#RNRAZ

Page 2: 2015 P.F. Chang's Rock n Roll Arizona Event Guide

Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the

mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want

it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is

a journey and running should be a celebration.

Page 6: 2015 P.F. Chang's Rock n Roll Arizona Event Guide

TWELVE YEARS. Twelve years we’ve been coming together as a community, encouraging each other and celebrating the gift of a phenomenal race in three of America’s greatest cities. Twelve years we’ve been smiling, nursing sore feet, laughing, hugging and sometimes crying. Twelve years we’ve been proud, determined, awed and inspired by those around us. For 12 years we have proudly called this the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & Half Marathon.

January is my favorite month of the year because I feel a true connection to the community in the Valley of the Sun. Arizona has been our home since we opened the first P.F. Chang’s in Scottsdale in 1993. In 2004 we decided to sponsor a world class marathon and half marathon, and today, in our 12th year, we celebrate another year of health and good fortune. January is a time to start fresh, take a second to breathe, appreciate determination, and anticipate the new heights to which we aspire to soar.

When you run this year, take a moment to appreciate your accomplishment and the over $29,236,508 million (net) that’s been raised for over 50 charities on behalf of the race participants. Enjoy your run and make this year the best yet.

Here’s to you, Arizona. Rock On!

Thanks to the generosity of SRP EarthWise Energy™ participants, nonprofits across the Valley have saved money by using solar energy. Each month, SRP customers on the EarthWise Energy program commit an additional $3, $6, $9 or $12 to their electric bills. SRP uses 100% of these contributions to provide solar systems for local nonprofit organizations.

Since 2007, the program has helped 18 nonprofits save a combined total of $185,000. The clean energy produced by the systems not only helps offset the organizations’ operational costs by reducing electric bills but also has prevented the release of more than 2.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of taking 229 cars off the road for a year.

Nonprofits that have been awarded solar systems through the program include the Child Crisis Center, Boys & Girls Clubs, Hospice of the Valley and the Phoenix Zoo to name a few.

EarthWise Energy is a convenient, cost-effective way customers can make a difference that transforms solar

power into shelter for families, services for those in need and hope for endangered species.

Go to SRPEarthWise.com or call (602) 236-4448 to enroll or get more information.

Solar panels on your roof are great when you’re in the home. But what if you move? With SRP Community Solar, instead

of installing panels on your roof, you elect to have a portion of your energy come from a local solar plant. So it’s perfect for

anyone – even folks on the move. The program follows you to any location in the SRP territory. What’s more, no panels means no

upfront costs, maintenance or long-term contracts. And the price for the solar portion of your bill will be locked in for five years.

So it’s a smart move, any way you look at it. To learn more, visit srpcommunitysolar.com.

For many of you, this will be your first half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

TraIn

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run.

There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of

the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a

comfortable pace.

HYDraTE

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink

every 20 minutes.

SaLT

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes

during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood]

sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it

may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and

confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench

your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

pLEaSE

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical

problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have,

medications you are taking or allergies to medications is

extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all

of our athletes like Rock Stars.

If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day.We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

Running Trails

Hit tHE tRAiLS:In the final days before your big race, it’s im-portant to take care of your body! You’ll want to rest your legs, but an easy two to three mile tune-up run can help relieve anxiety and keep your body loose. Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe conveniently offer various walking and hiking trails that are easily accessible to both residents and visitors. Check out one of these suggested trails!

rEaCH 11 rECrEaTIon arEaFor outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy solitude and peaceful surroundings while they train, the city’s Reach 11 Recreation Area is a run-ner’s paradise. Offering 18 miles of trails, this recreation area features a surprising amount of trees and grasses, and wide, stable-surface footpaths covering mostly flat terrain.

Reach 11 Recreation Area is located between Cave Creek Road and Scottsdale Road, just north of the CAP Canal, in Scottsdale

pIESTEWa pEaK With the many different mountain ranges in and around Phoenix, there are a lot of options for jog-ging space. What sets apart the Piestewa Peak area is the variety in difficulty among the trails and the great views. Many of the trails are at a higher elevation than the rest of the city, offering serious joggers glimpses of other mountain peaks and the surrounding area. A favorite trail among runners is the gently sloping Dreamy Draw Nature Trail, which can be accessed from Northern Avenue and be-gins at one end of a paved parking lot.

The Piestewa Peak area is on both sides of High-way 51 at East Northern Avenue in Phoenix

arIZona BILTMorE rESorT If you’re getting burned out on running in the desert and want a change in scenery that fea-tures classier surroundings, perhaps the Ari-zona Biltmore Resort area is your best choice. Run along the south side of the Arizona Canal, which winds its way right through the middle of the Arizona Biltmore’s property, past the Wrigley Mansion, the resort, the resort’s golf course, and a number of very lovely homes.

The Arizona Biltmore Resort canal trail is locat-ed roughly at North 24th St. and East Arizona Biltmore Circle in Phoenix
