colorado, South Carolina, and Los Angeles. If you are interested in giving a week of yourself to building relationships with others in another part of the world, we would love to know your interest for this year’s trip or trips.
2016 Summer Trips
Perhaps the most meaningful and powerful experience WPC offers is the opportunity to get outside our context of privilege in the North Shore, learn from people different than ourselves, and work with them to build relationships and infrastructure in their lives. This summer the youth will head to Havana, Cuba in August, and perhaps another location in June! Stay tuned.
Deacon Ministries
Deacons are elected by the congregation and ordained to lead
the church in congregational and community care. Everyone
who is part of the WPC family has a deacon, whose charge is
to nurture your spiritual life! In addition to regular nurture of
people, deacons provide care to those who are sick, at home,
grieving, or celebrating. Deacons also lead several ministries
of care and hospitality for the church, including:
Receptions Deacons produce certain receptions of celebration or support for the congregation. Contact Susan Langan, [email protected] or Virginia Trux, [email protected] help serve others using your culinary or decorative gifts!
Angel Chefs WPC prepares and delivers meals for those who could use a little help, whether they are sick, recovering, grieving, or adjusting to a newborn at home. Contact Amanda Lower, [email protected] to care through cooking!
Flower Deliveries to the Homebound Each week, church worship flowers are delivered to the sick and homebound in our congregation. Contact Bill McNair, [email protected], to help with this ministry, and spend time with some deserving WPC members at home. A great thing for a whole family to do together after church!
Transportation Help bring our less mobile members to worship on Sunday. Contact Mary Ellen Miller, [email protected], to lend your time and your wheels to help someone out.
Care Cards Contact Elizabeth Probst, [email protected], to give folks fresh reminders they are loved by our whole congregation.
Coffee Hour Refreshments Deacons organize and recruit volunteers to bring treats to share with the congregation after worship. Contact Ernie Palmer, [email protected], if you would like to provide hospitality for coffee hour.
If you have questions about how to reach your deacon or how to become part of this wonderful ministry, please contact:
Emily Marshall, Moderator [email protected], 847-446-6105.
Just Be There
for One Another!
This is what deacons do, and by “being
there” for others, in their times of struggle
and celebration, deacons help
communicate the life and love of God in
every place. This is not work to be
outsourced to deacons, though; it takes a
congregation to care for itself and the
community!
You can help. You can visit a person who is
sick or lonely, you can cook meals, you can
deliver flowers, give a ride, and send cards
of caring to others in the WPC family.
We encourage you to get involved in the
active and present care for people!
Stephen Ministries
Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay caring ministry taking
place in this congregation, as well as in congregations across
the country. This Ministry equips and empowers lay
caregivers (Stephen Ministers) to provide consistent,
confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are dealing
with difficult life transitions. At WPC, this ministry
supplements the work of our deacons and our pastors,
expanding the church’s ability to walk with people through
difficult times of their lives.
About Stephen Ministry Stephen Ministers are more than just people who volunteer. These committed laypeople go through 50 hours of training including skills such as listening, assertiveness, and the importance of the process in providing care. Stephen Ministers often find that this training has helped them in relationships beyond their ministry here. Ongoing monthly education improves our insight and understanding, and bi-weekly peer supervision keeps us accountable. This ministry does not exist without trained care-givers, but neither does it exist without people who are hurting. Because of the confidential nature of our ministry, the particulars of our care receivers are not discussed. But we truly value those who allow a Stephen Minister to accompany them in their difficult time. Through allowing ourselves to be cared for we participate in the hope God offers to us. This is an amazing gift to receive while in the midst of hurting, and an amazing gift to receive while in the midst of caring. While Stephen Ministers are trained to remain focused on the care receiver, walking with someone in the presence of the Holy Spirit never disappoints in providing renewal or reaffirmation of faith for the care-giver. It is a rich experience.
Engaging With Stephen Ministry Pray for the care needs of this congregation and your
community as you become aware of them. Remember Stephen Ministry and offer the skill and care this
ministry can provide. Consider becoming a care receiver as you journey through a
difficult time. Consider becoming a Stephen Minister. Another training class is
being planned for later in the school year - applications will be available shortly. Be open to God’s call to this ministry.
