VOLUME 3 ISSUE NO. 1 ®The Official Student Publication of Aparri School of Arts and Trades ©SCHOOL YEAR 2015-2016
The Aparri School
of Arts and Trades has
opened the early registra-
tion period for Senior High
School (SHS).
In his speech, Ed-
ward D. Garcia, Ph.D. told
everyone that this is to en-
sure that grade 10 students
will be enrolled in the next
school year. Furthermore, he
encouraged the students to
continue their Senior High
School on ASAT.
According to him,
the school will offer three
tracks namely: Technical
Vocational Livelihood
(TVL), Science Technology,
Engineering and Mathe-
matics (STEM) and Gen-
eral Academic Strand
(GAS).
After finishing
Grade 12, they will not on-
ly gain a high school diplo-
ma but they will acquire
Certificate of Competencies
or National Certification in
their field of specialization.
First,
there
was
silence!
Then
after a
mo-
ment or two, it was fol-
lowed by a sudden burst of
excitement, as Edward D.
Garcia, Ph.D., the newly
installed principal of
Aparri School of Arts and
Trades started to deliver
his message in front of the
1200 students and more
than 50 faculty and staff of
the school during his Wel-
come Party held at ASAT
Quadrangle last June 18,
2015.
In his speech, he
thanked everyone for warm-
ly welcoming him as their
newly installed principal. He
also told the students that
they are very lucky because
ASAT has a pool of intelli-
gent teachers and it is well
known to be one of the best
Tech-Voc Schools in the
region.
He also encouraged
the students to strive more to
be successful in the future
especially now that the
K+12 curriculum had been
implemented.
He explained that
the skills which the students
gain will be beneficial to
them in the future especially
if they are planning to work
abroad. At the end, he told
everyone that he will do his
best to continue the pro-
grams of Dr. Rabaja and he
will give his 100% commit-
ment to the school.
In order to know more
about the newly installed prin-
cipal, the Industrialists conduct-
ed an online interview wherein
the following data were ob-
tained.
From Secondary
School Teacher I, he rose in
ranks when he passed the prin-
cipal qualifying exam in 2004.
As a result therefore, he was
designated as Teacher-in-
Charge from 2005 to 2007.
Few months later in
the same year, he was made a
full-fledged principal of the
Aparri East National High
School. During his ten year
term (2005-2015), AENHS
won countless awards in
MTAP, NSPC, Science Fairs
and Sports.#
Sit back and re-
lax! The COSME
students demon-
strated their skill
in Men’s Mani-
cure and Swedish
Massage to Dr.
Virgilio Isidro,
TLE EPS.
With the advent of
the K+12 curriculum, the
Department of Education
aimed to strengthen the
Technical Vocational skills of
the students by gearing them
the necessary skills they will
need in order to be globally
competitive. Thus, to moni-
tor and ensure the capability
of DepEd schools in offering
different technical vocational
courses in the region, De-
pEd’s Regional Supervisor
in TLE, Virgilio P. Isidro,
Ph.D. visited and offered
technical assistance to the
Aparri School of Arts and
Trades last June 24, 2015.
With the main pur-
pose of checking the com-
petency levels of the ASAT
students, Dr. Isidro ob-
served the different courses
and asked the students of
the different competencies
they have learned from their
STVE classes.
After a few rounds
in observing the different
courses offered by the
Aparri School of Arts and
Trades, the cosmetology
department then offered Dr.
Isidro a demonstration of
what their course has to of-
fer so he accepted the offer.
The group then pro-
ceed to the principal’s office
and offered him men’s man-
icure and Swedish massage.
After the demon-
stration, he commended the
cosmetology students for a
very soothing massage and
remarkable nail service.
“The students
showed remarkable skills
and I really enjoyed their
demonstration. This mani-
fests that they are indeed
ready for the K-12 curricu-
lum.”, he further said. #

