Changing of the seasons. Change of scenery. Change of heart. Changing one’s tune. Climate

change. Pocket change. Change of direction. Changing the world. Sea change. So many

different changes!

We live in a world of constant change, at home, work and school; locally, nationally and worldwide.

In our own world of Camp Fire we saw many changes in 2015, including the first shift in staff

leadership in more than thirty years. But Camp Fire provides continuity in our programs that helps

ease the insecurity adjustments may cause. We invite you to see how change is beneficial to our

program participants that are profiled on the next pages, and to see how our programs have grown

and continue to inspire youth and adults.

No matter how much Camp Fire has evolved over the years, the underlying philosophy based on

Work, Health and Love remains the same as it was when Charlotte Gulick coined the term WoHeLo in

1910 as Camp Fire was founded. Our program delivery methods may have transformed significantly

since 1910, but the meaning of WoHeLo hasn’t changed as much as it has evolved over the years.

Mrs. Gulick wanted to glorify work; today we reach that goal through developing child care providers,

teaching them skills that will enable their work with children during the formative years to be of the

highest quality – changing for the better. Work also applies to our emphasis on service learning,

with youth in our programs giving service to their families, schools and communities – changing

their world.

Health was a big part of the Gulick’s original Camp Fire program, working to instill healthy habits

in daily life. Today, we promote healthy lifestyles, whether at camp, in after school programs or

in our training of early childhood professionals – changing habits.

Just like the Gulick’s original programs which took place at their camp in Maine, love today can be

found in our outdoor education programs as we teach environmental stewardship and a love for

the outdoors. Many long-lasting friendships started by singing around a campfire - experiences

that can change a life.

Thank you for being a part of the Camp Fire family, for helping us change with the times, for

providing the support that enables change and for helping change the world for the better.

Dr. Marie Holliday first became involved with Camp Fire

First Texas when she was in second grade as a Blue Bird.

She spent weekday afternoons meeting with her club of

girls and spent her summers at Camp El Tesoro - Camp

Fire’s 223-acre camp in Granbury, Texas.

“Camp El Tesoro was one of the few places I remember at

that time of my life that wasn’t segregated. We all camped,

played and learned in the outdoors together and received

recognition for our accomplishments. My church and my

time involved with Camp Fire helped shape who I am today,”

she shared. “My leadership and organization skills were

developed because of those experiences.”

Camp Fire has embraced

cha nge and that has allowed for growth in the organization.

Cha ngeEMBRACING

This is the same camp where she would send her sons

many years later after Camp Fire became a co-educational

organization. She applauded and embraced the decision

to become co-ed as yet another example of Camp Fire

laying the groundwork for a new generation of youth to

learn to work side-by-side and see one another as peers

who contribute equally to society.

As an adult, Dr. Holliday gave back her time and

professionalism to Camp Fire First Texas by serving on the

board from 1989-1994. She also served on the steering

committee for the Capital Campaign for Camp El Tesoro

from 2008-2015. “Camp Fire has embraced change and

that has allowed for growth in the organization,” she said.

It was this ability to embrace change that ushered in

innovative programs at Camp El Tesoro, like creating an

inclusion program for children with special needs in which

Dr. Holliday’s son participated for many years with a camp

buddy. She hopes the community and supporters recognize

Camp Fire First Texas is about the growth and development

of children and teens, and that this year signifies the

importance of embracing change.

Guy Mabee, J.E.

and L.E. Foundation Board member said on a recent visit to Camp El Tesoro.

“They are our up-and-coming leaders. At Camp El Tesoro, kids get a good

taste of real nature and real life. There are no video games or technology to

serve as a distraction.”

The J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation, Inc.,

a private charitable foundation, was formed

in 1948 by Mr. John E. Mabee and his wife,

Lottie E. Mabee, with the office in Tulsa,

Oklahoma. Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro has

been the beneficiary of the foundation’s

generosity, receiving two matching grants

totaling more than $1 million to assist with

camp upgrades and new construction.

Mr. and Mrs. Mabee passed away in 1961

and 1965, but the Mabee Foundation has

continued to carry on their purpose to aid

charitable organizations under the guidance

of its Board of Trustees, as a tribute to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Mabee.

From the date of its inception through the most recent fiscal year, grants paid

by the foundation to various educational, religious and charitable institutions

have totaled in excess of $1 billion.

When Guy visited Camp El Tesoro in the summer of 2015, he was able to

see the results of the foundation’s contribution first-hand as campers were

enjoying the new cabins and improvements funded by the foundation.

“We can see that our money is obviously well spent,” Mabee shared. “It’s

nice to be able to see the results of a project we were able to help fund at

such a great place.”

