“Lord, help me to know You; to love You; and,

to serve others,” this is pro-claimed each morning by our 130 students, 10 returning faculty, a number of staff and parents, and a very proud Principal. Our community gathers each morning to share in breakfast and fellowship before starting our day of learning. A collective, “Proud to be MHT!” rings out as stu-dents march like Tiger Leaders to their respective classrooms. If you ever have a moment to join, this is the best way to start your day!

As part of a continued collaboration between Mercy

Kids and the Archdiocese of St. Louis Catholic Education Center, a new pilot program emerged last school year – Mercy Kids in Schools – to address and respond to trauma and stress for both students, their families and school staff.

The program launched in January at three Catholic elementary schools: Most Holy Trinity, St. Louis Catholic Academy and St. Louis the King. Developed as a result of research that showed the harmful effects of childhood trauma on future physical and mental health, it aims to reduce trauma incidents and the negative impact of childhood trauma by providing prevention and intervention techniques to the children and their families.

“Childhood trauma can have long-lasting effects and comes in different forms,” said Ujjwal Ramtekkar, MD, Mercy Kids child and adolescent psychiatrist. “Kids brains are like wet cement, the impressions made early are permanent. If we can alter the trajectory of brain development early with interventions promoting

mental health, we can hopefully change the cycle in these communities.”

Mercy Kids in Schools combines telehealth technology with a school-based licensed clinical social worker to help struggling families overcome some of the largest barriers to health care – transportation, time and access. The program provides counseling, professional development and resilience training, as well as connects students and their families to area agencies and resources, including a Mercy Kids psychiatrist when needed, both virtually and in person.

The telehealth component allows the clinical social worker – who shares time between the three schools – to more efficiently address acute crisis situations in real time. More importantly, it means parents won’t need to juggle time off work or find transportation to take children to appointments and students will spend more time in the classroom.

“With the support of Mercy Kids in Schools, we are able to advocate for our students and families and address the real and underlying

needs hindering their education,” said Jessica Kilmade, principal at Most Holy Trinity. “The vital services provided by our Mercy Kids social worker allow Most Holy Trinity to truly foster the spiritual, social, emotional and educational development of our community.”

Dr. Ramtekkar added, “In the office, we only get an hour – it’s like only a stroke of the paintbrush. The schools see the full picture, which is why it was so important to the program to have a licensed clinical social worker in the school. It’s built into the program and reflects the whole picture with partnership between school and mental health providers.”

Mercy Kids in Schools is currently funded entirely through private donations to the Mercy Health Foundation St. Louis.

MERCY KIDS PARTNERSHIP HAS IMPACTED ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

We are thankful to have Kimberly Harrelson, LCSW, as our Mercy Kids social worker!

GRAND ENDEAVOR SCHOLARSHIP DINNERThank you to our friends at St. Anselm Parish for hosting a wonderful Scholarship Mass and Dinner that included worship, food and fellowship. Students and families from MHT joined St. Anselm parishioners at the annual Scholarship Dinner and Mass on September 19, 2015. The Grand Endeavor partnership between Most Holy Trinity and St. Anselm has been in place for 24 years! Last year, the Grand Endeavor Committee hosted several events, including a retreat, between the two parishes. Grand Endeavor and the parishioners at St. Anselm have been very supportive of Most Holy Trinity students and gifted over $100,000 in scholarships for MHT students.

A Q&A with Ms. Erin Scherer, 2nd Grade TeacherMs. Erin Scherer is our enthusiastic second grade teacher. Ms. Scherer is a St. Louis native and attended Ursuline Academy. She graduated in 2012 from Christian Brothers University with a Masters of Arts in teaching. She has been teaching at MHT for two years.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I loved math and science in school. I loved that in math there was always a right answer and in science I loved the experiments and the order.

Did you have a favorite teacher? My favorite teacher was Mrs. Bokamper because she was very organized and expected that of her students as well. She always had high expectations for everyone and helped her students meet them.

What is your favorite subject to teach? My favorite subject to teach is Reading. I love seeing students grow in their abilities and love for books throughout the year.

What makes teaching at MHT so great?I love teaching at MHT because we are a family. Everyone knows me and I know everyone. The kids are genuinely happy to be here.

What is your favorite Mission Moment from this school year?My favorite mission moment so far this year was observing a student that has some difficulties supporting and helping another student during an upsetting moment, allowing her own issues to be put aside to help the other student get back to class and ready to learn.

What would surprise people to know about you?Something people would be surprised about is that I run half marathons. I have run 5 already and will be running my 6th in February at Disney World.

T hrough the generosity of donors, MHT had several renovation and technology projects completed this summer! Thanks to a generous grant provided by the Brown Sisters Foundation, the gym floors were completely refinished, and with other funding

partners, MHT was able to have the gym repainted and new basketball hoops installed! The bathrooms in the Academy building have also been renovated. The church basement and cafeteria had its floors refinished. While those projects you can physically see, there were many technology and security infrastructure projects put into place too. The entire school had a new phone system with voicemail installed. Now both school buildings can communicate with one another and the system can be used as an emergency paging system. Additionally, a new network was installed between the two school buildings, with an upgrade to the existing inter-net access, so that the computer configuration could be streamlined and both faculty and students can work on the same network. Lastly, with a new door camera system in place, both buildings now have video surveillance instead of just audio.

7Ms. Pittman, the new office manager, uses the new phone system.