HEAVEN’S
STONE
Lights, Camera, Action !
By: Maria Camille Abinan
When election comes the scene runs—promises here,
promises there and everywhere! Candidates yelling out their
candidacy, hoping they can conquer the student’s votes with
self- composed jingles and engaging speeches to deliver in
each and every room. These are the common situations when
the day of electing new officers to rule and take charge is ap-
proaching.
There are times that change and improvement hap-
pens but unfortunately they only occur once in a blue moon
and can be enjoyed only in a short time. “I will do my best for
the betterment,” says one. “Let me be your bet and you wont
regret,” says another. Development? Change?
Ooooooooooohhhh such bitter sweet words! Improvement?
Where? Or should I say, when?
A good leader never swallows back his words, right?
“Aktibo sa umpisa sa huli nganga din naman pala”—Ningas
kugon. Everyone’s practice which is never quite shocking.
Now, do you want to vote an officer who is good at first but
later on, in waiting for his promises you... student will thirst.!
Oh heaven’s stones when you got hit please don’t
be mad at me! I am not totally accusing everyone of such
stomach turning behavior—which really makes everyone of
us sick and in my opinion it is something that even a dog can
not swallow. But what qualities should one really need to look
at a leader who is vying for position?
Officers by cameras and documentations would be
like leaders by position but definitely not through actions.
Lies! Very ridiculous! Role models do jobs only after com-
mander bursts out in anger, how disappointing! Again, do you
want to vote— officers by caption and never minds about the
action.
Indeed, good followers are the torch towards right-
eousness but bear in mind that responsible leaders are the key
for a better and brighter image as well as future. The choice is
in your hands so why put it into waste? We must vote an
officer who can bring back the light of hope, never minds
the camera and lastly, a leader ready for action!
What is K+12? Is it a solution to the tremendous challenges of today’s millennium or is it an
additional problem that needs to be addressed by everyone concerned?
The K-12 Basic Education Program is a flagship program of the Department of Education
(DepEd) which covers Kindergarten and 12years of basic education (six years of primary education, four
years Junior High school and two Years Senior High School (SHS) –Grades 11 and 12 to provide sufficient
time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary educa-
tion, middle level skills development and entrepreneurship. Through the K-12, Filipino learners will be
holistically developed with the 21st century skills.
Since the Aparri School of Arts and Trades is a Technical Vocational School, it offers the follow-
ing courses in Junior High School: Dress Making, PC Hardware Servicing, Electronics, Electricity, Draft-
ing, Cosmetology and Commercial Cooking. While in Senior High School, it will focus on the Technical
Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and General
Academic Strand (GAS).
At present, the Aparri School of Arts and Trades’ flagship is “Our School, Your Way to the Top!”
As proofs of this tag, all laboratories in the different shops are functioning. Furthermore, 12 out of 13 STVE
teachers are already TMI holder.
Another proof is the recognitions earned by students and teachers from national technolympics.
This is a manifestation that students possess skills which they could use to earn a living not only for them-
selves but also for their family. Furthermore, it will teach them basic entrepreneurial activities and how to
properly handle their money. Aside from the preparation of a better future, it will also garner the students a
National Certificate with a specific level which they can use after completing Grade 12 to land job not only
in the country but also abroad.
However, opinion and reaction of the public are divided. Some are in favor, some are not of the
implementation of the K+12 Program. Many say that it adds to financial problems of parents, lack of
schools and classrooms, number of teachers and even availability of books and other reading materials.
Meanwhile, the school and its stakeholders share responsibility to provide the demand of the pro-
gram which may include additional rooms, teachers, instructional materials, laboratory equipment and
readings materials and modules.
In order to succeed, people concerned should work together for its implementation; the imple-
menters ought to be trained well since they could “make or unmake” the said program; assistance from the
different organizations is likewise needed; the parents should be informed and motivated of the advantages
of the K+12 Educational Plan and students should be enlightened about the benefits they could receive
from the program. Thereby, if the k+12 Educational Plan becomes successful, Filipino students would be
more literate, skilled and competitive to be able to find jobs more easily and contribute to the country’s
pride as well as the country’s economy.