First-year Camp Fire El Tesoro de la Vida camper Michael

McClenny is no stranger to change. In February 2013,

Michael was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt

Lymphoma. While at the hospital for treatment, Michael

made friends with other cancer patients and they shared a

bond no one could understand. At the end of his treatment,

Michael was the only one of his friends going home. At age

13, he experienced what it was like to lose not one, but two

best friends.

After losing two friends and four family members, Michael

struggled with anger and found himself never wanting to

talk to anyone. While attending family grief counseling at

The Warm Place, Michael learned about El Tesoro de la

Vida. Through a camp scholarship, he was able to attend

in July 2015.

At camp, Michael found himself surrounded by other youth

who had similar experiences. Instead of being a teenager

struggling with grief, he was a hiker, an explorer, an archery

expert, a professional pool-footballer and – reluctantly – a

dancer with a date to the camp dance.

But it wasn’t until the last night of camp that Michael truly

felt the power of change. The Mustang Cabin was having

their final evening talk, and Michael felt he could truly open

up about his experience with grief. The bond he found in

his friends that had passed away was found once again with

his fellow campers. The next day when he laid his painted

rock in memory of his lost friends and family at the base

of the El Tesoro de la Vida tree, he felt a huge weight was

lifted off of his shoulders.

The change Michael experienced was immediately evident

to his family. His mother knew something life-changing had

happened from the second he got in the car to drive home.

“Now I look at change as something positive,” Michael said.

“I can talk about death and not immediately get mad or

sad. I can open up and change the way I think about it now.”

Michael has gone from asking ‘why me?’ to asking how he

can help others. He has become a mentor and advocate

for his peers at The Warm Place, and serves on the Youth

Advisory Council for Cook Children’s Hospital.

Unlike other organizations, Camp Fire programs are truly measurable.

We have employed the Thrive Theory of Change methodology to help enable

youth to achieve their full potential - and be able to prove it.

Every day, we see youth building positive, sustained relationships, learning

life skills that include self-reflection and goal management and practicing

these skills in our school-year, camp and teen programs. We also see youth

develop indicators of thriving such as increased social skills (inclusiveness and

empathy), life skills, conflict resolution, purpose and confidence. 2015 saw yet

another increase in Thrive areas across the board.

The Campaign for Camp El Tesoro was completed in

Fall 2015, raising more than $10.9 million. Major El Tesoro

construction projects included: the construction of

20 duplex cabins featuring granite counter tops, slate

showers and wide, welcoming porches; a new dining

hall, WoHeLo Lodge, that accommodates 300 people

and together with the new health house, store and camp

office serves as the center of camp; a 12,500 sq. foot

covered Equestrian Center; a multi-element challenge

course featuring both high and low ropes elements;

renovations to existing structures Louisa Haun, Horizon

and Discovery Lodges; and a multi-sports court built for

tennis, volleyball, basketball and more.

Since 1934, Camp El Tesoro has welcomed thousands

of campers spanning four generations. We are blessed

with the greatest group of donors who believe in every

child’s potential, the value of the outdoors and wisdom to

know that not all learning happens in a classroom. Your

gifts have transformed El Tesoro, and will improve the

camping and outdoor experience for thousands of kids for

the next 75 years. The buildings at El Tesoro have changed,

but the spirit and character remain true to Camp Fire’s

mission and values.

This year brought about

another signif icant

change - the retirement of

Zem Neill on June 30, 2015

after 37 years as President/

CEO. One third of the 100

year history of Camp Fire

First Texas was shaped

by Zem’s vision and

leadership. Her influence

and accomplishments helped grow the

council from an organization focused on

two programs (club and camp) with twelve

employees, to a multi-program agency

with more than 100 staff. Her impact on

the youth and families in this area has

been far-reaching and her leadership was

felt throughout the Camp

Fire system as a trainer,

conference presenter and

national board member.

She has left Camp Fire

with a legacy of attention

to detail and a quest for

quality in all that we do.

Thank you, Zem, for your

years of service, for your vision and for

guiding the growth and impact of Camp

Fire First Texas.

Succeeding Zem as President/CEO is Ann

Sheets, long-time First Texas employee

who has served in a variety of roles from

El Tesoro camp director to CFO.

JULYCamp El Tesoro Day Camp sold out with the highest attendance ever.

Camp Fire First Texas programs and staff are featured in this first-ever video from The Miles Foundation, “Strong Beginnings for a Brighter Future” focused on early childhood education in Fort Worth.

Page 16: 2015 Camp Fire First Texas Annual Report

Singing a well-loved song, nestling peacefully in the arms

of a teacher, giggling as a caterpillar crawls on a hand,

climbing into a lap to hear a favorite story – again, an

encouraging pat on the back, a heart-

to-heart conversation, taking a leap

of faith into the unknown –

IT IS IN THESE MOMENTS CHANGE HAPPENS.