HOW TO DEAL WITH A CYBER-
BULLY
The world at your fingertips – proves the massive usage of
cyberspace nowadays.
In a click, you can reach anybody around the globe,
watch your favourite movies, enjoy your leisure activities, or
finding someone you can communicate with, regardless of
time and place making the World Wide Web a great provider
of answers to billions of questions. But as wide as its con-
venience is its great capacity and capability to humiliate or
worse ruin one’s life in just a click as well.
Cyber bullying is the most rampant disadvantage of
the irresponsible usage of the internet. It is the electronic
posting of mean-spirited messages about a person and its
main intention is to harass, threat, humiliate or hurt
someone’s feeling.
Cyber bullying perhaps a product of abusive free-
dom of expression, truly uncontrollable but can be mini-
mized its depressive effects by wise and smart dealing with
it.
BE A RESPONSIBLE NETIZEN
If we want change, start it within ourselves. Responsible ex-
pression of thoughts is advised. Considering the feelings of
others can help a lot too.
THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK
A click is very powerful in cyberspace, it can even cause
someone to commit suicide. So think thrice before trying to
click the enter tab.
BE OPTIMISTIC NOT TOO SENSITIVE
If it’s all about foul comments, take it positively. Everyone
has flaws, yet it’s normal. Be optimistic and respect their
thoughts, have your own positive thoughts too. But if the
bully insists you must:
ASK FOR AUTHORITY
If the bully seems to truly mean to harass you or your loved
ones, report it to the authority. Be calm, don’t panic refrain
from further communication and speak your mind in report-
ing.
HUNT FOR GOOD VIBES
In case your affected by the bully’s posts, cling to
God and your family or someone who could comfort you. Be
yourself, as you know you’re not causing harm to anybody,
and did wrong to anyone, live life and be a responsible
netizen. #Prospero Agarpao
The looking-glass
self is a social psychological
concept, created by
Charles Horton Cooley in
1902 (McIntyre 2006), stat-
ing that a per-
son's self grows out of soci-
ety's interpersonal interac-
tions and the perceptions
of others. Put it in simpler
terms, this means that you
are what other thinks of
you.
Applying the same
principle, lets get to know a
lady who spent her precious
hours burning candles all
night just to scrutinize the
mountains of composition
written by her students.
A lady who instead
of devoting her time to rest
after a tiring day, preferred
to make lessons plan and
rehearse her lessons until
dawn just to be ready for
the next day.
A lady who taught
her learners from the sim-
plicity of eight parts of
speech up to the complexi-
ties of writing a composi-
tion and performing it in
front of
a large audience.
Let us meet Mrs.
Susan Banastas Cortez
through the eyes of her stu-
dents.
When it comes to
dancing, Ma’am
Susan is simply
indefatigable!
People come and go as they say, but one thing I am sure of, is a person who loved her students, fellow teachers and superior dearly. She came in this school (ASAT), She went about this school for she retired, but she’ll always be here because this is one of the places where her heart is. She is a woman who deserves to be respected and to be loved truly. Not only as a student, but I also experienced to become one of her fellow-teachers. It’s just more than a year; however, I felt how welcome I was and I am in heart. I know and I see, in other’s lives too. Ma’am Susan Cortez is a teacher, a friend and a mother I will never forget.
-Jerelyn
To You Ma’am Susan,
You will be r e m e m b e r e d a s Wonder Woman whose strength never last. Thank you for all the patience, s a c r i f i c e s a n d knowledge you have imparted to us. —Lorein
Wishing you and
your family all the best as
you enter into a new
phase of your life. May
you enjoy the extra time
that you’ll be spending to
your family.

Ma’am for sharing all
your expertise, and may
GOD BLESS YOU
MORE.

Congratulations to our dearly beloved mentor who had retired and f inished her teaching profession-Mrs. Susan B. Cortez. Ma’am Susan has been a very good teacher. She is one who kindles the mind of her students. She explains well to those who are not good in understanding. Kudos to you Ma’am and thank you for being my teacher. James P
I appreciate everything
you taught me, and my interactions
with you in the classroom have been
the inspiration for my dreams to
come true. You empower and teach
your students on a whole new level.
You’ve instilled in me a great value
for education, and a real heart to
believe in younger generations and
inspire them to truly become
themselves.
I thank you for you were
once my adviser and teacher for
without you, I would not be what I
am today.
God bless you Ma’am..
Love you always.
——-Norlyn
When I was young, I really lack self confidence. I am trembling when I
recite. I was very scared to share my ideas to the class. I had stage fright. I
thought that I was really hopeless but when I was already in High School. There
was this terror teacher who terrorized to perform in front of the class. I really
don’t like to perform but when she told everyone that those who will not perform
will have a failing grade, I had no choice but to perform. At the end of my per-
formance, she praised me and told me that I have a well modulated voice. When
I heard that I was really fluttered so since then I strive to be a better student.
By the way that terror teacher is Ma’am Susan whom I am forever indebt-
ed to. Without you Ma’am I will never reach this far. So let me say “Every life was
painted by God’s own hand that’s why I’m really thankful because as He painted
my life He painted one color that will never fade and that is you!” I love you
Mommy Susan! Keep Safe always! Godspeed!

Fire Protection (BFP) with
the Philippine National Po-
lice (PNP)launched a “Fire
and Earthquake Drill” at
Aparri School of Arts and
Trades (ASAT) on the 22nd
day of July, 2015.
They gave activities
and mostly demonstration
which helped students to
know more about fires and
earthquakes, also to prepare
them for such situations and
to make sure students are
aware on what to do during
these happenings.
Using gravel, sand,
and water, three students
namely; Jeremiah Palope,
Arjay Romero; and Juluis
Molino exterminated the
fire.
The teachers and
staff also tried extinguish-
ing the fire using the same
method. They are Mr. Jim-
my Usita, an electricity
teacher; Mr. Peter Paul
Jabines, a civil technology
teacher; and lastly Mr.
Rommy Sapine, the guard.
After the demon-
stration about fire prepar-
edness, students had gone
to their respective class-
rooms to start the earth-
quake drill. They were in-
structed to come out when
the siren rings, they are
going to an open space and
follow the rule “Duck,
Cover, and Hold”.
It was followed by
emergency rescue drills.
The Boy scouts and Girl
scouts of ASAT started the
search and rescue operation.
They gave first aids to the
people who they found
wounded. They demonstrat-
ed the things to do when a
person is in grave danger and
others.
With the help of the Faculty,
Staff, Boy scouts and Girl
scouts, and the joint forces of
BFP and PNP, the program
ended successfully, leaving
students knowledge on such
disasters that may come.
“The ASAT family would like
to extend our heartfelt thanks
and appreciation to BFP and
PNP Aparri for giving our
students this activity.” Thus,
said Mr. Sol Calata, SSG
adviser.# Crismar Calanoga

members was taught how to give first aid treatment.
Through the col-
laborative effort of the
school paper advisers,
school principal and the
students as well, a school
based press conference
(SBPC) is upheld at
Aparri School of Arts and
Trades, cosmetology build-
ing joined by aspiring
young journalists last Oc-
tober 9-10, 2015.
A total of 127 dele-
gate joined the SBPC to
show their best shots in
eight different categories
namely; Feature writing,
Editorial Writing, Editorial
Cartooning, Science and
Health Writing, Sports
Writing, News Writing,
Copy Reading and Head-
line Writing, and Photo-

Lecturers from dif-
ferent schools had exerted
their best to let the students
understand firmly concepts
in the various field of jour-
nalism. Ms. Rose Ann Laz-

“Seeing the future writers to
exert effort and make their
own unique article is worth
appreciating.” Said Ms.
Aiza Quilang, SBPC Facili-
tator. According to the
school paper adviser- Mrs.
Lilibeth Calanoga, the
school conducts this kind of
activity to show the stu-

With fifty thousand pesos worth of cash plus do-
nations from generous patrons, the Supreme Student
Government Officers headed by Mr. Sol Calata, adviser
were able to build an avenue for learning containing ta-
bles and chairs located behind ASAT’s main building.
The SSG started to work on the project last April
2015 through the use of 2014-2016 SSG funds. Because of
the shortage of fund, the SSG seek help from PTA officers,
Alumni, Principal and other stake holders to be able to con-
tinue the project.
The work plan was conceived primarily to create an
alternative learning resource where the students would be
able to review past and present lessons, make assignments,
do projects, play chess and other activities that could en-
hance teaching learning process.
Furthermore, it aims to upgrade the physical devel-
opment of the school ground and at the same time to pro-
vide additional space for learning especially the school is a
WIFI free campus.
Indeed, the project is an avenue where students can
do collaborative learning activities, a place to stay and to
relax after tiring classroom activity. Sir Calata believed that
this intervention project would foster better learning and
achieving greater heights in academic subjects and in extra-
curricular activities. #Kristine Gangani

With the heavy out-
pouring of rain which is
sometimes unpredictable,
the entrance of the school,
front and eastern sides of
the two-storey building
(known as Admin Bldg.)
are always flooded thus,
resulting to traffic or even
difficulty of passing out the
school gate.
This has been a prob-

tion of Mrs. Mira Jane Tett,
the new ASAT-Parents

-PTA) President, S.Y. 2015-
2016.
Through her leader-

solicit 16 loads of gravel and
sand. 10 of which came from
the office of the Provincial
Governor, Hon. Alvaro
“Bong” T. Antonio, and 6
loads from the office of
Board Member Hon. Ra-

were used as back-fills on
the flooded areas.

by donating Php 20,000.00

during the Cagayan Pro-

Chess Tournament held at
Provincial Library,
Tuguegarao City last No-

to win four games without
any defeats in both the
standard and blitz category.
As a result, she will repre-

When asked about
what she can say on her lat-

don’t know what to feel.
Well I can say that I am hap-
py but on the contrary I am
also a little bit sad because
Kuya Ken did not make it.”
“I dedicate this victory of
mine to God because I can
not do this without Him. I
also dedicate this feat to our
school specially to our ever
supportive principal and to
all my teachers and class-
mates. And of course, I
would also like to thank my
family who are always there
for me specially to my kuya

who taught me everything I
know about the game.” She
added.
When asked about
the secret of Czarina’s suc-

Jason Dayao simply smiled
and replied, “It runs in the
blood! As a family, chess has
been our favorite bonding
that’s perhaps the reason
why she won.”
